Album review: WAX ON WATER – The Drip
Howling Tempest Records [Release date 24.06.22]
Wax On Water are a three-piece led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Maya Damaris, and completed by drummer Garren Orr and guitarist Steven Blessing. They have already released two EPs this year under ‘The Drip’ handle and now Wax On Water unleash their sixteen song debut album.
The lead songs ‘How Long?’ and ‘The Tree’ are the album’s instant tracks, with ‘Don’t Bore Us’ another song with crossover appeal. The latter is based on control freaks who we all sadly get to meet at some stage in our lives.
‘Predictable’ is far from it, with Steven Blessing’s guitar adding that extra bit of musical class. It can lose its way a little on ‘All Over Me’ where the repetitive chorus refrain is a bit too much on repeated plays and the grungy ‘Love Won’t Leave Her’ lacks the spark of much of the album.
The surprise choice of covering the O’Jays tune ‘For The Love Of Money’ is a bold one and they pull it off, in an electro rock style. This and the grandiose pomp of ‘Prologue’ are fine examples of a band willing to go where the music takes them.
Wax On Water certainly pack plenty of musical ideas into ‘The Drip’, which could be the undoing of some bands, however, the album benefits from the focussed concepts and songwriting of Mata Damaris. One of 2022’s more intriguing listens and all the better for it. ***
