EP review: RAY FENWICK – Going Large

Ray Fenwick “goes large” in this promotional audio for the new EP (Singsong Music) (11:29)

A Ray Fenwick interview special will be broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio on Sunday 14 February 18:00 GMT.

RAY FENWICK - Going Large

Singsong Music [Release date 15.01.21] www.rayfenwick.com

Ray Fenwick is perhaps best known for lending his name to any number of album/single credits as a session player.  But he’s also had a varied and colourful history in bands such as Spencer Davis Group,  The Ian Gillan Band, Fancy and the Forcefield project with the likes of Cozy Powell and Graham Bonnet.  In fact, this year Ray celebrates 60 years in the music business, an amazing achievement.

And what better way than to bring the story up to date with five tracks that sum up his musical modus operandi?  Fine playing, production and composition.  The title of ‘Going Large’ was inspired by a random comment from a student he taught at Boston College in Lincolnshire and is a pulsating workout that fuses jazz rock and funk.

‘Tam Tam’ is a perfect late night listen, a smooth jazz piece with ear candy hooks throughout.

‘Firepower 44′ was co-written with another guitarist Will Thomson and is widescreen in execution whilst the bustling ‘Trade Winds’ and pneumatic ‘Blue Jays’ complete an EP of unfettered funk.

It’s going to be a busy year for our guitar hero.  A Fancy box set is imminent and spring will see a 3-CD anthology celebrating his diamond jubilee.  Hats off to Ray. *****
