Album review: THE OUTLAW ORCHESTRA – Power Cut

THE OUTLAW ORCHESTRA – Power Cut

Website [Release date 26.03.21]

The Outlaw Orchestra, who love southern rock, blues and country, via their hometown of Southampton, follow up last year’s enjoyable ‘Pantomime Villains’ with this mini-album.

As singer/guitarist Dave Roux explains “When we’re not on the road, we miss the stage and hanging with our outlaw buddies. When the bottles run empty, our country roots come out, usually in the small hours, so we’ve taken a handful of our favourite songs and played them as we would in a backroom, after folks have gone home, the chairs are up, lights are down and there are no wires or amps“.

So what do we get on here? Eight tracks, although only six songs as the opening and closing tracks set the scene, in that the band are meant to be playing a live electric set for radio when there is a power cut, hence they go acoustic.

Two of the songs appeared on the ‘Pantomime Villains’ album, namely ‘Chicken Fried Snake’ and ‘Send Some Whiskey Home’. Both sound great in acoustic form, where the pedal steel and banjo take centre stage on the music side of things.

Despite the band being tongue-in-cheek with their lyrics, they are consummate musicians which you can really appreciate on these acoustically driven songs.

‘Rattlesnake Sour’ is a proper blues foot stomper, complete with slide. This one will sound great live. ‘Back To Georgia’ is a fine piece of banjo led blues/southern rock – something say Blackfoot would have done in their prime.

‘God Knows’ first appeared a couple of years ago and gets a laid back revamp on here. L.A. based Trish Burke Manser provides additional vocals. It was planned that she would have featured in the video, however it wasn’t possible, hence Dave Roux steps in for her – in a dress and make-up!

It is very difficult for bands at the moment as they can’t road test new songs or indeed play songs from anything released last year. That makes it all the more satisfying to see bands like the Outlaw Orchestra try some of their existing songs in stripped back form and add in a few new songs too. This will keep their existing fans happy until live shows recommence and hopefully pull in a few new ones. ****

Album review: BEN RANDALL – Before The Rain

BEN RANDALL - Before The Rain

Thoroughbred Music    [Release date: 02.04.21] www.benrandallguitar.com

For me, it’s always been about the guitar.

Back in the day, from the moment I heard Paul Kossoff’s wailing Les Paul on the early Free albums, I was hooked. Koss, Blackmore, Iommi, Peter Green, et al all moved me in mysterious ways.

And here’s another to add to the list – Ben Randall. One time plank spanker with Power Quest and Code Of Silence and collaborator with the likes of 25 Yard Screamer and Chasing The Monsoon, who has used the past two years (and the year of lockdown in particular) to pull together an epic solo guitar album of mercurial playing and astonishing virtuosity.

Although genre-bending in a way, Randall’s oeuvre places him at the centre-point of a triangle that has Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana and Yngwie J Malmsteen at its angles and ‘Before The Rain’ is not so much a debut solo album as a collection reflecting a decade of music making.

Drawing on his time with Paul Logue and Code Of Silence as well as his aforementioned collaborations, Ben has re-mixed, re-recorded and tweeked where appropriate, and put together fourteen tracks to captivate guitar nuts everywhere.

The opening track ‘Never Again’, was recorded as a demo with Chasing The Monsoon for what (eventually) became their fabulous ‘No Ordinary World’ album but was not included on the final release for some reason and features plenty of wailing guitar over a pounding beat.

The two 25 Yard Screamer tracks couldn’t be more different – ‘Mechanics Of Illusion’ features a great riff and lightning fast shredding, whereas ‘Ghost’ settles everything down with its laid back vocals, exquisite guitar and progressive rock tropes.

There are five tracks from the brilliant Code Of Silence – ‘Dark Skies Over Babylon’ album but not as we know it, Captain.

Randall has stripped out the vocals on all but one of the tracks and placed the guitar at the heart of things.

As a result, what were outstanding tracks anyway take on a new lease of life. ‘Seventh Seal’, ‘Black Abyss’ and ‘Midnight Cathedral’ sound re-born with the emphasis shifted onto the instrumentation and the guitar soaring over Scott McLean’s excellent keyboard work.

The vocals return on the unreleased single edit of ‘Dark Skies Over Babylon’s title track with Gus Monsanto and Joanna Ruiz combining to great effect on what was probably the album’s most commercial track.

And then there’s ‘Tame The Tempest’ in my opinion the best track on DSOB – with one of the finest power-riffs you’ll ever hear, Randall somehow takes it to another level with jaw-dropping guitar pyrotechnics.

The six Randall compositions display many facets of his playing – ‘Before The Rain’ and ‘Way To Burn’ are tracks Satriani would never have left off any of HIS albums, whereas ‘Love Finds A Way’ has Santana-like jazzy overtones and funky percussion.

The short ‘Reflections Of A Broken Dream’ is an effects-pedal workout and ‘Reasons For Believing’ is a guitar wig-out that reminds me of why I fell in love with the guitar in the first place.

‘Way To Burn’ and ‘Closer To The Truth’ bring the album to a fitting finale with more scorching riffs than you could shake a stick at and testament to Randall’s skills, not just with guitar in hand but also as a composer and arranger.

With Steve Kitch, The Pineapple Thief’s keyboard whizz, on mastering duties, the album sounds just as you’d want it to – right in your face and with the guitar front and centre.

All told, a breathtaking guitar album of the highest order from a player with other-worldly skills and, what’s more, an absolute blast.    *****

Album review: SUNSTORM – Afterlife

Frontiers Records [Release date 12.03.21]

Gone are the days of the Joe Lynn Turner fronted Sunstorm. Gone are the days when the band’s songs were written by Diane Warren, Desmond Child, Bob Halligan jnr, The Martin (Vega) Brothers and other members of the songwriting glitteratti.

On this new album, the cunningly titled Afterlife, Ronnie (Lords Of Black/Rainbow) Romero is now fronting the band, and Frontier’s inhouse producer/writer, Alessandro DelVecchio, has written the material. And, in fairness, the opportunity has allowed him to pay homage to the glory days of the original band, married up to a fast developing maturity in rock composition and production.

This is no poundshop Sunstorm. Together, Romero, DelVecchio and lead guitarist, Simone Mularoni have crafted a surprisingly attractive, Rainbow flavoured approximation. It doesn’t always work, but it’s this notion that pulses loud and proud at the heart of these new songs.

The shifting currents and moods of ‘One Step Closer’ and ‘Stronger’ give these two standouts a melodic heft that separate them from the others. It’s immediately noticeable that Romero has made some modification to his vocals, finding a slighty earthier, soulful pitch than we might expect.

‘Swan Song’ and ‘Far From Over’ have a dark, derivative, Dio-esque Britrock swagger, grounded in solid, bass heavy rhythms. Both spin on Muloroni’s sparkling, sometimes razoring guitar figures, underpinning seriously sinuous melodies.

In fairness, it’s often DelVecchio’s arrangements and production, rather than the writing and performances, that carry the album home. He has developed his original, one-size-fits-all production style into something more adaptive, more sensitive to the needs of the music. But even with this flair and expertise at work, some tracks don’t stick on landing. It’s most obvious on the album’s big ballad, ‘Lost Forever’, where the dynamics of rock vocals are sacrificed by pushing that bit too hard.

That said, Muloroni, DelVecchio and Romero have stepped up with Afterlife. The album unarguably has a solid sonic core, and there’s always something interesting going on at the edges. ***

Album review: JULIAN TAYLOR BAND – Desert Star

Julian Taylor chatted to Pete Feenstra on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, Sunday 28 March, 20:00 GMT including tracks from ‘Desert Star’.

Julian Taylor Band

Aporia Records [Release date 28.05.21]

Julian Taylor Band’s ‘Desert Star’ is the album that refuses to lie down. With release dates in 2015 and 2016, it’s now being re-promoted in the UK and is a stellar album worthy of plenty of reappraisal.

