Gig review: SAXON, Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

Saxon - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

First a rant, tonight’s gig followed the current trend to start gigs earlier and earlier so they can tag on a club night after. This means that people finishing work at normal times miss out or have to make arrangements so they can make the gig on time.

Tonight for us it meant that we missed Redline totally and missed the first few songs of the Quireboys, why can’t we go back to proper gig times where bands are still playing upto midnight?

Indeed Biff Byford made mention of this saying ‘we’ve got to finish on time as there is a disco on afterwards, why can’t they have the disco first and the bands afterwards’  which was met by a huge cheer of agreement from the crowd.

So onto the night, Redline,  I’ve heard good things about these guys and wanted to see them live, pity we missed them entirely but check them out on the rest of the Saxon tour.

The Quireboys - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

The Quireboys must be the hardest working band around as they never seem to stop touring. Over the past 3 years we have seen them numerous times at festivals and gigs and they never fail to disappoint.

Their rock and roll style always ensures a great atmosphere, this and their undoubted musical abilities means a good show. We missed the first few songs but what we got for the rest of the set was classic Quireboys and most of the songs were from the 1990 ‘A Bit of what you fancy’ with the addition of a new track ‘Too much of a bad thing’ which continues their style forward.

They missed out on one big thing as the gig kicked off at 7pm and they have got the perfect song, ’7 O’clock (it’s time to party)’ but this was kept for the encore.  Spike was on form as usual and his voice sounded as good as ever and he was keeping it nicely lubricated with the odd tipple. Another great set by great band.

Setlist. Tramps and Thieves, There She Goes Again, Misled, Too Much Of A Good Thing, Mona Lisa Smiled, This Is Rock’n'Roll, Hey You, Mother Mary, 7 O’clock

Saxon - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

We last saw Saxon at the same venue about a year ago and were blown away then so tonight we were expecting an equally excellent set, we weren’t disappointed.

This is the ‘Sacrifice’ tour following the release of the same titled album earlier this year and I make it their 20th over the years.  Saxon came on stage at 8pm ish to a roar from the crowd.

The crowd was made up of all ages; from fans from the 70′s/80′s to new fans  and it’s was good to see the tradition of ‘cut-off’ denim jackets filled with band patches still going as I saw a few nice new ones rather than the usual old faded ones.

Saxon - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

They kicked off with ‘Sacrifice’, this track along with the others from the new album are classic Saxon and have a great sound and feel to them. This is not an album for the sake of it but rather one they wanted to write and it comes through in the quality if the material.

The set continues until we get a chance to choose the next song, amongst the shouts there were calls for ‘Crusader’, ‘Motorcycle Man’ and ‘And the Bands Played On’, the latter won out and the band played on. Nibbs Carter apart from playing excellent bass spent most of the night windmilling and would put some of the metal bands to shame.

We even had time for a sing off where Biff split the crowd and away we went, great fun and
participation and a throwback to the fun we used to have a gigs before they all started to get a bit serious.

Saxon - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

With such a back catalogue to call on the night was full of the hits and we even had time for a great drum solo by Nigel Glockler to which Biff commented ‘he’s not done a drum solo for 2 years now’.  ‘Dallas 1pm’ was also a great addition to the night.

So to the end of the main set with ‘Wheels of Steel’ and the entire crowd were singing their heads off.  A night like this could not end without an encore and we were given four songs, amongst them the anthem ‘Denim and Leather’ and ‘Princess Of The Night’ to finish.

What we have seen tonight is a band that is still very much at the top of their game in both writing capabilities and live shows and they look to be having a great time doing it.

Setlist:
Sacrifice, Wheels of Terror, Power and the Glory, Made in Belfast, Rock ‘n’ Roll Gypsy, And the Bands Played On,  I’ve Got to Rock, Night of the Wolf, Conquistador, Drum Solo, Requiem (Acoustic), Guardians of the Tomb, Never Surrender , Ride Like the Wind, Stand Up and Fight, Dallas 1 PM, Motorcycle Man, 747, Wheels of Steel.  Encore: Strong Arm of the Law, Warriors of the Road, Denim and Leather, Princess of the Night

Album review: LEPROUS – Coal

Inside Out www.insideoutmusic.com [Released 20.05.13]

The band’s fifth album and they have flown somewhat under my musical radar, although after hearing this new album they are fast becoming a mainstay on my iPod. There are some really interesting and talented newer bands coming through now and the genre of prog has never been so varied and healthy.

Classed as progressive metal they push musical barriers all over the place and they have a definite air of Devin Townsend about their sound at times, namely in the growls and the massively layered harmony vocals.

The lead song of the album ‘Chronic’ is a beast of a tune, switching from mellow passages through to full on OTT Queen approved pomp. Those Devin Townsend sounds come through on ‘The Cloak’, whilst ‘Foe’ will please lovers of fast, classy metal. ‘Contaminate Me’ has too much emphasis on the growling/screaming vocals, however this will be music nectar to some!

Leprous have plenty of musical ideas, strong melodies and an album that reveals a little more with each play. An album that should see them break into a wider audience.

Album review: CURTIS SALGADO – Soul Shot

Alligator Records

Curtis Salgado is the latest in a raft of American blues artists who are re-exploring their soul roots. And he’s well qualified to do so with a career that has included stints with Robert Cray and The Roomful of Blues. And yet given his work with The Nighthawks and his influence on the Blues Brothers you might have anticipated something a little bluesier.

