EP review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – Feeling Great

HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – Feeling Great

Bandcamp [Release date 18.12.20]

One of the better things during 2020 have been to see the rise in interest and acclaim for the progressive duo Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate. Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate are Malcolm Galloway and Mark Gatland, often accompanied by Kathryn Thomas (flute).

This four song EP is unrelated to their forthcoming album, ‘The Confidence Trick’, but contains some songs written during lockdown.

The title track sums up 2020 in a nutshell, as a year where we have all struggled to various degrees and although lyrically it is downbeat, strangely after listening to the song one feels more upbeat. Piano and lightly swished percussion work a treat on this song. It is the only vocals track on the EP too.

The Gilmour-esque guitar on ‘Struggling’ is simply stunning. Backed by piano and Hammond, they have created a wonderful piece of bluesy based music.

The instrumental ‘Callisto Cuddle Sponge’, named after Philip K Dick’s hideous alien parasite, features Mark Gatland on the Chapman Stick, which adds another dimension to the music.

‘Skyline’ is a bonus track, a previously unreleased electronic instrumental Malcolm wrote in 2011. A supporter heard it on a YouTube video, and asked for it to be released. Loving the synths/keys on this one – Tangerine Dream with a touch of the Chemical Brothers.

This EP from Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate will tide us over nicely to their new album is released. If you haven’t discovered this band yet get along to their Bandcamp page as you’re in for a treat. ****
