Album review: SPACE CREAM – Pterodactyl Sky

SPACE CREAM - Pterodactyl Sky

Space Cream are a four piece glam/prog outfit from Hollywood (where else?) fronted by the fulsome Savannah Pope.

While Pope is dolled up like a Rocky Horror Show or sci-fi B-movie extra, the band conform to the standard rock attire but Pope is so visually imposing the initial impression of Space Cream is of a zany bunch, with Pope giving Lady Gaga a run for her money (in a budget sort of a way).

Pope’s song titles are equally ‘off the wall’, including numbers such as ‘Nefarious Lothario’, ‘Pterodactyl Sky’, and ‘Leave Dracula Alone’.

So are they ‘for real’?  Or just looking to create a buzz through being outrageous?  After listening to their 8 track debut I still can’t decide.  I suspect Pope maybe is ‘one of a kind’.  One thing, for sure though, is that she has a fantastic voice.  And the band  Dizzy Joan (guitar), Saul Slotnick (bass) and Zak Ryan (drums) provide the perfect backdrop for her to demonstrate her chops.

There’s no flashy production, no pyrotechnics, no frills, just a very tight (but suitably ‘loose’) garage style rock band.  I was reminded in their simplicity, but effectiveness, of the early Alice Cooper band in this case fronted by Ann Wilson and Fee Waybill’s bastard love child who inherited her mother’s voice and father’s dress sense.

For real?  I’ve no idea.  But it’s refreshing, and features some of the best female vocals I’ve heard in a good while.  *****
