Album review: HENRIK FREISCHLADER – Missing Pieces

Henrik Freischlader - Missing Pieces

Cable Car Records [Release date 04.12.20]

Henrik Freischlader returns with ‘Missing Pieces’ another exquisitely woven blues album full of restrained playing, whispered sprechgesang and deep blues.

The album title could almost refer to his own artistry, which though full of musical excellence and emotional veracity doesn’t quite have the lyrical depth to make this album any better or worse than his previous releases.

And that’s a shame because ‘Missing Pieces’ is a blues album with a difference. From the lush art work – including Caroline Sandmayer’s thematic frontispiece which sets out the conflicting images of nature, the metropolis and money – to the imaginative arty lyric cards, complete with individual evocative photos, this is an ambitious blues album which aims high, but doesn’t quite achieve its lofty goals.

It’s a contemporary blues album shot through with an essential aesthetic that extends from the art work to the layered sound. The album is infused with real feel, tasteful playing, fine band interplay, a sprinkle of relationship songs, and is interwoven with a sense of spiritual enquiry that pushes Freischlader into the realms of the philosophical.

It’s rare for a blues album to embrace such thoughtful introspection, but though the lyrics are imaginative in their use of metaphor and imagery, they don’t always make clear what it is he’s trying to say.

There are too many moments when he employs cool sounding couplets without delivering clarity of meaning. For example, on ‘Let The People Be Free’  his overarching theme is clear, but not so his detail: “Free from the lies of your shiny disguise – Free – free from your dirty old game of pride – Free – free from your spell of pressure and fear – Free – free from the danger to disappear.”

The track has a claustrophobic feel which he ruptures with an intense guitar break that rises, hovers and then glides above the track as a clever extension of his limited vocal style.
Better still, the repeated hook makes sure the song lingers long in the memory.

The Zen like eclectic lyrics of ‘New Beginning’ are full of integrity, but are clumsy and as a result don’t quite resonate. In fairness, this may have something to do with a translation from German to English: “Don’t you leave your chances chanceless. You will never wish for more. Than what’s going on inside your window. When you’re walking through that open door.”

No matter, as he sings: “Every ending is a new beginning,” he cleverly demonstrates that by combining his sprechgesang with subtle guitar textures he can make an emotional impact.

He further colours the song with a lush guitar tone and breaks the self imposed tension with a full blown solo illuminated by his weeping tone.

He’s much better when he cleverly combines a stream of consciousness scat-into-rap approach on an intricate arrangements such as  the anthemic ‘Power To The Peaceful’.
It’s a song that calls for self-reflection and honest decision making, as he leans into a majestic solo while ably supported by his band. And if his lyrical mystification means that one part of a couplet isn’t necessarily a corollary of the other, as on: “Money makes the world go round, time is lost and can’t be found,” he’s at least inviting us to share an admirable sentiment in which his blues is a catalyst for the search for a deeper understanding and thematic building blocks.

Quite often the key to his core meaning is simply to be found in the song titles themselves. On ‘Grown Up’ he explores the option of being able to remain creatively free and evolve, while ‘One And One Is One’ is a rallying call for idealists and staying true to yourself.
Then there’s the self explanatory ‘Justice Blues’, which taken together with the other two songs feels as if they are part of an exhortation to liberate the soul or cleanse the psyche.

The jazzier self-empowerment title track features a staccato intro and cleverly delivered jagged vocals, while on ‘It Ain’t Funky’ he finds room to stretch out with Roman Babik on keyboards and Marco Zügner on sax, while adding his own touch of lyrical humour: “If I didn’t feel just like I feel today, tomorrow, I would have nothing new to say.”

Significantly, this track sounds like something the band might have conjured up in the rehearsal room, which on reflection might explain the uneasy juxtaposition between his lyrical ambitions and live in the studio vibe.

‘Missing Pieces’ is a slow burner on which Freischlader lights the touch paper, smoulders  with intent, but his frequently nuanced utopian vision is never clear enough to fan the flames.

He approaches everything with broad bush strokes, generalised concepts and luscious grooves which glue everything together, but only rarely do the lyrics and music fit together seamlessly.

‘Missing Pieces’ is an introspective and understated album that longtime fans might indeed expect. It frustratingly offers only partial glimpses of Henrik own playing ability. And while he clearly enjoys his role as an integral band member, his notion of serving the song is sometimes taken too literally. Sure his best song percolate and flow nicely, but they too often fall short of the bigger picture that he consistently alludes to in his lyrics.

He does offer greater concision on the penultimate track, the relationship song ‘We Used To Be Happy’, “You said that you loved me , and i love you, too but you’re there without me , and I’m without you.”

He adds a short defining solo with clipped full toned notes that make an emotional connection either side of his heartfelt vocal on an album highlight.

Indeed it feels as if the previous tracks have led him on a journey to this very point. He pours out his heart and soul in a song where nothing is hurried or rushed and the emphasis is wholly on feel.

Better still, he provides an upbeat finish with a jazzy appendage and his best lyrics on the intricately woven ‘Walking In The Shadows Of The Spotlight’.  He cleverly uses contrast, an alliterative feel and a breathless delivery, flanked by a sinewy guitar break and sax stabs to round off a thoughtful album with a flourish.

‘Missing Pieces’ isn’t quite the defining piece in Henrik Freischlader’s musical jigsaw, it’s too understated for that, but in an age of formulaic product and cliched subject matter, there will always be room for a heartfelt album like this. ***½

Album review: VOODOO CIRCLE – Locked & Loaded

VOODDO CIRCLE - Locked & Loaded

AFM Records [Release date 15.01.21]

Locked & Loaded is Voodoo Circle’s love letter to Led Zeppelin and Whitesnake.

We should all be delighted that Alex Beyrodt got the band back together again. The classic line up, we mean. The team that recorded Broken Heart Syndrome in 2011. Beyrodt, Mat Sinner, David Readman and Markus Kullman. The one where all the pieces fit.

And they’re having fun, enjoying every moment. Even the video trailer – snakes, skulls and scantily dressed women – is old school. It’s infectious. It’s lit up with a kind of knowing intensity. The kind that takes form in the studio, when really great musicians work with other really great musicians.

And before you realise, it reaches out from behind the tongue in cheek posturing and throwing of heavy metal/hard rock shapes, to tattoo some indelible hard rock lightning onto our subconscious.

‘Devil With An Angel Smile’ folds in some densely packed, T Ride type vocal chanting into the perfect commerciality of Whitesnake styled hard rock. The title track belies it’s cliched title by peppering Beyrodt’s ironclad riffolla with hip hop vocal rhythms, and it works a treat.

And it’s so entertaining. The songwriting is strong – ‘Wasting Time’ and ‘Flesh And Blood’ are as good as anything Beyrodt has previously written – and the performances are superb – vocalist, David Readman clearly had carte blanche to project his spot-on Coverdale-isms. His tongue is so firmly in his cheek on the superb ballad, ‘Eyes Full Of Tears’ that you can see it from outer space. And yet, derivative or not, the song’s brooding and intense sense of drama goes beyond pastiche, carried by Readman’s chest swelling self belief, transforming it into an unquestionable album higlight.