Fast forward to the present then as he joins the current American soul renaissance or perhaps white boy blues suddenly just got middle aged? Either way Curtis Salgado’s ‘Soul Shot’ is a classy album with 10 selections on which he does exactly what he sets out to do, which is to make the material his own.

Curtis surrounded himself with a top notch band including Mike Finnigan on keys, Jimmy Hughes on piano, plus drummer/producer Tony Braunagel and a horn section led by sax player Joe Sublet that plays a major role in most of the arrangements. The self penned ‘Love Comfort Zone’ is a primary example with a fine vocal performance and deftly arranged horns on a song with radio appeal.

Curtis’s eloquent phrasing brings a wide range of feelings to an album that flows and references soul, funk, blues and gospel.  But if there’s a drawback it is simply that his silky smooth soulful style and some forgettable lyrics fail to sufficiently engage the listener emotionally. And in that respect the inclusion of Johnny Guitar Watson’s ’Strung Out’ is something of a give away, because much like the earlier mid-tempo funky groove of  ‘Nobody But You’ , we’re close to a late 70’s vibe, when soul and funk barely stayed out of the clutches of disco.

On the busy ‘Gettin’ To Know You’, Curtis plays a delightful but belated harp solo which just about rescues a song that isn’t sure about where it’s going. You can understand how Curtis got to this point, as he’s probably looking for a niche to suit his crossover style and he ticks all the relevant boxes, opening with the up tempo ‘What You Gonna Do’, and explores some gentle funk on the afore mentioned ‘Getting To Know You’.

He further adds the sophisticated ‘Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms’, which could have come from a latter day Steely Dan album. His real problem is evident on ‘Let Me Make Love To You’ on which even a mighty vocal can’t overcome some clichéd lyrics on a ballad too far.  Then there’s the cheesy girly bv’s and Stevie Wonder harp on the undulating funk of the self penned ‘He Played His Harmonica’, which is from another era another. You can’t help but feel he should be looking beyond the MOR confines of a song like this.

Happily the CD finishes on a high note with the gospel ‘A Woman Or The Blues’, which includes the poignant line; ‘a man comes to a crossroads deciding which way to go, either way there’s hell to pay, you got to carry the load’, before he delivers a brief, warm toned harp flurry as the album works towards a welcome call and response finale. **** (4/5)

Gig review: GREAT BRITISH ALTERNATIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL, Minehead, 26-28 April 2013

Review and photos by Noel Buckley

Day 1 Friday 26 April

What a difference a year makes, last year we arrived in Butlins in Minehead in the pouring rain, which lasted the whole weekend, this year we arrive in glorious sunshine, which lasts the weekend. A very easy check in eased us nicely into the weekend. The great thing about Minehead is everything is so close, accommodation; dining and the 3 stages are all within a three minute walk.

After a quality meal at The Deck dining hall, we made our way to centre stage for the first band of the weekend, The Salford Jets. The band you may recall had a minor hit back in the day with ‘Who you looking at’ and also features ex Capital Radio man Mike Sweeney. I would have liked to have seen some more of this band, but unfortunately, unlike last year bands on both stages started at the same time.

The Lambrettas - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

So a quick trek to the Reds stage for The Lambrettas, a favourite with the many mods in the crowd, and of course their album ‘Beat Boys In The Jet Age’ is regarded a Mod classic. Doug Sanders who has taken over the main vocals since the sad death of Jez Bird back in 2007 does a great job, proving that sometimes picking up a poison chalice isn’t always a bad thing.

The Ruts - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

The Ruts DC or what I saw of them proved to great entertainment, playing much material from their new album ‘Rhythm Collision vol 2’ and of course ‘Babylon’s Burning’

Eddie & The Hot Rods - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

The reason for cutting The Ruts show short was next door in Reds was a band I have never seen give a poor performance…Eddie & The Hot Rods and tonight they didn’t disappoint. Playing exactly what the crowd wanted to hear….’Do anything you wanna do’ and ‘Gloria’ had most of the chaps in the crowd dad dancing for the first time this weekend. In Barrie Masters the band have one of the best front men in the business?

Day 2 Saturday 27 April

After a hearty fry up, we are joined for the rest of the weekend by Classic Rock’s acclaimed photographer Kevin Nixon.

Today’s entertainment kicked off in the giant Skyline Pavilion Stage.

Ed Tudor Pole - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

Ed Tudor Pole starts the day off. I like Mr Pole, he seems to have a very punky, country style with unlimited energy and wit. With songs like ‘Throwing my baby out of the Bath’ ‘Who Killed Bambi’ and of course ‘Swords of a Thousand Men’ he was the perfect act to start the day of.

The Rezillos - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

Next up in The Skyline is a band I waited a hell of a long time to see…The Rezillos…still with original members Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds they incorporate punk with glam rock. Another outbreak of dad dancing for the classic ‘Somebody’s gonna get their kicked in tonight’ Miss Fife went right to the top of the pops with their version of ‘River deep mountain High’ The Rezillos turned out to be one of the best bands over the weekend.

With a few hours to kill before the evenings events, we popped into the Inn on the Park, for a quick pint….Six pints later, with grumbling stomachs we made our way for another one off Butlins top notch meals.

