Single review: GHOSTS OF MEN – Trouble
Regent Street Records [Release date 01.05.20]
Serial festival performers and Planet Rock favourites,The Ghosts Of Men are carving out a reputation for themselves as the future of the two piece (guitar and drums) rock band.
Their three previous releases are all running hard to stay ahead of the band’s reputation, as demand spirals exponentially outward into a world of new converts.
Fuelled by a fuzz bursting riff and the pounding percussive thud of an insistent bass guitar, the minimalist vigour of ‘Trouble’ (a trailer for the next album, later this year) confirms that you can’t be the future without looking back. It’s as elemental as the booming blues heaviosity of the White Stripes, and is fuelled by the same barely controlled intensity of the Black Keys. It’s edge of the seat listening, you expect it to go careering off the rails at any moment. And yet it carries a commercially appealing melodic core, recalling the way in Zappa and Beefheart undercut the controlled chaos with great tunes, back in the last century.
Looks like this could be Ghosts Of Men’s moment, and any band who succeeds right now, while the world is in turmoil, deserves that moment in the sun.
