Album review: DOWNES BRAIDE ASSOCIATION – Halcyon Hymns

Cherry Red [Release date 05.02.21]

Fourth album from DBA, the fruitful poprock collaboration between Geoff (Asia/Yes) Downes and uber songwriter/producer, Chris (Guetta/Aguilera) Braide. Halcyon Hymns is their living-in-the-lockdown album, and as the title more than subtly suggests, it’s a recording filled with yearning and rose tinted memories, looking back to a place and a time that perhaps never really existed.

But it’s an enjoyable journey, again showcasing the kind of casually ornate songwriting and urbanity of tone for which both are rightfully famous. Each and every song is dressed in evocative, sophisticated arrangements. And each has an hypnotic quality.

If you can stand the puffed up prose on the intro, opening track ‘Love Among The Ruins’, classical, lyrical, and ‘Warm Summer Sun’, full of youthful memories and hints of regret, are prime cuts. Elegant, somnambulant progressions of dreamy prog-lite pop, full of sweetly seductive hooks and hazy sonic colouring. Braide’s high toned voice never breaks sweat. And they hold onto just enough of Downes’ rock sensibilities to make it sound far less conventionally poppy than you might expect.

Together, these two musicians are proven experts in songcraft, a quality emphasised by Braide’s arrangements. On the elongated ‘Holding The Heavens’, they take the fragility of the music and amplify it until it transmutes into exciting urban rock, then down shift into reverse on’King Of The Sunset’, a haunting ballad with a quietly progressive rock tone, that drifts off into the er, … sunset, leaving a vapour trail of harmonies in its wake.

The ballad, ‘Today’ is the one song that cuts against the grain of the album’s predominant arrangements. Sketched around Downes’ sturdy piano chord play, it is distinctly McCartney-esque, staying on just the right side of whimsy. With the right push at the right time this one could be a chart contender.

Elsewhere, Downes’ dominant piano and synth accompaniment is economic and uncluttered, allowing the songs the space they need to shimmer and shine, creating a gravity defying weightlessness on Braide’s upbeat, jangling pop paean to his high class ex girlfriend/partner, ‘Riding Horses’, and an almost palpable sense of melancholy on ‘Remembrance’, where the past becomes a remembered world into which his listeners can escape.

Satisfyingly, less turns out to be so much more on this slow-growing but charming album. ***1/2

Album review: ACCEPT – Too Mean To Die

ACCEPT - Too Mean To Die

Nuclear Blast [Release date 29.01.21]

Accept, the German masters of heavy metal for more than 40 years and key influencers on bands such as Metallica and Iron Maiden, return with their 16th studio album – ‘Too Mean To Die’.

Accept have a global reputation of being one of the best and loudest live acts, based on a number of world tours and headline slots at festivals. With a pedigree that has millions of records sold, top 10 chart positions worldwide, this new offering has a lot to live up to! It is the fifth album with Mark Tornillo as front man, recorded in Nashville, USA and produced by Andy Sneap.

When the band and Andy met in Nashville in March, they couldn’t forsee what would happen 2 weeks later, early into their studios sessions, they had to abruptly draw to a close and return to home due to Covid 19 impact on travelling arrangements, “the risk that none of us would be able to return home at that time was simply too great” says Hoffmann.

The band regrouped in July in Nashville to continue recording the album with only their producer missing, not to be defeated, the band would record and communicate with their producer online, “we recorded the songs… He produced from a distance. Amazingly it worked better than we thought it would… Fortunately we had already recorded a large part of the songs before the break, so the experiment with Andy Sneap working as a remote producer worked well. Special circumstances often lead to very special albums” Hoffmann

Too Mean To Die alludes to Covid 19 “the fans will get a hard, direct and uncompromising metal album, but of course accompanied by a wink: we are too mean to die! Accept do not let themselves get down!” Hoffmann

From the opening track, ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ you can hear the result of the newcomers to the band – Philip Shouse (guitar) and Martin Motnik (bass) as the riffs are sublime and the heavy bass line sets the stall out from the beginning.

The title track, ’Too Mean To Die’ should be cranked up and already sounds like a rock classic – Accept are back!

Impressive guitar duels continue throughout the tracks with ’No One’s Master’ and ’Symphony of Pain’ having impressive solos and key changes that defy the pace.

’The Undertaker’ is melodic and atmospheric with fantastic gravelly vocals setting the tone. Wolf Hoffmann states it as being one of the most notable and brillant pieces on the album – I don’t disagree.

However, my stand out, absolute favourite track on the album is ’The Best is Yet to Come’ , a ballad (I am not usually a ballad gal) with its slower melodic opening and showcasing Mark Tornillo’s vocal range and the rather beautiful sentiment of the lyrics

“When it rains, I look for rainbows,
When its dark I see the stars,
Call me naive,
I will always say, the best is yet to come”

I’ll raise a glass to that!

‘How Do We Sleep’ is so topical and really a reflective song of it’s time – “how do we sleep at night with the world around us going to hell?” Indeed!

’Not my Problem’ is undoubtedly a crowd pleaser – you can almost hear the crowd singing along to this track – will be awesome live.

With the closing track, an instrumental, ‘Samson & Deliah’ reminding you of their orchestral capabilities and leaving you feeling like you have just been on a journey that was reminiscent of all the good about our pedigree metal giants.

‘Too Mean To Die’ not only demonstrates that Accept are back, but they have delivered an unwavering , relevant classic metal album yet again. ****

Album review: LUCERO – When You Found Me

LUCERO – When You Found Me

Thirty Tigers [Release date 29.01.21]

Lucero’s last album, 2018’s ‘Among The Ghosts’, was a real treat and new discovery to this reviewer. Lucero have reunited once more with Grammy Award winning producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, Drive-by Truckers) to put together this album at the historic Sam Phillips Recording Studio, in their hometown.

Where ‘Among The Ghosts’ was a more stripped back sound, this new album sees the band tapping into a more rock sound and wider musical soundscape. The band’s other secret weapon is singer and guitarist Ben Nichols, who has the perfect voice – world weary with a southern accent – for these songs of everyday life. ‘The Match’ being a prime example, where the listener loses themselves in the tale told by the words and music.

‘Outrun The Moon’, a story of murder and escapism, is perhaps a typical Lucero song, both strong lyrically and musically. An inviting mix of country, rock and indie.

The other good thing about this album is the variety, for instance on ‘Coffin Nails’ it features a narration from Nichols own grandfather. It is this song’s ability in particular that allows you to immerse yourself in the music that makes this album such a winner.

On ‘As Good As Gone’ and ‘Back in Ohio’ they show they are adept at producing classy southern rock, with  shades of Bob Seger on latter, especially on the piano playing of Rick Steff and the sax solo. Definitely one for a future single release.

It does miss the mark on ‘Pull Me Close Don’t Let Go’, however such dips are rare on the album.

‘When You Found Me’ is a plaintive ballad to finish the album on a high note. The piano, keys and acoustic guitar arrangement is sublime on this song.

Lucero are a band who know their sound and are comfortable with it, giving alt country fans a musical anchor in these uncertain times. ***1/2

Album review: THE PROG COLLECTIVE – Worlds On Hold

THE PROG COLLECTIVE - Worlds On Hold

Cleopatra Records [Release date 16.12.20]

The latest iteration of The Prog Collective is ever more relevant in these times of artist lockdown and lack of live.  A project started in 2012, and spearheaded by Yes bassist Billy Sherwood, the idea is to gather a who’s who of prog, mostly retro names it has to be said, but nevertheless providing a much needed outlet.  And certainly of interest to their fans and followers of this franchise.

Todd Rundgren opens up shop with the powerful and very relevant title track ‘World’s On Hold’ with violinist L.Shankar adding support whilst Geoff Tate fronts the first single ‘Two Trajectories’ with Bumblefoot on guitar.

