Single review: LEONI JANE KENNEDY – Sloe

ljk

Bandcamp [Release date 21.08.25]

Sloe is Leoni’s fourth single of 2025. Of course it has some great playing from Leoni, and it has clever time signature changes, one of them containing some nifty interplay between guitar and Hammond organ. All the things you would expect from a good prog song. But in my opinion it kind of goes nowhere, finishing or hanging on a strange jazzy vocal refrain which could have been taken from Jacky and Roy a late 60’s vocal jazz duo.

The song is an anti drink driving song, which is an honourable thing to use your musical platform for, but honestly, I would not deduce this from listening to the lyrics if I hadn’t been told. I thought it was about catching a breath and slowing down from the hectic lifestyles we lead.

Leoni has a lot going for her, she is out on tour playing guitar with The Anchoress in November, which she has done before. She has a debut originals album coming out this year, called Synthetic, (her first album was an acoustic covers album of Rush songs), and she has a lot of music biz heavy weights fighting her corner and quite rightly so.

I do really like Leoni’s output, she is an amazing guitar player and her voice is like melting butter but this single just didn’t cut it for me. You can’t please everyone, and no doubt her fans will love it.

It is available now. ***
