Album review : GIRLSCHOOL – Running Wild – Live in London 1984 (CD & DVD)

Cherry Red [Release date : 11.07.25]

We’ve said it before (and will no doubt say it again), Girlschool experienced their share of heartache… label let downs, revolving door membership issues, conflicting views on musical direction and the struggles to sustain their ambitions, never mind the industry’s prevalent sexism.

This CD and DVD release is taken from the band’s gig at London’s Camden Palace in 1984.

The DVD of the gig is a first.

A small stage lends itself to an intimacy clearly enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd. The energy bounces back and forth between band and audience. The banter is both ways. You can sense it, you can see it, you can hear it.

1984 was a key year for the band. This was the time to reinforce their transition from Metallised Biker Punk, to polished American Pop/Metal. They expanded to a five piece – Kim McAuliffe, Gil Weston, Denise Dufort, Jackie Bodimead, plus new girl, Criss Bonacci.
Success beckoned.

And so, on the Camden stage, the band straddle the boundary line between the past and the polish of their 4th and latest album, the Radio/MTV friendly Play Dirty.

In fact only 4 older songs, ‘Hit & Run’, ‘C’mon Lets Go’, ‘Emergency 999′ and ‘You Got Me’ survive the shift from the studio to the stage.
The remainder are an even mix of songs from Play Dirty and those planned for 1985 album, Running Wild.

Of the new material, ‘Love Is A Lie’, ‘Running For Cover’ and ‘Are You Ready To Rock’ never feel like too much, or not enough. Hearing them live deceived us to thinking perhaps the new, improved pop metal sound would be just like this. When in fact “just like this” was reserved for live performance.

The package is further boosted by some cool liner notes from Rich Davenport, based on new interviews with Kim McAuliffe. ***1/2

Interview: DEAD TOOTH

Dead Tooth

NYC-based post-punk outfit Dead Tooth return with a bang on their new single, You Never Do Shit, released via Trash Casual.

Following the acclaim of Birthday Boohoo, the track marks the first taste of their anticipated self-titled debut album, due this July.

Fronted by Zach Ellis and backed by a dynamic lineup including James Duncan, Taylor Mitchell, Mikey Cohen, and John Stanesco, Dead Tooth merge snarling intensity with genre-blurring artistry.

With a backstory rooted in late-night diners and a sonic history celebrated by NME and SXSW crowds alike, Dead Tooth have built a reputation for electrifying performances and genre-defiant records—and they’re just getting started. We had a chat with frontman Zach Ellis about the single and more…

Let’s start with the obvious—”You Never Do Shit” is quite the statement! Is it aimed at anyone in particular, or are you just airing out general frustration?

It’s an airing of frustrations at anyone who’s ever made your life harder in order to make their life  easier

The video feels like a fever dream in the best possible way. Who came up with the concept, and how many coffees were consumed in the process?

I came up with the concept after about 1.5 cups of coffee. Much more was drank in production but the exact number is not on record

Dead Tooth

?Do you ever write a song and think, “Yeah, this one might start a mosh pit—or a breakup”? Where does “You Never Do Shit” land on that spectrum?

I think this one has more of a chance causing a robbery than a break up but I’m hoping that it’ll start a sporadic boyband style synchronized dance like in the video

If this single were a person at a party, what kind of guest would it be—angsty poet in the corner or the one doing backflips off the sofa?

The guy streaking through the quad

The NYC underground scene is gritty, unpredictable, and weird—in the best sense. How does your music reflect that beautiful mess?

It’s pretty chaotic. It feels very NY to me in that sense. But also
this track is pointedly frustrated sounding which I think a lot of NYers are. Especially artists. The cost of living here is too high. It seems they’ve artist proofed this city. Unless you’ve got a trust fund it’s really hard to support yourself and have a band at the same time. We’re hoping Zohran fixes it

“You Never Do Shit” feels like both a roast and a rallying cry. If listeners take away one punchy message from it, what should it be?

Don’t leave your dishes in the sink for your roommates to clean up. It really isn’t cool

What’s coming next—another sonic grenade with the forthcoming album? Tell us about it

Oh yeah. This whole album is a nuc#%r blast. I’m so excited about getting it out and even more excited about making the next one.

Gig review: IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

As landmarks go, reaching 50 years in any business is an achievement, but to reach that in the fickle world of the music business is a bloody miracle. Iron Maiden have weathered the storm over the years by sheer hard work, determination to be the best, and do what they want to do like it or lump it! Thankfully 100 million album sales would suggest we do indeed like it.

This current tour is a celebration of the earlier years of Maiden encompassing tracks from their first 9 albums with the first 7 doing most of the heavy lifting in the set list, no bad thing in my book!

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

After a quick pop into Eddie’s Dive Bar which was set up in the nearby SWG3 venue, I headed to the Hydro and got in position down the front (second to the barrier in my case) in time for The Raven Age to get the night started.

The band have been a perennial Maiden support for many years, due in no small part to guitarist George Harris being the son of Maiden main man Steve Harris. However, the family ties can only go so far and thankfully The Raven Age have the songs and stage presence to more than hold their own.

The Raven Age – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

‘Forgive and Forget’ open the set with some crunching riffs and great guitar work from Harris and Tommy Gentry. Vocalist Matt James was on good form and put his illuminated mic stand to good use throughout the set.

A new song, ‘Hangman’ followed and went down well with the growing crowd as more filtered into the hall. The bands nu metal soundtrack might not have been to everyone’s taste, but overall, they got a lot of support and the cheers grew throughout the show.

The Raven Age - Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

The rest of the set was made up of tracks from their three albums with the highlights being ‘Grave Of The Fireflies’ and ‘Fleur De Lis’ which rounded out the set. Matt stated that the band would be back in Glasgow in November for a headline show and I could see a few new recruits to the cause heading along after this performance.

By the time that the opening bars of ‘Doctor, Doctor’ blasted from the PA the Hydro was filled to the rafters with 14,000 Maiden fans and to say the anticipation was high is a vast understatement!

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

The huge video screen at the back of the stage then took us on a tour of Maiden’s past with stops at the Cart and Horses and a brief dalliance in Acacia Avenue soundtracked by ‘The Ides Of March’. Eddie then appeared on the screen as the opening gambit of ‘Murders In The Rue Morgue’ gently led us into main event. The band appeared to a massive cheer, and we were off.

If you have seen Maiden over the past 40 odd years then you know the drill. Harry and Janick stage left, Dave and Adrian stage right and Bruce all over the bloody place! The only difference on this occasion is in the drum department with Nicko taking his well earned retirement and Simon Dawson stepping in to fill the large void he has left behind, more on that later…

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

‘Wrathchild’ was up next before ‘Killers’ brought the first appearance of Eddie in the flesh so to speak, complete with hatchet to recreate the Killers album cover and cause general havoc.  Bruce then took time to introduce Simon to the crowd before the video screen transformed the stage into a grand staircase which was the perfect backdrop for the ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ to make an appearance.

Things were then taken up a notch with ‘Number Of The Beast’ which had the Glasgow crowd singing along as if their lives depended on it. That was followed by one of my personal favourites, ‘The Clairvoyant’ complete with excellent guitar work from Dave, Adrian and Janick.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

We were then transported back to ancient Egypt with ‘Powerslave’. Bruce donned a feather mask and stalked the upper level of the stage in front of a huge pyramid scene on the rear screen. ‘Two Minutes To Midnight’ was up next, a song that is still as relevant now as it was when written back in 1984. Adrian Smith even broke out his original ‘Two Minutes To Midnight’ guitar taking me back to the Powerslave tour in the Edinburgh Playhouse when I was in my youth and still had some hair!