Sometimes you hear an album that simply drags you along in its slipstream and kicks your musical prejudices into touch, to leave you quietly muttering: “but I don’t like that kind of music.”

There’s so much going on that it enchants us both viscerally and cerebrally. It’s rhythmically addictive, lyrically persuasive and is full of celebratory addictive hooks that you might feel like belting out in front of your neighbours.

In many ways you can see why it’s taken Canadian roots rocker Julian Taylor over quarter of a century to achieve overdue success. After all, his amalgam of pop, rock, funk and soul is the perfect example of a musical composite that is too often dependent on the changing fashions of the transient industry he works in.

After a few too many years on the outside looking in,  he’s handily placed to tap into the emergence of a contemporary soul scene which perfectly suits his Toronto influenced Hammond organ and horn driven funk, r&b and soul.

He’s an open minded and versatile singer-songwriter who revels in the resolution of a catchy hook. The 22-song double album perfectly showcases his wide-ranging oeuvre, from his expressive soulful phrasing to some snappy hooks. His band’s intuitive accompaniment on tight arrangements  also gives the album its sense of flow.

It’s an adventurous musical journey built on a commercial imperative, full of crisp dynamics that amplify his soulful song craft.

Such is the stylistic span of this album that the listener frequently gets derailed by the unexpected, but it all makes for an exhilarating musical ride.

One moment he’s a soulful crooner and a heartfelt balladeer on some introspective contemporary r&b, but then he thinks nothing of lifting the roof off with some hard assed funk.

In fact, the joy of the album lies in the way he’s willing to take chances by going where his inner voice takes him.

He’s a musical free spirit with an unashamed commercial bent, much like Prince, Stevie Wonder and John Mayer.

There’s the anthemic rock of ‘House Is A Garden’, the powerhouse ‘Chemical Low’, the essential horn-led single ‘Set Me Free’, the kick ass ‘Never Too Late’ and the ripping guitar driven finale of ‘In My Life’.

The latter is a big rock splurge with special guest Joey Landreth on which Taylor’s animated voice finishes the album in bone crunching fashion.

It’s a remarkable double album which sounds as if his many years of touring were in no way wasted. He calls on both personal and musical experiences to dig deep into his soul (pun intended), for some heartfelt emotion and playful hooks delivered with real fervour.

He further adheres to the good songwriter’s creed of diving into the realm of the senses, with narratives interwoven with lyrical minutiae.

It’s a perfectly balanced album that opens from the snappy, funky single ‘Just A Little Bit’. An incredibly catchy hook comprising electro beats and horns sets the musical template for the album as a whole.

There’s a clever use of word plays too on the very catchy ‘Bobbi Champagne’, a great example of the way he builds a track from a gentle intro into an all encompassing chorus.

There some unexpected rock-riffing on ‘Heard Good Things’, a tension building title track, and the beguiling ‘Take Me (Stay)’, full of sensuous lyrics:

“Take me wherever the starlight goes. Take me wherever a leaf (snow) has fallen. You’re the only one that could make me stay.”

In contrast, there’s the afore mentioned anthemic sweep of ‘House Is A Garden’ and the jaunty uplifting arrangement of the politically charged ‘Get Loud Pt 11’.

He’s unashamedly commercial on both the electro handclaps and contemporary r&b feel of ‘Pick You Up’, while he dips into West Coast soul on the lascivious ‘Hot Heels’, with a sludgy pulse and faux falsetto.

He also strips things down on the acoustic ‘Glass House’, which perfectly distils his melodic simplicity with pristine diction and uplifting phrasing.

‘Desert Star’ is a groundbreaking, broad-based and coherent journey full of contrasting musical highlights.

Above all, it’s an album that captures the musical moment and should put Julian Taylor squarely in the forefront of contemporary roots rock. *****

Book review: On track…LEVEL 42, AIMEE MANN (Every Album, Every Song)

On track...LEVEL 42 (Every Album, Every Song)

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 01.04.21]

Level 42 were very much a band of the eighties – the decade of their greatest success – and  submerged their early brand of jazz rock fusion in a highly accessible blend of pop funk.  With big label backing the band had a succession of hit singles and big live shows.

Their early albums were defined by a fusion of rock, funk and pop and by the time of their official debut release on Polydor in 1982 they were at the vanguard of so-called Brit Funk, influenced by some of the US heavyweights such as Stanley Clarke and Herbie Hancock.

Level 42′s USP was Mark King, originally a drummer before switching to bass.  He provided the band’s propulsive and distinctive heartbeat, whilst Mark Lindop on keyboards possessed a distinctive falsetto.

Matt Phillips traces the band’s history via the individual members including the Gould brothers – Phil and Boon – and not forgetting the “fifth” band member during their heyday (and later) Wally Badarou.  A bit like Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff did for Stevie Wonder, Badarou was a synthesiser wizard providing production and playing skills although he never appeared with them on stage.

During the band’s history they have also been graced by several significant musicians, including Allan Holdsworth (on the album Guaranteed in 1991), Gary Husband and Jakko Jaksyk.

Since the 1990s the band have continued to tour with the occasional new release and before the pandemic were poised to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

This book is enhanced by contributions from both Mark King and Lindup whilst Phillips also provides a musician’s insight to the track by track breakdown.  A worthy and welcome re-assessment.  ****

Mark King interview/feature

Singer songwriter Aimee Mann may seem a rather niche subject for a  track by track breakdown.  Some will recall she originally fronted the pop rock band ‘Til Tuesday before a solo career beckoned in the early 1990s.

As Jez Rowden states in his preamble his interpretation of the songs is personal and may not even agree with that of the artist.  He might also be at variance with the reader, but then that is the frequently highly subjective nature of this series.

With a plundering of available references this is at least an attempt to piece together Mann’s story in the absence of any other printed biography.  This should appeal to Mann fans as much as those discovering the artist for the first time.  ***

Interview: Dolf de Borst of the Datsuns

The Datsuns new album, ‘Eye To Eye’ – their first since 2014 – is released on May 28 and the band’s new single, ‘Suspicion’ is out now. GRTR! recently caught up with vocalist/bassist Dolf de Borst to discuss the upcoming album and how the band have been coping during the lockdowns…

1. Brain to Brain is your first new music in 7 years, what have you been doing during this ‘time off’? A comeback during a pandemic seems like unusual timing?

Ha! I guess it’s new to everyone else but Brain to Brain has been around a while. It was the first song we wrote for the new album back in 2016 and we played it live on our last New Zealand tour too. The album has been finished for well over a year now and we finally got sick of sitting on it, so it’s coming out, pandemic or not. It’s art?! It needs to be out of our heads and released into the wild.

2. Is the material on the forthcoming album, old, new or a mixture of both, and what are the themes?

All the material was originally conceived back in 2016 but then slowly refined over time. We are living in three different countries so the logistics of it all can kinda slow things to a crawl sometimes. Thematically it touches on our inner demons, human evolution, cynicism and post-truth logic.

That all sounds heavy and pretentious but it’s just a simple rock record. Turn it up!

3. I’ve read about the making of the video, and how this was creatively worked around band members being apart during the pandemic, how has the pandemic impacted you – both personally and professionally?

Personally, it’s been a bit tougher, more psychological pressure, more time to hear those internal monologues and doubts speaking.

Professionally? Well, I haven’t played any shows in 12 months or so, so that tends to hurt financially. That said, I don’t really wanna gripe about it too much because I live in a good situation compared to some. We’ll be fine, I think…

4. What bands do you enjoy listening to? We appreciate any band, book or film recommendations you may want to share, to finish up our lockdown!

The Lemon Twigs – “Songs For The General Public” LP

Reigning Sound – “A Little More Time” Single

Ursula K, Le Guin – “The Dispossessed” Book

5. NME called you The Heroes of the New Rock Revolution back in 2002, 19 years later – what keeps the fire in your belly?

