Medium Expectations/Thirty Tigers [Release date 31.01.20]
Dustbowl Revival present their fifth album and one that sees them shift away from their original Dixieland jazz, swing and Depression-era folk songs.
The band revolves around the singing talents of Z Lupetin and Liz Beebe, both of whom combine well together when required, none more so than on ‘Sonic Boom’. On this one for some reason Lupetin’s vocals remind me of the Everley Brothers!
The radio friendly ‘Penelope’ has a Paul Simon vibe to it – particularly in the instrumental break – one of the album’s many highlights. The opening duo ‘Dreaming’ and ‘Enemy’ are also easy on the ear and perfect for repeated plays. Dustbowl Revival have a knack of producing instant melodies, performed by a very talented group of musicians.
Exisiting fans will be pleased to note that their jazz/New Orleans roots are still present and correct on the up-tempo ‘Nobody Knows (Is It You)’, where the song’s character accidently wins the US presidential race – remind you of anybody?! The horns and fiddle combine beautifully on here.
If like me you haven’t acquainted yourself with the music of Dustbowl Revival before now, make sure you get a copy of this album. A gloriously fulfilling mix of folk, pop, Americana and a few touches of jazz. ****
