Quick plays: SCARVED, OOBERFUSE
SCARVED Lodestone [Release date 03.03.17]
What springs to mind when you think about Belgium? World class beer, chocolate, and a national football team? Could female fronted rock be added to that impressive roster with the sophomore release from Scarved?
Fronted by impressive vocalist Caro Scarved, the band’s debut Dynamite (2014) seemed a little uncertain in direction spanning influences as diverse as Motorhead and Turn Back Time-era Cher. As a result, it seems to have failed to leave much by way of an indelible footprint on the web.
Lodestone adopts a more middle ground with the highly infectious, tongue in cheek lead single ‘Sweet Surrender’ taking its lead from acts like Motley Crue and Saxon, and ‘Convicted Voyage’ borrows unapologetically from Zep’s Immigrant Song.
There’s some crisp and appropriately chunky guitar work from Luc Vandessel, and the rhythm section of Wim ‘Wowie’ Wouters (bass) and Geert Marien (drums) ensure the pace seldom drops.
‘Toxic Rat Race’ is rooted in Sabbath, while ‘Heart Of Rock & Roll’ strays close to the AOR highway, and ‘Fight For Justice’ another engaging NWOHM style number. It all serves to underscore that Lodestone is another diverse release and whilst an entertaining listen, Scarved probably need to hone in on their own USP if they’re to make a significant contribution to Belgium’s GDP. ***

OOBERFUSE The Odd Ones [Release date 09.06.17]
They may have the ear of the likes of broadcasters Tom Robinson and Boy George, and garnered the praise of broadsheets like The Guardian, but to my ears Ooberfuse – London based duo Cherrie Anderson and Hal St John – are a little lightweight.
An electropop outfit, they blend the attributes of Abba and Yazoo, in a sugar coated package, and while previous releases (Still Love My Enemies (2011) and Seventh Wave (2012)) have incorporated dance techno elements, The Odd Ones is more out and out pop orientated.
It’s a pleasant enough listen, in an Ibiza holiday destination sort of way, and Anderson’s breathy vocals are very easy on the ear, but for those of us who’ve been around the block a few times they struck me as a current day equivalent of that ‘popular’ late seventies/early eighties duo, Dollar.
And like Dollar, I suspect Ooberfuse will equally divide opinion. **1/2
