Fearless Vampire Killers Koko, London Wednesday 31st October 2012
It was the final night of Fearless Vampire Killers current tour where they had been touring with the Dead Lay Waiting on ‘The Killing Is Dead Tour’. But tonight for one night only and on Halloween, FVK were supporting US shock-rockers Wednesday 13.
The venue looked great, and people had already started crowding towards the stage. After a while, pumpkins were appearing onstage, with the FVK logo carved onto them and soon, the band appeared themselves, dressed in their usual attire but with Halloween themed face paint and were greeted by a screaming crowd of people.
After a short intro and a cry of “We are Fearless Vampire Killers!” they plunged into the first song of the evening: ‘Fetish For The Finite’ which was followed by ‘Necromania’ , a piece that unleashed some moshers and pumped up the crowd. Afterwards was ‘Bite Down On My Winchester’ and ‘Could We Burn, Darling?’ all of which were incredible live performances. Co-Front man Laurence and guitarist Kier did their usual role swap, before playing ‘Bow Ties On Dead Guys’, a song that made the venue go slightly insane.
‘Concede, Repent, Destroy’ was next, causing quite a few people to mosh near the front of the stage. However, FVK decided to add a little twist to their setlist and did a cover of Wham!’s ‘Club Tropicana’ next, giving it a little more style, heavy guitar and a bit of screaming. But sadly, it did not go down too well with some members of the audience. Personally, I think their interpretation of the song was very original, but others thought not.
Another swap and Laurence was back on lead vocals, and the band soldiered on playing their new song ‘Exploding Heart Disorder’, with each member nailing all the vocal melodies and harmonies perfectly. After ‘Palace In Flames’, Fearless Vampire Killers departed with ‘At War With The Thirst’, making the crowd sing along, and ended their set on a high.
To conclude, FVK’s performance is a classic example of a band that sounds just as great live as they do on a CD. Despite some negative opinions, the 5-piece alternative ‘death-pop’ band from London maintained a strong show that really kicked some butt. The gig was a wonderful experience and I hope to see them soon headlining in KOKO :)
