Album review: FORNDOM – Fapir

A new genre has been created: Viking Chill-out and Forndom is the King. Skillfully mixing the best of Icelandic bands like Sigur Ros along with traditional Scandinavian folk, this Swedish artist brings a stunning world of artic landscapes to life. The album’s seven tracks soar with incandescent beauty whilst interweaving ancient dark mystery amid the lush sounds.
‘Jakten’ opens the album with a huge and powerful drama, drums are beaten, choirs drone and keys and violin dance over the top to mesmerizing effect. You’re instantly transported to a land with one foot in the ancient and another in the modern, a twilight zone that wraps you in mist and folklore as you are swept over wintry fields and through dense forests.
The journey continues in ‘Yggdrasil’, more primal percussion opens up vistas and campfires, freezing cold nights through to blindingly white snow, the sun warming your face as you trudge ever onwards. Utterly hypnotic, it builds and builds until you find yourself hopelessly lost in its depths and so it goes.
From the orchestral ‘Muninn’ and into the dangerous and unspeakably gorgeous ‘Hel, jag vet mig vantar’ each track is an epic that can both sooth and excite in equal portion, capturing both the heart and the imagination.
By the time final track ‘Hemkomst’ fades your world will have changed, you’ll feel the freshest of air fill your lungs and your eyes full of tears at the wonder of the Northern Lights, transported there purely by the act of slipping on a pair of headphones as you put the album. Absolutely stunning in any language, ‘Fapir’ is brooding, magical and beautiful and one of the best things you’ll hear this or any other year. *****
