Album review: MASON HILL – World So Wonderful

MASON HILL - World So Wonderful

7Hz Productions [Release date 23.10.26]

The latest Mason Hill album is a considerable departure for the band, following the loss of original vocalist Scott Taylor and the arrival of Tom Ward. They seem to have toughened up for a more metallic delivery and, frankly, it’s as wonderful as it’s title might suggest.

With Kris Barras sadly announcing his departure from music, following one of the best metal albums of the year, there is ample opportunity for the Scottish rockers to move into the space. And be standard bearers for a British take on a traditionally American idiom that has been the preserve of bands like Shinedown, Three Days Grace and more recently  From Ashes To New.

The album is full of relentless downtuned riffs and uplifting choruses starting with opener ‘Burn It Down’. The early singles ‘Twisted’ and ‘Hurricane’ reinforce the album’s infectiousness and immediacy whilst ‘Twisted Wings’ is another highlight.

Tracks like ‘Resonate’ and ‘Without You’ (with more metalcore vocal elements) will pummel you into a vortex of submission along with the jaunty ‘Silence’.  The two slower tracks are great too!

The band have had their ups and downs since forming in 2015. The loss of a vocalist due to health issues, Covid, and poor early promotion. There was a gap of six years following the release of their debut EP and the album ‘Against The Wall’ in 2021.

Back in 2021 Jason Ritchie wrote “given their self-belief and undoubted talent are certain to give it their best shot and with a bit of luck will succeed.”

Seemingly out of the shadows, and out of adversity, Mason Hill have come back with a contender (with Barras) for metal album of the year. *****
