If their married life is as harmonious as their vocal harmonies, then they should see at least their ruby wedding anniversary.
Presenting their second album, Way Out West after a five year gap since their debut, Hannah Elizabeth and Griff Jameson have honed in their song writing, to deliver 12 or 13 really well crafted songs. The first track on the album The New Town, could be a Mamas and Papas song from the late sixties, and from there they diversify all over the folk/roots genre. The Mamas and Papas reference should give a clue as how close their voices sit together.
Every song is good, there is no filler. They sing about the Welsh Valleys and communities where Griff hails from , then catch a plane to Nashville and Mississippi, without missing a heartbeat. Some great story telling weaves through their musical cloth, like a fine thread of gold braid.
You may have noticed I said 12 or 13 songs, this is because if you leave the cd running, a wonderful bonus track comes on which isn’t credited. It is about a brothers hand me downs, and at first you think the obvious – clothes. But it turns out the narrator inherited his brothers old hand me down guitar on which they learn to play after giving it some TLC. Whether this is a true story or not I don’t know, but it is delightful tale set to a simple musical background and a wonderful way to round off the album.
As well as their own outstanding vocals and playing – Hannah on violin and Griff on guitar, they rope in a plethora of sidemen and women to enhance various tracks, including Griff’s brother Gafyn on bass Hammond organ and piano, as well as Lachlan Golder, banjo mandolin, electric guitar and bass, Tom Docherty drums, Eddie James, flute, and Kathy Pilkington and The Ty’r Pwll Mob on additional vocals. The Mob create a great rollicking anti wealth rant on YCHAFI, which is a Welsh expression of disgust or disapproval.
My favourite tracks are the tender Nos Da Cariad, and the up tempo Hammer Those Keys, with Taffy On The Mississippi coming a close third.
They are about to set out on an Autumn tour, watch out for them, and get a copy of this album while you are there. ****