Not much has changed in our motivations, it’s maybe evolved a little? I try to listen to and experience new shit that makes me excited and wanna go and make new things too. To create and have that buzz around your brain when something fits together in a fun or new way.

I live for that. Sure, there’s a danger in getting too comfortable or worse cynical and sneering about art, especially as you age.
That can be pretty destructive I guess. But you always wanna express yourself right? At least I do.

6. Any message for your fans in the UK/Europe?

It is my sincere wish to be back playing shows, I really miss the immediate and visceral thrill of it all, and as soon as possible we will.

We just need to hold on a little longer!

Quick plays: CITIZEN, NAD SYLVAN, ESCAPE

Citizen - Life In Your Glass World

CITIZEN Life In Your Glass World Run For Cover Records [Release date 26.03.21]

Formed in 2009, Citizen – vocalist Mat Kerekes, guitarist Nick Hamm, and bassist Eric Hamm – return after almost 4 years away with their new album, ‘Life In Your Glass World’. The reaction to news of the album gained over 14,000 likes on Instagram and 1,300 Retweets in the first day alone.

The band say they wanted the record to feel like an exorcism of pent-up negative feelings, something even more prevalent in the world currently.

Citizen hit the mark when they show their alt pop side like on ‘Blue Sunday’ or the dance beat driven ‘Fight Beat’. ‘Winter Buds’ is another fine tune, slow and introspective. A tune perfect for that mid-set comedown.

Their fans will welcome their return as already witnessed on the reaction on social media. Also there are a few stand outs on here for the casual listener to get into. ***

NAD SYLVAN Spiritus Mundi

NAD SYLVAN Spiritus Mundi Inside Out [Release date 09.04.21]

After concluding work on a series of solo albums known as the Vampirate trilogy, Nad Sylvan’s latest album is based on the poems of WB Yeats, setting the poems to music and adpating the featured poems themes.

The album sees him collaborating extensively again with Andrew Laitres who worked on Nad’s 2019 album, ‘The Regal Bastard’.

Marking a shift from previous outings, the album focuses primarily on the lyrics and vocals, which are accompanied by orchestrations. There are still a series of top names from the progressive music world including Tony Levin, Jonas Reingold, Mirkko DeMaio (The Flower Kings), and Steve Hackett.

The lead single ‘The Second Coming’ is a good indicator of the lyrics and vocals taking the spotlight, as is the beautiful vocal arrangements on ‘The Hawk’. The latter possibly a strong contender for a future single release.

‘The Witch and the Mermaid’ and ‘The Fisherman’ both have folk elements, again marking a shift away from the sound on previous albums.

An album that will grow after repeated plays, from an artist who does live up to the prog tag, in that he pushes himself musically and lyrically on each album he makes. ***1/2

ESCAPE Fire In The Sky

ESCAPE Fire In The Sky AOR Heaven [Release date 30.04.21]

UK AOR/melodic rock band Escape are back with their third studio album, after a lengthy break. All of the tracks on the album are taken from previous Vince O’Regan (Bob Catley, Legion, Arabia) releases, however, all of these songs have been reworked and refreshed.

The Escape line-up is also new, bar founding member Vince O’Regan, who is joined by Graham Beales (vocals) Irvin Parratt (keyboards, vocals), Pete Betts (bass, vocals) and Bob Pears (drums). Parratt has worked with O’Regan previously in Legion, Arabia and as part of Bob Catley’s band. Indeed, all of the band form part of a Magnum tribute band, Storyteller’s Night, something that comes through on the music, especially a song like ‘Restless Heart’ with its distinctive Magnum feel.

The epic ‘Fire In The Sky’ does slightly outstay its welcome, which is a shame as the first half of the song is very strong – acoustic guitars, gentle keys/rhythm and an emphasis on the vocals. The extended guitar soloing on the second half distracts from the song’s overall appeal.

Two tracks on this album are from Bob Catley’s 2006 solo album ‘Spirit Of Man’ album. They are ‘Blinded By A Lie’ and ‘Walk On Water’, both of which still sound good all these years later. Graham Beales would make a good stand in for Bob Catley should he ever fancy a night off Magnum!

Nicely played and produced, just lacks those killer songs to make it a ‘must listen/have’. Still, be interesting to see how this line-up develops once they start to write their own songs together. ***

Album review: THE ALMIGHTY – Welcome To Defiance (7 CD Boxset)

HNE / Cherry Red Records [release date 26.03.21]

Glasgow band, The Almighty, was formed in 1988 and revolved around Ricky Warwick on guitar and vocals. (He now does the same job for the Black Star Riders.)
Such was the band’s initial impact, they were signed up by Polydor a year later.
After five years and three hard rock albums, they moved to Chrysalis.
That’s where this mammoth, 7 CD boxset begins.

1994: CD1 : Crank was a hulking bruiser of an album. A significant sideways shift into the rough and tumble punk rock of their youth, informed by the heavy metal basics of their previous albums. It got a good critical and public response. Two tracks were released as singles, ‘Wrench’ and ‘Jonestown Mind’ both sailed up the UK charts into the Top 40. This at a time when Take That and Wet Wet Wet were selling in the millions. The album peaked at no 15 in the UK album charts.

1996: CD2 : The follow up, Just Add Life was released by indie label, Castle, after Chysalis turned it down.
By the mid nineties, the dark underbelly of UK hard rock had been hollowed out and replaced with Ska, punk and alternative metal musings. The Almighty embraced change, and their mashup’s highpoints … the big brass meets The Clash on ‘All Sussed Out’ and ‘Do You Understand’, both rippling with punkified energy… worked surprisingly well. Well enough to push the singles into the UK charts once again. Producer, Chris Sheldon made sure there was plenty bottom end, thickening out the punk stylings on a bedrock of pounding heavy metal. For some though, the album proved an experiment in sound too far.

2000: CD3: The Almighty : some inevitable line up changes – ex Whatever guitarist Nick Parsons replaced ex Alice Cooper sideman, Pete Friesen, who had joined the band for the Just Add Life album. Parsons was an accomplished songwriter, contributing some cracking tracks. His ‘Broken Machine’ and ‘TNT’ are probably the album’s standout cuts. But otherwise, they entered the 21st century rather unconvincingly, dragging their ten year old reputation behind them. They were a band with a past who once had a future, which now looked uncertain.

2001: CD4: Psycho-Narco came hard on The Almighty’s heels, as if to say, oops, sorry ’bout that, this is the real us.
The real us turned out be much like the old us, regurgitating sounds and songs from the past, disguised as new product. But it’s new product delivered in an upbeat manner, with the occasional jolt of pop optimism grabbing our attention. ‘Galvanise’ and ‘Blow Out Kit’ are designed using a singles’ template, and tempted new fans into the fold.
But it was the band’s last studio album.

CDs 5,6 and 7 are where the real treasure is.
The band had two real strengths. One, they were dynamite live and two, they knew how to pack the visceral energy of their music into an accessible single.

1995 : CD5 : Crank And Deceit, Live In Japan was recorded on tour in Osaka on the back of Crank the album, and the hit singles, ‘Wrench’ and ‘Jonestown Mind’.
This was a band truly at the top of their game. The elemental drive of ‘Addiction’, ‘Crucify’ and ‘Ultraviolent’ energises the audience, whose response becomes more frenzied as the gig wears on. It significantly pushed up sales of the studio album and created great demand for the live version. It was the highpoint of the band’s career and they fully capitalised on it.

CD 6 and CD 7 : Live B-Sides, Session stuff and Remixes – treasures troves of “not quite” arcana, are spread across these two discs.
The band toured the Crank album through Europe in ’95 and recorded many of the gigs, primarily the Stuttgart concert, and subsequently used these live tracks as the B-sides on single releases. These have been compiled on CD7. Essentially, each track is a stopping point on the band’s European tour of the album. An historical document with music, if you like.