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

Next we were off to the high seas with a cautionary tale of “what not to do if a bird shits on you” as Bruce put it. The video presentation for the narrative of the ‘Rime Of The Ancient Mariner’ was simply stunning with the scenes of the Mariner battling with life and death as the curse took hold. Always a musical tour de force this was a real highlight of the evening as the song twisted and turned whilst the mariner told his tale…

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

How do you follow that? You throw ‘Run To The Hills’ into the mix and watch as the crowd turns into a sea of bouncing bodies, these guys know how to construct a setlist! We were then whisked back to Donington 1988 as the backdrop changed to reveal the cover of the ‘Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son’ album as the guys blasted out the title track.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

I did allude earlier to the void left by Nicko’s departure, and it was telling on the mid-section of this song that perhaps things were still gelling with Simon on the drum stool. Timings and rhythms were slightly out at parts and a few cues were missed in this song and others. This is no slight on Simon who did a great job, he just needs more time with the band to get everything nailed which is understandable, after 42 years with Nicko this is a huge change for all, and it certainly didn’t detract from the show.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

‘The Trooper’ was up next with Bruce waving his Union Jack and dressed in his red uniform jacket, although he did exchange the Union Jack to the Scottish Saltire mid song to resounding cheers. Eddie also made another stage appearance brandishing a cutlass and flicking the V’s at the crowd as he stalked around the stage.

The video screen was then put to great use once more as the opening bars to ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ rang out and found a caged Bruce pleading for his life. The video for this one was cleverly constructed and showed Bruce being led to the gallows by a spirit before reappearing onstage in a haze of smoke, a very effective visual.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

Bruce’s cries of ‘Scream for me Glasgow’ could only herald one song as Dave, Adrian and Janick played the familiar opening riff to ‘Iron Maiden’. A giant Eddie appeared menacingly on the back screen watching over proceedings as the crowd went into overdrive.

You want more? Of course we did! Once again the video presentation was stunning as scenes from the blitz were shown and Churchill’s rousing speech boomed over the PA as the band launched into ‘Aces High’. As Eddie battled with the Fokkers on screen in his Spitfire the band led the charge from the stage with plenty of support from the crowd as they sang along to every word.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

Talking of singing along, the crowd came into their own as the opening chords of ‘Fear Of The Dark’ rang out. Bruce prowled around the upper reaches of the stage again and was silhouetted against a full moon on the rear screen to good effect. That just left ‘Wasted Years’ to round off the evening in fine style, even if the opening section was a bit hit and miss due to another small timing glitch.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

Tonight, Iron Maiden proved why after 50 years they are still selling out huge venues in the blink of an eye. The dedication and determination of the band to put on the best show they can shines through. The band are probably unique in the fact they don’t just have one frontman but five, all of whom engage with the crowd throughout and make you feel you are part of something special.

IRON MAIDEN – Hydro, Glasgow 30th June 2025

Many of the crowd here tonight have been on the same journey as the band, growing up, raising families, paying mortgages etc, and the set tonight is the soundtrack to their lives. Each will have their own personal memories and favourite songs that mean so much to them and that’s where Maiden differ from most bands, they remain grounded with no rockstar bullshit. A band of the people, for the people.

“Iron Maiden’s gonna get all of you”. No problem Eddie, I already have a life membership!

Up the Irons!

Album review: ORIANTHI – Some Kind Of Feeling

ORIANTHI - Some Kind Of Feeling

Woodward Avenue Records
[Release date 27.06.25 (digital); 15.08.25 (CD), 19.09.25 (vinyl)]

There’s a fair amount of “competition” at the top of the female rock guitarist/vocalist ladder and there’s no room for complacency. Orianthi will probably be forever known as the go-to guitar player for Michael Jackson’s final UK shows, an abortive outing in more ways than one with Richie Sambora and a so-far fairly average solo output. Pete Whalley wrote back in 2013: “I’m sorry to have to say it, but it’s all a bit ‘American Idol’.”

‘Some Kind Of Feeling’ will certainly put her back where she should be, and is pleasing for the consistency of material.

Is there an Orianthi “sound”? Sometimes you wonder whether the songs are merely constructed to provide a springboard for her guitar playing. Like her other contemporaries, notably Joanne Shaw Taylor, she has realised that it makes sense to keep things radio-friendly and highly accessible. It should also come as no surprise that the main producer on the album is Kevin Shirley.

‘Attention’ is a case in point, a Nashville sheen making this ear-candy for the masses. Yes, we’ve heard it many times before but it’s difficult to knock it. And with songs like the title track Orianthi can easily rub shoulders with prime-time Sheryl Crow. Ditto ‘What I’ve Been Looking For’.  ZZ Top’s ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ and ‘Dark Days Are Gone’ are two fairly predictable stompers.

A collaboration with Joe Bonamassa – ‘First Time Blues’ – unleashes incendiary guitar whilst there’s a contemporary vibe to songs like the soulful ‘Ghost’ and ‘Call You Mine’.

And that’s it really. There’s nothing on this album that remotely challenges or confuses. Just solid musicianship and songs. But it’s her best solo album yet. ****

News: Albums of the Month (April – June 2025)

A quarterly feature highlighting album releases rated highly by the GRTR! review team and worthy of your investigation. We try and pick out a cross-section of albums that reflect the range of genres reviewed at the website.  The star rating will be at least ****

Joanne Shaw Taylor - Black & Gold

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR Black & Gold

‘Black & Gold’ is Joanne Shaw Taylor’s 10th album and it’s a defining roots rock release, as she confidently moves on from the rock/blues hamster wheel to embrace more Nashville friendly elements. ****

H.E.A.T- Welcome To The Future

H.E.A.T. Welcome To The Future

They have toughened their sound over the years but this version of H.E.A.T is lean and mean, yet also still very melodic, not least as they have mastered the art of intros that invariably grab your attention. It is at least on a par with ‘Force Majeure’ with the songs having a tad more depth  and for my money one of their very best releases in an already strong catalogue.    **** ½

Review by Andy Nathan

Chantel McGregor – The Healing

CHANTEL McGREGOR The Healing

In ‘The Healing’ we have a bone fide candidate for album of the year. It sounds absolutely incredible, with a production and mix that are nigh on perfect. It may have been ten years in the making but, McGregor and her partners have delivered something truly special. ****½

Review by Neil Pudney

FOLKLAW – Catch the Sun

FOLKLAW Catch The Sun

FolkLaw have the wide folk rock appeal of Ferocious Dog, The Levellers and Show of Hands and doubtless wow the crowds at festivals. ‘Catch The Sun’ is a gem of an album and one that gets better and better with each play. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

HAREM SCAREM Chasing Euphoria

Unlike the recordings of other bands who are still around now, there’s nothing esoteric about Harems Scarem’s new music, it’s just a pleasurable celebration of all that’s great about melodic rock, coupled to a relentless drive to make it work. ****

Review by Brian McGowan

SOLSTICE - Clann

SOLSTICE Clann

There is a charming, homespun and all-inclusive vibe that Solstice purvey and Clann can only widen their growing family of supporters. Utterly engrossing.  *****

Album review : JACK BRUCE – Harmony Row (Expanded 2 CD : 2 Blu-ray Boxset edition)

Cherry Red [Release date : 27.06.25]

Glasgow boy Jack Bruce was brought up on Harmony Row, a mile long stretch of tenements in Govan, on the south bank of the Clyde.

