Album review: ANZI – Black Dog Bias
Chemical Music Enterprises [Release date 22.06.15]
“Black Dog Bias” is the sophomore album from London-based Finnish musician Anzi…who’s he then? Well he used to be the vocalist in Finnish punk rockers Stereo Junks! Nope that doesn’t help… well he used to go under the name of Anzi Destruction but was Antero to his parents…anyway to the music on offer…
“Black Dog Bias” is full of dark, angry, thought provoking industrial punk rock anthems torn from the same cloth as Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke and The Prodigy. The album title refers to the phenomenon whereby the black dogs are always the ones left until last at dog shelters and the songs themselves covers topics ranging from prejudice, fear and stereotypes…Anzi is basically telling us to not judge a book by its cover…
Proceedings kick off with the incessant Revival and commercial sounding I let You Dive whose chorus sounds uncannily like one of my favourites, Gravity Kills and in whose video Anzi looks like a cross between Billy Idol and Michael Monroe.
False Saints is the best track on here from its industrial opening, sneered verses and unrelentless chorus…you just can’t help tapping your feet (or banging your head) to this one.
The songs do blur into each other a little with the only change of pace being offered by the highly atmospheric last track Delusions which comes off sounding like an epic Mission-like acoustic number.
Nothing particularly original on here but “Black Dog Bias” is an effective slice of post-apocalyptic industrial punk which bears repeated listens.
If Killing Joke are your thing then you’ll not be disappointed by this one. ***½