Simon Townshend - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

With bellies full our little gang of three wobbled over to Reds to watch Pete Townsend’s brother Simon play an acoustic set, a nice laid back set to start the evenings fun off…

Neville Staple - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

The reds stage was now looking like a ghost town as people headed for centre stage for the original rude boy and founder of rap….Neville Staple fronting his own Neville Staples Band. Newer material mixed in with classics from his Specials and Fun Boy Three days had the crowd lapping up every moment. His days of jumping off speakers may be over…..but what is left…is pure class.

Anti Nowhere League - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

One of the great things this festival has to offer is the audience. We have rude boys, punks and skins all mixing together in a party atmosphere’s what, you might say…..well the next band on centre stage couldn’t be further apart musically from The Specials….Anti-Nowhere League are one of punks most influential bands. They delivered a set of pure attitude, but 30 years has passed since they set off to piss everyone off and get banned from everything, they have matured into a highly slick professional outfit. With Animal (Nick Culmer) commanding the stage, ANWL were one of the best bands over the weekend.

Alas with the ANWL being so good I missed Secret Affair and The Truth on the Reds stage, but by all accounts both bands played good sets.

Bad Manners - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

Chants of “You Fat Bastard” echoed around Centre stage, building into a crescendo to greet the next band…Bad Manners. What can you say about this band, they are the perfect party band, and Buster Bloodvessels, larger than life stage persona is worth the admission money alone.

Max Splode helped the show along, covering a few punk classics, and of course ‘Two Pints Of Lager & a Packet of crisps Please’ were giving an airing. As you would expect, ‘Special Brew’ ‘Lip up Fatty’ ‘My Girl Lollipop’ were all in the set…….but it was ‘Can’ that had the whole house jumping…… Bad Manners are a great act and without doubt the band of the day.

DAY 3 Sunday 28 April

As todays entertainment didn’t start till 3pm, our little gang had time on our hands…..The hours were filled with, One Little Piggy going steam train spotting, Two Little Piggy just slept and had no knowledge of our room being deep cleaned. The wise little piggy went to the pub…

Mark E Smith’s The Fall was a band I was looking forward to seeing…but I’m sorry. I just didn’t get it….But judging by the reception they got, I was in a minority of one.

The Beat - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

Returning to a more upbeat mode next, with one of Birmingham’s finest….The Beat…..now with only one original. Ranking Roger, ably backed by his son, Ranking Junior. The Witch is Dead, announced Ranking before kicking off with ‘Stand Down Margaret’…’Mirror In The Bathroom’ ‘To Nice to talk to’ ‘Can’t Get Used To Losing You’ and ‘Hands Off She’s Mine’ has Ranking and the band literally running through a greatest hits show.

One of the great things about festivals like this is being blown away by a band you have never heard of. Jeremiah Ferrari fit this bill perfectly. A young four piece from Manchester, promoting their new CD ‘The Dubby Rock EP’. Influenced by Roots Reggae, Rock, Punk and Ska, they have a great sound. Playing mainly their own material with the odd Bob Marley cover thrown in…..a young band with a big future.

From The Jam - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

As at all festivals it had come to the dreaded clash…Centre Stage…The Blockheads…Reds….From The Jam…..Myself and what seemed like the majority chose Reds, and Mr Foxton. At this point myself and Kevin Nixon had our Spinal Tap moment. The venue was full to bursting, with no chance of getting down to the photo pit; security suggested we went in round the back.

After spending what seemed like hours wandering the Bowells of Butlins, we ended up in a corridor face to face with Bruce Foxto…Just go through that door and you will be by the stage, Bruce told us….It wasn’t quite by the stage, it was on the stage…

Imagine the look of horror on the crowd expecting From The Jam, and getting two doddering old men completely lost…….As for, From The Jam, themselves….They are very simply, awesome.

Russell Hastings does a fine job replacing Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton’s bass lines are thundering, there cannot be many better bass players around than this man? Newer tacks are well received, but it’s The Jam’s classic songs that the crowd want to hear, and of course the band don’t let anyone down by playing them all……As well as paying a touching tribute to Wilko Johnson…For me the band of the weekend…

Glen Matlock - Great British Alternative Festival 2013

With midnight approaching we come to the last band of the weekend…Ex-Sex Pistol/ Rich Kids man Glen Matlock, with his band The Philistines. Over the years Glen has developed into a pure rock n roll performer, and unlike many of his contemporaries at this festival, his set consists of mainly newer stuff. Saying that ‘God Save the Queen’ and ‘Pretty Vacant’ received two of the biggest ovations of the weekend. The Blockheads joined Glen onstage, as he paid homage to The Small Faces, with a spot on version of ‘All or Nothing’.

This, like the Rock n Blues festival in Skegness are fantastic weekends….Good value…good food, clean apartments and above all fair prices at the bar.

If I had one small gripe about this festival. It’s why do Butlins let the stag and hen parties in on the Saturday night.

Ps…To any Butlins executives who may be reading this……..Our little group would be happy to cover any Butlins weekend….you may care to ask us to….