They’re gone now of course, as is Bruce, god rest him, but the music remains.

His songwriting collaboration with lyricist, Pete Brown, a prolific writer of poetry and prose, and an ardent advocate of British beat poetry, began with Cream, (together they wrote ‘I Feel Free’, ‘White Room’ and ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’) and this partnership continued into his solo work.

The PR describes this 4 CD set as the “definitive version” of Harmony Row. And it is.

Bruce’s “not like Cream” album explores the Proggy/Jazzy (a little) side of his musical genius, often just him playing piano, vocalising Brown’s unconventional, often irreverant lyrics (shades of Genesis, at times) on ’Can You Follow’ and ‘Escape To The Royal Wood’.

There’s more here of course, Chris Spedding contributes spare guitarwork, and John Marshall, percussion, but it’s unquestionably Bruce’s album. Arguably, the elegant, Procol Harum (ish) ‘Folk Song’, and ‘Consul At Sunset’, warmed by a lazy, Latin shuffle are the standouts, but in all honesty you could make that argument for most of the tracks here.

And that’s no surprise, the album has been lauded by all the key websites.

What this boxset edition is :

CD1 : the original album, remastered, with 4 bonus tracks.

CD2 : the original album in new stereo mixes, from the expert hand of renowned audio engineer, sound design/mixer, Stephen W. Taylor. (plus another 4 bonus tracks).

CD3 : BLU-RAY : the original album, re-tooled in 96 kHz / 24-bit, 5.1 Surround Sound & stereo mixes by Taylor. (plus more bonus tracks)

CD4 : BLU-RAY : Jack Bruce and Friends, Granada TV 1971. Plus 5 tracks from WDR TV programme 1972.

Quite some collection. Quite some treatment.

This album deserves it. *****

Album review: ALIEN – When Yesterday Comes Around

ALIEN- When Yesterday Comes Around

Pride and Joy Music (Release Date 21.03.25)

Its nearly five years since Alien’s last album, ‘Into The Future’, an attempt at a heavier sound that was a major disappointment – reviewing for GRTR! my verdict was ‘the experiment with a shift in direction has to be considered a failure…’

So, can a band whose self-titled 1988 album was one of the early classics of Swedish AOR, and whose appearance at Firefest in 2011 gave many goosebumps, bounce back?

The signs are not encouraging on opener ‘In The End We Fall’, continuing in the mould of its predecessor with a Euro symphonic metal vibe complete with double kick drums and Tony Berg’s neo-classical guitar flourishes. However it seems totally unsuited to Jim Jidhed’s Perry-like high vocals, which sound rather thin and weedy against the musical backing.

‘If Love Is War’ is in more flattering AOR territory,  with similarities both lyrically and in the hook to Michael Bolton’s ‘How Can We Be Lovers’, concluded with some great harmonies. It is much more like it, even if the production is somewhat muddy. Likewise ‘Strange Way’ is classic AOR with a slow verse giving way to a good chorus that perfectly fits Jim’s voice. In between ‘Aiming High’ has a chorus that takes a little while to appreciate but has the feel of the Joe Lynn Turner Rainbow years.

Unfortunately, ‘We Are Living’ is rather bland and ‘I Belong To The Rain’, with a Rainbow-esque  intro and Tony let off the leash with his soloing, doesn’t suit the thinness of Jim’s voice. I found myself  again and again drawn to bemoaning the production- this is at its worst on ‘I Remember’, a blatant effort to emulate Journey as the piano intro then rocks out into a chorus, is spoiled by the awful execution, messy and drowned in backing vocals.

The Journey influences are also clear on ‘Fall In My Arms’ with a great melodic guitar sound and ‘Coming Home’, while ‘Hearts On Fire’ has one of the best AOR choruses on the album. However surely the equally disappointing production of the legends’ last ‘Freedom’ album was not seen as an inspiration?

There are a couple of songs where the increasing weariness in Jim’s voice actually gives the songs an endearing character, similar to latter day Magnum with Bob Catley, in ‘Signs’ where there is also a nice guitar and Hammond organ battle, and the title track which effectively closes the album, prior to a short instrumental.

It’s an improvement and a shift back to their classic style for sure. But despite some promising songs the disappointing execution means its an album I can’t see myself returning to, in the manner of that debut all those years ago. ***

Album review : LYNYRD SKYNYRD – Celebrating 50 Years: Live At The Ryman (CD & DVD)

Frontiers Music [Release date : 27.06.25]

“Celebrating 50 Years – Live At The Ryman”, a live album and DVD capturing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s historic 50th-anniversary concert at Nashville’s legendary venue in 2022 is due out on 27 June.

The fact that this was the late Gary Rossington’s last gig provides considerable historical perspective, especially when you add the names Ronnie Van Zant, Jim and Cassie Gaines, who lost their lives in tragic circumstances… RIP.

The neatly timed package hits the streets and the online stores just as the band head out on their first European tour for several years.

It’s an ambitious schedule, with the 15 dates kicking off in Barcelona, closing out in London on 19 July.

Then on to the USA.

Most will recognise the names Ricky Medlocke, Johnny Van Zant and Dale Krantz Rossington, but with 9 active band members on stage, it’s more of a large ensemble cast, interesting to look at and listen to, playing songs that grab at the minds and memories of those who love the music.

Then there’s the road crew, always on the move, making sure that all those moving parts stay greased and oiled.

The set list, fittingly, is biographical. ‘What’s Your Name’ and ‘Workin For The MCA’ open a set that is heavy on the early stuff, back to when it all began, with all but one of the tracks coming from their first five albums. Like ‘Down South Jukin’, ‘Red White And Blue’ and ‘Saturday Night Special’, all filled with pithy social commentary and stories of life in the raw.

A receptive audience knows every bar of music, every line of lyrics, every move they make, and joins in accordingly. This is proudly old fashioned Southern Rock.

And when three guitarists, a keyboard player and elemental rhythms crank up the engine, a Southern Rock juggernaut rolls through the night, one that’ll keep on truckin’ ’til the tank runs dry or it runs out of road.

John Osborne (The Brothers Osborne), Brent Smith (Shinedown), and Donnie Van Zant (Van Zant & .38 Special) are among the band’s special guests.

The set ends, as we would expect, with the band’s signature songs, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, and ‘Free Bird’, between them 2.3 billion hits on Spotify.

You can’t say better than that. ****1/2

Album review : VENOM – Blackened Priests (3 CD Boxset)

Dissonance [Release date 27.06.25]

CD1: Prime Evil 1989
CD2: Temple Of Ice 1991 (plus EP Tear Your Soul)
CD3: Waste Land 1992

Formed in England’s industrial North East in 1979, there was none heavier, none more extreme and indeed none more influential in the heavy metal genre than Venom.

The band’s reputation was born out of the brutality and intensity of their sound, released from its cage on the debut album, Welcome To Hell, in 1981.

By 1988, the overworked Revolving Door of Band Membership had changed Venom’s original line up completely.
Wiki needs a separate page to list former members.

A solid mix of old and new recorded the three albums in this set (their 6th, 7th and 8th): originals Abaddon and Mantas (both from North Shields), Al Barnes and Tony Dolan, ex Atomcraft, on vocals.

