Album review: SORCERESS OF SIN – Mirrored Revenge

SORCERESS OF SIN – Mirrored Revenge

Bandcamp [Release date 27.11.20]

Sorceress Of Sin formed in 2020 in Cambridge, based around vocalist/lyricist Lisa Skinner and her husband, drummer Paul Skinner. By day they run a post office but after hours they go all power metal! Joining them in the band are guitarist Constantine Kanakis and bassist Topher O’Meagher, with Tom Maclean as the album’s engineer, guest bassist and orchestral arranger.

Lisa Skinner has a superb vocal range – you can see/hear why she has sung opera previously – and on ‘Aradia’ she sounds like a female Rob Halford on the screaming vocal parts. She sings operatic vocals on this one as well making it a definite album highlight.

Tom Maclean earns his keep with the orchestral arrangements on ‘Echoes Of Existence’, a classic slow burner of a song. Suitably grandiose, both musically and vocally, one for Nightwish and Epica fans. As is ‘Cold Carnality’, which has plenty of musical twists and turns. Impressive bit of guitar on this one and in Constantine Kanakis they have themselves a real find. Nice on the solos – nothing overly flash – and solid riffing when required.

Sorceress Of Sin are going to be a band to see live once gigs get going again, as songs like the title track and the galloping metal of ‘Vixen Of Virtue’ are made for performing live. The latter recalls Helloween, not a bad band to be lumped in with methinks.

An assured and confident debut which I can see the band building upon and developing their own sound further as they progress. Get over to Bandcamp, grab a copy and set your speakers to eleven! ****
