Brick Briscoe, what a great discovery. Hands up who’s heard of him. One or two at the back yeah. So I’d never heard of him either, but I’m damned glad I’ve been hipped to him now.
He says his influences are Paul Weller, through every incarnation, Thelonius Monk, and Patti Smith. Although he sounds like none of these artists. He sounds unique, like, say, Lou Reed, or Warren Zevon, or Devo. He sounds like none of these either, I’m just throwing artists into the mix who do what they do without compromise, without living up to somebody else’s ideal, or without living up to the expectations of the music business.
He spewed out a line on the fifth track Final Romance, which, on first listening literally made me laugh out loud. It was – (spoiler alert) “I’ll never have to hear you say again good morning I don’t like your shirt why don’t you shave and get a fucking job “It is a song about a break up put succinctly into this line. All his lines are good, and he has titles like Scrambled Eggs And Mondays, where he does actually sing about scrambled eggs.
The first track Slow Parade Of Flowers reminds me of Three Imaginary Boys era Cure. The rest of the music is very sparce, delivered by a three piece band, drums, bass and guitar, sometimes just bass and guitar, sometimes just guitar. But this doesn’t distract from the appeal, in fact it adds to it, in my mind anyway. Brick is also a film maker, and his songs sometimes feel like you are listening to an arthouse road movie.
I was surprised by his age, as he sounds like a much younger man. I don’t know how old he is but is isn’t a young man. He recently got diagnosed with cancer and sessions for his 2018 album IV was recorded and mixed whilst he was undergoing chemo in a hospital setting. Which somehow seems appropriate for this artist. He sounds like a fighter, and a thinker and a lover of life.
From what I can gather this is his sixth album since 2013, and I hope he gets to make more. I love artists like this who can’t be categorised ,and if you like the above three I’ve mentioned, and maybe Leonard Cohen, or latter Tom Waits, then I think you’ll like this guy. Again he doesn’t sound like either, but if you put them all in a bag and gave them a good shake, maybe you’ll tip Brick Briscoe out. ****
