Quick plays: ANNA ELIZABETH LAUBE, PEACH & QUIET

ANNA ELIZABETH LAUBE Annamania

ANNA ELIZABETH LAUBE  Annamania (Ahh…Pockets! Records)
[Release date 22.01.21]

You’ll find reviews of Americana singer songwriter Anna Laube’s last two releases – ‘Anna Laube’ (2015) and ‘Tree’ (2016) buried in the Get Ready to ROCK! archives.  Sufficient to say the former had an ‘easy listening’ East Coast vibe – its fusion of folk, country, blues and jazz falling squarely into Norah Jones ‘cafe culture’ territory, while the latter, focusing on environmental, personal, and societal healing, uses the barest of instrumentation and drips in mournfulness.

Annamania (which, realistically, is unlikely although she has amassed 20m streams on Spotify, so what do I know?) is a retrospective collection from her five studio albums which started with Outta My Head (2006), Pool All The Love and  Pool All The Knowledge (2009), ‘Anna Laube’ (2015) and ‘Tree’ (2016) supplemented with three new recordings – a poignant piano and French Horn cover of Tom Petty’s ‘Time To Move On, ‘I’m Gone’ – a bluesy garage rock tune featured on the Netflix show Locke & Key, and ‘Jardim Da Estrela’ a number inspired by her time in Lisbon and featuring Chris Joyner (Ray LaMontagne) on accordion.

Loaded with gentle folk, Suzanne Vega and Norah Jones tones, ‘understated’ perhaps best describes the vibe of a set that hangs together well, and offers a good starting point if that genre of artist floats your boat.  ***

PEACH & QUIET Just Beyond The Shine (Peach & Quiet Music)
[Release date 15.01.21]

Peach & Quiet are singer songwriter duo Jonny Millar and Heather Read from British Columbia, the western most state in Canada, and Just Beyond The Shine their debut.

Recorded and produced in Nashville by Steve Dawson (does the man never sleep?) the album is what I would call an ‘honest’ offering.  Majoring on understated country and folk, for a Get Ready To ROCK! audience it will work best where the duo alight on the edges of rock – like the Petty-eque opener ‘Empty To Fill’, and the bluesy, ‘Vaya Con Dios’ styled, ‘Shoreline After The Storm’.

As with all Steve Dawson productions, the sonics and supporting cast are first class, and Country lovers will enjoy ‘Lucky In Love’, but overall, while I can see Peach & Quiet having a strong local ‘pull’ I just don’t see Just Beyond The Shine translating into a broader fan base.  ***
