MARION This World And Body/The Program (reissues)
Edsel [Release date 16.09.16]
Marion were formed in Macclesfield in 1993 by then students Jamie Harding and Phil Cunningham, who had previously been in various bands together.
The band’s first album, 1996’s This World And Body, make number 10 in the UK album charts and yielded the hit, ‘Sleep’, which is the one son non-fans may have heard of.
Sound wise they sound a little like Echo & the Bunnymen and the Smiths (in the guitar sound) and along with ‘Sleep’, ‘Fallen Through’ and ‘Let’s Go Together’ are great tunes. This expanded edition of the album has three CD’s – the original album, a bonus disc of B-sides and acoustic versions and a whole disc made-up of BBC radio sessions.
The band’s second album The Program came out in 1998 and lacks the tunes the debut had, although fans will be delighted to have the ‘Sparkle’ EP, which was available in Japan only previously, and tracks recorded in Johnny Marr’s studio.
They split-up in 1999 for the first time and have had various reunions since, the latest being in 2014 with a plan to play gigs this year. These however have been put on hold as Jamie Harding is currently in prison. Phil Cunningham went on to become a member of New Order where he remains to this day.
Perfect for fans of the band who never seemed to capitalise on the initial interest and positive feedback on their debut album. ***

HANA PIRANHA Fishing With Dynamite
Hana Piranha release their second album on the back of a recent Pledge Music campaign. The band are centred around Hana Maria, who also pops up in Birdeatsbaby as violinist/vocalist.
An interesting mix of music, as you have the vocals of Hana Maria (sounding a little like Juliette Lewis and Pink on the more punk pop numbers like ‘Sexy As Hell’) backed by crashing guitars and her violin playing on some songs, where she plays like the proverbial whirling dervish.
‘Only A Vampire’ and ‘Kiss Me Like It’s The End Of The World’ transport you to a sweaty mosh pit (or at my age standing at the back watching everyone else in the mosh pit!). Classic anthemic pop/punk/rock, whilst ‘Sexy As Hell’ is an instant on the ears and ‘Voyeur’ successfully combines a metal beat/guitar riffs with her violin playing, impressive stuff.
Emotional fueled punk pop and Hana Maria has a voice you can’t ignore when you are listening to her. ***1/2