The band and label/s always showed real marketing nous. They ensured the single releases provided genuine value. Thus many singles came with exclusive bonus tracks. These are compiled on CD6, like the amusingly titled non album tracks, ‘Desperately Seeking Something’ and ‘Tense Nervous Headshake’, as well as the “Therapy remix” and the “Ruts remix” versions of ‘Jonestown Mind’.
The collection also includes a couple of clues, if any were needed, as to where the band got their influences, by featuring battle hardened versions of pub rockers’ Eddie And the Hot Rods’ ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’, and a blazing cover of hardcore punk band, GBH’s ‘Give Me Fire’.

The band split up in 2002, and have reformed temporarily to play some well received live gigs a few times since.
This collection serves them well. ***

Album review: THE BAND – Stage Fright (50th Anniversary Edition)

THE BAND – Stage Fright

Capitol / UMG [Release date 12.2.21]

Often regarded as a poor relation to The Band’s peerless first two albums, this 2CD anniversary edition of “Stage Fright” (overseen by Robbie Robertson) invites fresh appraisal with a new mix and revised running order.

Recorded over a period of 12 days in the Woodstock Playhouse, it’s always been a sonically impressive album due to the natural sound of that wooden, barrel-shaped building. Originally mixed by Glyn Johns and Todd Rundgren without any band member involvement, Bob Clearmountain has given it a sonic lift by newly mixing the tapes for this edition.

The song order that was originally intended has also been restored, resulting in the stronger material being sequenced towards the start of the album. This works effectively, and ‘Sleeping’ actually sounds like the natural album closer.

Several numbers here would go on to become regulars in the live set, notably ‘The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show’, ‘The Shape I’m In’ and ‘Stage Fright’. Indeed, all three are present on CD2 which contains 20 (largely unreleased) songs recorded live on 4-track tape at The Band’s Royal Albert Hall concert in June 1971. One of the greatest concerts that they ever played, as well as promoting the “Stage Fright” material it also contains classic tracks such as ‘The Weight’, ‘King Harvest (Has Surely Come)’, ‘I Shall Be Released’, ‘Up On Cripple Creek’, ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’, ‘Across The Great Divide’ and ‘Rag Mama Rag’ – a truly staggering performance full of incredible musicianship.

As well as the aforementioned tracks, other highlights on the album itself include ‘Time To Kill’, ‘Daniel And The Sacred Harp’ and ‘The Rumor’. The latter boasts a memorable vocal exchange between Rick Danko, Levon Helm and Richard Manuel.

In addition to “Stage Fright’, the first CD also contains a couple of alternate mixes along with 7 songs captured on a portable cassette player in a hotel room in Calgary in 1970. These feature Robertson on guitar and vocals, Danko harmonizing and playing rhythm, and Manuel joining in on harmonica and vocals. Rough outtakes they may be, but they still make for a magical listen.

The accompanying booklet features detailed notes, including a 1970 Robert Hilburn piece originally published in the Los Angeles Times, as well as some outstanding photos.

This sterling release is a perfect way to either rediscover “Stage Fright” or enjoy it for the first time. A very underrated album, and one that certainly merits a 50th anniversary celebration. ****

Album review: METALITE – A Virtual World

AFM Records [release date 26.03.21]

Coming soon to a Melodic Metal dancefloor near you, Metalite and their third album, A Virtual World.

Afficionados will already know the band incorporate elements of trance and electronica into their streamlined melodic metal variant. The New Wave of Scandi Melodic Metal.

Produced by the ubiquitous Jacob Hansen, the band is tight as the proverbial drum, collusive almost, powerfully pumping out their sleek, fluid dancefloor fillers, full of slick rhythmic structures and infectious tunes, on track after track.

Mostly, it’s impossible to pin down. There are distant echoes on ‘Cloud Connected’ of Stuart Price’s work with Madonna on her ‘Confessions…’ album, and you’ll not get dancier or more in the moment than that.

At most other times, it’s grandiose pomprock, rubbing shoulders with Amaranthe and Within Temptation, but with no ideas above its station. It has a concept – mankind’s growing dependence on technology – one that’s reasonably down to earth, if overused.

Energetic, dramatic, standout tracks like ‘Beyond The Horizon’ and ‘Alone’ put a fresh spin on well explored sounds, adding a more contemporary edge to a well established stylistic template.

These tracks seem to go from a standing start to a breathless, headlong rush in a second. Along with a couple of other highpoints, like ‘Talisman’ and the title track itself, ‘A Virtual World’, they are never OTT, but are laced with heartlifting melodies delivered with a kind of tempered grandeur by vocalist, Erica Ohlsson, that when done right, makes a genuine emotional connection.

Elswhere, the album is built around those same principles. Majestic melodies and cascading choruses, all dance to the pulsating beats and shine in the flashing lights of your uptown, urban nightspot.

Except…the fabulously melodic last track ‘Synchronised’. This one cuts against the grain of the preceding material. It slows the pace (relatively speaking). Lyrically, it has a little more depth, as it accepts some hard truths about mankind and the progress of technology. Doesn’t stop it from having a massive chorus of course, and even given it’s the closer it’ll linger in your mind long after the other songs have faded.  ***1/2

Album review: SECRET SPHERE – Lifeblood

Frontiers Records [Release date 12.03.21]

If Italy’s Secret Sphere aren’t the EU’s Power Metal poster boys, then they should be.

They are a relatively unsung band who’ve battled through multiple line up changes, and come up smelling of roses every time. Guided from the beginning by guitarist, songwriter, producer, Aldo Lenobile, the band has released ten albums in twenty years, with the latest, Lifeblood, celebrating the return of original vocalist, Robert Messina.

Many symphonic/prog/power metal bands favour the instrumental opener. Generally its purpose is to blur the boundary between classical and rock/metal. ‘Shaping Reality’ is the perfect example. It’s dramatic. It’s operatic. it’s cinematic. It’s enlivened by a brief but exciting passage of scenic cantata, framed by a dramatic string section.
It’s a great start from a band whose consistency and quality has never been in doubt, but not always acknowledged by the music press.

Then it’s business as usual, as the thundering hooves of a galloping rhythm section speeds over the Power/Prog Metal horizon to deliver the title track, ‘Lifeblood’.
The repetitive elements of Lenobile’s songs – the constantly recurring musical themes – add an hypnotic element to the music and provide cohesion. And in fact most of the tracks hang on a particular guitar and/or orchestral motif, expanded and embellished, twisted and turned into a full length song.

Even in the fast and furious power metal moments of ‘Alive’ and ‘Solitary Flight’, as much as in the Prog Metal variations of ‘The Lie We Love’ and ‘Against All Odds’, each movement merges fluidly with the last and the next. Messina’s voice swoops and soars and Lenobile’s axework, quick and agile, briefly zooms into orbit.

Sometimes things happen so fast you miss the transitions, a bit of magic. From the full blown symphonic orchestration of ‘End Of An Ego’, to the surging operatic undertow of ‘Life Survivors’, it’s clear that Lenobile has abandoned the limiting structures of heavy metal convention. No chapter and verse, bridge, chorus rules need apply here.
A breath of fresh air. ***1/2

Album review: JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 – Running Games

JOEL HOEKSTRA’S 13 – Running Games

Frontiers [Release date 12.02.21]

Joel Hoekstra, best known as the current guitarist for Whitesnake and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (and previously as a member of Night Ranger and the Broadway show Rock of Ages), returns with album number two from his solo project, Joel Hoekstra’s 13.

Joel Hoekstra once again handles the bulk of the production, songwriting and music. However, unlike the debut album which featured a number of guest vocalists this time Symphony X’s Russell Allen is the sole singer, with Jeff Scott Soto helping out on backing vocals (he did sing lead on some of the debut album’s songs). Rounding out the line-up are Tony Franklin (bass), Vinny Appice (drums) and Derek Sherinian (keyboards).

