InsideOut Music [Release date 25.09.26]
Pure Reason Revolution formed in 2003, heavily influenced by the 90s alternative metal scene, giving a solid yet aggressive edge to the metal. A few line-up changes, and a split/reformation later, the band’s new album (again on Inside Out Music) is a heavy and thoroughly enjoyable affair.
The band centre around Jon Courtney (guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion), Annicke Shireen (vocals) and Ravi Kesavaram (drums), there are plenty of guest musicians spread across the tracks, the additional piano, keyboards, bass and drums helping fill the sound.
Opening track Spin Like Fire has some crunchy in-your-face guitar, yet in contrast the dual male/female vocals come over quite melodic, a good balance. Black-Arrow Acrobats kicks off more downbeat and mellow, almost experimental, with some heavy outbursts, some interesting rhythms.
Haywire keeps up the jangly yet rough crunching heavy feel, again the dual vocals works very well. And the alternating heavy and almost ambient sections do give a bit of a grungy feel.
The title track is a 12 minute affair with an edgy ambient rock feel at the start, some interesting heavy guitar work, the effects as good as the playing. If experimental nu rock could go prog, this is nodding in that direction. Closing track Hold Your Wrath, and just under 15 minutes, is another lengthy meandering exploration of experimental alternative metal. Some intricate drum work during a quiet period, it gets atmospheric at times, crunching at others. Much as the music and playing are indeed excellent, however (and maybe I’m missing something here) the longer tracks don’t really take you on an obvious journey but meander through moods.
Still, really worth a listen, its explorativeness is work exploring. ****