With Sherwood at the controls you will not be surprised that this, and other songs, are very Yes sounding.  This is reinforced by the inclusion of vocalist Jon Davison, Geoff Downes , Patrick Moraz, Alan White and Tony Kaye albeit on different tracks.  That does produce a certain same-iness, and all players definitely in their comfort zone.

Elsewhere other contributors include a surprisingly lack-lustre although under-utilised  Jan Akkerman, Steve Hillage and Sonja Kristina (an excellent ‘Brave New World’) whilst Steve Hackett gets a look-in on ‘Glory Days Ahead’ with Arjen Anthony Lucassen.

The lack of lyrics in the rather basic album packaging is something of an oversight.  The album is a mix of original material and cover versions including three previously released bonus tracks.

The “original” covers include ‘Solisbury Hill’ (with Roine Stolt), ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ (Graham Bonnet & Derek Sherinian), ‘Eye In The Sky’ (a somewhat strange pairing of melodic rocker Joe Lynn Turner and Tull acolyte Martin Barre) and ‘Nights In White Satin’ which resurrects the great David Clayton-Thomas with Geoff Downes.  At least these pieces don’t sound like Yes!

The best album Yes never made?  ***1/2

Album review: FANCY – The Complete Recordings

Get Ready to ROCK! Radio features a series of interview specials to tie in with the Fancy release and the forthcoming Ray Fenwick compilation.

FANCY - The Complete Recordings

Lemon/Cherry Red [Release date 29.01.21]

Fancy probably passed many punters by in the 1970s, as they could easily have got mixed up in the glam rock era and overlooked.  Fortunately this didn’t happen in the USA where they had some success, with two chart singles, and extensive tour dates.

The band was something of a “supergroup” with seasoned sessioners Ray Fenwick and Mo Foster joining future Judas Priest drummer Les Binks and vocalist Annie Kavanagh.  This 3-CD box set brings together their two albums with a bonus disc recorded live at Ronnie Scotts in 1975 together with an informative archive radio interview.

The band was the brainchild of pop producer veteran Mike Hurst who had worked previously with Ray Fenwick when the guitarist was with Spencer Davis Group.  He brought in a Penthouse Pet – Helen Caunt – (you couldn’t make this up!) as a vocalist for the surprise American hit single a cover of ‘Wild Thing’.

It certainly provided an interesting focal point but ultimately (and fortunately) they settled on a theatrical singer Annie Kavanagh who appears on the two albums and had performed in big musicals like ‘Hair’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

The album ‘Wild Thing’ really represents Fenwick (and Foster’s)  interest in R&B and funk during this period and we could group  Fancy with contemporary bands such as Kokomo, Sniff N The Tears, Cado Belle and even Ace  who – at their best – provided us with soulful, ballsy rock.

The single could be dismissed as a novelty with the Penthouse Pet breathing heavily throughout.   As Mike Hurst recalls: “I wanted a slow funky record, with liberal splashes of sex”.  Pity poor Annie when she had to recreate this on stage!   The track does retain a certain originality with Alan Hawkshaw’s early synth providing another focal point.

But tracks like ‘Love For Sale’,  ‘I’m A Woman’ and ‘Feel Good’ show the band at their ballsiest.  Perhaps the first album was a tentative step to forge a more distinctive style as it is also peppered with fairly perfunctory pop songs like ‘Move On’, ‘One Night’ and ‘Between The Devil And Me’ the latter two with added brass.

1975′s ‘Something To Remember’ (called ‘Turn You On’ in the USA) expanded the band’s range still further but keeping things funky with tracks like the excellent ‘She’s Riding The Rock Machine’ (included here in different permutations) and a great cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Was Made To Love Him’.   The album shows a band maturing with Mose Allison’s ‘Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy’ and the soulful ‘Stop’.

The live disc is a great bonus and perfectly captures a small club gig.  Thankfully this showcase set at Ronnie Scott’s in June 1975 was recorded on the night by the compilation’s genial curator Mo Foster and reflects a tight and road tested unit made even tighter by their Stateside touring.  Helping out on second guitar was Jo Partridge who at the time played in Kiki Dee’s band.  There’s an extended version of ‘Love For Sale’ complete with de rigeur drum solo.

What happened to Fancy? Well, they could be construed as one of those poptastic “moments in time” and “of the time” whose success surprised everyone not least the band and Mike Hurst.  They were aided by Hurst’s pop production talents and Ray Fenwick’s commercial sensibilities plus great musicianship, not least Kavanagh’s superb vocals.

Starved of continued record label interest, Fenwick and Foster soon returned to the more lucrative session work, Ray Fenwick only months ahead of a stint with Ian Gillan whilst Les Binks was to join heavy metallers Judas Priest.  Annie Kavanagh married and returned to Australia.

A handful of bonuses are spread across this collection, including non-album tracks and two Fenwick instrumentals plus the Mo Foster penned ‘Driving Home’.

With entertaining and informative liner notes from Mike Hurst and Mo Foster, and each CD housed in a facsimilie card sleeve,  this really is the complete package and you’ll find here at least something to take your fancy.  *****

Album review: MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP – Immortal

Nuclear Blast Records [Release date 29.01.21]

You would forgive Michael Schenker if he announced he was about to step back from music for a bit and take things easy. Now 65 and celebrating not only 50 years in the business but 40 years as a solo artist, you would gladly concede that he had rightly earned a bit of free time. However, as Michael says on the album release blurb he doesn’t ‘live to play, he plays to live’!

With that in mind he has resurrected the MSG tag after a couple of ‘Michael Schenker Fest’ albums and has produced another classic rock gem. With no less than 14 different musicians on the album Michael has continued to enlist the cream of the rock world to his cause and the results prove that there is no substitute for talent.

If anyone were to suggest that Michael should plan a quiet retirement rather than heading back into the studio then the opening track ‘Drilled To Kill’ is the perfect retort. This is a hard and heavy track underpinned with machine gun like drumming and a soaring vocal provided in this instance by Ralph Scheepers from Primal Fear. This was the first track released from the album and it certainly grabs your attention with a relentless barrage of furious riffs firing from Schenker’s fretboard and a wave of Hammond organ.

Joe Lynn Turner then steps up to the mic for ‘Don’t Die On Me Now’ which has a chugging riff and a big, melodic chorus. Turner then hands the mic to Ronnie Romero for ‘Knight Of The Dead’ which again charges along at a furious pace. This is classic rock at it’s very best and well worth the multiple rounds of quarantine Schenker had to enduring as he travelled to and from Germany for the recording sessions.

Vocal duties are swapped once more as album producer, Michael Voss of Mad Max, steps from behind the mixing desk to add his voice to the big ballad of the album ‘After The Rain’. A majestic piece that can rightly rub shoulders with the very best epics in classic rock, a real album highlight.

The riff to ‘Devil’s Daughter’ is the closest Schenker will get to writing a country song but the double bass drum attack makes sure that this is an out and out rocker. ‘Sail The Darkness’ is next up with Romero back at the mic giving this a very ‘Ronne James Dio’ period Rainbow like sound which is no bad thing.

Things then take a lighter, almost AOR, turn on ‘The Queen Of Thorns and Roses’ which adds another element to the album and provides a breather before you plunge back into the full on rock of ‘Come On Over’ with Michael producing one of the best solos on the album in the mid-section.

That only leaves two songs to round off the album and what a fantastic pairing they are. ‘Sangria Morte’ is first up and is a real Schenker classic with excellent six string dexterity throughout.

The final song though is one very special to Michael as it was the first song he wrote at the tender age of 15. ‘In Search Of The Peace Of Mind’ was first released on the Scorpions ‘Lonesome Crow’ album and it is perfectly reworked here to great effect. The song twists and turns gently leading to a big final flourish complete with more stunning fretwork from the maestro.