The Lynx Studio team in Newcastle, Nick Tauber and Kevin Ridley, produced. They’d already shown their skill at the console with Anathema and Tygers Of Pan Tang. They gave Prime Evil a huge sound, front to back, side to side.

The album is a heavy metal feast of monster riffs, slick backed solos and lyrical provocation (fully realised through Dolan’s angry, animated vocals). The title track stands out, alongside the thrashy ‘Blackened Are The Priests’ and ‘Parasite’.

The album has been expanded here to 17 tracks by the inclusion of the Tear Your Soul EP, first released in 1990.

The undervalued Temples Of Ice is a welcome addition.
On only the second album with this line up, it’s clear that there’s a musical chemistry between them that ignites some well thought out Thrash/Black Metal material.
There are melodies, there is great bass guitar playing, there is a meticulousness, with lots of purpose underpinning the songs, there are no wasted moments.
‘Speedking’ and ‘Tribes’ stand out.

While many critics were waiting for the band to fail, Venom set about demolishing any doubts in the minds of their fans.

And although the band’s following dwindled for a while, the chainsaw axework cut through the gloom on Waste Lands, as Dolan gave voice to the dark and the dead on standouts, ‘Cursed’, ‘Kissing The Beast’ and ‘Need To Kill’, winning over old fans and gaining new.

Great to see these 3 albums (and EP) packaged together like this. ****

Gig review: MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

It is fair to characterise Melissa Etheridge as a pioneer and all-American icon. One of the first female rock stars to come out publicly. A chequered life which includes over 20 years as a breast cancer survivor. And an artist whose raunchy vocals and confessional songwriting broke into the male dominated world of roots and heartland rock in the late eighties.

Though not as big a name over here as in the States and without a hit single to her name, she has always had a close relationship with the UK; indeed, over the evening there were several stories about her first trip over in 1988. Yet I’ve only occasionally managed to see her here. My last occasion was in 2012 at Shepherds Bush Empire, where I managed to forget about and miss a 2022 gig, but this time a show in the unique and very special environment of the Union Chapel was unmissable.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

After we were warmed up nicely by an engaging set from Niall McNamee, his original Celtic- tinged songwriting and ability to tell stories entertainingly equally impressive, Melissa Etheridge came on stage wearing a sparkly green satin jacket and sporting a big smile before launching into  ‘No Souvenirs’, that raucous throaty voice still in excellent shape and a passionate ‘Yes I Am’ (with a twinkle in her eye that the album title had a subtle message).

Unusually for her, rather than a full band she was alone on stage, yet the format worked well, with both her voice and some very intricate acoustic guitar playing keeping the songs pretty close to their original feel.  She also seemed to enjoy performing and had an easy rapport with the audience of long-time fans.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

On ‘Occasionally’ she improvised a rhythm section by tapping on the underside of the guitar then, explaining that a solo show was a chance to dig deep into the back catalogue, another from the first album in ‘The Late September Dogs’ with more anguished lyrics, before a lengthy ‘Royal Station 4/16’ with some harmonica playing and loop pedals and impressive acoustic guitar solo.

The most different element of the show were the couple of occasions when she took to piano, first on a cover of ‘The Weakness In Me’ by one of her inspirations Joan Armatrading,  though did my ears deceive me or was the archetypally Brummie singer described as a Londoner?

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

The first of the big nineties US hits was ‘I Want To Come Over’ and you could hear people singing above her as the song progressed, then after ‘Let Me Go’ she returned to piano for ‘Nowhere To Go’, the lyrical themes of the emptiness of youthful existence in small town USA having a Springsteen feel, as did ‘You Can Sleep When I Drive’ with its name checking of places right across America. However, one difference from the Boss’ recent show was that other than the odd barbed remark, she stayed clear of the current political discord in her home country and focused on the more joyful aspects of life.

As you may have noticed there was nothing in the set after 1995, despite the fact she has continued to release a strong of regular albums (2010s ‘Fearless Love’ being a particular personal favourite). However, by the time of ‘Chrome Plated Heart’ with a guitar workout and another of those hits in ‘If I’m The Only One’ with more harmonica thrown into the mix, things were coming to the boil.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

In what looked like an orchestrated move, a number of her predominantly female fans rushed out of their pews and to the front or in the gangways at the start of another winner in ‘Come To My Window’ and stayed for the remainder of an hour and 50 minutes set, closing with a couple of longer workouts based around perhaps her two best known songs.

During ‘Bring Me Some Water’ I was impressed how, while working the crowd from one end of the stage to the other, she kept the song structure intact in an exposed environment with no backing band to fill in the gaps. Then on ‘Like the Way I Do’ she let her voice fully go out of control, becoming more ragged and huskier as a result. It may not have been technically the best, but it sure conveyed the emotion in the song.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE- Union Chapel, London, 17 June 2025

It ended a memorable gig and where others may have shrunk under the pressure of a solo show, this one proved, alongside those wider achievements in the rock world, that she is a compelling live performer.

Album review : AFTER THE FIRE – Bright Lights 1974-1982

Cherry Red [Release date 20.06.25]

Bright Lights indeed. After The Fire were (and still are) a British band who formed in 1972, who went on to release five albums between 1978 – 1982.

CD1: Signs Of Change (1978)
CD2: Early Demos (1979)
CD3: Laser Love (1979)
CD4: 80-f (1981)
CD5: Batteries Not Included (1982)
CD6: AT2F

Very much in command of their own ability to refresh the musical page, the band were constantly bringing in new ideas which were ultimately tied together to create something different.

They evolved from Progrock to New Wave to AOR in the space of 5 years.

The 1978 debut, Signs Of Change was bracketed with Genesis and ELP in the music media. The mostly long form tracks, like ‘Dance Of The Marionette’ and ‘Pilgrim’ demonstrated their Prog credentials (as well as affirming their Christian beliefs).

It met with limited success, but the band didn’t stand still long enough to truly create a permanent niche in the genre.

Only a year later, the follow up, Laser Love, swiftly climbed on board the fast accelerating New Wave bandwagon.

The debut had attracted industry attention. This time, pre-eminent producer/ arrangers, Rhett Davies, Muff Winwood, Rupert Hine and John Leckie all got involved. As a result, it hit the UK album charts a glancing blow.

By the third album, 80-f, the band had settled into an Andy Piercy, John Russell, Pete King and Pete Banks line up. After the inevitable personnel shuffles, they had achieved some hard earned stability.

Only standing still long enough to attract attention, they followed up with Batteries Not Included.
But the public don’t like moving targets, and so BNI made little critical or commercial headway.

AT2F, the sixth CD, was assembled entirely of previously unreleased tracks, aimed at the US market, where again the band had some limited success (their single ‘Der Kommisar’ became a Billboard Top Ten hit), but not enough to hold the band together.
In itself it adds to the proliferation of bonus/ demo/ unreleased material spread across this anthology.

The boxset is topped off with interviews with Banks, Piercy and Russell, plus numerous previously unseen photos from the band’s archive. Good VFM all round. ***1/2

Album review : SIGNUM REGIS – Eyes Of Power (2025 remix/remaster)

Beyond The Storm Productions [07.06.25]

Eyes Of Power is a 2010 album recorded by the Slovak Power Metal band, Signum Regis, recently remixed and remastered.

It’s the third from a 13 album back catalogue to undergo a retooling job. Again, remastering has burnished the music to a brilliant metalised sheen.