Album Review: WALTER TROUT – Luther’s Blues – A Tribute To Luther Allison

Provogue [Release date: 10.06.13]

‘A Tribute To Luther Allison’ is a triumph of ambition, focus and sheer ability over any semblance of self doubt, as Walter Trout successfully captures Luther Allison’s essential spirit. Such is Trout’s intrinsic feel for Luther’s music and belief in his legacy that he interprets the best of the Chicago blues man’s catalogue with the requisite amount of passion and intensity it deserves.

In his PR notes Walter says he momentarily thought he’d taken on something too big, but his heartfelt performance allays any such fears.

There’s a significant career parallel at the heart of this album. Walter Trout much like Allison before him spends a considerable amount of time working in Europe.  Luther made France his home before his American comeback in ’94 and the two met in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival which provided the location shot for the CD cover. And it is this sense of the blues in exile that permeates the album as a whole.

There are further links in that both artists shared the same label at different times and in James Solberg, Luther had a long term Trout style song-writing guitarist who pushed him towards blues-rock.

Given that Luther’s career spanned West-side Chicago blues, Motown soul, and blues-rock, not to mention a brief collaboration with Johnny Hallyday, the big question is what to leave out. Walter opts for Luther’s fully formed mid-90’s material with ‘Reckless’ and ‘Blue Streak’ providing the meat in the sandwich. He also adds a brace from ‘Soul Fixin’ Man’ – aka ‘Bad Love’ – and 1987’s ‘Rich Man’ to provide balance. The album finishes cleverly with Walter’s ripping self- penned ode to his hero on ‘When Luther Played The Blues’. Perhaps only the omission of ‘Serious’ is the one glaring omission on a well thought out project.

The album benefits from solid pre-prep work. The considered arrangements and thoughtful vocal attacks mirror Luther’s lyrical meaning and co-producer’s Eric Corne’s bright mix captures the snap. And in those moments when Walter engulfs himself in emotive songs like ‘Pain In The Streets’ his snakelike wiry guitar lines and delicate vibrato does his talking for him.

Issued by Provogue as part of The Classic Blues Series, ‘A Tribute To Luther Allison’ showcases Luther’s development as a blues man with real presence. Walter successfully searches for Allison’s intensity and wrings out every last drop of passion with searing guitar work in an amalgam of all the elements that come naturally to him.

In going to the source material Walter cleverly beefs up the core riffs, alternating his own busy note flurries with Luther’s single note attacks. He explores deeply honed solos over a pulsating rhythm track in a blend of shuffles, soulful vocals, deep-blues and occasional funk.

The alcohol fuelled tale of ‘Cherry Red Wine’ is close to his heart and well suited to his impassioned style, while ‘Bad Love’ lights the fuse, just as it used to do in Luther live shows. Walter’s commanding vocal on the live in the studio take is bolstered by the great rhythm section of Michael Leasure and Rick Knapp, who do him proud on a frisson busting track of super charged intensity.

Trout’s phrasing conveys the emotional turmoil of the songs and he adds a soaring solo that would make Luther smile and annoy the kind of blues purists who always denied Allison’s role as a blues-rock crossover artist.

‘Move From The Hood’ is the most radical arrangement of all, as Walter transforms it into a power shuffle. He reaches for new levels of real intensity with the self-help integrity of ‘Big City’, on an archetypal Allison slow-grind topped by a coruscating solo.

Luther’s son Bernard Allison joins Walter on a jammed out duet ‘Low Down & Dirty, which features contrasting slide guitar and beefy tones, before gets down low on his own with some beautifully wrought notes on ‘Pain In the Streets’. And he saves his best vocal for the heartfelt ‘Freedom’.

This is an impressive album that fully realises its lofty ambitions of ‘reigniting interest in Luther’s work’. It’s music with a Chicago heart and a gospel soul, played by a West Coast blues-rock guitarist steeped in New Jersey intensity. Trout proves to be the ideal conduit for Luther’s contemporary take on traditional blues.

Truth be told, Luther Allison didn’t start writing great songs until the latter part of his career, and Walter Trout presents a coherent and superbly played snap-shot of one of the great unsung heroes of modern blues era. ****(4/5)

Gig review: SPOCK’S BEARD – The Garage, London, 7 May 2013

A very healthy turn out for a Tuesday night gig, swelled slightly by those here to see Sound Of Contact (including Marillion’s guitarist Steve Rothery). Sadly I only caught the tail end of opener’s Beardfish’s set who went down well with the crowd.

Next up were Sound Of Contact, a new band and signing to Inside Out featuring Simon Collins (he has a rather famous dad!), keyboards player Dave Kerzner, bassist Matt Dorsey (who looked too cool to be in a prog band), guitarist John Wesley (Porcupine Tree/Fish) and District 97’s drummer Jonathan Schang. The latter warming up no doubt for his band’s appearance at the Cleber8.2 festival this weekend in Kingston.

The set was bookended by two instrumentals with Simon Collins taking the drum stool for these. Musically they have a big emphasis on melody, slightly laid back playing with plenty of slow guitar solos and not a million miles away from the sound of Marillion and Enchant. Based on tonight’s performance their debut release will be worth seeking out.

If I have one criticism tonight it is having two support bands on. Yes its good exposure for the support bands but when a band like Spock’s Beard have eleven albums to compile a set list from I would have preferred a longer Spock’s Beard set and just the one support band.