Beyrodt brought in Jacob Hansen, the Danish “Godfather Of Sound” to mix and master the album. Hansen captures the analogue warmth and indeed the underrated sonic clarity of many hard rock recordings of the genre’s heyday. Like other masters of the trade, he knows that you do nothing for show and everything for effect. ****

Album review: BLUE OYSTER CULT – Live albums

BLUE OYSTER CULT - Live At Rock Of Ages Festival 2016

Frontiers Records [Release date 04.12.20]

Even when hearing familiar Blue Oyster Cult material performed live, you are reminded of just how different they are to all in their peer group.

These two live recordings are densely packed with reasons that reinforce the claim, showcasing the effortless, distinctive style of the band. They come in the usual variety of formats, CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

Live At The Rock Of Ages, Summer Open Air Festival was recorded at the 2016 iteration of the event in Seebronn, Germany.

On stage in Seebronn they leaned hard into their seventies’ albums. The sound of the crowd initially seems detached from the music being played onstage. But it’s just a matter of tuning in, by third track, ‘Od’d On Life Itself’, the mix is good, the rhythm section has been brought up and is chiming sweetly and loudly with Dharma and Bloom’s cultured guitar sound. Bloom has found his voice and we’re loving the gig.

The picks would first be an elongated ‘Then Came The Last Days Of May’. Eric Bloom’s scorched voice allows for the song to sound as bruised and battered as a 45 year old rock song should, with Buck Darma’s solo axework, very detailed, very musical, very emotional, stretching the song to a satisfying ten minutes. And a tight, tight, red hot version of the breezily insistent, ‘Burnin For You’, and of course the band’s timeless rock classics, ‘Godzilla’ and ‘…The Reaper’ are here too.

BLUE OYSTER CULT - A Long Day's Night

Fourteen years earlier, A Long Days Night was recorded on stage in Chicago, USA, during the summer solstice.

What’s remarkable about the recording is this: across 13 cuts you never once step into the soft, yielding quicksand of we’re-only-doing-it-for-the-money. Everyone of these live tracks is solidly grounded in performances that always opt for the perfect fit. They hit their stride quickly and impressively, combining the athletic grace of a marathon runner with the explosive energy of an olympic sprinter.

And perhaps surprisingly, given this album is a much “older” recording, the band include several tracks from the eighties’ albums in their set. Forged in the fires of endless touring, the live version of ‘Perfect Water’ comes alive on stage. Written by Dharma and author, Jim Carroll, it was probably the most notable track on the band’s poorly received Club Ninja album. Similarly with ‘Lips In The Hills’, a bluesy, punchy, 4 and and a half minute soundscape co-written with by well known author, Richard Melzer, who collaborated with band several times over the years.

It’s well worth observing that the recording’s 18 year old audio has been sympathetically restored and remastered on this live recording. Add to that the bonus band and fan interviews and you have a package worthy of the band’s reputation.

Album review: EDENBRIDGE – The Chronicles of Eden Part 2

EDENBRIDGE – The Chronicles of Eden Part 2

SPV/Steamhammer [Release date 15.01.21]

Second best of from symphonic metal band Edenbridge, with this volume drawn from their studio albums 5-10. Edenbridge, who have been around now for over twenty years, revolve around original members vocalist Sabine Edelsbacher and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Arne “Lanvall” Stockhammer.

Like the first part of The Chronicles of Eden the track listing was decided by fans voting for their favourite tracks of each album. As Lanvall commented “The voting was not a major surprise and is more or less identical to the songs, we would also have chosen. Therefore 4 tracks of each album could be covered along with some older all out of print bonus tracks.”

For existing fans there are two new recorded acoustic versions, ‘Higher’ and ‘Paramount’, plus the Easter Version 2020 of ‘Dynamind’, re-recorded by Sabine Edelsbacher adding a jazzy sound to the proceedings.

What sets this band apart is the melodies come first and foremost, whether they are in full metal mode on ‘Higher’ and ‘Bon Voyage Vagabond’ or going into a mix of metal and pomp on ‘The Bonding’. With Threshold’s Karl Groom handling mixing you know it will have a crisp, crunch on the guitar riffs. Also the multi-talented Robby Valentine adds has backing vocals to many of the band’s songs and use full orchestras wherever possibly, none of that cheap synth string section for this lot!

The big guns of the symphonic metal scene maybe Nightwish, Within Temptation and Evanescence, however, Edenbridge could easily challenge these bands as they have the songs and a powerful, melodic vocalist in Sabine Edelsbacher. If you have yet to try Edenbridge this album and part 1 are an ideal starting point to the wonderful world of symphonic metal treats that await. ****

EP review: OBSESA – Let In The Light

OBSESA - Let In The Light

OBSESA [Release date 26.12.20]

Obsesa formed in 2017 in Bury St Edmunds (Vocals/Guitar: Jason Smith, Guitar: Adam Ingram, Bass: Matt Cooper, Drums: Pete Hutchins) have come out swinging and bludgeoning on their debut ep ‘Let In The Light’.

Three tracks that brutally kick 2020 square in the fork! There is nothing subtle here, just an old school sonic assault for those that like their metal doomy, gloomy, dirty and bloody loud.

The first track ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ is a suitable grinding growling description of Hieronymus Bosch’s famous triptych oil painting from between 1490 and 1510 which portrays both the paradise of Eden and the hell of the Last Judgement. Jason Smith snarls and growls over descriptions of what this wonderful work of art entails, it is very heavy but the production by Dave Vickers is clean, crisp and not muddled.

‘Wasp Coffin’ arrives in an eerie, other worldly manner with something growling into the night over swirling winds before the riff kicks in and a Hetfield like “Yeeeeeeeeeaaaahhhh” and headbanging ensues. It reminds me of Metallica at their most brutal mixed in with Machine Head and a touch of Down, the riffs are like Tony Iommi on speed with frantic drums from Peter Hutchins, it is his drumming that ushers in track 3 ‘The More You Destroy’. Subtle it is not; the riffing is full tilt with an incredible tight rhythm section, dare I say the delivery is almost punk like. When we get let out of Tier 13 or whatever Covid-19 restriction we are finally released from, expect sore necks and bruised arms in wherever the mosh pit they unleash this fury into.

Journey and Foreigner this is not, it is not going to make you break social distancing by teasing your hair, putting on spandex and cruising the Sunset Strip but what it will do is let you unleash all that pent up frustration and anger! Play it loud, play it proud, 14 minutes 30 seconds of breakneck speed metal and roll-on album no 1. A decent debut indeed. ****1/2

Album review: THE RODS – Expanded Remasters

THE RODS - In The Raw

In The Raw, The Rods Live, Let Them Eat Metal

Rock Candy’s remastered & reissued programme often serves to bring a deserving band (and album) to a new audience. The Rods are the perfect example.

Their eighties’ albums were in the wrong place at the right time, handicapped by inexperienced labels and dragged down by chaotic marketing. None moreso than 1983′s In The Raw. It was a real opportunity lost, as the band used the writing and recording process to slough off the remains of their seventies’ musical skin, and stepped confidently into the eighties.

The band’s meat and 2 veg heavy metal was shorn even of anything that looked like it might want to be a frill. The unencumbered dark notes and heavy metal clamour of

‘Hurricane’ and ‘Witches Brew’ bear this out. Sleek, targeted weapons, propelled by ironclad riffs and laser guided vocals.