The band’s founding member, songwriter and bass man, Ronnie Konig wrote The Eyes Of Power material with then vocalist, Goran Edman, one of Europe’s leading rock and metal front men.

It’s a concept album. But before you roll your eyes, immerse yourself in the music. Lyrically fresh and invigorating, it takes the subject of Roman/Persian hostilities 1500 years ago as its narrative foundation.

The band carry us through this volatile period in European history with poise and panache.
The lyrics are clever, they have something to say about the nature of history, storytelling and the heroes and villains it creates, and how we invest in opposing points of view.

The music is imaginative, not phrased in the traditional Heavy Metal grammar of music making. You can almost feel the constant seismic rumble of Konig’s carefully calibrated bass work, particularly on ‘Dura Europos’ and ‘One Fatal Enterprise’, deftly avoiding the clang and thump free-for-all that blights so much heavy metal nowadays.

Felip Kolus’s lead guitar is wielded like the sharpest of weapons, delivering laceratingly beautiful axework on ’Renewal In The East’ and creating some moving chord progressions on ‘The Underground Temples Of Mithras’.

The arrangements are spiced with eastern musical flavouring, adding a sense of the exotic to the music.

Add that to Edman’s emphatically commanding vocals and we have something (old and) new, something special. ****

Album review: COMING UP ROSES – How Did We Fall So Far?

Coming Up Roses

Bandcamp [Release date 20.06.25]

Coming Up Roses are a London-based quartet fronted by singer/bassist Emily Sera, who relocated from Singapore to the UK in late 2022 together with guitarist Darius Oon so they could pursue their dream of being in a band as a full-time career. They subsequently met and joined forces with guitarist Charlie Wilson and drummer Caleb Blake.

Emily says of the album’s themes, “we drew a lot on our personal emotional journey of our move to the UK and the record touches on things that people might not necessarily want to show the world. Although not everyone can relate to uprooting their lives, most people can relate to introspective struggles and the repercussions of things that keep them awake at night.”

Opener ‘Hello Miss Anxiety’ sets Coming Up Roses musical stall out, namely upbeat indie rock featuring plenty of frantic guitar riffs and the melodious vocals of Emily Sera. That said, ‘I’m In Bed’ takes a dreamy pop route and gives further proof of the vocal talents of Emily. No great surprise this was released as a single given its memorable chorus.

They kick out the jams on ‘Awake’, a song made for festivals, as it ebbs and flows, plus has a rather fine Muse like guitar solo.

‘Little Guy’ is one of the year’s best songs to date. Despite the downbeat lyric, the chorus and melody are simply stunning.

Coming Up Roses match their name with their debut album, one full melody, musical colour and most importantly, good songs. ***1/2

Album review: WHITE WIDDOW – Reissues

Pride & Joy Classix [Release date 27.06.25]

White Widdow were formed in Melbourne, Australia in 2008 and centred around the Millis brothers Jules (vocals) & Xavier (keyboards) with guitarist Enzo Almanzi. They have released five studio albums to date, with the first three now being re-issued in a limited-edition run of 500 copies each. These are ‘White Widdow’ (2010), ‘Serenade’ (2011) and ‘Crossfire’ (2014), which were followed by ‘Silhouette’ (2016) and ‘Victory’ (2018).

White Widdow were regulars at the UK’s melodic rock festivals between 2011 and 2018, the latter at the Rockingham festival, where their set was enjoyed by GRTR!’s Andy Nathan. Since then they have played sporadically, mainly in their native Australia.

wwiddow

The self-titled debut (****) is a proper pomp rock meets AOR delight, recalling the glorious sound of 80’s acts like White Sister, Guiffria and Shooting Star. ‘Broken Hearts Won’t Last Forever’ (an acoustic version of this song is the bonus track) with its immense chorus, the uplifting ‘One More Day’ and the keys heavy ‘We’ve Got the Wings’ are the picks in a very rich crop of melodic treats.

serenade

2011’s ‘Serenade’ (***1/2) provided more highly polished, top quality melodic rock from the band. What made White Widdow stand out was their sound recalling that classic 80’s AOR/melodic rock sound, along with the vocal talents of Jules, ably backed by the keyboards pomp of his brother Xavier and the guitar solos of Enzo Almanzi. The Def Leppard tinged ‘Do You Remember’, the good time rock & feel of ‘Reckless Nights’ (you’ve got to love those harmony vocals) and the heartfelt ballad ‘Patiently’ are the musical icing on this cake.

cf

White Widdow had initially hoped to release their third album at the end of 2013, however, that year proved to be a difficult one with original bass player Trent Wilson retiring from the music industry and the death of drummer George Kristy. Despite these setbacks, in early 2014 the Millis brothers and Almanzi regrouped with a new line up, featuring Ben Webster (bass) and Noel Tenny (drums). The band released their third album ‘Crossfire’ (***1/2) in 2014.

For this album we can go back to my original review, “It is an enjoyable listen although being album number three a couple of songs you do feel yourself thinking you’ve heard it before.”

‘Just Another Night’ has aged well, still a perfect example of how to pen melodic rock that sounds fresh, yet the listener can still hear those 80’s musical influences. ‘Carry the Heartache’ is a classy ballad, the band’s love of White Sister shines through strongly on this one.

Perfect starting point for new listeners to White Widdow as these are their three strongest albums to date, and for existing fans each release includes a previously unreleased track. In even better news, the band are set to record a new album for release sometime in 2026.

Album review : INSANIA – The Great Apocalypse

Frontiers Music [Release date 13.06.25]

Naming your album The Great Apocalypse leaves Insania with a lot to live up to. Still, there’s nothing wrong with ambition, naked or otherwise.

It’s an interesting album, advertised as power metal. In fact the band nudge the needle of their stylistic compass back and forth through several metal related sub genres, like symphonic metal and indeed melodic metal.

And once you learn that their sound was born in the bowels of Iron Maiden’s primal howl and Helloween’s battle hardened riffery, you understand which route they have taken.

There’s not a huge amount of variation in the way the arrangements are put together, or in the narratives.

It begins well though.

‘The Trinity’ and ‘Indestructible’ are fine openers, hymnlike polemics with a show tune ambience… all delivered in a glorious rush of amplitude, speed and complexity, urging us to rise and fight “against the slavery of mankind”.

Subsequent tracks try hard to be illustrative, threading the same moral themes and concepts through the lyrics, while the songs quake with pneumatically powered riffs and pumping rhythms.

But if you drill down into each track’s DNA, you find the same protest song, telling us time and again that we’re all going to hell in a hand cart.

Niklas Dahlin’s fluid axework permeates each track – most notably ‘No One’s Hero’ and ‘The Great Apocalypse’ – with a sense of drama, tying the music together with a sense of carefully controlled chaos.

Revolution’ is almost speed metal. Speedy metal if you like, bound together by guitar and keyboard frills and fills, tones and textures, while stirring solos add pedal to the metal momentum.

‘The Prophesier’ drops into more mainstream power metal slot, and is all the better for it. Lyrically though there’s a strong sense of sameness. The anti-establishment generalisations only take you so far. You need to get into specifics to hold the listeners attention. ***

Album review: JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR – Black & Gold

Pete Feenstra chatted to Joanne Shaw Taylor for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 31 August 2025.

Joanne Shaw Taylor - Black & Gold

Journeyman Records [Release date 06.06.25]

‘Black & Gold’ is Joanne Shaw Taylor’s 10th album and it’s a defining roots rock release, as she confidently moves on from the rock/blues hamster wheel to embrace more Nashville friendly elements.