Spock’s Beard are one of those bands lucky enough to be able to play the majority of their new album, the rather good ‘Brief Nocturnes & Dreamless Sleep’, without fans moaning and wanting only the classic songs played. In fact ‘Something Very Strange’ and ‘I Know Your Secret’ started their set off in fine style.

New boy Ted Leonard is the perfect fit for the band, both vocally and as a frontman, working the crowd well, plus indulging in some friendly onstage banter with fellow band members. Along with touring drummer Jimmy Keegan (now a permanent member) these two have revitalised the band and the band look set to enjoy a period of stability now.

Fans of the older albums had ‘Crack The Sky’, ‘Hiding Out’ and the harmony filled ‘The Distance To The Sun’ to enjoy. The band’s five piece harmonies really are spot on as the latter song and ‘Afterthoughts’ highlighted amply.

Alan Morse certainly seemed to be having a ball on stage as did keyboards wizard and live wire Ryo Okumoto. He managed to get a football chant going a couple of times based on ‘Ryo’ and his encore finale saw him clambering aboard his keyboard racks for some, err, novel stretching exercises. This is the band’s strength for me as they have wonderful musicianship and songs, however they don’t take themselves too seriously and inject an element of fun as and when required into the live setting.

By the time we reached the encore of ‘Go The Way You Go’ the band were in full jamming mode and I am pretty sure they would have loved to have played on had time permitted. One of the best progressive rock bands out there at the moment, both on album and in a live setting.

Album Review – LORD – Digital Lies

Dominus Records (Release date – out now)

Lord started out life as Dungeon in the depths of the Australian outback. They relocated to Sydney and had a successful career, releasing 9 albums and finding an audience across Australia and beyond, supporting the likes of Megadeth, Edguy, Nightwish, Opeth and more.

Back in 2005 though the Dungeon moniker was dropped in favour of Lord but the band carried on as before . Digital Lies is Lord’s fifth album and it finds the band continuing with their fine mix of power metal, thrash and melodic rock.

The disc kicks off in fine style with ‘Incipio’ leading into ‘Betrayal Blind’ which is a fine power metal track riding along on a wave of double bass drums and solid riffage.  Lord Tim does a fine job on vocals and he, along with the other guitarist, Mark Furtner, play some fine guitar throughout, trading solos on most tracks.

All tracks on the album are well written and it is obvious that the guys have been together for a long time. ‘Walk Away’ and ‘The Last Encore’ were two tracks that really caught my ear, both are first class, hard rocking songs.

‘Digital Lies’ is a fine album that will cement Lord as a big league act across Australia and beyond. If you like a bit of power metal then this one is worth tracking down for a blast.

Album review – MICHAEL SHEPHERD BAND – II

Self Release (Release date – out now)

There aren’t many rock bands from Luxembourg that spring to mind, in fact the Michael Shepherd Band could well be the first I have heard of. The band have been together for a number of years, releasing their first album back in in 2002, so is this album worth a 10 year wait?

The answer is yes and no. The band are good no doubt about that, they play a fine, AOR laden, classic rock which I imagine would have lighters held aloft in stadiums worldwide given half a chance. Musically the band sound like a mix of Journey, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy and Lynyrd Skynyrd with all the classic rock hallmarks in place, solid rock tracks, big ballads, great harmonies and excellent guitar work.

The problem though is that all this has been done before back in the late 70’s and 80’s by the bands that the guys have modelled themselves on. Not only that but all of the bands mentioned are still on the road and producing the goods live night after night, the question is then why would you choose a homage to the real thing when you can have the real thing instead?

So, essentially this is a good album which also contains a cover version of Christina Aguilera’s hit ‘Beautiful’ which they actually make a good fist of but not a ‘must have’. Give them a listen though as they may be Luxembourg’s only rock export.  ***

Album review: MAJESTIC – V.O.Z.

Self-released [Release date 17.12.12]

In these days of risible TV talent shows where the sole ambition of the participants is the acquisition of fame and fortune (however transient that may be), the word ‘genius’ is frequently bandied about to describe many of the screaming singers, lounge-room crooners and various other one-trick ponies.

A consequence of this is that musicians, proper musicians who genuinely qualify for said epithet, toil away in relative obscurity, plying their trade to a miniscule cognicent fanbase for small reward.

One such is Jeff Hamel, multi-instrumentalist leader of Minneapolis-based progressive rock band Majestic, whose latest outing, the double album ‘V.O.Z.’, is nothing short of a masterpiece.

From the dreamy opening instrumental ‘In Memory Of…’ and its segue into the startling piano figure of ‘VOZ 1 – New World’ it is immediately apparent that this is something more than a bit special.

In fact, ‘New World’ is just one of the myriad of highlights on this sprawling epic, where Hamel’s peerless keyboard wizardry is only challenged for supremacy by his stunning guitar work. To have one of these skills would satisfy most aspirants. Having both just smacks of greed. Oh, and he plays bass as well.

One of the masterstrokes here is the use of four different vocalists, two male, two female, who lend differing textures to the tracks as things progress.

The album’s delights unfold over the nearly two hours to leave the listener absolutely gobsmacked by the end.

Some of the progressions from gossamer-like acoustic interludes to heavy rock mayhem, from dreamy keyboard arpeggios to pounding exuberance and all stations east are simply jaw-dropping and all underpinned not only by sublime musicianship of the highest order but also an educated and insightful libretto.

