It couldn’t be any less than five stars, it really couldn’t.

Supported by Georgia Nevada from Cambridge, who came over as a coquettish Dolly Parton type figure. She wasn’t rough enough round the edges for my liking, but a large portion of the crowd appreciated her. Singing mostly her own songs apart from 4 Non Blondes hit What’s Going On, stand out songs for me were Cookie Cutter and a song about playing a local festival and seeing an ex boyfriend in the crowd, which was called My Town I think.

And then………… you knew, you just knew when they got up on that stage, that five hairy blokes and a high cheek boned female singer were going to deliver something good. The feeling was in the air, they exuded confidence, they exuded that je ne sais quoi , that magic dust that only certain people in the music business naturally have. Providence is looking down on Parker Barrow right now, and the audience was looking up and begging to be slaughtered in a frenzied 70’s inspired rock n roll attack. And they were, mercilessly, apart from a lower key moment in the middle when Megan Kane and Alex Bender sat down on seats and delivered Olivier Lane and Ruby’s Reckoning, both off their new album Hold The Mash.

This was so 70’s inspired that everybody did a solo including Dylan Turner on drums. My mate looked at me open mouthed when the drum solo kicked in, but you know what, it was right for this gig it was right for this band, and he is an exceptional drummer. Both of us were trying to remember when we last heard a drum solo, his was Hawkwind when Ginger Baker was playing with them, and it had to be, it was Ginger Baker. I think mine was the last time I saw Yes with Bill Bruford playing with them! A random guy next me with a big grin on his face, said wow, so retro but so brilliant.

The whole band were obviously enjoying playing, particularly Megan Kane who never stopped smiling the whole night, and never stopped moving, except for the seated part. She moves non stop, but still delivers her trademark soaring and unique vocals. And this was near the end of the tour, but her vocal was as strong as ever. Ive said before she is like a Duracell bunny, just bouncing around non stop in what seems like a constant state of bliss. But I would say that last statement covers the whole band. They are on a mission, and they obviously enjoy that mission.

So to the set – they hit us full on with Nothing Left To Save, the latest single from Hold The Mash. Megan has claimed she went out of her comfort zone in this song, the last song recorded for the album, but last night she was well within that zone, setting the scene for the next hour or so.

Next came Blinded which the audience were singing along to, not bad for the second song in the set. Followed closely by Novacaine, both from Hold The Mash

After a little hello and this is what we’re going to do speech from Megan, (play some songs form the first album and their newly released Hold The Mash), they then played Don’t Tell Mama (What Mama Don’t Know) and Throwing Stones from their first album, and then my personal favourite of the night, and off the new album The Healer. But you know, first album, second album personal favourites, it matters not a jot as they are all going to be rock n roll classics before long. The main song writing team of drummer Dylan Turner and guitarist Alex Bender, are in the zone of writing spectacular songs, and long may it continue. They probably got played

loads of 70’s music by their parents, then grew up and started searching out newer bands in this idiom and it’s all sunk in like a sponge, and the squeeze out is Parker Barrow.

A little bluesy number Back To Birmingham came next which sat well with the audience. Hell they all sat well with the audience.

Next were the sitting down bits. I think the small fold up seats came as a bit of a shock as there were smiles all round the band, maybe they are used to higher bar stools, but it was a great interlude, a bit like Mick n Keef used to do in the early 70’s. As I’ve said before they played Oliviers Lane and Ruby’s Reckoning. Ruby’s Reckoning is a lovely little honky tonk country blues number with some outstanding keyboard work from Eric Safka. Oliviers Lane starts out acoustically and builds up into a beautiful band work out.

And next ladies and gentlemen Count Your Dollars, from the first album with solos from all the band except poor old Kyle Priber on bass, but he proved his worth all the way through the show locking in with Dylan to create the groove. Throughout the show there was some great guitar dueling and weaving between Alex and Will Tipton the second guitarist but non more so than on this number. Megan stood at the back near the drums and the smile on her face said she was enjoying it all as much as the audience were.

They finished on Make It and encored with Peace Love And Rock n Rollin’ leaving the stage with as much energy and pizzaz as they started with. And a very apt sentiment to finish on

I have to say I enjoyed this gig more than any gig I have attended for years. It took me back to the excitement of my youth seeing a band for the first time, before I became a jaded old curmudgeon, but that’s what I mean, it takes a lot to fire up my juices to this extent, but I loved every minute of it, as did the whole audience. It was great to part of such an appreciative audience in such an intimate setting.

By the time you read this the tour will have finished but they are coming back to these shores in November/ December. If you are fan of raunchy rock n roll or southern rock, or amazing female vocalists, or amazing guitar playing, keyboard slaying or drums and bass foundation laying please go out to see them and become one of the converted.