There’s plenty of salient melodies, subtle harmonies, catchy rhythms and with the exception of a closing cover by The Faces, memorable hooks.

It would be unfair to call this a formulaic album as there’s enough diversity, quality playing and even welcome bursts of frisson in her solos, and yet sometimes her best efforts seem dialled into destination Nashville, on a handful of songs that sound like something Rascall Flatts might have already written.

It also feels like she’s aiming at an audience demographic closer to her producer Kevin Shirley’s age rather than her own.

The title track for instance, is an object lesson in re-conditioning a catchy cover into the perfect vehicle for her timbre and guitar playing abilities.

She’s excellent on the opening ‘Hold Of My Heart’, which is one of two impressive co-writes with Phil Whitfield, as she ushers in a roosty album with an acoustic-into-electric country twang, glued together by Sav Madigan’s accompanying violin.

It’s a jaunty clap-along song with a snappy hook that rolls right along without gathering too much dust.

The Americana influence also provides her with the perfect service stop between blues, country and potential commercial acceptance.

Her belated gnawing guitar solo restates her rock credentials in a perfect mirror of Nashville’s penchant for well crafted songs with power solos.

Perhaps the real triumph of this album is that it stays one step away from sounding a little too contrived, while simultaneously suggesting she’s moving purposefully forward.

For example, the prosodic ‘Summer Love’ manages to give the album an uplifting feel, despite the use of an old seasonal changes metaphor.

Then there’s the poignant ‘Who’s Gonna Love Me Now’, a weighty song given a synth based arrangement which evokes the 80’s pop approach of The Cars main songwriter Rick Ocasek.

The sledge hammer rock of ‘I Gotta Stop Letting You Let Me Down’ is pure Kevin Shirley and sounds as if the producer might have argued for this song in the set list to offset the soft rock approach.

It gives the album a shot of energy with a maelstrom of layered guitars, weepy slide, crashing drums, Hammond stabs and a double helping of Joanne’s muscular guitar breaks.

Her sterling performances and the A-team production makes the songs as good as they could be, though subject wise there’s not a lot of emotion to hang on to, apart from some loosely aggregated relationship song.

‘Black & Gold’ refashions her musical identity with broader brush strokes, including a greater attention to song writing.

She impresses on the reflective, mid tempo and subtle funk of ‘All The Things I Said’, and then delivers the album highlight on a delicious second Shaw Taylor/Whitfield collaboration called ‘A Grayer Shade of Blue’.

It’s a delicious subtle blend of a piano-led motif, acoustic guitar and a spurned lover narrative.

If you wanted to bottle her potential crossover appeal, this would be the song.

She reverts to her earlier blues rock template on the riff-driven ‘Hell Of A Good Time’, which is bolstered by some energetic organ and her own gnawing solo.

In contrast on ‘Look What I’ve Become’, she works hard to overcome a lumbering balladic feel with a confident vocal and defiant solo.

And so to a wistful finish without a chorus, on a cover of The Faces ‘Love Lives Here’.

A surprising choice for an American sounding album, she steps up to the plate with one of her very best vocal performances, suggesting she is enjoying her wider musical remit. ****

Album review : LEVERAGE – Gravity

Frontiers Music [Release date 20.06.25]

When we reviewed Leverage’s 2021 album, Above The Beyond, we said: “It’s perhaps best described as heavy rock with stunning melodies and a penchant for unconventional song structures, and indeed, challenging lyrical themes.”

It would be easy to say that since then nothing has changed, when in fact everything has. We’re referring here to the loss of Kimmo Blom, a world class rock vocalist whose distinctive voice played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s identity.

Since then, the band’s guitarist and songwriter, founding member Tuomas Heikkenin, has recruited former Delain vocalist, Paulo Ribaldini to fill the void. And it works.

Heikennin has written a bunch of well crafted songs here. Stories of twisted relationships and grim realism, which are, as usual, full of vivid colouring, sinuous hooks and razoring axework.

His upfront guitars lean heavily on the rhythm section to create the kind of grown up, mature grained hard rock/metal that’s typified by the sinewy, mysterious ‘Tales Of The Night’, and the emotional surge of ‘Hellbound Train’ (shades of Magnum).

You’re not too far in before concluding that this is heavy rock in a highly sophisticated form, with melodies, bass lines and chord progressions tightly controlled.

There’s room too for old world metal, like the majestic ‘Shooting Star’, and the galloping ‘Moon Of Madness’. Iron Maiden, foot on the monitor blasts from another age both.

Heikkenin has clearly kept a firm hand on developments in the studio. Gravity is less adventurous than previous albums. This’ll be Ribaldini’s settling in period, and he gives his all in terms of style and volume.

His voice soars on the heroic, 7 minute Blue Murder–esque ‘All Seeing Eye’, and adds grit on the magnificently apposite closer, the 10 minute title track, ‘Gravity’, a symphonic metal epic. ****1/2

Album review : FAIRYLAND – The Story Remains

Frontiers [Release date : 13.06.25]

The Story Remains is the fifth album from Fairyland, the best French Symphonic Metal band since Manigance.

The death of founder Phillipe Giordana in 2022 – in the middle of writing and recording the new album – had a profound impact on the band, leading to a shake up in both the line up and musical style.

Most notably, co-founder Willdric Lieven brought in new vocalist on the block, Archie Caine. A smart move. Caine anchors the band’s imaginative, fanciful narratives to solid ground, while spine tingling orchestrations whirl back and forth around him.

The album’s spoken word intro paints a darkly lit picture of an epic fantasy cum Sci-fi world, a continuation of the themes vividly illustrated in 2022 album, Osyrhianta.

The cycle of death and rebirth plays a large part in the story, with ‘Karma’, ‘Samsara’ and ‘A New Dawn’ leading the way.

The thing is, the stories in such recordings don’t always appeal to genre fans, but that notion becomes irrelevant when you listen to the majestic ‘To The Stars And Beyond’ and ‘Hopeless Still’. Both are a showcase for Caine’s remarkable tenor, effortlessly hitting those skyscraping notes. And there is no attempt to sacrifice melody for bombast, in these two standouts or in any of the album’s other songs.

Pivotal tracks, the 10 minute ‘Unbreakable’ and its 8 minute ‘Postscript’, light up the album’s bold, cinematic soundscape.

Mirroring classical music, they are divided into several movements, each contributing moods and atmospheres to the lyrical themes.

Many bands take this same approach within the Symphonic Metal canon. Fairyland’s music is clearly strong enough to assimilate the genre’s characteristics and still emerge with its own unique identity/ identifiable sound. ****

Album review: CALVA LOUISE – Edge Of The Abyss

Calva Louise

Mascot Records [Release date 11.07.25]

Calva Louise are a multi-national, genre-blending band that consists of Jess Allanic (Vocals/Guitar/Keyboards), Alizon Taho (Bass/Backing Vocals) and Ben Parker (Drums/Backing Vocals). This is the band’s fourth album and first for Mascot Records, who they signed to last year.

“Our album is called Edge of the Abyss because that’s how we live. One misstep and everything could fall apart,” Jess Allanic says. “I emigrated twice, so I’ve already had a culture shock twice. This hurts a little less because this is where I want to be. I have nowhere to go back to.”

Not for the feint hearted this album as ‘Aimless’ far rips the paint of your walls, with screamo, dropped beats and a very melodic vocal in-between. One of the lead songs released ahead of the album is the awesome ‘W.T.F.’ A bit like a female fronted Muse jamming with Beartooth.

