Album review: OTHERWISE – Defy
Mascot Records [Release date 08.11.19]
New signing to the Mascot label, although this is the fourth album from Otherwise. Otherwise are brothers’ vocalist Adrian and guitarist Ryan Patrick, bassist Tony “The Beast” Carboney and drummer Brian Medeiro.
Opening with a flourish on ‘Bad Trip’ which segues nicely into ‘Money’, a hit if ever there was one and the first of a few songs on here that recall Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy, plus at times Linkin Park and Nickelback. Another strong duo are ‘Don’t Even’ and ‘Fame And Fortune’, both mix metal/electronica with lyrics on the impact of social media. Powerful stuff and again songs with a strong melody at their core.
On a song like ‘Lifted’ they mix Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy sounds with some hardcore metal singing. It sounds bizarre but they make it work well. It all goes a bit screamo on ‘Unbreakable’, not quite my musical thing but plenty of others enjoy this. Mind you it starts off with synths and a strong rhythmic backing.
Very much a ‘now’ album both in terms of the music and lyrical content, Otherwise have in modern parlance a bit of a banger on their hands here. ***1/2