David “The Rock” Feinstein handled most of the singing. Drummer Carl Canedy and bassist Garry Bordonaro take the lead on ‘Hot City’ and ‘Evil Woman’ respectively. Apart from the occasionally unfocused piece of songwriting, it was a power trio without a weakness.

Some fabulous material among the 5 bonus tracks here. Most notably a ten minute live tribute, ‘A Whole Lotta Led’, and a tastefully titled instrumental, ‘In Your Panties’.

THE RODS - Live

The intensity of The Rods’ live performance is an amazing thing. The Rods Live was recorded on their 1983 tour of the UK with blood brothers, Motorhead. Less a metal band, more a force of nature, they blasted out a veritable cacophany of blissfully thunderous heavy metal, laden with hulking bruisers like ‘I Live For Rock’n'Roll’, ‘Born To Rock’ and ‘Speed Demon’.

They were never a band to short change their fans by feeding them material already bitten off and digested from previous albums. This is an existential live recording, bathed in sweat, full of new material, presented with all the glorious rawness, realism and real talent that this band had in spades.

Again thanks to short sighted label inaction, it barely saw the light of day.

Never mind the cover (so many album covers in the eighties were either outrageously sexist or ridiculously banal), the band’s subsequent album, Let Them Eat Metal was something of a dissapointment. Hurriedly written and hurriedly recorded, you would swear this was a band going through the motions or meeting a contract obligation. The pneumatically powered riffs, motorised rhythms and razor clawed solos just aren’t enough. Previous albums have led us to expect more.

Cliched titles like ‘I’m A Rocker’, ‘She’s So Tight’, ‘She’s Such A Bitch’ give the game away. And yet, songs such as ‘Nuclear Skies’ and ‘White Lightning’ show there’s still a light on, and that the band’s songwriting ability didn’t die from exhaustion after their Motorhead tour. There just aren’t enough songs of that calibre here.

The five bonus tracks help alleviate the gloom, especially the live tracks, which is where the band excel, the raw and raucous ‘Evil Woman’ and ‘Too Hot To Stop’ are worthy additions. You can almost taste the sweat as it drips from the gantry overhead.

Album review: TED & MAJELLA – Divine Timing (Ted Turner, ex-Wishbone Ash)

TED & MAJELLA - Divine Timing

www.tedturnerandmajella.com [Release date 21.12.20]

Ted Turner is best known as the one time original guitar slinger in Wishbone Ash with whom he remained until 1974 and then on and off until 1994.

Ted reappeared in 2018 together with his partner Majella and released an essentially chill-out collection of tunes, evidently inspired by their own love for both each other and the wider environment in general.  Two years later, Lockdown and pandemic have given more reasons to become reflective and reassess our values.  Ted & Majella are right there with us.

If it all smacks a bit of modern day Hippie-dom, remember Turner has always had a head for the wider global issues and after his first spell with Ash took himself off around the world to work things out for himself.

The grooves continue here punctuated by Turner’s bluesy guitar tones and enhanced by Majella’s vocals.  ‘Twin Soul’ features the two vocalising in what is an innocuous pop song that could have been written at any time since the 1960s, ditto ‘Wild Is The New Safe’, whilst ‘Like Never Before’ returns to the more spiritual and introspective themes perfectly in tune with 2020.

The closer ‘Flow’ perhaps best sums up their brand of “new age soul” and whilst the soft soulful grooves are persistent throughout it’s the song ‘Gone Too Far’  that provides excellent contrast, a fleeting respite maybe, but a damn good one.

If listeners are expecting another ‘The King Will Come’ they will be disappointed, Ted has mellowed and it ain’t 1972.

So go online, order the patchouli oil, dig out the bong (or, perhaps more realistically, a favourite tipple), and slip into unalloyed contemplative bliss. Ted & Majella provide the perfect soundtrack.  ***1/2

Album review: HUMBLE PIE – The Atlanta Years

HUMBLE PIE - The Atlanta Years

Store For Music [Release date 11.12.20]

Steve Marriott is best remembered in the UK as the front man for the Small Faces . Also rememberd by many as Britain’s best blue eyed soul singer, and not least for his songwriting partnership with Ronnie Lane. Don’t forget all those classic hit singles and the wonderful Number One album “Ogdens Nut Gone Flake”.

In the USA, on the other hand, Humble Pie left an indelible mark across countless headlining tours, playing everywhere from Madison Square Gardens to Shea Stadium. Peter Frampton left the band and continued his journey to the best selling live album of all time, while Marriott perfected a unique fusion between rock, blues and soul via Humble Pie’s “soul revue” with The Blackberries, the cream of LA Session singers who had worked with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Barbra Streisand.

However, this two CD re-release is Steve Marriott solo – both studio and live recordings. It doesn’t actually have anything to do with Humble Pie, except as a reminder of unscrupulous times where posters and billings would appear with the Humble Pie title, as promoters tried to sell more tickets by doing this.

However, what matters is the music – which is exceptional.

Culled together from various recording sessions at Pyramid Eye studio in Cincinnati, and Capricorn studio in Macon Georgia, the studio tracks offer a glimpse of the variety and depth of Steve’s solo work. Perhaps more laidback than most would expect, it still packs one hell of a bite – as his rendition of Brenda Lee’s “Sweet Nuthins” will testify. “Ain’t You Glad New York Can’t Talk” is pure class, while “Poor Man’s Rich Man” brings Steve’s original Artful Dodger West End stage past up to date.

The surprises keep on coming – “Lonely No More” was written as the first single for the reformed Small Faces but never released, and “Middle Aged Anxiety“ documents Steve’s feeling surrounding John Lennon’s death.

The live tracks on CD Two are from a scintillating gig at Annie’s Club in Cincinnati, with Steve and his band showcasing Marriott’s soul-man classics, together with a smattering of Small Faces and Humble Pie. Given the gig takes place in the USA, there is a preponderance of the Humble Pie material, played and sung expertly by “the voice that pulverises”.

Do yourself a favour – highly recommended!  ****

EP review: COLLATERAL – Acoustic Covers Lockdown

ANGELO TRISTAN – Acoustic Covers Lockdown EP

Website [Release date 25.12.20]

2020 should have been Collateral’s breakthrough year on the back of a well-received album from both fans and critics alike, and tour plans laid. That was before the pandemic laid waste to all of that. However, as Dee Snider famously said “you can’t stop rock ‘n’ roll”, so Collateral played a live outdoors show back in September, and for a Christmas treat frontman Angelo Tristan, along with the help of his of Collateral bandmates, has released this four song covers EP.

The choice of two of the four covers will come as no surprise, Aerosmith’s ‘Dream On’ (Angelo has landed the role of Aerosmith vocalist in an upcoming biopic of the band) and Bon Jovi’s ‘Living On A Prayer’, a band who are a big influence on Collateral’s sound. The latter has a tasty (electric!) guitar solo, whilst the former has a neat piano/vocal trade off.

The other two covers on the EP are Def Leppard’s ‘Hysteria’, which is okay, and ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen, a song which has been covered numerous times already. However, it is the best cover on this EP as Angelo puts plenty of emotion into his singing. Full marks to whoever tinkled the ivories on here as they really add the icing (and indeed marzipan!) to the musical cake.