I was slightly disappointed by the last two Schenker Fest album releases as they sounded like they were constrained and made to fit the musicians in certain parts. However, here Michael has been freed to cut loose and explore all avenues and this is his best release since the ‘Temple Of Rock’ albums.

He says in the accompanying blurb that on this album he has ‘played from the heart, as always’ and I am glad to report it is beating stronger than ever. Immortal may be pushing it but there is plenty of life left in Mr Schenker yet!  *****

Album review: WORLD GOES ROUND – S/T

WORLD GOES ROUND - World Goes Around

Viper Records [Release date 22.01.21]

It was 30 years ago today that World Goes Round recorded their one and only album (Ed: we might be a year or two out). This supremely talented array of artists, whose names (almost) always fell below the fold, are unarguably the adult pop genre’s most famous unknown band.

Individually and collectively, Frank Musker, Elizabeth Lamers, Jeff Hull and Marty Walsh wrote hit songs for a multitude of acts, including high profile artists like Heart, Susannah Hoffs, Queen, Cher and Eric Clapton.

Together with producer Tommy Vicari (Prince, Jeffrey Osborne, Philip Bailey, Billy Preston and many others) they recorded this album and went their separate ways. It’s now been dusted down and polished up.

It’s unquestionably born of time and place. And is the sound that came to define the second half of the eighties. It was a modern, new wave influenced, blue eyed soul album with a distinctive pop flavouring.

Vicari keeps the arrangements deceptively simple, giving the music an all round accessibility and space between. By the end of ‘Rebel Heart’ and ‘Joy& Pain’, we’re already knee deep in synthesisers and drum machines. It sounded like the future in 1989. By ‘Put It On The Line’, we’re adjusting. The song’s soulfully sleek programming, punctuated by the funky, syncopated guitar style of Nile Rodgers, is a perfect fit for this album.

Vicari’s production is crystal clear, 3 dimensional, you can hear the words, every one. And despite its provenance, it doesn’t sound sterile. Vicari works the programming consoles like a Simon Rattle at the rostrum, expertly wielding the baton, creating a rich panoply of sounds. And the music is full of little love stories (the Bangles-ish ‘Once Around The Sun’ is a peach), threaded with visionary pieces like ‘Big House’ that warn us of Global Warming. No decade should be without its socially aware pop songs, it would seem.

By the mournful ‘Please Please’ and the Mr Mister lookalike, ‘Puttin Down Roots’, we’re fully tuned in, and being later turned on by the compact sophistication of the rhythmically intricate ballad ‘Can’t let Go’, and the upbeat AOR of ‘Round The World’, an outlier that recalls the commercial nous of Jefferson Starship.

To quote a cliché, this album is a blast from the past. And un-cliche-like, it succeeds in reminding us just how stylish and innovative the past could be. ***1/2

Single review: KING OF THE DEAD – Destroy My Name

KING OF THE DEAD – Destroy My Name

Independent [Release date 08.01.21]

The first few bars of interplay between rhythm and lead guitar  from King Of The Dead could be Status Quo, but once the vocals are launched we’re back in NWOBHM territory. Pacey, piercing, high pitched, they wring maximum emotion out of the lyrics, relaxing a little when the raucous verse smooths out through some satisfyingly cool chord shifts. It’s at this point we sit up and take notice.

The PR says punk. Maybe they mean energetic. When King Of The Dead hit the melodic bridge and gritty chorus they could be a yet to be polished up Filter, or Stabbing Westward when they were edgy.

Good band, songwriting is strong, they have a future, especially if they ditch the nihilistic metal conceit. And if it’s self produced they’ve got studio talent to burn, even if they never make it.

Album review: IRON SAVIOR – Skycrest

IRON SAVIOUR - Skycrest

AFM Records [Release date 04.12.20]

Installed like a figurehead at the prow of European heavy metal, Piet Sielck’s Iron Savior proudly trail the story of this classic musical movement behind them. You could argue that along with Kai Hansen, Sielck kick started the entire Power Metal genre when the duo left Helloween to form Iron Saviour, at the turn of the millenium.

When Hansen departed in 2000 to focus on his own band, Gamma Ray, Sielck ploughed on. Skycrest is his band’s twelfth album in a litle over 20 years, and his enduring skill as a songwriter/arranger/producer is never more evident than on the Wagner meets Maiden title track that opens the album proper (assuming that Wagner wrote operatic, rock’n'roll arias for growling German metalheads).

It’s useful to be reminded that that second guitarist, Joachim Kustner’s playing fits Sielck’s like a velvet glove. Their dazzling, twinned axework on ‘Welcome To The New World’ and ‘Silver Bullet’ is breathtaking. Similarly, the anthemic ‘End Of The Rainbow’, a blazing, streamlined slice of heavy metal, is ignited by the duo’s fiery, eminently melodic axework.

The lyrics across this new album reveal a more mature narrative, reflecting on an alienated world and personal demons. In his interpretation of these themes on ‘Souleater’ and ‘Ease Your Pain’, Sierck’s growl disguises some subtle phrasing that marks him out as a cut above the rest of the balls-to-the-wall competition. But you probably already knew that.

Elsewhere, the tribute ‘There Can Be Only One’ and the slower paced ‘Raise The Flag’ sound like Teutonic twists on stadium sized hard rock anthems. They are as if the band is celebrating the moment it found a unique voice in European Heavy Metal, and in doing so, a unique identity. ****

Album review: BITE THE BULLET – Black & White

BITE THE BULLET - Black & White

Escape Music [Release date 27.11.20]

Bite The Bullet were originally formed in 1986 by singer songwriter Mick Benton and drummer Graham Cowling (who are also the only two musicians on this album) and they released their debut album in 1989. It failed to make much of an impact, also live wise fate was against them too as a support slot with ELO was cancelled.

Benton and Cowling remained friends and they still played in pubs and clubs over the years which brings their story up to 2019 when their debut was reissued on CD. Both found the impetus to write new music which led to recording ‘Black & White’, their second album.

Songs like the funky AOR of ‘Last Chance Radio’ and ‘The Lonely Road’ would have been all over the airwaves back in the 80’s.  They do rock out at times as can be heard on ‘Rocks To Stones’, a memorable melodic rocker.

Mick Benton has a lovely, smooth vocal which is really highlighted on ‘Starlight’, where one assumes he added the lush backing vocals too.

Two bands they really remind of are the Outfield and Mr Mister. All three bands know how to pen a good melody and catchy chorus. For these artists melody is king and rightly so.

Bite The Bullet have stayed true to their original sound which may not be falvour of the month, but will always find an audience with fans of melodic rock.

If you are after polished AOR meets pop rock, Bite The Bullet hits the target. ****

Album review: CATFISH – Exile – Live In Lockdown

Catfish - Exile Live In Lockdown

Self release [Release date 01.12.20]

With their first gig in 5 months, with no rehearsals, a new drummer in Kev Hickman and just their own frisson to feed the adrenalin for a live stream, Catfish join the ranks of bands who have successfully cut a live album under the strictures of Covid.

‘Exile-Live In Lockdown’ is a fine double CD/DVD that finds the band in the final stages of its own musical evolution and on the cusp of new musical directions.

They explore brusque rock-blues impulses with grungy and even proggy influences, while keyboard player Paul Long provides a subtler focus with which to let the songs breathe.

At times they try that little bit too hard. Matt Long’s ferocious vocals for example, are a shade undisciplined on the otherwise outstanding ‘Archangel’, as emotion almost gets the better of him.

His growling guitar tones on ‘The Root Of All Evil’ are also a claustrophobic presence meaning the song could easily have been shorn of its over extended ending.

The above points of course have to be set against the pressure of the delivering a worthy performance in the true spirit of the need to play live in such adverse circumstances.

