Quinny & Company are led by Illinois-born, London-based singer-songwriter Jim Bernard, who is joined by his daughter Sarah Bernard on vocals, Moody Blues flautist Norda Mullen, ex-Suzi Quatro drummer Colin Woolway, Big Country founding member Alan Wishart on guitar, and John Cheal on bass.
Says Jim: “Each song is a snapshot of the people and places we’ve passed along the way. These stories have been growing quietly for years and now it’s time to let them fly.”
Plenty to enjoy musically including the laidback ‘Under the Willow’, which features a wonderfully cool guitar solo. It is worth noting that the playing is of the high quality you’d expect given the pedigree of the musicians involved. Added to that, the production adds a warmth to the band’s overall sound.
Norda Mullen’s melodic flute underpins a heartfelt, dreamy vocal from Sarah on ‘Dreams’, whilst ‘Hold Me Tight’ has a catchy chorus and an upbeat little number.
‘Suzy & Alexander’ is the stand-out for this reviewer, recalling Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in its sound. Again the guitar solos are a thing of beauty.
The six songs on this EP seem to fly by but the good thing is you can listen again! An accomplished and very enjoyable debut EP check them out pronto. ***1/2
