Album review: GREY DELISLE – Don’t Turn Around

Hummingbird Records [Release date 13.11.26]

While a lot of artists at the moment are pulling on the 70’s for inspiration, Grey Delisle harks right back to the 50’s and Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lyn territory, with a dash of Lefty Frizell in the arrangements. Although she dips dip her toe into the 60’s with single Don’t Turn Around. This song actually sparked the whole album off.

Apparently Grey is one of Hollywood’s most sought after voice over actresses , with Scooby Doo, The Simpsons, The Fairly Odd Parents, Avatar, The Last Airbender and The DC Universe among her list of credits. Whilst on the set of SpongeBob SquarePants she struck up a friendship with Andy Paley, a composer songwriter and producer, with Brian Wilson and Patti Smith amongst his credits. He only knew Grey as voiceover actress for cartoons until she told him she was a songwriter, and played him Don’t Turn Around. He was immediately on board. Unfortunately half way through the album Paley was diagnosed with throat cancer and passed soon after. The production mantel was taken over by long term collaborator Marvin Etzioni with help from Jake Gideon Lucky for us the project wasn’t shelved as between them all they have produced a remarkable album.

Grey has a unique innocent sounding voice, but can pull out some chops with attitude when needed like on The Lights Are Off But Somebody’s Home, which kind of crosses into Alanis Morissette, scorned woman terrain.

Delisle has some amazing musicians with her including Old 97’s bassist Murry Hammond, Stephen McCarthy of The Long Ryders, Deke Dickerson, Greg Lisz, Chris Scruggs, Tammy Rogers Bernie Dresel, Mandy Barnett and Micky Raphael, all bona fide and authentic 50’s and country aficionado’s.

The songs are mostly end of relationship songs but she has her way of describing the event without saying it’s over. Like Your Mama Doesn’t Love Me Anymore, where you can hear her missing her relationship with the mother in law as much as the lover. Or Every Day of The Week Ends in Why, the first track on the album, which pulled me in immediately with its clever double entendre. Or You’re Driving Me Away with it’s car, road and cold steel door metaphors sung over a wonderful mariachi rhythm with Dave Alvin adding his baritone delivery to the duet.

Her voice often sounds like the girl next door singing a Shangri La’s song in the shower, with the window open, often understated but just perfect for her songs, and listening again to Don’t Turn around I can see why Andy Paley was easily swayed.

Eleven songs in all, each telling it’s own well crafted story , including Disneyland about an end of world adventure which features some addictive guitar work, and the sparsely arranged Don’t Break The String. The whole album has a real warmth to it, like all good authentic country albums should have, and with this being her sixth album in four years I have got some catching up to do, and I hope you will have too. ****