Jeff Hamel (remember the name) and Majestic have put together an absolute belter of an album here which deserves to be heard by a much wider audience than it will probably get – a great shame when you consider some of the drivel that does get an audience.   *****

Album review: CITY REIGN – Another Step

Car Boot Records

The heavy guitar lead “Another Step”is the debut album from Manchester quartet City Reign, and is an expressive burst of story, doing indie how indie should be done.

The tracks were all recorded in Salford’s Scared Trinity Church, so the songs have a striking natural reverb; the cymbals don’t crash, they shatter, and the vocals wrap around your ears like sharp ribbons. This works in the band’s favour especially so in the stripped back “Retaliate”, which has a much more vulnerable sound compared to the other instrumentally layered songs; it’s not perfect vocally, but the breaks in Bull’s voice are so emotionally truthful that it doesn’t really matter.

The record itself is both open and intimate – from the metaphorical lyrics of “Anchor” to the simple and catchy hook “Say want you want, I’m not listening…” in “Daybreak”, making it more accessible to those ears not so fond of indie, unlike the pretentiously “hipster” music from most bands in the genre.

One of City Reign’s strengths is how the band successfully builds up to each song without becoming monotonous or boring. “Ahead Of Ideas” accumulates slowly to a momentous breakdown of sound, bursting with atmosphere and passion.

Another Step might be more indie than most of you would like to think about, but those of us who don’t mind the odd Oasis number; it’s a definite promising start to the band’s music career.  ***1/2

Album review: H.I.M. – Tears On Tape

Cooking Vinyl

His Infernal Majesty aren’t the sort of band to go reinventing themselves for every album, and Tears On Tape pretty much follows the usual musical formula found in some of their older records, but Ville Valo and co. really know what they do well, and hell does this album stick to the band’s gothic metal brilliance!

Reminiscent of tracks found in “Deep Shadows” and “Dark Light”, Tears On Tape features beautiful haunting melodies and epic orchestral instrumentals, a little more “love metal” than the more aggressive “Screamworks” from 2009.

As per usual, most of the songs are very repetitive and feature acoustic bridges, vocal endings and 80’s sounding keyboard tunes, however there are a couple new moves the band pull; “Drawn and Quartered” is definitely one of the most poignant tracks in the mix, with lyrics enough to send shivers up your spine; a truly unnerving love song. The title track also unusually builds up to a choir-y highpoint, a sure anthem for live shows.

Composed like a mixtape, the record is the first of HIM’s to feature musical interludes; from the eerie “Unleash The Red” to the ambient and violent unwind of “Lucifer’s Chorale”, the album is constantly juxtaposing between a bittersweet collection of twisted tales of romance and sadness until the “death scene” in “Kiss The Void” where the tape ends.

It might have their typical distorted guitar riffs and Valo’s legendarily large vocal range, but the Helsinki group’s eighthinstalment is in no way tedious and the band have very much made a crowd pleaser with this one, a melodramatic magnum opus.  ****

Gig review: DEMON – Winking Man, Leek, Staffs, 4 May 2013

This was a rare UK appearance and a fairly low key gig in Demon’s home town of Leek which had been billed as part of the “Leek Arts Festival 2013”. The Winking Man pub is in the middle of nowhere on the A53 Leek to Buxton road and claims to have the highest function room in England at 1500 feet above sea level.

Support for the evening was by Black Tiger, a local band who played a set of classic rock covers including “The Zoo”, “Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be”, “Hell Bent For Leather”, “Doctor Doctor” and “Running Free”. Fairly enjoyable set but could have done without the “Rebel Yell” cover…

The gathered crowd of only around 200 was purely here for Demon though. No one was disappointed – Demon played a blinder from start to finish. An evening of proper classic rock music ensued. Opening with “Wonderland”, Demon proceeded through a classic set focused mainly on their early eighties output with only “Fill Your Head With Rock” (tribute to the Sweden Rock Festival) and title track “Unbroken” being aired from last year’s release. “Don’t Beak The Circle”, “Night Of The Demon”, the emotive “Remembrance Day” and the superb “Blackheath” all went down a storm.

Band leader Dave Hill seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself and was on top form with vocals and facial expressions throughout. Guitarists David Cotterill and the forever “hatted” Paul Hume could not be faulted and it was great to see Ray Walmsley back in the band, though now on bass.

Neil Ogden was a powerhouse on the drums even having to borrow a snare drum from the support band after breaking his. Karl Waye was hidden from my view on keyboards but again could not be faulted – Dave Hill joked that he wasn’t even born when the early stuff was written.

Demon have been unfairly dismissed by the UK press throughout their long career and maybe the name still puts people off…Dave Hill moaned a few times about the UK press ignoring them and assuming they died back in the early eighties. Germany and Sweden have always welcomed Demon more openly than their home land which is truly a shame…still they are proud to be British and holding up the flag…shame they didn’t play “England’s Glory” though…

Enjoyable evening was had by all.

Album review: KINGDOM COME – Outlier

Kingdom Come - Outlier

SPV www.spv.de [Release date: 29.04.13]

Kingdom Come’s new “Outlier” album could more accurately be credited as a Lenny Wolf solo effort as the band’s main man handles everything bar the guitar solos, these being provided by Eric Forster. Wolf also engineered, mixed and produced the album in his own Hamburg studio, and he has not made a bad job of it as “Outlier” mixes the classic Kingdom Come sound with a new modern direction for the band.