And if Matt Long’s tenor on the opening ‘Broken Man’ and the breathless verse on ‘Break Me Down’ owes much to Joe Bonamassa, they are nonetheless a perfect opening brace on which the band hits its stride after 5 months of inactivity.

On the Paul Long sung ‘Ghosts’ they cleverly settle for an atmospheric intro, warmer vocal phrasing and a mellifluous piano, which together cleverly evokes the song title before leading to a tension resolving solo.

The portentous grungy stomp of ‘Soulbreaker’ is darker again, fashioned by a railroad chant and dirt-toned guitar on a tale of retribution which smoulders with intent.

And as the album subtly reveals the full spectrum of the band’s repertoire, they lean into the perfunctory stomp and contrasting sweep of ‘The Big Picture’. It’s an inviting melange of beefy organ, tremulous guitar, double vocal lines, Adam Pyke’s bass solo and stop-time verse.

As with the best live set-lists they start with a bang and rise again to shine in the middle on the above track, before positively sparkling on ‘Better Days’.

The latter is a very catchy shuffle with an uplifting theme and sounds very familiar. Matt arguably delivers his best vocal on the album, while the unexpected reggae break amplifies the celebratory nature of the title.

Everything seems to flow towards ‘Archangel’, which the band belatedly released as a single from the ‘Burning Bridges’ album. It’s their best song and is delivered with all the gusto and passion that the lyrics demand.

You could imagine in normal circumstances, with the band playing to a rapt audience, that the emotional catharsis of this song would bring them to a point in the gig where they would seriously have to consider where to go next.

Without the audience energy and shared experience of the moment, they settle on ‘Too Far To Fall’ a relaxed shuffle on which they rebuild their momentum on the back of a booming chorus which owes much to The Hoax.

And so the closing opus ‘Exile’ with its gently voiced guitar opening, Bonamassa style whispered vocal introspection and sprinkled with a southern rock feel.  Matt Long’s chiming chords hover and float above his close-to-the-mic vocal, as the band launches into a heartfelt rock/blues ballad with proggy keyboard influences.

‘Exile-Live In Lockdown’ may occasionally be rough around the edges, but it’s an honest live album made without the safety net of multiple post recording edits.

It’s shot through with the kind of integrity and vitality all too rarely found in live albums at the best of times.

The band may be in ‘Exile’ but they are self evidently ready to come in from the cold. ****

Album review: IRON MASK – Master Of Masters

IRON MASK – Master Of Masters

AFM Records [Release date 05.12.20]

For those who live and work outside Power Metal territory, bands like Iron Mask sound much like every other Power Metal band. When you’re on the inside though, perspective comes easy. Different musical styles readily swim into focus.

Established 2002, Iron Mask are very ably and skillfully led by guitarist/songwriter, Dushan Petrossi. And as every Iron Mask review ever written will tell you, his axework has the scope and scale of Malmsteen’s neo classical style. In fairness, he’s well beyond that now, and has been so for a while

What Petrossi does is distil heavy metal to its elemental state, then adorn it with real melodies, probably his greatest gift. The fact that it’s often delivered at multiple bpms and adorned with careering, neo classical guitarwork doesn’t disguise the quality of what’s within.

It’s quite noticeable that on this new album, Master Of Masters, he borrows heavily from Kai Hansen’s modus operandi – a simplification of Classical Music’s highly sophisticated form, with melodies, bass lines and chord progressions tightly controlled by spine tingling orchestration. ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ sees Malmsteen’s Trilogy stylistically fighting a fascinating duel with Carl Orf’s Carmina Burana, and the escalating operatics of ‘Never Kiss The Ring’ suggest that this simplification still allows for all the drama we can handle.

The ferocious guitars and multi movement treatment of ‘Revolution Rise’ and ‘One Against All’ show more conventional heavy metal traits, indication perhaps that Maidens and Masks share the same DNA in their Ironwork. They also give new vocalist Mike Slembrouk the opportunity to demonstrate his pleasingly articulated multi octave range.

Elsewhere, ‘Revolution Rise’s whirling celtic guitar orchestration and marching beat is a nice distraction from the heaviosity.

If the world of metal woke up to Iron Mask with 2011′s Black As Death, Master Of Masters is sure to keep it awake at night. ****

Album review: THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND – Live At The Nassau Coliseum, May 4 1979

THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND - Live At The Nassau Coliseum, May 4 1979

Floating World

Singer, songwriter, guitarist and violinist Charlie Daniels, who sadly left us last year, was a pioneer in that he brought together country, blues, bluegrass, rhythm’n’blues and southern rock. A kind of centre point, it’s not until you listen to some of his music that you see the some of the cross platform connection.

As well as playing violin on several Marshall Tucker albums, in ran a number of Volunteer Jams (one of which featured Molly Hatchet and Ted Nugent), he had several hit singles, including The Devil Went Down To Georgia.

This live set, recorded back in 1979 in New York, was originally a radio show that gets released here in full and what a pleasure it is.

After a drawn out intro, the band open with Jitterbug, which has much in common with The Allman Brothers, while Trudy is a little more mainstream country. The crown are loud and enthusiastic, and love tracks like Caballo Diablo.

Disc 2 opens with No Potion For The Pain, and is introduced as a new blues song, slow and heartfelt. Then Birmingham Blues picks up the pace somewhat. A couple of songs straddle 10 minutes, and there’s the classic Devil Went Down To Gorgia – one of my fave country tracks (well, I’m really not a country fan but this one stands out) and it’s given a real blast here. A high paced and energetic with quickfire vocals.

There’s so much to love here as the band mix (or switch between) related styles fluidly – the country is played with passion and mixed with styles it influenced (Southern Rock for example), and with blues thrown in, it’s everything artists like Billy Ray Cyrus aren’t.

A good live show and well recorded – really worth checking out. ****

Album review: DRAGONY – Viribus Unitis

Napalm Records [Release date 15.01.21]

This is the 4th album from the Austrian Power metal crew Dragony and it is a tale from the glorious days of empire when Emperor Franz Joseph ruled. However, this is no straightforward, boring history lesson as the story is given a Dragony twist, not sure the official version contains mention of zombies or cyber punks!

The story may be embellished but the full-on power metal accompaniment is most definitely the genuine article. Furious fretboard work and thunderous drumming are the order of the day and Dragony deliver in spades.

The album opens on a gentle note with the band’s take on Strauss’s ‘Blue Danube’, much like watching the Vienna New Year concert but with added guitars. We are soon into full on power metal though with ‘Gods Of War’ complete with breakneck riffs and athletic double bass drum work. ‘Love You To Death’ then kicks off with a majestic opening piece which flows into a slow burning track with a big, harmonious chorus.

Guitar duo Andres Poppernitsch and Simon Saito lead the way in ‘Magic’ with a huge riff which leads into a full-on metal romp with a great solo mid song. ‘Darkness Within’ then slows the pace with a brooding melody which is as dark as the title suggests. It’s not all downbeat though as there is a heavy mid-section to keep things rocking nicely.

‘A.E.I.O.U’ shows off the vocal talents of Siegfried Samer who has a rich, sonorous voice which is well suited to this style of music. The album title track follows riding on a wave of excellent double bass drumming provided by Frederic Brunner and contains multiple time and key changes.

‘Golden Dawn’ and ‘Made Of Metal (Cyberpunk Joseph)’ are both classic power metal tracks which will have you singing along in the choruses. The aptly named epic ‘Battle Royale’ ups the pace once more with a hint of Sabaton in the mix. In fact, Sabaton guitarist Tommy Johansson is one of several guests who appear on the album so there may well be some influence there. The album was also mixed at the studio of Sebastian Levermann of Orden Organ for added power metal kudos.

‘Legends Never Die’ contains a great sing along mid-section which is destined to be a live favourite whilst ‘Haben Sie Wien schon bei Nacht geseh’n’ finishes off the album with a final power metal flourish sung in the band’s native tongue.

