Quick plays: HAMISH HAWK, LANGAN FROST & WANE

HAMISH HAWK Heavy Elevator Assai Recordings [Release date 17.09.21]

Hamish Hawk is an Edinburgh-based songwriter who performs solo and as frontman of the New Outfit.

Hamish Hawk possess a rich, warm baritone vocal, perfectly suited for the mellower moments like ‘Vivian Comma’. Not unlike the Divine Comedy say on ‘This, Whatever It Is, Needs Improvements’.

Kudos to any singer who can get ‘The Mauritian Badminton Doubles Champion, 1973’ into a chorus of a song, and a catchy one at that. Unsurprisingly released as a single, as could be ‘Bakerloo, Unbecoming’, another fine piece of upbeat indie pop.

Saving one of the best till last, ‘New Rhododendrons’ is full of musical wonder and another fine example of Hamish’s vocals.

Alt pop? Sometime indie crooner? Who knows what to classify him as, apart from very enjoyable and certainly gained a new fan in this reviewer. ****

LANGAN, FROST & WANE Goldstar Recordings [Release date 23.07.21]

A trio of singer songwriters, namely Brian Langan (The Sw!ms, Needlepoints), RJ Gilligan (Frost) played in rock bands like Dark Web, and Nam Wayne (Wane), got together to create music influenced by late 60’s/early 70’s folk rock and psychedelic pop.

If it wasn’t for the modern production you would think this was some long lost gem from the late 60’s/early 70’s. Songs like the ethereal ‘The Dandelion’ and the simple, yet effective acoustic guitar riff on ‘Everyday Phoenix’ would have been all over the radio shows of the likes of John Peel and Bob Harris back in the day. ‘King Laughter’ is more down the psychedelic pop route of Jellyfish, very enjoyable.

Do give this a few spins as after the first listen I did think it was a tad too twee in parts and verging into folk clichés. However, they have cannily taken a sound from a classic era of music and adapted it to their musical plan. Those who like a bit of 70’s Jethro Tull, the Incredible String Band, Simon & Garfunkel (for their use of vocal harmonies) et al will enjoy this. ***1/2