A perfect musical gift and pick me up from the Collateral boys. ****

Album review: LEGS DIAMOND – Expanded Remasters

LEGS DIAMOND - Out On Bail

Rock Candy Records [Release date 04.12.20]

Legs Diamond has ceased trading and then later reopened for business several times since its inception in 1975, and is still gigging to this day. Enterprising UK label, Rock Candy Records remastered and reissued the band’s 3 seventies albums in 2018, all fully loaded with bonus tracks. And now the 3 eighties’ albums have had the same cosmetic, pumped up RC treatment.

On the first of these, Out On Bail (1984), nothing really ignites but almost everything smoulders satisfyingly. Rick Sanford’s wailing musical tones breathe fiery life into the glowing embers of AOR gems ‘Walkaway’ and ‘Find It Out The hard Way’, then combine gloriously with guitarist, Roger Romeo and keyboardist, Michael Prince on the lightly metallised hard rock of ‘Doomsday Flight’ and ‘Nobody’s Fool’ . . . each sparking off the other. Some tightly choreographed proggy moments develop through the back half of the album.

The remastering breathes further life into an already lively recording… like a series of colour photos compared to the original’s monochrome snapshots.

The album was acclaimed by fans and critics alike.

Land Of The Gun (1986) capitalised on that success. Lyrically, love found/love lost and the travails of the working man remained the tried and tested rock’n'roll tropes, but musically, the band had found their metier.

They brought with them the city levelling sonic boom of their seventies hard rock beginnings, adding the scope and ambition of the sleek, synthesised eighties.

‘My Own Game’ and ‘Turn To Stone’ (their only ever single release) are coated in stylish eighties’ gloss, with faint synth-rock glimpses showing through, and the sharp power chords and pummelling rhythms of ‘Waiting For The Night’ and ‘Rock Doktor’ show the band still tracking in that Deep Purple/Uriah Heep groove.

LEGS DIAMOND - Town Bad Girl

The band’s songwriting, and consequently its identity, was stronger on the band’s 1990 album, Town Bad Girl. The lyrics are much darker, and adult themes – from do not resuscitate decisions to abusive father/daughter relationships – showed a willingness to explore subjects not often examined in the world of rock and metal.

Musically, it’s a meaner, leaner album than their other eighties’ albums. ‘City Streets’ and ‘World On Fire’ are much more sophisticated pieces of melodic hard rock, both of them doing a persuasive job of matching style with substance. The disarmingly honest ‘Stage Fright’ and the aching ‘Never Enough Time’ follow through, proving you don’t need to trowel on sentimentality to make an emotional connection.

As with the label’s previous Legs Diamond reissues, there is a generous helping of bonus tracks sprinkled across the 3 recordings. 10 in all. And as with Out On Bail, the sonically sound remastering on Land Of The Gun and Town Bad Girl adds punch and clarity to the music.

Album review: LAYLA ZOE – Nowhere Left To Go

Pete Feenstra chatted to Layla Zoe for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast Sunday 27 December 2020.

Layla Zoe - Nowhere Left To Go

Self Release [Release date 08.01.21]

Layla Zoe is back with ‘Nowhere Left To Go’, her 15th album in 15 years. And though the stats confirm a relentless output, her creative spark is a function of her willingness to explore a wide and varied subject matter, combined with the significant step towards artistic control through the crowdfunding of her albums.

Put simply, she’s worked hard on her vocals, song-writing and marketing strengths to build her award-winning career and release arguably her best album so far.

‘Nowhere Left To Go’ feels like it evokes a time and a place. There’s the extraneous COVID-19 environment of course and her fierce independence to explore music on her own terms, even if it’s tempered by her extra responsibilities as a producer to oversee the results of 7 different collaborations, all done remotely.

If that sounds like some sort of hotchpotch, the album certainly isn’t that, as the different writers lead her to new musical avenues and help bring out the best in her vocals, right down to the welcome use of harmonies and falsetto when the song demands it.

The core of the album is built on her choice of music to accompany a versatile vocal range. This allows her to bring real presence to bear on her lyrics and sympathetic arrangements.

Every element always supports the song and means the album flows eloquently, even if it does begin with the ‘back to front’ gospel opening of ‘Prayer’. This means she has to build up her musical journey from a point that in the hands of others might be used as an album resolution.

To these ears, Layla Zoe has always been a massive vocal presence since she relocated to Europe. Her tendency to hook up with several unreconstructed rock guitarists sometimes led her to over singing, in an effort to fill the space left in several booming arrangements.

This album is much better balanced because her musical collaborators are far more diverse. In Jackie Venson she has found a similar musical spirit and in Bob Fridzema a keyboard player with a melodic bent and a keen ear for subtle arrangements.

She consistently digs deep for lyrical depth, mixing personal moments with quasi-autobiographical songs and occasional social commentary. It all makes for a good mix of rock, blues, soul, gospel and ballads glued together by her own lyrical weight.

She opens with the gospel-tinged ‘Prayer’. Co-written with Jackie Venson it shows she’s looking for new ways to express herself.

The following riff-led title track stomp is about the recent Australian bush fires, but feels as if it carries a significant metaphorical message.

And if ‘Nowhere Left To Go’ doesn’t literally apply to Zoe, that is because this album is predicated on her relentless need to always look forward in search of artistic fulfilment.

It’s her readiness and ability to explore new and interesting ways to make an impact with her voice that defines this album.

The title track is also the lead single and as such makes the biggest crossover impact. She’s always been known as being a passionate performer and fiery singer often given to channelling her anger through her songs. This is still the case here, particularly on the spiky Guy Smeets co-penned ‘Little Boy’, on which she works hard to channel her emotive lyrics into his Jimmy Page style guitar lines.

Then there’s the Alastair Green co-write ‘Don’t Wanna Help Anyone’, which is effectively a counterweight to the reflective ‘Sometimes We Fight’.

The latter Fridzema organ-led ballad finds the perfect balance between her brusque Janis Joplin style husk, heartfelt lyrics and a sympathetic musical framework, while her own brief harp flurry evokes early Neil Young.

She reaches for self-affirmation as she attacks her vocal line with gusto on another Fridzema co-write called ‘Susan’. By contrast she shows real restraint and a definably emotional connection on both the falsetto driven ‘Might Need To Fly’ and the closing ‘Dear Mom’, which features autobiographical flashes, as part of an imagined narrative.

She’s joined on the waltz style track by co-writer and fellow Canadian roots artist, the mandolin playing Suzie Vinnick. James Stephens adds sonorous fiddle, while Layla subtly doubles her vocal input.

Both the spartan ‘Lies’ – a duet with stand up-bass player and co-writer Brandi Disterheft – and the hard rocking title track are the best examples of her social commentary songs. Her vocal phrasing perfectly matches the lyrical subject matter and are perfectly framed by a nuanced arrangement.

‘Nowhere Left To Go’ is an uncompromising statement by a fiercely independent artist full of integrity and spark. She may have an uneasy relationship with the current corporate digital download culture, but ironically its that friction that has pushed her own efforts to a higher level, if only to show that you can give your best without defined label expectations.

