Album review: BITCHES SIN – Predator

BITCHES SIN - Predator

Dissonance

Formed in 1980, Bitches Sin were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and have since issued a number of classic metal albums, including Invaders, Uduvudu, The Rapture and First Temptation. It’s a genuinely great catalogue.

This, their debut album, was originally issued on Heavy Metal Records in 1982 and features fantastic artwork from renowned illustrator Rodney Matthews.

Alongside guitarists Ian and Peter Toomey were drummer Mark Biddiscombe, bassist Martin Orum and Antony Tomkinson. And a solid unit they were too.

Opener April Fool is a chunky bluesy number, with a nod to Samson, with a beefed up cheese grater touch. There’s some very decent guitar work mid-song too. Haneka is more Crash Bang Wallop, one of several songs to nod towards the likes of Tygers or Jaguar.

Lady Lies has a good tempo without being too thrashy or cluttered, and there’s a bit of shred in there too. The odd track like Dirty Women is a little ordinary by comparison, but then you get Fallen Star which adds a touch of class. A hint of Quartz, some decent rhythms, and vocals and guitars to match.

Bitches Sin may be at the top of the second division, but the music is pretty damn good. The original LP is pretty rare now and with the rest of the (excellent) catalogue much more readily available (and for sale too and the band’s website), this is a very welcome release. Sadly there’s no booklet or much information beyond the track list and line-up, but it still looks, feels and sound lovely.  ***1/2