With such a stellar line-up and a decent debut album from 13, expectations are rightly set high. Hoekstra and his fellow musicians deliver, with plenty of fine vocal performances from Russell Allen as you’d expect, notably on the showstopper that is ‘How Do You’. Also Derek Sherinian lets loose on a few snazzy keyboard solos throughout the course of the album.

Joel Hoekstra’s time in Whitesnake shows on ‘Heart Attack’, a song you could imagine David Coverdale enjoying singing. ‘Lonely Days’ is one of those floor filling anthems, with a great riff and instant chorus (strengthened by Jeff Scott Soto’s vocal input).

There are a couple of fillers like ‘Fantasy’ which is melodic hard rock by numbers, but even this one is no clunker thanks to the vocals of Russell Allen.

The title track is thoughtfully positioned at the end of the album as it is unlike the rest of the album. An acoustic number with nimble acoustic playing by Hoekstra, also featuring the legendary Lenny Castro on percussion, it is a real surprise and makes for a rewarding end to the album.

The good thing about Joel Hoekstra’s writing is that he focuses on the melody. For sure there are plenty of guitar solos scattered throughout the album, but never OTT or there for the sake of it.

It was 2015 when the debut album from this project came out and let’s hope we don’t have to wait another six years for album number three! Classy melodic hard rock, nothing more, nothing less. ***1/2

Album review: CLIVE MITTEN – Suite Cryptique: Recomposing Twelfth Night 1978-1983

CLIVE MITTEN - Suite Cryptique: Recomposing Twelfth Night 1978-1983

Bumnote Records/Twelfth Night Records [Release date 02.04.21]

I have to say the band Twelfth Night have completely passed me by.  I’ve known vaguely their name but never really investigated their music, that is until the arrival of a new double-CD from founder member Clive Mitten.

The band have their origins in that dawn of so-called neo-progressive rock in the 1980s along with bands such as Pendragon, Pallas and Jadis.

They can perhaps best be termed a collective with band members changing regularly over the years although retaining the core of guitarist Andy Revell and Brian Devoil on drums.  Some gaps in the history when the band went on hiatus have not helped continuity or consistency either.  Mitten left the band in  early 1987.

The band’s first major landmark was an appearance at the Reading Festival in August 1983 but a major label signing eluded them until 1986 and that didn’t last long.

More recently the band have reformed with Mitten and Andy Sears (vocals, guitar) but to complicate things the core members called themselves The Cryptic Clues.

‘Suite Cryptique’ follows this later incarnation if only in titling.  Clive Mitten has used Lockdown to revisit some of the earlier pieces in a classical style.  There are reworkings of ‘Live At The Target’ (originally released in 1981), Fact And Fiction (1982) and Live (And Let Live) (1984) and the two key pieces ‘The Collector’ (1983) and Creepshow (1983).

As Mitten says, this is not a covers album but more a re-imagining.  As a Twelfth Night novice I can’t comment on how these arrangements differ from the originals but I can approach it as many will: an orchestral album that stands on its own merits.

And for both the uninitiated and the converted he provides illuminating liner notes on his approach, even if out of sequence.  For the former, it might have been better to have separated out the various song constituents on the actual CD (and reflected in the track listing) whilst still maintaining the pieces’ continuity.

No real orchestra players were harmed in the making of this epic production, and it is a real credit to Mitten and his strings and “gin consultant” Jane Mann (widow of early Twelfth Night vocalist Geoff Mann whose painting adorns the cover) that he achieves a very natural soundscape.

The overall effect is very tuneful and stirring in equal measures and widescreen in execution.  In fact at times the depth and feel harks back to that very English of composers Vaughan Williams, although Mitten is actually influenced by modern classicists as much as the Bachs and the Beethovens.  But be prepared for surprises; there’s a touch of Lalo Schifrin in the piece ‘Live (and Let Live)’ which ultimately emerges as the lost soundtrack to some Hollywood spy movie.

I am sure, as with many of these projects, it will have punters looking up the website and finding out more about this band through the ages.  And the website also gives access to a rich heritage of live and studio material, from the earliest days.  Another excuse to unload that pent up Lockdown cash, but only after a quite wonderful two-hour listen.  *****

Album review: NICK WATERHOUSE – Promenade Blue

NICK WATERHOUSE – Promenade Blue

Bandcamp [Release date 09.04.21]

Nick Waterhouse has been making music since the early 2000’s, playing a mix of rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll. His new album sees him working alongside producer Paul Butler (the Bees, Michael Kiwanuka, the Young Folk).

A Spector Wall of Sound on ‘Place Names’ starts the album off. The female backing vocals, crisp drum, swirling strings, all combine together to make this a strong opening salvo off the album.

‘The Spanish Look’ is a swinger with do-wop, r & b and soul – this song packs it all in. If Quentin Tarantino ever remakes ‘Pulp Fiction’ this should be on the soundtrack.

The organ and tight drumbeat on ‘Pushing Too Hard’ work well together. Listen out for the cheeky Kinks riff on the organ too.

Touch of jazz on the instrumental ‘Promene Blue’, with its subtle guitar and piano interplay. Never thought this particular reviewer would be raving about jazz! ‘Fugitive Lover’ has a deep bass vocal leading off each verse. Very 50’s in sound, the added brass flourishes add even more to the overall sound.

Nick Waterhouse is an artist born out of time (and gains kudos for sharing the same birthday as me!) as back in the late 50’s/early 60’s he’d have been a regular on the charts. Nevertheless, this is a fine album steeped in the classic rock n roll, r ‘n’ b and soul sounds of that era, with a modern shine.

A real time capsule of a record, enjoyable from start to finish. Marvellous stuff. ****

Album review: SPIRIT – Son Of America (3CD reissue/remaster)

SPIRIT - Son Of America

Cherry Red Records [Release date 26.03.21]

Californian band, Spirit, blossomed in the fertile fields of psychedelic rock. A year after forming in 1967, the year of “The Summer Of Love”, they released their self titled debut, on Ode Records (now part of Sony Music).

Its febrile mix of rock, jazz and psychedelia struck a chord with many. It was a commercial success, taking up a 6 month residency on the USA’s Billboard album charts. They went on to release more than a dozen best selling studio albums through the 70s and 80s.

50+ years after that debut, the UK’s Cherry Red Records have added this Spirit 3 CD package to their fast expanding catalogue of carefully curated and keenly remastered reissues.
Originally released in 2005 as a 2 CD set of demos, outtakes, unreleased tracks and instrumentals, it has now been supplemented by a third CD – a previously unreleased live performance on a Californian radio station – recorded in the early nineties. All 3 cds have been newly remastered.

And so this set’s 60 tracks provide glimpses of a time and a place, and colourfully illustrate the the imagination and adventure that was prevalent in popular music as it moved out of the sixties into the seventies and eighties.

It’s an immersive experience. Vocalist, Jay Ferguson, guitarist Randy California, Bassist Mark Andes and keyboard player, John Locke were the perfect blend of musicians and innovators.

The title track is the primer. ‘Son Of America’ is the story of the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a young man, just drafted. Instrumentals, skillfully assembled from musical fragments, like ‘In The Dark’, are interlaced with the words of politicians, in this case John F Kennedy.

There’s plenty of fully formed songs too, like the short but electrifying ‘Storm In The Night’, and the Country Rocking ‘Gopal’, which takes inspiration from eastern religions and music – this was how western sixties’ youth challenged the dominant cultures and norms of the time.

There’s also a rock version of Dylan’s ‘Times They Are A Changin’, but it doesn’t quite work.

All that said, Disc 3 is the prize here.

Captured live by KPFK Rock Radio in LA, the band cooly perform a sometimes slightly ramshackle set, thanks to station’s amusingly primitive live sound system.

But the music sounds great: A fabulous live version of ‘Nature’s Way’ – an environmental protest song written by California, which never made it into the charts, but became a seventies’ rock anthem.

