SARI SCHORR - Running Wild

We’ve been following Sari Schorr’s musical progress since at least 2016, with Pete Feenstra an early supporter calling her “one of the finest blues-rock singers of our era”.

Sari’s most recent album (‘Never Say Never’, 2018) straddled rock as much as the blues/rock evidenced on her debut produced by the legendary late Mike Vernon. ‘Running Wild’ takes this a step further with a more integrated blues/rock/mainstream sound. It is destined to appeal to a wider audience.

Sadly it seems that – since 2018 – any momentum album-wise has been lost although Sari is a regular visitor to UK stages and in October she starts an extensive European tour. (In the interim she has released a live album and a collaboration with Robin Trower).

Sari’s vocal talents are not in question and she tears through the playlist starting with the early single ‘Mr In The Middle’. There is a radio-friendly buzz to the title track whilst an underpinning R&B vibe is present on the fairly perfunctory if well executed ‘Monday Morning’ and ‘Cool Hand Rider’.

It seems that her previous band has been jettisoned (including Ash Wilson on guitar) with Jamie Walker (guitar, bass) and Luke Paget (drums) who co-produced. Keyboard player Bennett Holland completes the line-up.

The album as a whole is a fine showcase for Sari’s vocals (and songwriting) and there is enough variety to invite repeated play. When it rocks, it rocks but when things slow down – as on ‘Man On Fire’ – the results are really satisfying.

The slow blues ‘Call It Freedom’ harks back to a track like ‘Letting Go’ on ‘A Force Of Nature’ and another great vocal showcase, along with ‘Afterglow’. ‘Elevate’ and ‘Better Day’ are like a female fronted Bad Company (Sari covered ‘Ready For Love’ on her second album).

An autobiographical approach is never far away in terms of lyrical content and album closer ‘Finding My Way’ sums up this aspect and her comment that with this album “I’ve reached a deeper understanding of who I am as an artist.”

Interestingly, when Andy Nathan reviewed Sari’s gig in 2024 she played a couple of new pieces but they don’t appear here. ‘Highway 69′ in particular had Andy salivating.

Over the past decade we’ve watched several artists change their game in terms of genre and widening their potential audience. Joanne Shaw Taylor is a good case in point and my guess is that Sari’s next solo album (hopefully released sooner than later!) could take her more in that direction. For the moment ‘Running Wild’ is a formidable statement. ****
