Eagle Records [Released 24.07.15]
Another live album from Styx, their ninth in total now and you may wonder if the world needs another one? Heck yes, as the band are in a purple patch live wise, sadly not recording wise as like fellow veteran classic rock bands new albums are a rarity (Styx’s last album of new material was 2003′s ‘Cyclorama’).
The set list features nothing post-’Paradise Theater’ album, so no ‘Mr Roboto’! Plenty of classics though and in Lawrence Gowan they have a very energetic focal point, plus he sings the Dennis de Young songs very well. Don Felder pops up to guest on ‘Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)’, a real rocking highlight, as is ‘Superstars’, where the band’s tight harmony vocals get a good showcase.
Long standing members James ‘JY’ Young and Tommy Shaw still crank out those guitar riffs, in fact James Young is the most vocal at this show after Lawrence Gowan. Original bassist Chuck Panozzo guests on a couple of songs and special mention to powerhouse drummer Todd Sucherman who really lets fly on the crowd pleaser ‘Come Sail Away’.
Styx are a real must see live band and are way overdue another visit to the UK. Until then fans worldwide can enjoy this live album showing the band at the top of their game. ****