‘Nowhere Left To Go’ is a well-paced, coherent album from beginning to end. The self-proclaimed ‘Canadian darling of the blues’ rocks hard enough, but also makes a significant emotional impact with her lyrics.

She never strays too far away from her bluesy roots, but her music is shot through with enough passion, integrity and frisson to appeal to a potentially wider audience. Contemporary blues-rock is in safe hands. ****

Feature: Albums that time forgot … NATIVE CAIN – The Primitive Soul

NATIVE CAIN - The Primitive Soul

ProActive (1999)

Chatting to Pete Feenstra for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio in 2020  vocalist/songwriter Lee Small commented about his love of Glenn Hughes.  And it is Hughes vocal influence that permeates the 1999 album ‘The Primitive Soul’.  Small has had an interesting career, as part of the Phenomena project and fronting bands like Shy and most recently Lionheart.

Native Cain came together in the late 1990s, developing from the band Pride, with Connor Emms (guitars), Jon Hayward (bass) and Dez Wootton (drums).  But the album came and went just like the band.

There was a connection with Magnum (Bob Catley/Tony Clarkin) in the late 1990s in the form of keyboard player Paul Hodson who had worked on the Hard Rain album (1999) together with backing vocalist Sue McCloskey and Native Cain supported Bob Catley on his solo tours in 2000.  Hodson also played on ‘Where Empires Burn’ Catley’s 2003 solo album.

Once you get over the Hughes-isms ‘The Primitive Soul’ is a good listen with ‘The Holy’ a particular standout.  Overall, melodic hard rock but with prog influences.

What happened to Native Cain?  There are a series of demos on YouTube for a projected follow-up album dating from 2001 but without Lee Small.  The original album surfaced in a new guise via Escape Music (2006), but the band name was changed to Surveillance and the album entitled Angelstation.

Essentially the same band cropped up as ‘Band Of Brothers’ with Small in 2012 when he promoted his solo album ‘Jamaica Inn’ (Escape Music).  Connor Emms and Dez Wootton now play in the metal band The New Saints.

In this interview edit, Lee Small tells Pete Feenstra about his Glenn Hughes influences.  First broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, November 2020 (4:50)

Album review: ANDY SUSEMIHL – Alienation

ANDY SUSEMIHL - Alienation

SM Noise [Release date 21.01.21]

Andy Susemihl’s last album ‘Elevation’ was my “Best of 2018″ – perhaps it should have been called “revelation” such was the surprise at a seasoned pro – and a relatively unknown one albeit with an interesting  backstory – unleashing one of the year’s best albums by anyone’s standards.

In the interim Andy has released an EP but ‘Alienation’ is a fine follow-up to the previous album if perhaps not quite topping it.  When I interviewed him following the release of ‘Elevation’ he kindly sent me a selection of his previous solo albums, all had merit but sadly all were on fairly low-key labels and would have received little promotion outside of his homeland.

For those with a weak spot for shortish (sub-four minute), melodic, pop rock tunes embellished with immaculate guitaring and great choruses look no further.  Whilst fellow countryman Michael Schenker has been a big influence, stylistically the songs are more West Coast AOR reflecting that Susemihl lived in California for ten years.  Before that he was in German hard rock band Sinner and then with Udo Dirkschneider’s band U.D.O.

The album ramps up from the half-way mark including the standouts ‘Common Sense’, ‘Medicine Wheel’, ‘The Game’ and ‘Over My Head’.

If some of the lyrical content seems to be derived from a world weariness with the music industry in general (‘Monkey Time’, ‘Billion Dollar Light Show’) this doesn’t come as a surprise because these observations were also present on previous tunes. Maybe Andy should just shrug his shoulders and move on.

And as an aside, GRTR! gave ‘Elevation’ such a great write-up but we never received the EP ‘Burning Man’.  There’s something amiss there?

Let’s hope ‘Alienation’ is not a by-word for the future and that this latest offering – and with the previous album -  sees Susemihl entering the mainstream.  He certainly deserves it.  ****

Album review: THE SWEET – Isolation Boulevard

THE SWEET – Isolation Boulevard

Website [Release date 18.12.20]

First recordings by the revamped Sweet line-up that sees original member guitarist Andy Scott and long serving drummer Bruce Bisland joined by bassist/backing vocalist Lee Small (Phenomena, Shy, Lionsheart) and vocalist Paul Manzi (Cats In Space, Arena). Manzi has deputised for Tony O’Hara few years ago in the Sweet when they were touring Australia.

Andy Scott says of the album: “The cover artwork tips a hat to Desolation Boulevard, 1975 and the band’s first headline tours in the USA. The comparison between the old and new is obvious as they are both a compilation of the best of Sweet’s recordings, satisfaction guaranteed.”

Twelve songs, with ‘Still Got The Rock’ released as a single (the newest re-recording on here dating back to a 2015 compilation from the band) and the emphasis on the band’s heavier songs. The guitars are ramped up on ‘Set Me Free’, whilst ‘Ballroom Blitz’ has lost none its power and appeal (although a bit bizarre as the original call backs are still kept in the song). ‘Turn It Down’ is another fine piece of hard rocking Sweet style.

Of course the glam rock classics are here including ‘Blockbuster’, ‘The Sixteens’ (for me one of the few songs by them that hasn’t aged well), ‘Fox On The Run’, ‘Teenage Rampage’ and the stomper of a Hello cover that is ‘New York Groove’.

Trouble is when I listen to Paul Manzi’s voice on these songs I keep thinking it is one of his previous bands Cats In Space! No band thing really as that band love the Sweet and you have to say he is a good fit for the band. With Lee Small joining Andy Scott on the band’s distinctive backing vocals it all works and sounds good.

Some fans may baulk at re-recording the band’s classic songs yet it gives the two new boys a chance to show their worth and introduce a few new fans to these glam rock legends. Hopefully this line-up will get out touring soon and who knows, maybe we can see a new album as Lee Small is a good songwriter to work with Andy Scott.  ***1/2

Album review: OCEAN HILLS – Santa Monica

OCEAN HILLS - Santa Monica

AFM Records [Release date 27.11.20]

Ocean Hills is the brain child of vocalist Zoli Teglas (ex-Ignite), having taken 30 years’ worth of experience in the music business to launch this project with some very talented, accomplished musicians - Peter Lukacs (guitars), Daniel Szebenyi (keyboards, bass) and Reinder Oldenburger (guitars) all share Teglas’ vision and were instrumental in bringing it to life, and he is the first one to credit his bandmates for making the debut album, Santa Monica, what it is. These guys are good.

The album opens with the current single ‘Bound’, which is the 4th to be released from the album and was co-written by Bush guitarrist Chris Traynor. Santa Monica has 14 tracks including extended versions of the 3 singles that preceded the album release, ‘A Separate Peace’, ‘Death or Liberty’ and the title track, ’Santa Monica’.

All the tracks are very different varying from full on rock to acoustic ballads and anywhere in between. With a nod to Zoli’s self-confessed influences of KISS, Led Zeppelin, The Who, he has a very clear vision ”I just want us to be known as Working Class Rock N’ Roll.”

“The best musicians out there are the ones, when you go to a concert, that elevate you above all your problems for the few hours you’re there,” says Teglas. ”They take you to another level and make you feel better than when you got there. I miss guitar solos, I miss songs that are almost 6 minutes long, I miss musicians that can really play. This album will grow on you because there are songs on it that are completely different from each other – acoustic songs, total rock songs – and hopefully people will sit down with it and let it get into their soul.