‘Impeccable’ will appeal to the electronic meets metal crowd and has an insanely catchy chorus and beat. An album break out hit if ever there was one.

Just when you think you have the measure of Calva Lousie they provide ‘Lo Que Vale’, which somehow sounds even more menacing sung in Spanish! On ‘The Abyss’ and ‘El Umbral’ the songs mix electro beats, with alt metal crunch and quieter, almost pop moments. The latter song goes through so many time & mood changes, yet never loses its addictive melody.

Calva Lousie have produced one of the albums of the year. Full of ideas, melody, metal crunch , cinematic soundscapes and certainly not afraid to jump genres in the course of any song. Stunning. ****1/2

Album review: HEARTS ON FIRE – Signs & Wonders

Hearts On Fire

Pride & Joy Music [Release date 25.07.25]

Seven years after their debut album, 2018’s ‘Call Of Destiny’, Hearts On Fire are back and have a new vocalist, non-other than Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring of Fire, Royal Hunt and many, many more).

Jean Funes (guitars) and Joel Mejía (drums) – both members of Silent Tiger – remain at the heart of Hearts On Fire, with keyboardist Eric Ragno (Khymera, The Babys) also back. Dennis Ward also returns to master and mix the album, as well as playing bass guitar.

A solid and talented line-up who deliver an album not unlike their debut, one that is full of classy melodic hard rock/AOR. Eric Ragno adds his keyboards wizardry throughout, although special mention to his playing on ‘Signs In The Sky’, an instant hit on the ears tune!

A song like ‘Restless Heart’ is the sort of tune Europe should be doing instead of that band’s instantly forgettable past few albums. Full of melody and a short, but sweet, guitar solo. ‘Stay In This Moment’ is one of those songs perfect for blasting out on a summer’s day, whilst ‘Lights & Shadows’ has plenty of guitar heft – plus a cool keys riff.

There are a lot of similar bands out there and as a lifelong fan of all things melodic rock, they can become tiresome very quickly or too cliched in the first place. However, Hearts On Fire have that little bit of musical magic that makes the listener come back for more, plus having a pedigree vocalist like Mark Boals is another bonus.

Hearts On Fire know what they want to achieve musically, and they do it with ease on this album. One for any fan of highly polished melodic hard rock. ****

Album review: MICHAEL ARMSTRONG – 10

Pete Feenstra chatted to Mike Armstrong for Get Ready To ROCK! Radio and playing tracks from the compilation ’10′.  First broadcast 14 September 2025.

Michael Armstrong - 10

Website [Release date 27.06.25]

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of London singer/songwriter, Michael Armstrong’s self-titled debut album. He’s not done too badly since then including performing at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, on stage and shoulder to shoulder with his all-time idol, Paul McCartney.

A songwriting trip to LA hosted by singer-songwriter Ben Folds, which he claims was ‘life changing’. He also performed live with his own band in London’s Pall Mall at the annual New Year’s Day Parade TV concert, broadcast, beamed to a global audience of over 500 million!

’10′ is a collection of some of his favourite album tracks and singles, including previously unavailable radio edits and rarities across his 10 years in the music business. There is also a previously unreleased single, a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Getting Better’. It marks another collaboration with Warren Bennett, and the song was previously only available as a video in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ album, ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’.

Michael Armstrong is one for fellow lovers of well-crafted pop songs that have that timeless feel and sound. Prime example being ‘The Cola Paranoia’, a melodic pop treat and topped off by guest guitarist Elliot Randall of Steely Dan fame.

His version of Billy Joel’s ‘Allentown’ is a proper showstopper, again made that little bit extra special in the slowed down version he sings and the strings arrangement by Simon Lockyear.

One of this reviewer’s personal favourites ‘Radio Days’ makes the album. A perfect piece of pop perfection! Long time collaborator Warren Bennett adds his musical magic to ‘Periscope’, which sounds like a long-lost 10cc or ELO tune or perhaps something Cats In Space would record. ‘Each Other’s Eyes’ also has an ELO vibe – what’s not to love in the layered harmony vocals!

There are a few covers on this fifteen track compilation, and aside from the aforementioned ‘Allen Town’ and ‘Getting Better’, there are spirited takes on Madonna’s ‘True Blue’ (which sounds like the Doobie Brothers!) and the Pretenders’ ‘Don’t’ Get Me Wrong’.

‘10’ is a perfect place to start for new listeners to Michael Armstrong’s music and for existing fans a timely reminder of how many good songs he’s recorded in a relatively short time scale. Timeless pop tunes and we love ‘em! ****

Gig review: ELECTRIC BOYS – Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

ELECTRIC BOYS- Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

Sweden’s Electric Boys must be among the most Anglophile of bands as they constantly seem to be on tour here. They were last in London only last November playing the Camden Club, and I missed that, but have always enjoyed their live shows so on a night with another gig clash, the newly reformed Inglorious had to take second place. The Water Rats is a lovely pub and its back room is one of the more bijou settings  on the London scene, but that meant for a cracking intimate atmosphere.

We were warmed up in a different fashion by support act The Spangles, a punky trio with attitude (although old school punks would have blanched at the long hair of two of them). Though not normally within my wheelhouse, no-nonsense songs like ‘One Good Reason’ . and ‘Back On the Meds Again’ brooked no argument, and had quite a few followers rocking out, while there was plenty of foul mouthed but very endearing banter. Indeed after lead singer and guitarist Ben Marsden ripped into a  reviewer for their comparisons I made a mental note not to do the same.

The Spangles - Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

That pledge didn’t last long as ‘Hold My Hand’, with a pop sensibility blended in, reminded me of Weezer, followed by ‘POTUS’ with bassist Polly Phluid singing in rather angrier fashion. Other songs to make an impact in a spikily entertaining set were ‘ What We Gonna Do Now’ from Ben’s previous band The Main Grains, the snotty ‘Get Over Yourself’ and ‘Alone’.

ELECTRIC BOYS- Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

The Electric Boys came on stage in rather low-key fashion, main man Conny Bloom as dapper as ever in shades, waistcoat and scarf, and even starting to resemble Bob Dylan, black curls under a straw hat.  But they played a series of aces from the start in the openers from each of their original three albums in ‘Psychedelic Eyes’, the swaggering merry go round riff of ‘Groovus Maximus’ and another huge riff in ‘Ready to Believe’, viking looking Slim Martin (Thomander) sharing the guitar duties on that one.

ELECTRIC BOYS- Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

Onto newer songs, ‘Super God’ had an impressive riff though the hooks suffered in comparison with those three openers while ‘I’ve Got A Feelin’ bounced on a very melodic and catchy guitar line from Conny. They began playing the intro to Rush’s ‘Tom Sawyer’ which would have made for an extremely interesting cover version but after a similar snatch of ‘Back in Black’, segued into old favourite ‘Electrified’ with that hypnotically funky riff redolent of seventies Aerosmith.

ELECTRIC BOYS- Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

After a newer song in ‘You Spark My Heart’, Conny asked for requests but after a couple of half-hearted efforts in response, instead the band moved into ‘Rags To Riches’ with those grooves that saw them ride the briefly fashionable funk rock bandwagon that dominated Kerrang! for a couple of years at the turn of nineties in the interregnum between glam and grunge.

