Album review: ANN WILSON & TRIPSITTER – Consecrated Ground

ANN WILSON & TRIPSWITCH - Consecrated Ground

Label Logic [Release date 14.08.26]

2023′s ‘Another Door’ was an indicator that Ann Wilson had reignited her musical mojo. Often referred to as one of the greatest female vocalists in rock, since 2019 Heart reunions have been affected by both internecine impasse and Ann’s health issues. Shortly to premiere a docufilm, her collaboration with Tripsitter is simply made in heaven and should endure.

The great thing about this album are the songs and Tripsitter’s instrumentation which are a superb canvas for Wilson’s immaculate vocal. A track like ‘Me And Comanche’ is a little Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant in feel (a big influence on Wilson in the seventies) but whilst various throwbacks are present, the whole effect is a revelation. It’s how you always wanted to hear Ann Wilson.

Heart of course had an infinite number of real bangers in their repertoire always following a classic hard rock or melodic hard rock style. ‘Consecrated Ground’ and its predecessor is a good example of superior indie rock but it still yields some radio-friendly gems such as ‘Hard Fought’, ‘Hot Foot’ and ‘Reverse Chaos’.

When things slow down such as on ‘I Will Not Be Coming Back’ it is Wilson’s vocal that shines through and you feel she could really lift anything ordinary.

There’s nothing here that is ordinary and ‘Consecrated Ground’ is another real triumph. ****