Historically this album may take a few liberties with the retelling of the final days of the Hapsburg empire, however there is nothing false when it comes to the music and musicianship on show. This is power metal at it’s finest from a band and an album that deserve your attention, or the boys will send the zombies round…

Album review: SORCERESS OF SIN – Mirrored Revenge

SORCERESS OF SIN – Mirrored Revenge

Bandcamp [Release date 27.11.20]

Sorceress Of Sin formed in 2020 in Cambridge, based around vocalist/lyricist Lisa Skinner and her husband, drummer Paul Skinner. By day they run a post office but after hours they go all power metal! Joining them in the band are guitarist Constantine Kanakis and bassist Topher O’Meagher, with Tom Maclean as the album’s engineer, guest bassist and orchestral arranger.

Lisa Skinner has a superb vocal range – you can see/hear why she has sung opera previously – and on ‘Aradia’ she sounds like a female Rob Halford on the screaming vocal parts. She sings operatic vocals on this one as well making it a definite album highlight.

Tom Maclean earns his keep with the orchestral arrangements on ‘Echoes Of Existence’, a classic slow burner of a song. Suitably grandiose, both musically and vocally, one for Nightwish and Epica fans. As is ‘Cold Carnality’, which has plenty of musical twists and turns. Impressive bit of guitar on this one and in Constantine Kanakis they have themselves a real find. Nice on the solos – nothing overly flash – and solid riffing when required.

Sorceress Of Sin are going to be a band to see live once gigs get going again, as songs like the title track and the galloping metal of ‘Vixen Of Virtue’ are made for performing live. The latter recalls Helloween, not a bad band to be lumped in with methinks.

An assured and confident debut which I can see the band building upon and developing their own sound further as they progress. Get over to Bandcamp, grab a copy and set your speakers to eleven! ****

Album review: CREYE – II

CREYE – II

Frontiers [Release date 22.01.21]

Second album from Creye, a Swedish band founded by Andreas Gullstrand, now fronted by new vocalist, August Rauer.

Sweden has been the lightning rod for AOR and melodic rock since the eighties, delivering up aspiring band after aspiring band, many of them breaking through.

At its best, AOR gives you goose-pimples, ups your heart-rate and plays with your emotions. Try as they might, Creye don’t quite get there

There’s no question the album has moments of quality. At times ‘Find A Reason’ touches the magic of the late, great Gregg Fulkerson’s band, Blue Tears, fused together with chart aimed, boyband charm by contemporary programming tech. And ‘Siberia’ goes that one step further, adding in programmed keys buoyed up by huge backing vocals, something best learned nowadays from successful Swedish writer/producers Max Martin and Erik Martennsen. These songs have substance.

On some of the material, like ‘Can’t Stop What We Started’ and ‘War Of Love’, the artificiality of the programmed sound becomes part of the attraction. On other songs, like ‘Face To Face’ and ‘Lost Without You’, once you peel away the songs’ elegant clothing, they reveal only slender tunes and empty promises.

And yet the album opens so well. In its quieter moments ‘Broken Highway’ echoes Third Matinee, and there’s no better compliment. On its own, ‘Carry On’ is emblematic of all 21st century Euro AOR. The genre’s sharper edges have been sanded down and smoothed out, but arguably it’s not about challenging the formula here, it’s about executing with skill and taste. Fine qualities yes, but on their own, not enough.

Next time perhaps. ***

Album review: PHANTOM ELITE – Titanium

PHANTOM ELITE – Titanium

Frontiers Records (Release date 22/01/21)

On their second album now, Phantom Elite grew from the seeds of an HDK tour band, embracing Progressive Rock, Contemporary Metal and Symphonic Rock, evolving into what we see today. Fronted by Marina (Avantasia) La Torraca, with relative newcomers, Max Van Esch on guitar and bass, Joeri Warmerdam on drums, and keys by Koen Staam.

Produced and written by HDK/After Forever’s Sandor Gomman, Titanium is a huge leap forward from the debut, Wasteland (2018). There may be some echoes of HDK here and there, but not many. The range of styles they encompass is great if you enjoy variety, but not so much if you don’t like distractions.

Opening track ‘Conjure Rains’ sets out the band’s stall with a flourish, clearly going for the BPMs World Record. Van Esch and Warmerdam take off like the Shanghai Maglev, trailing La Toracca in their wake. And that’s a brilliantly clever piece of arranging, with the singer’s vocals constantly off the pace. And yet even with La Toracca marching to the beat of her own drum, the track is a cohesive, highly effective piece of music. If this sounds unusual, it’s because it is, and it works a treat.

It’s a tough act to follow, but some tracks get close:

‘The Race’ is a richly textured mix of metalwork – heavy, heaving riffs, crashing keys and guitar glissandos – framing those moments when La Torraca’s voice enters the fray, effortlessly expressing the melody and the lyrics.

The rushing harmonies of ‘Diamonds And Dark’, are the song’s focus, accelerating joyfully into a brief bridge, a key change and a towering hook, while ‘Glass Crown’s tight, taut, majestic riff does the heavy lifting. On both of these tracks, La Torraca’s satisfyingly unhurried vocal melody gives the material the kind of pop immediacy you don’t often find inhabiting Prog Metal, especially the contemporary variety.

Arguably, the episodic, seven and half minute title track is up there with that so impressive opener. It spills some gothic blood, as whispering voices urge La Torraca to rise in response to her demons. Meantime Van Escher’s guitar laces the music’s more reflective moments with bombastic cues, leading us back into the more explosive passages. Rinse and repeat. A satisfing programme.

Amanda Somerville and Stefan Rikken both contribute guest vocals to the album, but no question, La Torraca is the star here. ***1/2

Album review: WIG WAM – Never Say Die

Frontiers Records [Release date 22.01.21]

Much of today’s melodic rock’n'roll has degenerated into pro-tooled, prefabricated, flatpack assembly blandness. So it’s a genuine joy to hear Wigwam’s Never Say Die, their first release since reforming in 2020. It’s a relentless powerhouse of hard rock immediacy, capturing all the raw energy and punky vibe of their stage show. And still, throughout, they maintain an ever present air of detached cool, while cranking up the rhetoric and the guitars to deliver hulking rock songs – sweetened by insanely effortless hooks – like ‘Shadows Of Eternity’ and ‘Dirty Little Sectets’.

The opening instrumental, ‘The Second Crusade’, cleverly catches us off guard, taking us briefly into the world of Vangelis and Blade Runner. Then the stomping, riff heavy title track, framed by a tuneful wail and a crunching hook takes us straight back into the here and now.

It’s not a perfect album, few are. It runs on fumes at times. But that is more than compensated by the material’s engagingly melodic lyricism. When writing and recording songs like the poppy, soft centred ‘Silver Lining’ and the balladic ‘My Kaleidescope’, they ensure the warmth of the music gets just as much attention as the volcanic riffing and the punchy, pulsing rhythms.

The picks are hard to choose. Contenders are many. Throughout the album, Trond Holter’s guitar bites and stings; Age Sten Nilsen’s vocals emote confidence and conviction. They combine particularly impressively on ‘Hypnotised’. One launching it with a spring loaded, needle-in-the-red riff, the other spraying barbed lyrics around like an Uzi on auto. That said, ‘Call Of The Wild’ is impossible to avoid. You will keep going back to it.

Had Wigwam been part of the First Wave of Glam Metal, then in comparison, you might well have branded the music of fellow travellers, Motley Crue and Poison as grimy and transgressive. Wigwam play it straight, walking a high wire between hard rock, pop and metal, grabbing onto the best from all sides, getting the balance just right. Welcome back. ****

Album review: RIVERSIDE – Out Of Myself (Re-issue)

RIVERSIDE - Out Of Myself

Inside Out [Release Date: 12.02.21]

Riverside have developed, album upon album, into one of the finest progressive rock bands on the planet, with albums such as ‘Love, Fear And The Time Machine’, ‘Shrine Of New Generation Slaves’ and ‘Wasteland’ garnering top reviews from both fellow GRTR! reviewer Jason Ritchie and myself. Their latest album ‘Lost ’n’ Found – Live In Tilburg’ also hit top marks in late 2020.