Opening track, and the album’s debut single, “God Does Not Sing Our Song” has gained a fair bit of radio airplay and finds the band sounding fresh and current, as does “Such a Shame” and ”Rough Ride Ralleye” the latter giving a nod to early ‘90’s U2.

“Let The Silence Talk” is standard Kingdom Come with jagged modern guitar, “The Trap Is Alive” is exactly what you would expect from the band and “Don’t Want You To Wait” has an overshadowing feel of doom and almost staggers like a wounded beast but with its stabs of guitar and off kilter drums is inoffensive enough to the ears.

Overall “Outlier” is a good album and one that should re-engage Kingdom Come with its audience, Wolf intended this to begin a new chapter for the band it certainly deserves to do just that.

Book review: AC/DC – The Early Years with Bon Scott by Neil Daniels

Independent Music Press

Engaging, easy to read and authoritve, Neil Daniels’ latest offering “AC/DC- The Early Years with Bon Scott” is essential reading for fans of the band. Having grown up watching a Brian Johnson fronted AC/DC and only hearing Scott on record, this book almost brings the band’s earlier line-up to life and is a great insight into their rise to worldwide success.

Covering the years from the bands formation in 1973 up to Bon Scott’s untimely death in 1980, and a further section on 1980/81 and the “Back In Black” album, the book also includes some great photos.

The book features a foreword by Uriah Heep’s Mick Box and afterword’s by Bruce Kulick and Doro Pesch in addition to a comprehensive discography, list of tours and timeline as well as an appendix with a truncated history of the bands post-Scott years.

Album review: TOM KEIFER – The Way Life Goes

Tom Kiefer - The Way Life Goes

Merovee Records [Release date 29.04.13]

For me, Cinderella always stood head and shoulders above the general hair metal bands that they would unfairly be lumped in with. With grittier songs, real feeling subject material and a more mature outlook the band released four studio albums that went on to sell over fifteen million copies.

Splitting up in 1995 and consequently reforming in 1997, alleged legal wrangles has meant that new material has not been forthcoming from the band  and so we now come to front man Tom Keifer’s long awaited debut solo album “The Way Life Goes”.

Having worked on the album since 2003, this is Keifer’s first new material since Cinderella released “Still Climbing” in 1994. The songs are top quality and unmistakably Tom Keifer, albeit with healthy influences of Aerosmith, Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones, and considering the issues he has had with his voice over the last few years, the vocals sound great.

Opening track, and current single, “Solid Ground” is unsurprisingly Cinderella like and the album balances ballads and upbeat tracks nicely. The Stones like “Cold Day In Hell” is hands down one of the best things I have heard this year whilst ode to Prozac “Mood Elevator” is everything that Aerosmith couldn’t get away with these days.

That Stonesy feel appears again on “Ain’t That A Bitch”- a funkier track with added stabs of Hammond B3- and “Babylon”. “You Showed Me” is a raw, bluesy piano led ballad in the tradition of Aerosmith and the album’s title track “The Way Life Goes” also has a nice bluesy feel to it. Aerosmith influences are also evident on “A Different Light” and “Fools Paradise” whilst echoes of Rod Stewart can be heard on the piano heavy “”Thick and Thin” and The Faces’ feeling “The Flower Song”.

There is a heavier, fresh feel to “Welcome To My Mind”, the very catchy “It’s Not Enough” is pure and simple Cinderella for the 21st Century and “Ask Me Yesterday” is more a country love song than a ballad.

“The Way Life Goes” is one hell of an album and by far my favourite release of the year so far- combining country, blues and rock it could be Keifer’s very own “Exile on Main Street”. All we need now are some European tour dates …  *****

Quick plays: KILL FOR EDEN, CIRCA, MELINDA ORTNER

KILL FOR EDEN – S/T

www.killforeden.com

Interestingly, anyone I have mentioned West London band Kill For Eden to has enthusiastically told me how good they are and the general feeling is that their debut, and self titled, album should do very well for the band.

The album is packed with catchy hooks, great production and solid musicianship. Front woman Lyla D’Souza’s powerful, gritty vocals lay somewhere between Sass Jordan, Garbage’s Shirley Manson and for sheer power Bonnie Tyler whilst the band’s influences can be identified as The Cult, Garbage and Deep Purple amongst others.

Highlights amongst the album’s 14 tracks include the radio mix of “Kerosene”, “The Evil That Men Do”, “Over & Over” and “Living On Mars” and it’s safe to say that the whole thing is held together by guitarists Dave Garfield and Andrea Basiola.

If you get a chance to catch the band live do as their live show promises to be something special.

CIRCA – Live from Here, There and Everywhere

Glassville Records (Released 10th June)

Circa may not instantly be a recognisable band’s name but the members will be as the line-up includes former Yes members Billy Sherwood (also a member of World Trade) and Tony Kaye. Completing the line-up are Rick Tierney (bass) and Scott Connor (drums). The band has released four studio albums to date and this double CD marks their first live album. Kaye and Sherwood also had a brief foray in Yoso which featured former Toto vocalist Bobby Kimball.