A funkier-than-the-album version of Mr Skin, and some of the best individualist pop and rock of the times: from the one that started it all, ‘Fresh Garbage’ – exotic, but otherwise impossible to decribe rock, up there with the best from The Doors and Zappa, (in his more accessible moments).

To the catchy pop immediacy of ‘Animal Zoo’ and ’1984′, to the sweaty, swaggering ‘I Got A Line You’, the first hit from their second album ,which saw them move off in a harder rocking direction. Clearly, a durable, consistently inventive rock band.

Of the remastering across the 3 discs, this one is the most striking. Something of cliché perhaps, but you really feel you’re in the studio with these guys, enjoying it all first hand.

Where are they now?

Randy California died from drowning in 1996. RIP.  John Locke died of cancer in 2006. RIP.  Jay Ferguson is writing soundtracks for popular TV series like NCIS.

Mark Andes has reformed country rock band Firefall, which he started up in the eighties with Michael (The Byrds) Clarke and Rick (Flying Burrito Brothers) Roberts.

The material that accompanies this compilation is better than having a bunch of bonus tracks. Written by the band’s archivist, Mick Skidmore, it’s almost as much of an entertainment as the music. What he doesn’t know about the band isn’t worth knowing. ****

Album review: KINGS OF THE QUARTER MILE – Whatever It Takes Is What I’ve Got

Pete Feenstra chatted to Pete Juzl guitarist of Kings Of The Quarter Mile for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 21 March 2021.

Kings Of The Quarter Mile - Whatever It Takes I've Got

Retroflector Records [Release date 29.01.21]

Kings Of The Quarter Mile hail from Worcester in the UK. It’s a point worth emphasizing, as they play psychedelic tinged roots rock into Americana with a tip of the hat to the mid-80’s Paisley Underground sound, (think psychedelic tinged jangling guitars and lyrics shot through with a hint of British grit).

It’s an album built on strong songs with evocative narratives, inspired playing and a meticulous attention to detail, from the layered sound to nuanced harmonies.

The band is clearly the sum of its parts, with a focused attention to musical detail that splendidly mirrors their lyrical depth.

They tap into an Americana aesthetic from the name of the band itself – which sparks drag racing imagery – through the album art work by guitarist Pete Juzl, to the music itself.

They interweave jangling guitars, piano and organ to evoke a West Coast psychedelic feel. The narratives frequently set a scene which the band then colour with exhilarating interplay and inspired solos.

Seasoned listeners might spot an array of influences, but it’s the way the band moulds them to their own ends to create a sense of flow that consistently impresses.

And if the marketing of contemporary music has veered towards one track downloads, this album offers the best of both words, being the coherent sum of its parts, while also producing several catchy songs that have thus far generated 3 singles.

They open with a significant tremolo sound before slipping into in some nifty Knopfler style picking on the Steve Counsell penned ‘The Lie’.

The reflective lyrics set the tone for the album as a whole: “Back in the day, when he could say that world was his to own. When the land was green and the rivers flowed, then a man could reap what he had sown.”

And they update that with the sting in the tale: They tell us global warming is a lie.”

It’s the perfect opener that plays to their strengths of an undulating melody, great harmonies with Jenny Curtis’ intuitive bv’s and Simon moth’s uplifting piano.

Much like the Counsell penned ‘Cross The Line’, with its big country feel, it’s the Long Ryders recycled, but with impeccable songs.

You will be hard pushed to differentiate between the 6 Counsell and 4 Juzl penned songs.  They are stylistically different, but still carry the band’s essential DNA which lives and breathes the Americana genre.

Refreshingly, they wisely eschew the worst Nashville elements of sentimentality and cliché.

The lyrics on ‘The Ticket’ for example, paint an evocative picture that would be the perfect catalyst for a video, sparked by some wonderful wah wah and a contrasting clean-toned solo over a nuanced organ sweep:  “The situation tripped you, life slips by so fast, and she looks up to the sky, the rain washed clean the past.”

There’s also a wistful feel and lightness of touch that amplifies the band oeuvre perfectly.

‘Louisa’ digs deeper into songcraft, on a dark theme cushioned by jangling guitars and organ, while ‘Bluebird’ is a contemporised form of Soulful that wouldn’t be out of place on a Monophonics album.

Predicated on a sludgy stuttering rhythm and heartfelt vocal, it flows into the radio friendly hook, complete with Ernie Isley style phased guitar inflections.

‘Whatever It Takes Is What I’ve Got’ lives up to its defiant title, and makes the most of an excellently sequenced album that thrives on contrast.

It’s all glued together by magically interwoven guitar parts and a perfect rhythm section of bassist Brian Richards and drummer Dave Smaylen who lock into the grooves, while Simon Moth switches from piano to organ to bring a richer colour to the album.

They slip into a wonderful dreamy groove on ‘Drunk’, the keyboard part of which would surely make Steve Miller smile, while the extended ‘Soldier Girl’ could be Buffalo Springfield  and more specifically Neil Young.

They are more concise on the catchy ‘Springsteen’, their latest single, which is another snapshot of what they do so well.

‘Whatever It Takes Is What I’ve Got’ strikes the perfect balance between its painstaking creation and sounding fresh and organic enough to capture a ‘live in the studio spark’.

It’s an album that doesn’t so much pay homage to an era gone by, as draw on the past to spark new songs with real substance. The wholesome melodies and good hooks are fashioned by a ‘can-do-spirit’ that will surely take them a long way.  ****

Album review: SAXON – Inspirations

SAXON - Inspirations

Silver Lining [Release date 19.03.21]

Four decades into a career that has seen them conquer the globe, there seems to be no stopping the mighty Saxon, their own brand of Heavy Metal Thunder still ringing out loud and proud. Whilst not known for their love songs, ‘Inspirations’ is, in its own way, just that. A genuine work of passion, paying tribute to the artists that inspired them both as a band and as individuals, this is that most divisive of things, a covers album, done in such a way that brings their own feel to some of the classics of the past.

The band obviously had a huge amount of fun choosing and recording these eleven slices of history, dipping into some of the more obviously influential bands whilst mixing in a scattering of slightly unexpected artists.

That though is part of the great charm of the project in this age of ‘what would it sound like if a Black Sabbath song was sung by…’ videos on YouTube as here you actually get to hear that for real. It’s a bold move to take on some of the greatest tracks of all time but Saxon have never shied away from a challenge and the album is proof positive of that.

Considering the strength of the rest of the album, The Stones ‘Paint It Black’ was a bit of a leftfield choice to kick off the album as, whilst good, it doesn’t really hit the right spot, some of the sparkle you could have hoped for missing.

Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’ is much safer territory, the band rising to the challenge of this epic, the drama and danger fully intact. Equally impressive, their take on The Beatles ‘Paperback Writer’ is a revelation, still retaining the urgency of the original but adding an extra weight, the juxtaposition of the Fab Four’s pop perfection with ferocious and unrelenting guitars working perfectly.

There follows a slew of tracks that capture the very essence of what has become ‘Heavy Metal’, from genre defining moments of history from Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple to the earliest morphing of psychodelia into much heavier fare as illustrated by the incredible inventiveness of Hendrix.

The full blooded ‘Speed King’, and ‘The Rocker’, along with their take on AC/DC’s raw ‘Problem Child’ show Biff and the band really tearing into things like their very lives depended on it and it’s impossible not to appreciate the craft of both the originals and the covers here. Making a standard your own is one of the trickiest of feats but Saxon manage that balance perfectly.

A highlight of the album comes in the form of ‘Bomber’, the spirit of Lemmy an ever-present feature in the band’s lifetime and one that runs through this visceral piece of rock ‘n’ roll history.

The personal connection Saxon had with the Motorhead main man bringing an added poignancy and determination to make this something special, it blazes with uncontrolled power, the playing of Nibbs Carter and Nigel Glockler pushing it ever onwards with the force of the titular aircraft.

The twin guitars of Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt make their presence felt too, recapturing the Campbell / Wurzel era of the band as they add their own sense of harmony to the titanic riffs as Biff pours his all into this tribute to his fallen friend.