ELECTRIC BOYS- Water Rats, London, 10 June 2025

‘Mary in the Mystery World’ got a great reception and as well as its psychedelic stylings there was an unexpected lengthy, very Allmans-like jam between Conny and Slim, who seems to contribute more as a co-lead guitarist  than his predecessor Franco Santunioni and ‘Domestic Blitz’ (sic) saw your correspondent taken by surprise as Conny went into the crowd playing guitar under his nose. It seemed scarcely credible that we were already onto the last song, ‘Angel In An Armoured Suit’-  judging by people around me singing along it’s the best received song from the many albums they have released since reforming in the late 2000s, and was extended with audience participation and a jam.

There were no surprises for the first encore, in ‘All Lips’ n’ Hips’ as people joined in to that signature song that was a guaranteed dance floor filler when I started going to rock clubs. It was followed by an impressive instrumental, but rather disappointingly, after an hour and a quarter, that was it and they headed to the merch stand, leaving me pining for usual set closer ‘Captain Of My Soul’. That aside, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, proving Electric Boys are one of the most enduring and underrated bands around.

EP review: QUINNY & COMPANY – Along the Way

QUINNY & COMPANY – Along the Way

Website [Release date 04.05.25]

Quinny & Company are led by Illinois-born, London-based singer-songwriter Jim Bernard, who is joined by his daughter Sarah Bernard on vocals, Moody Blues flautist Norda Mullen, ex-Suzi Quatro drummer Colin Woolway, Big Country founding member Alan Wishart on guitar, and John Cheal on bass.

Says Jim: “Each song is a snapshot of the people and places we’ve passed along the way. These stories have been growing quietly for years and now it’s time to let them fly.”

Plenty to enjoy musically including the laidback ‘Under the Willow’, which features a wonderfully cool guitar solo. It is worth noting that the playing is of the high quality you’d expect given the pedigree of the musicians involved. Added to that, the production adds a warmth to the band’s overall sound.

Norda Mullen’s melodic flute underpins a heartfelt, dreamy vocal from Sarah on ‘Dreams’, whilst ‘Hold Me Tight’ has a catchy chorus and an upbeat little number.

‘Suzy & Alexander’ is the stand-out for this reviewer, recalling Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in its sound. Again the guitar solos are a thing of beauty.

The six songs on this EP seem to fly by but the good thing is you can listen again! An accomplished and very enjoyable debut EP check them out pronto. ***1/2

Album review : INGLORIOUS – V

Frontiers Music [Release date 06.06.25]

Inglorious’s unimaginatively titled fifth album sees bassman Colin Parkinson and singer Nathan James back together. (They resolved their differences over a pint, where else?)

Joining them in this new iteration of the band are guitarist, Richard (Cradle Of Filth) Shaw and award winning drummer, Henry Rogers.

The new lineup emerges as an altogether more substantial unit, full of renewed vigour, more focused on the classic rock sounds of their earlier album, if occasionally let down by uninventive songwriting and/or arrangements.

Opener, ‘Testify’ is something of a damp squib, spluttering through 4 minutes of overcooked seventies hard rock stylings.

From that point their swaggeringly tough songs act like a hard rock juggernaut. ‘Eat You Alive’, ‘Devil Inside’, ‘Stand’ all stand testament to the band’s rediscovery of their classic rock mojo.

V isn’t a genre exercise, not really. It’s more of an industry standard riff on the familiar. A re-tooling exercise that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

At times, the songs seem underwritten. Several – ‘Say What You Wanna Say’ and ‘Believe’ are prime examples – have hooks you can hang your hat on but the verses are surprisingly tuneless.

Then again, ‘In Your Eyes’ and ‘End Of The Road’ are unadulterated blasts of neatly orchestrated hard rock with a steely spine. And here there’s enough grit and gristle in the mix to make up for lack of nuance and/or subtlety.

Those two tracks in particular show up the album’s frustrating lack of consistency. When it’s good it’s great, but … ***

Album review: HORSLIPS – At The BBC (4-CD/DVD)

HORSLIPS - At The BBC

Madfish [Release date 04.07.25]

As some might have it, Horslips didn’t invent the genre of ‘Celtic Rock’ but they were early proponents. Before their debut album, released in late-1972, there had been the groundbreaking Frenchman Alan Stivell who had blazed a trail first with the live album ‘À L’Olympia’, recorded in February 1972, and then ‘From Celtic Roots’ (1973).

As an aside, Robin Denselow writing in 1975 described Stivell “He is the only academic I know  who can suddenly march on stage playing bagpipes, with a rock band in full cry behind him, and reduce a solemnly attentive concert hall to a rocking and reeling shambles.  It’s a rare and glorious talent.” Denselow mentions Horslips as a band “likely to unwind after a gig with a heavy session of drinking and playing folk tunes on pipes or concertinas.”

This is another handsome set from Madfish although such a fine production shouldn’t be reviewed (as this is) from a 160kbps digital file and without, initially, the liner note pdf. Ho hum.

The definitive collection to coincide with the band’s 50th anniversary in 2022 was also released by Madfish – a whopping 33CD/2-DVD affair that will set you back a whopping £250.

Most of the live radio material in that set, and some TV, was taken from the Irish broadcaster RTE.

‘At The BBC’ therefore brings together genuinely unreleased performances from the 1970s including a couple of “In Concert” shows and later recordings after the band’s real heyday. And their calling card ‘Dearg Doom’ appears six times.

Some of the editing does seem a little sloppy in this release, notably Disc 1, and the second version of ‘Ferdia’s Song’ and ‘More Than You Can Chew’ (the apt title of that massive box set) is more a tribute to Brian Matthew’s voiceover. The quality of the source material is inconsistent as you might expect when remastering radio, TV and film audio. Some off-air (i.e. recorded off a radio set) is used.

Disc 3 features a “broadcast mix” of the band’s Ulster Hall gig in 2011 – cited as one of the band’s best live performances – but the concert has been released in its own right on CD.

Strangely, Disc 4 (a 1979 “bonus disc”) contains unreleased Short Stories, Tall Tales studio mixes from Windmill Lane, the Dublin recording studio. So not exactly At The BBC? Colin Harper’s curator notes provide some explanation (excuse?) but it will be annoying to the Horslips hardcore; I suppose, though, they will shell out for everything.

Harper’s note and Mark Cunningham’s liner note are almost overshadowed by a lengthy scene setting piece from veteran BBC producer Jeff Griffin (where’s the autobiography Jeff?).  And there’s also much credence given to the movers and shakers of this enterprise including tape sleuth Harper, broadcaster Ralph McLean, and engineers Cormac O’Kane and Eroc.  Thankfully there’s also a few words on Johnny Fean.

A DVD brings together the band’s Old Grey Whistle Test output, a 1974 documentary  and some fan-shot footage from the Ulster Hall gig in 2011.  McLean featured the band in a special 50th anniversary show on Radio Ulster following that mammoth box set’s announcement and the filmed version is included here.

A bit like Gentle Giant, Horslips had an ascendancy in the early to mid-1970s but failed to weather changing musical tastes and they also diluted their original USP. They disbanded in 1980, reforming in 2004 with an album of acoustic re-workings. They have reconstituted several times since then although guitarist Johnny Fean died in 2023.

If this collection doesn’t quite deliver what it says on the tin – it could have been a 2-CD/DVD – for those with deep pockets it will complement the earlier box set. And for the daring, another way to discover Horslips although the second and third studio albums are probably all you need. Beware of earlier versions, the definitive remasters were released by Edsel Records post-2000. ***
