Album review: STEVE HEWITT – Never Two Days The Same

STEVE HEWITT - Never Two Days the Same

Facebook [Release date 26.09.25]

It’s a creeper this album. At first I put it in the Jack Johnson, David Gray area of music. Kind of easy listening folk music, pleasant enough but not a lot of depth. But scratch beneath the surface, and you’ll find a man concerned about the state of the world as in Cold World, and some great insights into relationships with, amongst others, ‘If I Said It To You’, which at the moment is my favourite track on this eleven song album. Maybe because it’s a good toe tapper, but I really like the words too. All his words are written with interesting takes into relationships, the world, and spirituality.

This is Steve’s second album. I haven’t heard his first one but this is apparently stripped back instrumentally to accentuate the complexity of the songs. Because of the sparseness it shows off some nice harmonic backing vocals, and Steve’s guitar playing, in which I can hear echoes of John Martyn, and touches of Mark Knopfler.

The small group of musical accomplices comprise of Paul West on vocals and drums, Louise Parsons vocals, Ant Wellman on bass and Miriam Cox on cello.

Steve hails from Kent and has supported some makers and shakers in the folk world including Mark Simpson and Newton Faulkner, and has also played some credible festivals including The British Country Music Festival, Car Fest and The Black Deer Festival, which will hopefully come back this year. I can imagine he goes down well in a live setting, even with just his guitar and rich toned vocals. Any number of songs from this album would make a good live set. ***
