Album review : VELVETEEN QUEEN – The Greater Good

Who said Glamrock is dead? Not me. And certainly not Velveteen Queen.

This band from Gothenberg is Glamrock’s second generation European progeny, whose rock’n’roll music has a solid sonic core and always has something interesting happening at the edges.

The band consists of Samuel Nilsson on vocals, Lukas Axx and Noah Mardh on guitars, with Isac Borg and Vilmer Fall on drums and bass. The Greater Good is their second album, succeeding Consequence of The City (me neither), released in 2024.

You’re always going to sound like the bands you listened to growing up. Informed by edgy, high intensity punk rock and clearly influenced by seminal bands, Hanoi Rocks, The New York Dolls, Guns’n’Roses and Motley Crue, VQ enter the fray with the all the strut and substance of the Sunset Strip’s glory days. Iron fists in velvet gloves.

Opener ‘Too Far Gone’ begins life with some funky country guitar picking before dredging up some dirty riffs and springing into life. It might remind you of Christian Rock giants, Guardian (It would be hard to pick out Samuel Nilsson’s voice from a vocalist’s line up that included Jamie Rowe), with a chorus straight out of the Our Lady Peace songbook.

‘The Greater Good’, a bittersweet symphony for today, plus the chilled out ‘Chains’ are fullfat slices of the band’s exotic mixture of rock and glam.
Produced with one foot in the present by famed Scandi producer, Soren Anderson.

Having successfully and impressively shared stages with Judas Priest and Alice Cooper, Velveteen Queen write and perform with the requisite verve and muscle. The one two punch of ‘Talk Or Walk’ and ‘Adrenaline’ are especially worth picking out. Anthemic Rock songs both, with memorably melodic hooks, powered throughout by an electrifying current of confidence and craft.

Which in fact, applies to the entire album. ****