The band aren’t afraid to push the envelope a little too, their version of Toto’s ‘Hold The Line’ adding the grit that we all hoped to hear and closing with The Kinks ‘See My Friends’ was a bold moving, the album ending on a slightly more thoughtful note than the heavy-duty mayhem that came before.

Overall, it’s a fine and interesting diversion from their main catalogue, hitting all the right notes whilst occasionally slipping into missteps that don’t detract from the whole too much.

It may well split opinion but it’s best to take it on face value, putting it on as something that’s a party from start to finish. Nothing earth shattering here but after more than forty years together, it’s great to see Saxon still loving music that is part of our shared DNA. Tributes don’t get much more honest, heartfelt and joyous than this. ****

EP review: MEMORY OF A MELODY – Burn Alive

MEMORY OF A MELODY – Burn Alive

Website [Release date 13.03.20]

Memory of a Melody hail from San Antonio, Texas and prior to this EP have released three albums – 2011’s ‘Things That Make You Scream’, 2012’s ‘Mouthful of Razors’, and 2013’s ‘Phantom’s and Shadows’. After that the band had a break until they found their musical mojo again and recorded this three song EP last year.

The one band Memory of a Melody remind me most of are Nickelback, mainly in the vocals, especially on ‘Rise Up’, a song the aforementioned Nickelback would have loved to have penned I am sure.

On ‘Mary Go Round’ in amongst the metal riffs, their time changes remind the listener of System Of A Down. Its nu metal Jim but not as we know it…

‘Burn Alive’ has recently been released as a single and again the metal riffs and melody leave a lasting impression on the listener.

Impressive stuff from Memory Of A Melody. Melodic, yet subtly aggressive. Hopefully now they are back in the saddle again they will be keen to record more music. ****

EP review: SILVER NIGHTMARES – The Wandering Angel

SILVER NIGHTMARES – The Wandering Angel

Bandcamp [Release date 31.03.20]

Silver Nightmares were formed in Palermo in 2018 by bassist Gabriele Esposito, drummer Alessio Maddaloni, keyboardist Gabriele Taormina with guitarist Mimmo Garofalo joining shortly after. They wrote, composed and orchestrated this, their first EP, which features guest appearances by vocalists Simone Bonomo and Michele Vitrano, guitarist Tody Nuzzo, flutist Giulio Maddaloni and trumpeter Davide Severino.

‘David The King’ and ‘Light Years Away’ see keyboardist Gabriele Taormina unleash some tasty 70s prog keys. Both songs recall past bands like Kansas and Styx, yet have a modern progressive metal slant. The title track is the stand out song on the EP, utilising the band’s harmony vocals to good effect. You get a radio edit version of the song too, so good value with six songs on the EP.

How can you not like an instrumental based on the classic cartoon character ‘D.D. (Dick Dastardly)’ from Whacky Races? A chance for the band to flex their undoubted musical talents and a great fun to listen to.

I am still not overly struck by the vocals on ‘Dame Nature’, however overall this is a recommended EP for those who like prog/melodic metal with a touch of 70’s prog rock.

Silver Nightmares are currently recording their first full album which will be worth a listen when it is released, until then grab a copy of this EP. ***1/2

Album review: KATATONIA – Dead Air

KATATONIA - Dead Air

Peaceville [Release date: 13.11.20]

First of all a confession: I did not join the Katatonia train until they de-coupled themselves from their black metal roots around 2009 with the progressive metal behemoth of an album, ‘Night Is The New Day’.

There is a track from one of their albums, ‘Viva Emptiness’, I (shamefully) missed out on, called ‘Omerta’ which has the line ‘Why have you waited so long?’.

I couldn’t agree more as ‘Dead Air’ sets out to show me what I’ve been missing.

Katatonia were all set to tour in 2020 and showcase the unanimously acclaimed  ‘City Burials’ album to live audiences worldwide.

This, obviously, proved impossible, so the band decided to get together, perform live in the studio in front of an imagined audience and film and record the gig.

And rather than draw up their own setlist, they had a vote via their website to let their fans decide what tracks they wanted to hear in a live setting.

Whether it was what the band was expecting is unknown, but seven of the tracks are from ‘The Great Cold Distance’ album from 2006 with just three from ‘City Burials’.

So, not a showcase for the new album then, but what it turns out to be is a magnificent retrospective involving twenty tracks from seven of the band’s back catalogue re-imagined in a live setting.

Engineered and mixed by long-term collaborator David Castillo, you get the distinctive feeling that the band have really thrown their heart and soul into this project in an effort to reward both long-time fans and us Johnny-come-lately’s who boarded the train late.

There is so much to admire here that trying to select highlights is an almost futile exercise.

I get the feeling that they have deliberately ‘toned-down’ many of the tracks to allow them to stand on their own merits and breathe rather than just demonstrate how loud they are.

There’s still plenty of ‘machine gun’ riffage – ‘July’, ‘Soils Song’, ‘My Twin’, ‘Evidence’, etc. and even the dreaded death growls occasionally, but there’s also so much of that melancholic, uplifting and atmospheric tunesmithery that Katatonia have, in recent years, made their own on the likes of ‘Into The White’, ‘Old Heart Falls’, the haunting ‘Unfurl’, ‘The Racing Heart’ and the emotive catharsis of ‘Lacquer’ from ‘City Burials’.

There is supreme musicianship throughout, with Anders Nyström’s guitar work exceptional, the drumming of Daniel Moilanen an exempli-gratia of light and shade and the voice of Jonas Renkse – which is the glue that holds it all together and gives Katatonia their almost unique sound.

This should keep long term fans happy until live music returns, will surprise newly-acquired fans that their back catalogue wasn’t all doom metal and will act as a perfect introduction to all those wanting to know what all the fuss is about.

It’s deserved fuss. This is simply superb.  *****

EP review: RINGO STARR – Zoom In

RINGO STARR - Zoom In

[Release date 19.03.21]

Very few people can generate the goodwill and love that Ringo Starr does globally. Sure, when you’ve been a member of the biggest band ever, you’re bound to have some support, but he just keeps putting out strong and glorious material during the five decades since the Fab Four went their separate ways. He’s always been an icon but his primary focus has always been the music and that is the key to his continued success. A drummer with style and verve, his own playing so distinct and his drive to make the world a better place typified by his always present smile and peace sign in a legion of images of the man has made him a lasting cultural embodiment of cool.

This new five track EP will continue the legend, adding to his already sparkling solo catalogue a quintet of gems that are hand crafted to bring sunshine in these darkest of times. The fact that he’s joined by a star-studded supporting cast of some of the biggest names in music only adds an extra shimmer to proceedings.

Opener ‘Here’s To The Nights’ kicks things off in a suitably anthemic and splendid way, seeing Starr at his most joyous and inspiring. A lovely, mid paced and easy going call to join together in love and friendship, it is lifted with a huge cast of backing vocalists including Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Corrine Bailey Ray, Ben Harper, Sheryl Crowe and Dave Grohl amongst others. With the addition of Steve Lukather, Nathan East and Benmont Tench bringing their own musical magic you have a line-up that few could dream about, let alone bring together. Together they make such an ecstatic noise that you believe that the power of this song solely could heal the world.

It speaks a lot that second track, the rolling rocker ‘Zoom In Zoom Out’, isn’t totally overwhelmed by what went before but just shows the strength of the material. The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger certainly makes his present felt here, his playing suitably quicksilver and packed with feel, deft little touches a delight. ‘Teach Me To Tango’ and ‘Waiting For The Tide To Turn’ both radiate sunshine and good times, the former a fiesta of life and passion, the latter a lilting reggae groove that’s irresistible.

