Album review: AFFAIRE – Less Ain’t More

Since releasing their debut single in 2011, Portuguese band Affaire have stuck to their guns and delivered uncompromising 80’s style hard rock. New album “Less Ain’t More” follows in the footsteps of the band’s 2015 debut album “At First Sight”, featuring all the components of that big 80’s rock sound, and with its energy and great songs this is an album made for cranking.
The album opens with first single “Paradise Café”, complete with Bon Jovi style harmonies. This sets the ball rolling nicely. With “Southbay Blues” and “Nasty But True” featuring some great guitar work and the punch packing “Breaking Point” sitting alongside “Japanese Teaze ‘89” and “Unsung Heroes” as the album’s highlights.
Both the song writing and the musicianship on offer are of a high standard with the album being mastered by Phil Brewster, who has also worked with the likes of Sebastian Bach, Halestorm and The Darkness. However, the band previously had links to Vain’s Davy Vain and it would be interesting to not only hear him master the bands next album but to also produce, as his techniques would no doubt bring an additional level to the band’s sound.
There are elements of several well-known bands amongst the influences you can hear on “Less Ain’t” More” and the band have done well to reflect these without becoming either a cliché or a blatant carbon copy of someone else.
Affaire are a band that are not just a pastiche of the 80’s rock sound, they are a living breathing example of a band echoing that golden era that has literally sprung up a couple of decades later like the 90’s never existed. ****