Looking at the Ocean Hills debut as a whole, Teglas sees it both as a tribute to and a return to what made music special to him at a younger age. As the kid who got KISS Alive II as his very first record, he remembers feeling as if it had been made specifically for him. That feeling dedicated him to the listening experience, made him want to hear more, which is the goal of Ocean Hills both through the album and performing live: to bring back the magic of discovering music, which Teglas feels is sorely lacking in the world these days.

“This has always been a passion for me,” says Teglas. ”I’m trying to write music, for example, for the average plumber from New Jersey who comes home after a long day at work and wants to lose himself in a song, because the majority of people out there are working their butts off. I’m writing music for the 30, 40 and 50 year-olds out there; people that understand where Ocean Hills is coming from.

Personal favourites for me ‘A Separate Peace’ (starts with a hint of Slipknot in my view), ‘Santa Monica’ and ‘Angels Wings’ with it’s heavy opening riff.

This is a class debut album, great production, there are no fillers, and this feels all the more poignant an album given the times we are currently in – rock n roll is most definitely still going strong, music is still happening and I’ll be signing up right now as this band really is exciting – I see great things ahead for Ocean Hills. ****

Quick plays: MARIOS POLITIS, SILENT SKIES, MOTHER ROAD

MARIOS POLITIS This Is My Story

MARIOS POLITIS This Is My Story Alcyone Records [Release date 10.11.20]

Marios Politis is a composer, singer and guitarist from Athens, Greece who has released an album of meaningful and thoughtful songs. The lyrics focus on introspection and personal experiences which many of us can relate to.

It is a mixed musical bag, with an instrumental ‘The Trip’ rounding off the album, before which we have the bluesy ‘My Blanket’ and the alt rock of ‘Days’. A song like ‘How Can I’ wouldn’t look out of place on a Pearl Jam album.

Both ‘London’ and ‘Music’ have wide appeal, both having indie pop/rock melodies at their heart. Liking the use of guitar on each song which rings out clear and precise.

Marios Politis is an artist to keep an eye on and this is a very enjoyable album. ***1/2

SILENT SKIES - Satellites

SILENT SKIES Satellites A Sweet Lemon [Release date 11.12.20]

Silent Skies is a collaboration between Tom S. Englund, vocalist of Evergrey, and virtuoso classical pianist Vikram Shankar. The pair first crossed paths when Englund saw Shankar’s sensitive piano interpretation of Evergrey’s ‘Distance’ on YouTube. As Shankar comments, “I think part of the magic of Silent Skies is that we come from fairly different backgrounds, and do not have identical musical personalities, but we have certain shared musical, aesthetic, and emotional values that make the art we make together really click.”

No surprise then that it is very cinematic in sound, with the emotive singing of Tom S. Englund perfect for the music. Highlights include the aforementioned Evergrey song ‘Distance’ and a brilliant version of the Eurythmics’ hit ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’. Even if you listen to nothing else do give this a listen as they take the song and make it their own. ****

MOTHER ROAD - II

MOTHER ROAD II Metalapolis Records [Release date 19.02.21]

Mother Road first emerged in 2013, named after the legendary Route 66 highway in the USA and their 2014 debut album gained favourable reviews. They are now back with their second album, where the two main men – former Soul Doctor guitarist Chris Lyne and vocalist Keith Slack (ex-Steelhouse Lane, MSG) – are now joined by drummer Zacky Tsoukas (ex-Soul Doctor) and bassist Barry Sparks (ex-Dokken, Ted Nugent).

Think Bad Company with Sammy Hagar on vocals and you won’t be far off from the sound on this album. Keith Slack still has that vocal power (if you don’t own either of the Steelhouse Lane albums go seek them out) as he proves on ‘Cold Heat’, a funk fuelled hard rocker. ‘Ain’t Got The Blues’ is just that, a hard rocking blues number.

The songs don’t overly impress but for a blues based, 70′s hard rock fix it is not too shabby. ***

Album review: THE WILDHEARTS – 30 Year Itch

THE WILDHEARTS - 30 Year Itch

Round Records [Release date 04.12.20]

My initial thought when I looked at this album was, I feel old! How can it have been 30 years since the Wildhearts exploded onto the music scene??

Returning to the classic Wildhearts line up of Ginger, CJ, Rich Battersby and Danny McCormack, this double album was recorded live during The Renaissance Men and Diagnosis tours during 2019.

30 Year Itch delivers 17 fired up tracks covering the majority of the Wildhearts back catalogue with only album not included, “Stop Us if You’ve Heard This One Before”, no covers here!

Ginger’s requirement of the sound engineer, “I want loud guitars and loud crowds” which it most certainly delivers along with all the raw energy and passion you’d expect from the Wildhearts.

Ginger sums it up “As far as I am concerned, this is a classic album by a band playing timeless songs that don’t fit into any established genre. Is it rock? Is it punk? Who cares it’s the Wildhearts!” Amen to that.

Opening with “Dislocated” this is an energised, passionate performance by a band at the top of their game, the influences are there from Motörhead to Green Day, with powerful lyrics and heavy guitar riffs this is rock perfection from start to finish.

I love the Wildhearts, but my personal favourites on this were “Sick of Drugs”, “Caffeine Bomb” and “Love U Till I Don’t”.

The band close their packed set out with the classic crowd pleaser, “I Wanna Go Where the People Go” to a clearly rapturous crowd. How we have taken those moments for granted – never again.

For anyone (!) who’s desperately missing live music or wants to reminisce about being in the presence of pure rock n roll, this album is a must play … you won’t be disappointed but it may leave you hankering to be in that crowd, watching this band do what they do best. When Ginger declares “I am the king of rock and roll” there’s no arguing. *****

Album review: PALACE- Rock And Roll Radio

PALACE- Rock and Roll Radio

Frontiers Records [Release date 04.12.20]

Michael Palace, a man with multiple performing and writing credits to his name, is now onto the third album from his own project. 2016’s ‘Master of the Universe’ was mainstream melodic hard rock, but is follow up ‘Binary Music’ saw a surprise change of musical emphasis, lighter in feel with pop and even some dance influences added to the mix. ‘Rock and Roll Music’ sees some further stylistic shifts, though probably closer in spirit to its predecessor than to the debut.

Palace is truly a cottage industry, a solo effort in nearly everything from production to album cover and booklet design. The songs, all written or co-written by Michael, are strong; his vocals, while lacking a distinguishing characteristic, have the perfect pitch and tone for the music. And he supplies almost all the instrumentation  with the exception of one guitar solo, though the downside of that is that it has a highly processed, programmed feel than can lack a bit of meat for the more heavily inclined.

With an intro where he sings ‘ she’s got the fire’ over  a burst of synths, the title track is a quintessentially eighties slice of pop rock, albeit with a short but sweet guitar solo, that could have come from the pen of Huey Lewis and the News or Eddie Money.

It’s fun but throwaway, but then followed by a couple of more substantial numbers that are nothing short of outstanding- ‘Castaway’ is full of West Coast-isms that run the gamut from Toto to contemporary Unruly Child, and ‘Way Up Here’ with superb melodic hooks and a sweet solo outdoes  even Houston for AOR fluffiness. The vocal arrangements on both are particularly impressive with a perfect mix of lead and backing vocals.