And this is where it all began – ‘Out Of Myself’ was originally released in 2003 without much fanfare on an obscure label ‘The Laser’s Edge’ but started to be picked up by radio play and word of mouth.

That isn’t surprising as it is a magnificent piece of work.

For anybody who loves progressive rock, or is just a fan of blistering rock music cut with delicate acoustic passages, ‘Out Of Myself is an exempli gratia of everything that’s great about the genre.

The original line-up Mariusz Duda (bass and vocals), Piotr Kozieradzki (drums), Jacek Melnicki (keyboards – replaced on later albums by Michal Lapaj) and (the tragically late) Piotr Grudzinski (guitar) laid down a template here that, with the notable exception of the metal-in-extremis ‘Anno Domini High Definition’ album, has come to define everything that the band is about.

They announced themselves to the world with the superb twelve minutes of ‘The Same River’ – its soaring guitar and keys blended with metal riffage being a clarion call to listen-up.

The prog metal side of the band is exemplified by tracks such as ‘Out Of Myself’ (where even the dreaded ‘death growls’ show up, albeit briefly) and ‘Reality Dream’, whereas the softer, more acoustic aspect is epitomised by tracks such as ‘I Believe’, ‘In Two Minds’ and ‘Loose Heart’ which were precursors to classic Riverside tracks such as ‘Conceiving You’.

‘Loose Heart’ and ‘The Curtain Falls’, whose Camel-like intro develops into a smorgasbord of progressive rock loveliness, are particularly fine examples of Grudzinski’s stellar fretwork and just confirm what a miss he is, not just to Riverside, but to rock music in general.

For any band, this would be a fabulous album – its juxtaposition of the heaviest of riffs with pastoral acoustics is startling – but as a debut album it is simply astonishing.

Slightly disappointing though is the lack of any bonus material – it’s simply a re-issue of the original album (OK, remastered, but it would have been recorded digitally anyway), in a digipack cover with a free sticker – but if you already have the album and unless the 180g vinyl release floats your boat, move along – nothing to see here. Shame.

THE GALILEO 7 – Decayed

Bandcamp

Medway’s finest, fronted by Allan Crockford (ex-Prisoners), mark their tenth anniversary as a band with a limited edition album containing studio recordings of some of their favourite cover versions that have featured in their live set over the years.

Originally intended to be sold at gigs, Covid-19 put paid to that, but they decided to complete the album anyway and sell as a gesture of optimism and defiance (and because “there was nothing else to do!”) via their website. Their aim was to show that music is something that makes life better, and with “Decayed” they have certainly succeeded.

With lead vocals split between Crockford, Viv Bonsels and Mole, it makes for an eclectic listen as the band power their way through tracks spanning the ‘60s to the ‘80s, all in their unique psych-garage-rock-pop style. The majority of backing tracks were recorded in summer 2019 and were finished off at home in the months that followed.

They open with a fiery blast through the X-Ray Spex classic ‘The Day The World Turned Day-Glo’, which is neatly followed by the harmony-drenched Paul Revere and the Raiders nugget ‘Him or Me (What’s It Gonna Be)’.

Jack Lee is well known among power pop aficionados, and his ‘Paper Dolls’ features here – stemming from his time in The Nerves. Whilst hardly a household name, most music fans will actually know his songs from two hugely successful covers, ‘Hanging On The Telephone’ (Blondie) and ‘Come Back And Stay’ (Paul Young).

The Who’s mighty psych-era period is represented by two numbers, ‘Tattoo’ (from “Sell Out”) and ‘Glow Girl’. Both are sung by Viv, who stamps her own inimitable vocal style on them, the latter having been recorded remotely in lockdown – a terrific tour de force with everything bar the (virtual) kitchen sink.

There’s a furious and sizzling ‘Reynard the Fox’ (Julian Cope), and a wild take on Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd freakout ‘Astronomy Domine’. Mole has an unenviable task taking on a ‘Superlungs’ vocal, but makes a grand job of Terry Reid’s ‘Tinker Tailor’.

Shocking Blue’s ‘Send Me A Postcard’ and Mike Nesmith’s ‘Circle Sky’ are followed by one of the album highlights – Robyn Hitchcock’s ‘Kingdom of Love’, a Soft Boys gem which is perfectly suited for Allan’s voice.

This belting album of covers functions well on two counts. It is a hugely enjoyable listen in its own right, with the band sprinkling their magic on a varied range of songs. It also makes you want to go back and listen to (or discover for the first time) the original versions.

Existing fans will lap this up, but if you’re new to The Galileo 7 then perhaps start with this alongside 2019’s “There Is Only Now” and work your way backwards from there. ****

Allan Crockford interview

“Decayed” marks 10 years of The Galileo 7, but you’ve not been able to play any live shows to celebrate. How hard has this been (mentally and financially) on a personal level, when for most of your life you’ve played so many gigs each year?

The last we played was on February 7th 2020, supporting the Fuzztones at Under The Bridge. It was a good night and we got a great reception. It seems like a lifetime ago now. I’ve missed playing like every musician has, but so much has happened since then that the time has gone quickly. Apart from the obvious outside stress of the pandemic, I’ve also lost my dad in that time and there’s been ill-health in the family. Before all this happened I could take or leave gigging – it could be life-affirming or dispiriting, fantastic or boring… you never knew how it would turn out. I don’t think I will ever take it for granted again, if things ever get back to normal. At the moment it looks as far away as ever, and I’m not making any optimistic assumptions yet.

FInancially it’s not a concern as we never make any money out of it. It’s purely a serious hobby that at best pays for itself, at worst costs you a shedload of unrecoupable expenses! We all have ‘proper’ jobs that make playing in a band that doesn’t make any money possible!

You’ve worked out how to record remotely as a band during the pandemic. What has this involved from a technical point of view, and how have you found it in comparison to being in the same room?

It’s complicated, but it’s not as if we haven’t got time to think about it. The way it works is that I make a demo of the song without drums and then send it to Mole. He records himself playing drums along to the demo and sends his drum track back. Ordinarily I would be able to drop his drum track straight into the existing session on the computer and carry on. It’s complicated by the fact that Mole’s studio is analogue and he records initially on tape and then transfers it to the digital realm to send it to me. It means that we get the wonderful tape compression from the analogue bit of the process, but it also means that we get enough tape drift to put the drums out of sync with the digitally recorded demo. It doesn’t take much drift to mean that I have to re-record my parts to fit with the drums. I’ve got used to it now, but it does add a bit of time and effort to the process. Once I’ve done that I send the new version of the song to Paul for the bass part, and then me and Viv will finish the keyboards and vocals.

It’s nothing like being in the same room, because we can’t bounce ideas round and change the arrangement or let the dynamics emerge between ourselves. Playing a new song as a band beds the song in and can change the feel completely, which is what we’ve done for the last few years. Doing it this way is almost a throwback to the early days of the band when I would record a complete demo and the others would just learn the parts I’d played.

I’ve really enjoyed the songs and videos that you and Viv have recorded and posted on YouTube during lockdown. It looks like you had quite a bit of creative fun doing these…

The lockdown covers have been a lifeline and a great distraction. Obviously we’ve been recording music as a band as well, but doing somewhat off-the-wall covers with Viv has been a challenge and fun at the same time. I’ve enjoyed the ones that are outside our normal influences, like songs by John Denver and The Settlers. They’re not exactly our normal influences by any stretch, but bending the songs to our will has been so enjoyable, and watching our friends and fellow musicians doing the same has made the theme nights one of the few good bits about this whole experience. Viv and I are going to collect all our efforts so far and release them as an album as soon as we can. It’ll be Volume 1, but we’re hoping that we don’t need to release Volume 2… although we might carry on doing it even when we do get back to something like normal.

