Album review: CREDO – We the Disconnected

credo

Gargoyle Records [Release date 23.10.26]

Credo are back with their fourth studio album and their first new release in 15 years. It is a double-CD album, written by all the band members Tim Birrell (guitar), Mark Colton (vocals), Gerald (Mully) Mulligan (drums), Jim Murdoch (bass, backing vocals) and Mike Varty (keys, backing vocals), with Varty producing, engineering and mastering. Mixing was handled by Threshold’s Karl Groom and that man Mike Varty again!

It’s been a long-time coming with Covid, health issues and Credo’s quest for the strongest set of songs possible, all contributing.

We The Disconnected looks at the fractured world we live, with personal reflections on workplace burnout, social isolation, political disillusionment, grief, addiction, and the increasingly bewildering demands of contemporary society. There are sparks of light and hope dotted throughout the album, so fear not dear listener… Instrumental ‘Bonkersaria’ (with a bit of choral improv!) provides a bizarre and addictive bit of light relief on the second disc.

Something many can relate too, whatever your age and stage is workplace pressure and burnout, which form the lyrical basis of ‘Losing My Reason’. Mark Colton’s vocals have grown stronger with age and life experience, still with that Fish sound at times and Mike Varty’s keys are a thing of beauty throughout this song, and indeed the whole album.

‘Table For One’ looks at life on the road and widens its scope to include fragile mental health and the distorted realities created by social media. The keys and drumming of Gerald (Mully) Mulligan take the musical spotlight on this song, along with the keys and guitar wig out by Tim Birrell midway through the song.

The two stand out tracks for this reviewer are ‘Tell Us Why’ and ‘Flowers by the Roadside’. Turning to ‘Tell Us Why’, the song reflects on the continuing tragedy of mass school shootings in the US. Maybe not an easy issue to tackle in under eight minutes, however, Credo succeeds in this. The spoken chorus adds menace to the song and the keys and guitar again steal the musical show.

‘Flowers By the Roadside’ starts quietly, building into a beast of a tune. As the title suggests the lyrics look at the heartbreak of those left behind by human tragedy. Fifteen minutes of music and it seems to pass by in a flash. It is really two songs in one as midway through we get another guitar and keys solos and the tempo ups slightly.

Not far behind ‘Round And Round’ reflects the individual cost of drug culture. Underpinned by a groovy bass line from Jim Murdoch, this is a close as Credo get to a single. It is the most instant song on the album and a perfect entry point for a new listener to the band.

It has been worth the wait for ‘We the Disconnected’ and Credo prove yet again they are most probably the best progressive band you have never heard. If you have been lucky enough to listen to their previous albums this one blows them out of the water. A masterclass in modern progressive music from a band that aren’t afraid to express their feelings through both the lyrics and music. Marvellous. ****1/2