On ‘Cold Ones’ the eighties vibe is further enhanced by a sax break before the guitar solo, and it suffers  only from being sandwiched between the above mentioned pair and ‘Eleonora’, a semi ballad with lush atmospherics and a vocal arrangement that call to mind Chicago and Starship’s hit making eighties years.  It is his good fortune that his partner’s name has enough syllables to be elongated to fill the chorus perfectly.

The two rockiest numbers, which show off Michael’s guitar shredding prowess, are probably the kitsch but fun ’Hot Steel’, with its (presumably tongue in cheek) lyric ‘Hot Steel, Metal Sex Appeal’   and ‘She’s So Original’, this time the eighties feel of the chorus calling to mind ‘7 Wishes’-era Night Ranger.

They sandwich a pair in ‘My Gray Cloud’ and ‘Origin of Love’ which return more to a hi-tech style, and are less immediate though the latter boasts a lush chorus and quirky guitar solo. However for me, with the best tracks front loaded, the album does run out of steam  a little and on both ‘Strictly by the Rules’ and ‘When It’s Over’ the West Coast vibes stray too close for my liking to the funk pop world of Level 42 and Go West, complete with programmed bass.

Nevertheless It’s incredible how this Lithuanian-born Swede has captured a sound so redolent of eighties California it demands to be listened to with the top rolled down cruising down a palm tree-lined boulevard.

The style of musical delivery may not be to everyone’s taste, but for me this lovingly created album  suits Michael Palace really well and confirms he is something of a renaissance man among the Scandi melodic rock community.  ****

News: Get Ready to ROCK! announce Best of 2020 Popular Poll winners

Snake Oil & Harmony

Rock music website Get Ready to ROCK! has announced the results of the Popular Poll for Best of 2020.

Readers and listeners could vote in two categories this year: Top Albums and Breakthrough Act.

Snake Oil & Harmony (aka Dan Reed and Danny Vaughn, pictured) were voted Top Album for ‘Hurricane Riders’.

In his original review,  News and Reviews Editor Jason Ritchie commented about “songs that draw the listen in and create images in your head based on the lyrics and music.”

Also in the top five line-up this year were albums by Legacy Pilots, AC/DC, Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult.

The Best of 2020

Commenting on the original reviewer selections published in early December Jason said:

“2020 has been a strange year for music.  Our Best of lists as always reflect the great judgment and hard work of our reviewers.  They don’t always mention the most obvious.

However, this year there was a consensus for AC/DC’s brilliant comeback, closely followed by Blue Oyster Cult.  Both give examples of older, classic rock bands producing something that still sounds fresh, authentic and exciting.  And the same applies to our third “best of” album, the latest from Deep Purple.”

Breakthrough Act in the Popular Poll is pop/country/rock artist Jessica Lynn.  Reviewing  a recent single, Jason wrote “enough pop and country to get that all important airplay/playlists, but also a little bit of rock in the guitar and a smattering of soul in her vocal delivery.”

Also in the listings this year hard rockers Hollowstar and Collateral, the latter were also mentioned in 2019.

The Best of 2020 is celebrated in a  two hour special on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio on Monday 21 December, and repeated Christmas Day, both at 22:00 GMT.

Album review: DUKE ROBILLARD & FRIENDS – Blues Bash

Pete Feenstra interviewed Duke Robillard for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 13 December 2020.

Duke Robillard - Blues Bash

Stony Plain Records [Release date 20.11.20]

You don’t need to have paid your blues dues for 50 years or more to be able to make a great big band blues party album, but it helps.

For example, you need a working knowledge of the material, or the “good stuff” that can fill the dance floor, as well as the calibre of musicians to bring it all too life.

Duke Robillard is perfectly placed then, as the leading guitarist of his age who effortlessly straddles big band blues, jazz and swing to bring his experience to bear on the aptly titled ‘Blues Bash’.

The album is the result of his deeply felt and enfettered enthusiasm for the music he loves, as he and his ‘Friends’ lean into a succession of swing inflected West coast and Chicago blues tempered by old school r&b and jump blues.

Robillard’s passion for the days of jump and swing 78’s is well represented on a ‘live in the studio’ album featuring the 3-pronged former Roomful Of Blues horn section of Rich Lataille, Greg Piccolo and Doug James, plus well-chosen guests.

It’s an album that was made in a rush to beat the on-coming COVID-19 crisis, but that is arguably the reason for its sharp focus and energy.

The other reason of course is the swing and big band musical genre itself, which was never more than a few steps away from a dance floor.

From the hard driven opener ‘Do You Mean It’ and the instrumental bluster of ‘Rock Alley’ though to the lilting shuffle of ‘Give Me All The Love You Got’, you know you are in for a roller coaster ride.

Guest vocalist Chris Cote attacks the song with gusto, while Robillard’s stinging lines provide the perfect foil either side of some honking horns and delightful big band interplay.

They blow away any cobwebs to find the kind of intensity that they revisit on Roy Milton’s jumping ‘What Can I Do’.

There’s nothing like a combination of self-confidence and boundless enthusiasm to bring fresh vigour to an extant classic, and Robillard and his band do the song proud.

The combination of thumping bass, staccato horns and boogie-woogie piano swings with abandon, before Duke’s defining guitar solo.

There’s also a rocking version of Dave Bartholomew’s ‘Ain’t Gonna Do It’ – essentially a Mark Braun led boogie-woogie – that features Duke on his best of 4 vocal contributions.

As with all good parties it’s all about the pacing. And it’s the essential flow of this party-oriented album that is the key to its success.

Duke draws on the West coast harp playing skills of Mark Hummel, as he takes a lead rough-edged vocal on a stop-time Chicago blues with a sludgy feel, while the slow blues of ‘Everybody Ain’t Your Friend’ features another one of his coarse gritty vocals. A combination of rolling piano and horn stabs builds up a subtle tension that Robillard resolves with some stinging lines.

A well-chosen playlist is brought to life with real vim and vigour. And if there’s a warm familiarity about the proceedings from the choice of material to the players themselves, then it only serves to illustrate their unfettered enthusiasm on display here.

They are in their element on the instrumental ‘Rock Alley’, as Robillard’s incisive guitar playing could be Jimmy Vaughan. His clean and crisp guitar lines weave in and out of the fabric of the song leaving room for an earthy sax solo and sweet toned guitar, as the band slip into the groove.

The band’s interplay illustrates the shared passion that burns at the heart of a record that transforms the old school vinyl excitement into the modern digital age.

The crystal guitar tone and contrasting dirt sounding saxes might be from a bygone age, but the frisson can still be felt 41 years on from Lefty Bates original.

Michelle ‘Evil Gal’ Wilson provides further contrast, as she revels in the ’40’s style double entendre of ‘You Played On My Piano’, either side of some earthy baritone and sprightly piano. There’s still room for Robillard to slip into his alter ego of T-Bone Walker, as vocalist Chris Cote returns on the very short ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Doin’.