Have you been writing any new material and, if so, when do you anticipate starting work on a new album?

I’ve written 5 or 6 new songs during this period and made demos. We’re working our way through each one and gradually turning them into band songs. It’s a long process though, and I’ve been somewhat distracted from writing new songs because knocking out cover versions is so much easier…

It’s great to hear a Jack Lee song on “Decayed” as I’ve long been an admirer of his work. How easy was it to decide which songs to record, and do you have any particular favourites?

The Jack Lee song (‘Paper Dolls’) was chosen by Mole, as he loves The Nerves, particularly that EP. Our version was recorded a few years ago and kind of forgotten, but when we realised that we were a couple of songs short for the ‘Decayed’ album and there was no chance of getting together in time to get other songs recorded, I dug up this version and remixed it. It was recorded by the Mark 2 line-up of the band before Mole had moved from bass to drums. All of the songs on the album had been played live by us at gigs at one time or another, so the remit was to record decent versions of those for the anniversary album. We’d done seven of them last year, but never got a chance to get back together to record the other three. Luckily we had these old versions in the archives and they sounded much better than we remembered at the time. I think they fit perfectly with the newer recordings.

As if musicians didn’t have enough to deal with in lockdown, there will now be the post-Brexit challenges of playing outside of the UK when live shows eventually return. Have you got pending bookings on the horizon, and are you anticipating that it will still be financially and logistically viable for you to play in Europe?

Absolutely nothing booked – I doubt if anyone at our sort of DIY level has! I have no idea what the future holds for playing abroad. For me, and pretty much everyone I know, Brexit is a huge mistake, based on lies and misrepresentation. We will see the consequences played out over the next few years, and I doubt if I will change my mind. I remember the days of playing outside of the UK before the borders became transparent, and customs were a massive pain in the arse – and pretty scary at times. It was never easy to cover costs, and it’s even less likely now. I find it difficult to contemplate and fully understand the way the country has taken such a turn for the worse.

And what about UK shows? I’m anticipating that the atmosphere at future live shows will be even better than before, with audiences and bands alike appreciating even more what they’ve missed during such a difficult time

Let’s hope we get the chance to find out! It’s difficult to imagine playing to crowds now, when we’re deep into the worst part of the pandemic. Mass gatherings in small sweaty rooms seem impossible, and that’s where rock’n’roll has always thrived. I hope we get the chance to play, and to be in an audience watching other bands too. I’m trying not to think about it at the moment… but yes, if it does I think both audiences and bands will be much more appreciative of each other in the future!

EP review: RAY FENWICK – Going Large

Ray Fenwick “goes large” in this promotional audio for the new EP (Singsong Music) (11:29)

A Ray Fenwick interview special will be broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio on Sunday 14 February 18:00 GMT.

RAY FENWICK - Going Large

Singsong Music [Release date 15.01.21] www.rayfenwick.com

Ray Fenwick is perhaps best known for lending his name to any number of album/single credits as a session player.  But he’s also had a varied and colourful history in bands such as Spencer Davis Group,  The Ian Gillan Band, Fancy and the Forcefield project with the likes of Cozy Powell and Graham Bonnet.  In fact, this year Ray celebrates 60 years in the music business, an amazing achievement.

And what better way than to bring the story up to date with five tracks that sum up his musical modus operandi?  Fine playing, production and composition.  The title of ‘Going Large’ was inspired by a random comment from a student he taught at Boston College in Lincolnshire and is a pulsating workout that fuses jazz rock and funk.

‘Tam Tam’ is a perfect late night listen, a smooth jazz piece with ear candy hooks throughout.

‘Firepower 44′ was co-written with another guitarist Will Thomson and is widescreen in execution whilst the bustling ‘Trade Winds’ and pneumatic ‘Blue Jays’ complete an EP of unfettered funk.

It’s going to be a busy year for our guitar hero.  A Fancy box set is imminent and spring will see a 3-CD anthology celebrating his diamond jubilee.  Hats off to Ray. *****

Quick plays: AUTUMN’S CHILD, ALABAMA SLIM, LONELY THE BRAVE

AUTUMN’S CHILD - Angel’s Gate

AUTUMN’S CHILD Angel’s Gate AOR Heaven [Release date 26.02.21]

Mikael Erlandsson used to release albums like clockwork (every January) with Last Autumn’s Dream and now his new band Autumn’s Child are back with album number two, a year after the debut release. Joining Erlandsson again are Jona Tee (H.E.A.T.), Robban Bäck (Mustach, ex-Eclipse), Pontus Akesson (Moon Safari) and Claes Andreasson (Heartbreak Radio), who also produced this album.

It is all suitably melodic, with a few stand out choruses like on ‘Aquarius Sky’, but it does begin to all blend into one after a couple of listens. That said, ‘Don’t Say It’s Love’ with its heavy sue of keys and up tempo beat is one for fans of the current wave of Scandi bands who like a bit of synth and dance in their music. There is a big, soaring ballad ‘A Tear From The Sky’, a song which could garner further airplay for the album.

Not quite as good as the debut and it lacks any real stand out tunes to bring the listener back again for repeated listens. Still, it is always good to hear Mikael Erlandsson singing so worth a listen just or that fact alone! ***

ALABAMA SLIM - The Parlor

ALABAMA SLIM The Parlor Cornelius Chapel [Release date 29.01.21]

Alabama Slim was born Milton Frazier in Vance, Alabama in 1939. Slim fell in love with the blues of Bill Broonzy and Lightnin’ Hopkins, and that’s where the journey began for the always dapper bluesman, who was poised for a late-in-life breakout in 2020 with a scheduled appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which sadly bit the dust in the pandemic.

The album itself was recorded back in 2019 as a three piece of Slim, Little Freddie King, and drummer Ardie Dean. The session took merely four hours with Reginald Nicholas at the board and Dean in the producer’s chair. Drive-By Trucker’s Matt Patton added his bass parts afterwards with Jimbo Mathus adding piano and organ to embellish the sound when required.

No frills blues on here, from the slow shuffle on ‘Rob Me Without A Gun’ (the guitar solo is sublime, backed by snatches of organ and the rock steady backbeat) through to ‘Rock Me Baby’ which sees the tempo rising. For those after a blues meets rock n roll shuffle ‘Rock With Me Momma’ hits the spot.

One of the few blues elder statesmen still playing and performing, and one who came into recording the blues late on in his life. Those after a traditional blues fix similar to that of John Lee Hooker need look no further. ***1/2

LONELY THE BRAVE The Hope List Easy Life Records [Release date 22.01.21]

The band’s follow up to 2016′s ‘Things Will Matter’, which went to no.1 on the Rock Charts here in the UK and saw the band tour with and support the likes of Deftones, Biffy Clyro and Bruce Springsteen. In 2018 vocalist David Jakes left the band and in came Jack Bennett.

The album was finished during the first lockdown last year, with members of the band based in West Yorkshire, Bristol and Cambridgeshire, two of whom were working – and continue to work – for the NHS on the frontline during the ongoing pandemic.

They go for the big anthems on ‘Bound’ and ‘Chasing Knives’ – you can see why they have supported the likes of Biffy Clyro, another arena anthem friendly band. ‘Something I Said’ is more reflective, which shows the band have various strings to their musical bow.

