AFM Records [Release date 18.03.16]
The Last Vegas are an American sleazy hard rock band and somehow they have managed to get their latest release “Eat Me” released on a German metal label…
The band hail from Chicago, Illinois and still feature the Arling brothers Adam and Nathan (guitar and drums respectively) from their first release “Lick ‘Em & Leave ‘Em” back in 2004. Vocalist Chad Cherry joined shortly after and bassist Danny Smash followed…completing the current line-up is new guitarist Bryan Wilkinson who replaced founding guitarist Johnny Wator after the band released “Sweet Salvation” in 2014.
First thing’s first…just what is with the garish artwork…a rainbow coloured birthday cake with icing lettering…well I suppose it makes “Eat Me” stand out from everything else!
So to the music…”Eat Me” has eleven numbers ranging from the Enuff Z’nuff psychedelic balladry of Universe & You, the groove laden Hot Fudge which brings classic 1970’s Aerosmith to mind to Bloodthirsty which veers between Cheap Trick verses and snarling Guns N’Roses choruses.
There is nothing remotely original on here but it is all enjoyable brash rock’n’roll. Vocalist Chad Cherry is Tom Keifer on Along For The Ride which sounds like the love child of Cinderella and Nazareth…there is even a touch of Cher on here with its “gypsies, tramps & thieves” refrain. Anything It Takes brings back the Enuff Z’nuff influence with a bit of Pop Evil thrown into the mix.
Hard To Get Over (You’re So) deserves a special mention as the first minute is just the clip clop of wooden blocks and Chad’s gravel vocals…different…
Nothing earth shattering but “Eat Me” is an enjoyable romp through the sleazy rock’n’roll underbelly of the 1980’s LA music scene. ***½