And just when you think the band is winding things down from fever pitch to a more relaxed vibe on an infectious shuffle, Robillard leads the ensemble into a delightfully languid, cool after hours finish, complete with a walking bass intro, sultry sax, crisp percussion and Hammond that suggest that having blown the roof off the place they can now content themselves with a jammed-out jazzy finale.

As with everything touched by Robillard the emphasis is on taste, tone and feel as he occupies the pivotal position as a blues catalyst and effective conduit.

‘Blues Bash’ is a reminder of the delights of old school blues and the immaculate musicians that continue to champion an enduring genre. ****

Album review: EAST TEMPLE AVENUE – Both Sides of Midnight

EAST TEMPLE AVENUE- Both Sides of Midnight

AOR Heaven (Release Date 27.11.20)

East Temple Avenue sees Australian songwriter Darren Phillips, whose project under his own name featured a star studded cast, join forces for a whole album with Robbie Le Blanc, the Blanc Faces singer whose combination of smoothness and grit has over the past few years made him the go to voice for AOR projects.

In contrast to the overly keyboard heavy approach of the best known of those in Find Me, there is more of a balance this time as a great anthemic opener  in ‘Mountain’ is more guitar heavy including some fine solos from another current unsung hero of AOR in Philip Lindstrand. The keys are still present, but in a supporting role.

‘Don’t Make Believe’ sounds great and while the songwriting is not as tightly focused there is a lot to admire including some spot on harmonies to close. A couple of mid-tempo songs then follow- ‘Fool for Love’, despite its Journey-esque piano intro is not a ballad as such but a vehicle for Robbie’s voice which in a couple of places draws comparisons with the great Mickey Thomas, and ‘Take My Last Breath’ feature more passionate vocals and a quality guitar solo.

‘Everything’, with shades of Honeymoon Suite, is a little generic but it is easy to see the guitar heavy ‘Forever Yours’ working well as a live track should this collaboration ever get to this stage.

The latter part of the album has an unusual pacing to it.  Two of the best and certainly most straightforward rockers are back to back in ‘Fly High’ (with its lyric ‘live to win, fuelled by adrenalin’) and ‘When I’m With You’- both have an optimistic, good time vibe and you can imagine Robbie’s face muscles contracting as he belts them out with real gusto.

Yet it closes with a pair of admittedly contrasting ballads  in ‘The End of Me and You’ and ‘Where Love Is’, the former rather melodramatic and the latter featuring Robbie singing over an acoustic backing with a very Lou Gramm- ish tinge to his voice.

I initially found the album a little bland, but after three plays it is still growing on me which is a good sign in a genre that often only offers an instant fix. It’s a beautifully constructed album of old school AOR with a set of songs that show Robbie Le Blanc at his finest.  **** 1/4

EP review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – Feeling Great

HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – Feeling Great

Bandcamp [Release date 18.12.20]

One of the better things during 2020 have been to see the rise in interest and acclaim for the progressive duo Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate. Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate are Malcolm Galloway and Mark Gatland, often accompanied by Kathryn Thomas (flute).

This four song EP is unrelated to their forthcoming album, ‘The Confidence Trick’, but contains some songs written during lockdown.

The title track sums up 2020 in a nutshell, as a year where we have all struggled to various degrees and although lyrically it is downbeat, strangely after listening to the song one feels more upbeat. Piano and lightly swished percussion work a treat on this song. It is the only vocals track on the EP too.

The Gilmour-esque guitar on ‘Struggling’ is simply stunning. Backed by piano and Hammond, they have created a wonderful piece of bluesy based music.

The instrumental ‘Callisto Cuddle Sponge’, named after Philip K Dick’s hideous alien parasite, features Mark Gatland on the Chapman Stick, which adds another dimension to the music.

‘Skyline’ is a bonus track, a previously unreleased electronic instrumental Malcolm wrote in 2011. A supporter heard it on a YouTube video, and asked for it to be released. Loving the synths/keys on this one – Tangerine Dream with a touch of the Chemical Brothers.

This EP from Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate will tide us over nicely to their new album is released. If you haven’t discovered this band yet get along to their Bandcamp page as you’re in for a treat. ****

EP review: LEWIS CLAY – Idle Hands

Website [Release date 25.12.20]

2020 has been a right shit show of that there can be no doubt, and it has hit the performing arts and live arena very badly, especially as most don’t manage to qualify for anyor little government support.

Take singer songwriter Lewis Clay as a prime example…he had a summer of shows lined up on cruises as part of his male vocal rock tribute Our Lady Valentine. Then along comes a pandemic and puts an end to all that planning, rehearsing and graft.

That would knock many back but those who are passionate about what they do find a way and adapt. In the case of musicians they create and we are starting to hear & see the fruits of these endeavours now and over the coming months.

Lewis Clay has a new five song, digital only EP out on Christmas Day and why not, as each day has felt pretty much the same this year! The driving Foo Fighters approved rock on ‘I’ll Be There’ is massively addictive. A real caffeine fuelled rocker. Do check out the accompanying YouTube video.

‘Burn’ is another brash and breezy rocker, whilst ‘Solipsism’ mixes a bit of philosophy and rock ‘n’ roll, as you do. The guitar riffs and drums never let up on this one.

‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ is an interesting one…the full on electric version, with a hint of a jangly riff, could easily grace an album by the Wildhearts. Whereas the acoustic version proves that a good song can work in any form.

As the man himself neatly sums up the EP in the EPK – “Cheaper than a festive Starbucks – Twice as bad for you”. Music for the here and now, keeping you entertained whilst getting you thinking at the same time. Crank it up and enjoy. ****

Album review: NEAL MORSE – Jesus Christ The Exorcist: Live at Morsefest 2018

NEAL MORSE – Jesus Christ The Exorcist Live at Morsefest 2018

Frontiers [Release date 04.12.20]

The studio album was released first as now Neal Morse and Frontiers release a live performance of ‘Jesus Christ The Exorcist’, filmed at the 2018 Morsefest.

It is an all-star ensemble with regular Morse collaborators such as Bill Hubauer and Randy George involved, while Eric Gillette (usually a guitarist) played drums and Paul Bielatowicz is on lead guitar. There was a string and horn sections to give the full sound and the accompanying DVD is worth watching for the visuals by Christian Rios. On sound was Jerry Guidroz (Sons of Apollo, Neal Morse Band, Haken).

As for the cast the lead role of Jesus was taken by Ted Leonard of Enchant and Spock’s Beard. Joining him were Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), Jake Livgren (Protokaw), Matt Smith (Theocracy), Mark Pogue, Wil Morse and Talon David as Mary Magdalene. If that wasn’t enough, it is a bit of a who’s who in Christian rock circles as Petra’s John Schlitt and Rick Florian (White Heart) are in the cast too.

Talon David does a few show stoppers in the show, most notably ‘Mary at the Tomb’ and ‘The Greatest Love of All’, where she duets with Ted Leonard – simply superb. Those after some 70s prog rock will enjoy ‘The Madman of Gadarenas’, whilst the reprise of ‘Love Has Called My Name’ is an uplifting piece of gospel to finish the show off on a natural high.

You may not play this lots as it clocks in at just shy of two hours, however, I guarantee you will enjoy each airing and subsequent watch & listen of this rock opera. When time allows this would make a great touring show in the similar mode of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra with a changing cast of singers and musicians. ****