Not a band I was aware of before listening to this album so I can’t comment on how a change of vocalist has impacted the band, however, for a bit of anthemic modern rock look no further. ***1/2

THE BEAUTY OF GEMINA Skeleton TBOG Music

Ninth studio album by this dark and brooding electronic alternative rock band. Led by Michael Sele, this Swiss band have been recording since 2006 and while the albums have been light or dark, they’ve always been atmospheric, mixing acoustic guitar with electronics and alternative rock touches. Here, from the opening track, there’s some strong goth rock influences, sounding like an electronic Mission or early cult; Imagine a pop synth duo covering Black Sabbath’s Volume 4 or Sabotage.

The second track Naked has some nice acoustic touches, but the vocals keep that dark edge, and in places have a hint of a downbeat or depressed Chris Rea. The album moves seamlessly, and tracks like Maybe God Knows mix new wave with acoustic blues and look at one’s mortality. And with a brush with death (heart surgery) and the current Covid crisis, this album has the moods to match but also the questions to ask (check out Friends Of Mine).

The mid paced Where Has It All Gone has a nice rhythm laid back alternative feel. On Dark Suzanne the vocals take on a Johnny Cash / Ian Astbury feel, quite a heavy bass line, again quite dark.

Quite atmospheric, dark, some well constructed songs, lots of questions to ask, but in places it does seem to just drift and not something to listen to if you need uplifting. ***

Album review: JAMIE’S GUNS – Jamie’s Guns

JAMIE'S GUNS - Jamie's Guns

I picked this album up as Jamie’s Guns had shared it on NWOCR Facebook group, I had a half listen while I was working, to the initial track “Whiplash”, stopped what I was doing, immediately played the album in its entirety and sat back soaking up the gravelly blues rock sound.

It was that good, I played it again, straight off and I’ve been listening to it every day since. The album has depth and character that belies the fact it’s a debut, if you like a touch of Springsteen and The Gaslight Anthem, you are in for a treat. In fact, just try it!

I got in touch with Cameron to ask him about the band and the album, I was pretty much blown away by his response,

“This first album was recorded by myself and Greg Wilson at Texas Tech University’s Crossroads Studios. I have played piano my whole life and I taught myself drums, acoustic guitar and bass. I recorded each of these parts for the album and Greg played all of the electric guitar. The bass part is shared depending on who does lead vocals.”

Reminiscent of Prince when he started out, doing everything himself and overlaying the parts, this album delivers accomplished musicianship, clever lyrics that are poignant and relevant to the times. I can’t wait to see how this band develops.

We delve a little deeper and I establish that the role of lead vocals and bass has also being split between Cameron and Greg, with Cameron singing lead vocals on ‘Whiplash’, ‘Heartshot’, ‘She Don’t Want Me’ and the single ‘End of the Road’, with Greg singing lead vocals on the remaining tracks on the album, including ‘Cocaine Eye’s and the closing track ‘Pray for Rain’.

My favourite tracks? Well, it was the opening track, ‘Whiplash’ that initially grabbed my attention but I’d pick ‘She Don’t Want Me’, ‘Heartshot’  and ‘Cocaine Eyes’ to showcase the band as they are so different in style and delivery, to be honest if you aren’t foot tapping and singing along after a couple of listens, I’ll be amazed.

What a debut album – my optimism about the future of rock music increases every time I happen across a new band, that’s doing something a little different to the mainstream, that is interesting musically and is brave enough to launch their debut album in the midst of a global pandemic.

This is a class debut album, with real character and depth, I highly recommend you give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. Happily, despite setbacks to the release of their debut due to Covid-19, they are already in the process of recording their second album and aiming for release later this year. Keep me posted, I’ll be awaiting that release with anticipation! ****

Album review: MO FOSTER & FRIENDS – In Concert

Mo Foster chatted to David Randall for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio about his career, illustrated with a selection of session and solo tracks.  First broadcast 31 January 2021.

MO FOSTER & FRIENDS - In Concert

Right Track Records [Release date 21.03.21]

Mo Foster is best known for lending his bass talents to any number of other artists’ works, including Jeff Beck and Phil Collins.  More recently, prior to Lockdown, Mo was touring his current band and fortunately they recorded a gig in London late in 2019.  This forms the basis of the album, with one track ‘Chickens’ recorded “remotely” as a result of the pandemic.

The album concept came about in the face of adversity.  Foster had gathered a group of musicians to play at the launch of Linda Hoyle’s solo album.  Linda backed out a couple of weeks before the gig due to illness and so it left Foster with a bunch of musicians and no vocalist.

Three tracks are taken from the collective’s very first gig with no prior rehearsal including one of the album highlights ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ (made popular by Miles Davis).  This sets the template with Foster’s bass holding everything into a solid groove and reminding a little of Herbie Hancock’s jazz fusion sorties at the turn of the 1960s.  Miles is also referenced on the Porgy & Bess tune ‘Gone Gone Gone’ whilst his one-time acolyte Wayne Shorter features with ‘Footprints’.

‘Mo Foster & Friends In Concert’ is really a trip through Foster’s jazz influences, especially, er, “fostered” during sorties to Ronnie Scotts in the late 1960s both as a punter and as a player.  He subsequently toured with the great jazz composer (and Miles collaborator) Gil Evans – celebrated here with ‘The Pan Piper’ and a swinging ‘Gone’ – and has always kept a soft spot for the jazz standards.

Sometimes jazz can be a little cerebral but Foster, always with an ear for melody, has picked the more accessible pieces for this collection.  One of his bass heroes Jaco Pastorious is recalled on ‘Three Views Of A Secret’ whilst ‘Some Echoes’ and ‘And On The Third Day’ pay tribute to Mike Gibbs.  Alan Toussaint’s ‘On Your Way Down’ provides a nice, and welcome, slice of R&B.

The band he has gathered around him are amongst the very best on the jazz circuit including his long standing right hand man, guitarist Ray Russell, Chris Biscoe on saxes, Jim Watson (keyboards), Nic France (drums) and Corrina Silvester (percussion).

Foster allows the indulgence of his own composition ‘Oh No’ which features Russell’s consistently impressive guitaring (and guest Frank Ricotti on percussion) whilst ‘Who’s There?’ connects with  Mo’s early jazz fusion band Affinity whose vocalist was … Linda Hoyle.

It was when playing with Affinity at Ronnie Scotts, supporting the Gary Burton Quartet, that Mo first heard the final track – ‘Chickens’ – then with bassist Steve Swallow who has subsequerntly hailed this as the definitive version.

In fact it’s the homespun compositions that provide standouts with ‘So Far Away’ reminding me that it was originally recorded by Jeff Beck and then appeared on a Gary Moore live album.  Ray Russell provides the Beck-esque phrasing on this version.

This is a great album to allay any misconceptions about jazz.  Beautifully played and produced, an album to be savoured in half light and with a good Bourbon.  ****

EP review: THE LICKERISH QUARTET – Threesome Vol. 2

THE LICKERISH QUARTET – Threesome Vol. 2

Stranger Danger [Release date 15.01.21]

The Lickerish Quartet return with their second four song EP. The band comprise ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Tim Smith and Eric Dover and like the much missed Jellyfish, they carry on that band’s love of quirky pop rock.

Tim Smith says the EP “finds our threesome in fine form, with four new songs to get you through Covid times and beyond!”

‘Snollygooster Goon’ had been released as a single ahead of the EP’s release. You got to love the band’s song titles! A neat piece of pop rock eclipsed for me by ‘The Dream That Took Me Over’, a song that recalls ELO’s late 70’s disco sound. To be fair there is not one duff song on the EP.

‘Do You Feel Better?’ is a joyful tune, driven along by piano and a simple, yet precise drumbeat. Add in harmony vocals, a few handclaps and you’re onto a winner. ‘Sovereignty Blues’ highlights how successful the Lickerish Quartet are at mixing familiar sounds – in this case late 60′s pop with a tip of the hat to the Beach Boys – adding in their own pop magic. Marvellous.

Sweet pop rock melodies on the outside with sharp, tangy lyrics contained within. A perfect pick me up for the start of the year and beyond. ****