Upbeat to the last note, the EP closes with ‘Not Enough Love In The World’, a big and bouncing pop rock tune that is built to carry the positive message at its core. All five tracks showing what can be done with a bit of ingenuity, time and a heart as big as a continent, ‘Zoom In’ provides not just some great songs but a pathway and a mantra to better times. Love really is all you need. *****

Album review: THE ALARM – War

THE ALARM - War

The Alarm [Release date 26.02.21]

The Alarm are back with a new album, written and recorded in isolation, which physically arrived with fans six weeks from its inception thanks to a special limited edition blank CD-R they can burn themselves. The music was sent electronically on February 25th (Mike Peters’ Birthday), a day earlier than the official release. The Alarm, like the Levellers and Marillion, have created their own ‘fan world’ where they can pull off innovations like this and keep the loyal fans happy. In a nod to the band’s past the album’s title is of course raw spelt backwards, the title of the band’s 1991 album and the last one to feature the band’s original line-up.

Joining Mike Peters are his wife Jules Jones Peters (keys), James Stevenson (guitar), Craig Adams (bass) and Steve “Smiley” Barnard (drums).

‘Protect & Survive’ certainly sets the album’s stall out – ‘280 ways to start a war’, ‘280 ways to infect us all’ – a reference to that popular social cesspit of opinions that is Twitter. The album’s subjects as you’d expect cover the pandemic, politics and above all hope, something that has always run strong through the songwriting of Mike Peters. Indeed, ‘We Got This’ has a positive message despite the current global pandemic. Nice bit of 80’s approved synth on this one too!

‘Warriors’ goes EDM midway through, although the typical Alarm rabble rousing guitar and rhythm drive the song along nicely.Jim Stevenson certainly makes his mark on this one and the rest of the album has plenty of guitar grit.

‘Still Unsafe’ (another nod to the band’s past and the classic ‘Unsafe Building’) is the weakest song on the album, although a slower song it just lacks the passion and sonic assault of the rest of the album.

There is a cover, namely Massive Attack’s ‘Safe From Harm’, which features Skindred’s Benji Webbe trading vocals with Mike Peters. Check out the video for this one to see the passion and fun both singers have on this one.

If Mike Peters and the Alarm form a political party they’d certainly get my vote. Music for the here and now, with lyrics and emotions we can all relate to. Perfect. ****1/2

Album review: RONNIE ATKINS – One Shot

Frontiers Records [release date 12.03.21]

Ronnie Atkins, founding member of Denmark’s Pretty Maids, bows out with his one and only solo album, One Shot. Ronnie has recently been diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. So the album title is as much a philosophical statement as it is a challenge.

His solo material is clearly transmitting on the same wavelength as his parent band … a hard edged melodic rock that gained the ‘Maids the musical currency that remains intact today.

Supported by Kee Marcello, Pontus Norgren, Oliver Hartmann and others, producer/ arranger/ guitarist, Chris Laney, captures the analogue warmth and indeed the underrated sonic clarity of many hard rock recordings of the genre’s glorious past. Together with Atkins, they scale the heights of its mid eighties peak with ‘Real’ and ‘Frequency of Love’, both densely textured, stadium sized melodic rock songs, flamboyant fusions of pop and AOR.

It’s notable that Atkins’ voice has coarsened audibly over the years. This gives his vocals a lived in, been-round-the-block a few times authority, making songs like ‘Scorpio’ and ‘Before The Rise Of An Empire’, with their defiant, binary moral colouring, a much more compelling listen.

In roundabout fashion, the beautifully lyricised and orchestrated romanticism of ‘Miles Away’ and ‘One By One’, reminding us of the important things in life, lead us into the album’s two climactic tracks.

The immense ‘Subjugated’ is a bruising lyrical encounter, full of Dylanesque observations on life, and a refusal to bow down to authority. It is Ronnie Atkins’ history in a song. On the surface he is denouncing the erosion of our freedoms, but it’s as much a comment on the durability of his spirit, as it is a declaration of his beliefs and principles. It is one of many poignant moments on the album.

But the grittier, ‘I Prophesied’, just might be the one we remember most. It uses music as an emotional power. It’s disturbingly dark in places (“I See Angels Descending”), light in others, but is heartstoppingly melodic, and is ultimately life affirming. ****

Album review: TOUCH – Tomorrow Never Comes

TOUCH-Tomorrow Never Comes

Escape Music [Release Date 26.03.21]

Here’s a reunion few ever expected to see. Touch are most famous to the wider world as the band that opened the first ever Monsters of Rock at Download in 1980. Many years later I discovered their debut album, which with its layered vocal arrangements and over the top pomp rock swiftly became one of my all time favourites.

Very little has been seen or heard of them in the intervening 40 years. A second album was recorded but only eventually saw the light of day as a second disc on a reissue in the late nineties which was one of Frontiers Records earliest releases.

Then in 2014 a Touch line-up played the farewell Firefest as a one-off show, though the effect was lessened by the fact there was just one original member in keyboard wizard Mark Mangold- the only one to have much of a profile in the intervening years, initially as a songwriter of Michael Bolton’s great AOR work, then with his own projects, notably Flesh and Blood, The Sign and most notably Drive, She Said.

So it was with a sense of disbelief that I heard the news a year or two back that all four of the original band’s members- including guitarist Craig Brooks, bassist Doug Howard and drummer Glenn Kithcart-  had reunited, which sounded too good to be true until this album dropped.

Unsurprisingly a keyboard intro heralds the opening title track which is quite piano-driven with flashes of lead guitar work. Up tempo and melodic, its nevertheless a fairly low key opener but those three way vocals that defined the Touch sound intertwine beautifully. ‘Let It Come’  is also vintage Touch, overly so as it rather cheekily reprises the intro to their best-known song ‘Don’t You Know What Love Is’. The vocals of Craig Brooks, the highest pitched of the trio, sound remarkably good supported by backing vocals, with fine keyboard and guitar solos.

But then comes an indication that this comeback is very much not playing it safe. ‘Swan Song’  is nearly eight minutes and far proggier in nature – there is not much of a hook or chorus and large parts are instrumental with the band, Mark in particular going off on some freeform jamming that will appeal to fans of ELP or early period Styx and Kansas.

‘Try To Let Go’ is modern and experimental in feel with a tribal chanting effect on the choruses – I couldn’t get into it when it was a Drive She Said song and try as I might, it still jars with the rest of the album.  ‘Fire and Ice’ is reassuringly more Touch with Craig’s soaring vocals and classic synth and organ work in the middle.

They then change tack slightly again with a pair of mellow, classy songs with the emphasis on vocals and instrumental excess reined in, in ‘Trippin Over Shadows’ which I am pretty sure has Doug singing, and ‘Frozen Ground’, led off by Mark. The arrangements are brilliant and on the latter the harmony vocals go into Crosby Stills and Nash territory at one point, though there is still room for some  vintage parping synths.

As a complete contrast ‘Lil Bit of Rock n Roil’ rocks out with a shuffle rhythm that sits somewhere between ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ and ‘Race With The Devil’, complete with Sweet–type helium-filled backing vocals on the chorus and a guitar and synth battle that outdoes vintage Deep Purple.  Best of all, the sense of fun they must have had making it really shines through.

Vocals are also shared on ‘Glass’ which is a grower and one of the more experimental on the album, as is ‘Scream at the Sky’, a long moody piece with an almost jazzy swing but some nice guitar work from Craig.

The penultimate  number ‘’Wanna Hear You Say’ may be my favourite on the whole album, pompy AOR bliss with vocals soaring over a bank of harmonies Boston-style,  and more classic keyboard work, the brittle synths reminiscent of late seventies bands like Roadmaster and Zon. ‘Run for Your Life’, though not quite in the same league with a somewhat repetitive ‘its all too much chorus’ ends the album with more trademark synth solos.

This is an intriguing release, with enough of the classic Touch sound yet in places harking even further back to the seventies. Yet it is boldly diverse, rarely formularised and even experimental in places.  While nothing will ever compare to the majesty of the debut this is a better comeback  than even their most fanatical fans could have realistically imagined.  **** 1/4
