Album review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – Parallel Lines

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate (HOGIA), namely Malcolm Galloway (lyrics, lead guitar, synths, mixing, mastering, producer) and Mark Gatland (bass, vocal engineer, additional guitars and synths, co-producer), are back with another album chock full of thoughtful & insightful lyrics (often with a science fiction connection) and some simply amazing musical passages. Kathryn Thomas also appears again on the album adding flute, bass flute, piccolo and vocals.

The album title refers to disconnection, both within ourselves, between our different or changing identities and social roles, and between each other. Many of the songs are sung from the perspective of characters who are experiencing situations that undermine their sense of self-identity. Some of the tracks are more directly personal, while others were influenced by science fiction stories that relate to these themes.

‘My Blistering Mind’ is sung from the perspective of someone struggling with mental health issues. It sees HOGIA go into almost electro beat territory and it is catchy little ditty. The lyrics certainly ring true with this reviewer.

HOGIA have always had a strong jazz influence in their sound and that shows on the instrumental ‘Intermission’. The other stand out instrumental is ‘Pretty Blue Fox’, named after after a game-playing group in Philip K Dick’s novel ‘The Game Players Of Titan’. Loving the piano runs on this and the tune’s overall uplifting/upbeat sound.

For those after a bit of prog keys and guitar wig out look no further than ‘Just Another Thing’. Like the aforementioned ‘Blistering Mind’, HOGIA have crafted another instant hit on the listener’s ears.

‘Just Hold On (Pts 1 and 2)’. The song is intended to represent someone encouraging someone else, or perhaps themselves, that it’s not too late to try to embrace life. From the first listen to the song with its choral intro, you know you are onto a winner. Then the guitar starts and the song increases even further in its delight! As intended the song’s lyrics offer hope and finish the album off in a positive state of mind.

We’ve been lucky here at GRTR! towers with a number of excellent new progressive music releases from both IT and Credo, and now we can add Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate to that list. HOGIA have their own unique sound which they have progressed further on this album and it comes highly recommended from this reviewer. ****