You can’t fault the musicianship on display and the Yes feel to ‘And So On’ and ‘Ever Changing World’ with its neat vocals and keyboards are undoubted highlights. There are plenty of long instrumental passages, however sometimes the melodies can get lost in a sea of soloing.

One for fans of Billy Sherwood’s work, featuring a good quality sound throughout.

Melinda Ortner – I Wanna Be OK

Ziggy Popular Music

Melinda Ortner is a totally new name to me. She was born and raised in California according to the PR literature and had a top 100 hit in Finland together with a song featured on “American Pie : Book of Love”…sounds a bit like the PR company trying too hard…

“I Wanna Be OK” is the debut full album from Melinda who released the “Strangers” EP last year and quite an impressive release it is. Melinda reminds me of a mix between Tori Amos and KT Tunstall with a bit of Imelda May and even Beth Gibbons thrown into the mix.

The album never drags from opener “Wait Another Day” complete with cello and weird drumbeat through the almost Portishead “I Wanna Be OK”, the almost heavy “The Beauty in Me” and the distinctly odd Casio keyboard featuring “Say Those Things”.

Melinda states “the higher up you are, the more it’s gonna hurt coming down”. Well based on this release she is definitely on the way up and it’s likely to be a long time before there is a risk of her coming down!

Enjoyable quirky release.

Album review: TIME GRID – Life

Open Your Eyes Records [Release date: 21.01.13]

Time Grid is French/Swiss prog metal band who have taken nearly a decade to realise their musical vision. ‘Life’ is by no means an unblemished slice of prog metal, but it’s an album full of conviction, fashioned against a background of changing band members, different studios and mixes etc. The end result is a prog metal crossover album that might gain them some new fans even if they do sometimes fall short of their own lofty ambitions.

Formed in 2001 by current members guitarist Steve Huber and drummer Remi Pussier, the current band fell into place in 2009 when they started work on an album that at its best impresses with confident playing but contains far too many impenetrable lyrics. At times they come close to the melodic sweep of say Erik Norlander Rocket Scientists but without the sophisticated production.

‘Life’ is a prog metal album in search of thematic substance. ‘Deceit’ is an opening duet that features Mathias Reusser and Laetitia Fontannaz. It’s played by a musically inspired band with great chops in search of a decent arrangement. Mathias’s vocals take over on a tale of power, domination and control, but he struggles with a poor mix and a hyper guitar line that ironically mirrors the song’s theme of domination.

It’s the first of several issues on a patchy album that flatters to deceive. The incredible percussive break on ‘Deceit’ for example, leads to a sudden drop-down but the brief guitar shred sounds like a drop-in rather than a building block in musical progression.

‘Life’ has plenty of distorted guitar riffs, dazzling layered keyboards and synth squalls but the songs fail to match the band’s instrumental ability.  The heartfelt ‘Emptiness’ starts out as a duet and explodes into a complex melange of metal riffs, dazzling synths and an uplifting melody line, but it’s ultimately an overwrought piece that loose its way after mid section harmony vocal.

‘Me’ is a fairytale duet full of a quiet /loud dynamics on which the lyrical depth is lost in translation , while ‘Premices’ (sic) is an instrumental that ebbs and flows. It’s anchored by Remi Poussier percussive groove and is full of sharp riffs complex rhythmic shifts, and dazzling solos.

The band is at its best when they concentrate mainly on the music. On ‘Blind’ they benefit from a much better arrangement with contrasting vocal lines, a proggy feel and a flowing melody.  ’Zephir’ in contrast, is a piano/vocal-led poetic love song with lyrics that don’t quite achieve their intended meaning.

Perhaps like Procol Harum and King Crimson before them, Time Grid could do with an outside lyricist or at the least someone to elucidate a song’s meaning.

At times ‘Life’ sounds as if it’s trapped by a genre that is meant to be liberating. But if the concepts and themes aren’t strong enough to stand up to rigorous scrutiny, the music certainly does, with some sculptured melodies, layered keyboards and steely riffs that rise above shifting time changes.

There’s often too much going on, with the lack of clarity leading them down a musical cul-de-sac, but then they unexpectedly rise again with hard riffs, melodic motifs and a good use of dynamics.

‘Life’ is a patchwork quilt of music ideas and influences packed with plenty of melodies and intense solos to enjoy, but sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to find them. *** (3/5)

Album review: CHASING VIOLETS – Jade Hearts

Chasing Violets - Jade Hearts

AOR Records [Release date 14.06.13]

I think producer Frederic Slama compromised Chasing Violets’ debut album ‘Outside Heaven’ (2012) by re-using the songs (and the backing tracks) for his own project album ‘LA Temptation’.

Slama is a respected LA-based AOR mover and shaker but I have to say – regardless of that blatant recycling – his writing and production is still the weak link here.  The Fontaine sisters look lovely but there is still an issue with their vocals and delivery against somewhat trite play-it-by-numbers session tracks.

The opener ‘The Main Attraction’ – which should arguably be one of the strongest offerings to hook in the jaded listener – is a case in point.  The rockier approach we were promised is more like a semi-Eurovision sing-a-long and somewhat vapid.  ‘Web Of Lies’ is more of the same.  There is an extended guitar play-out but the mix is very flat and the metronomic  drums and rhythm guitar far too lightweight.

And as we said about the debut, having Melissa and Sarah sharing the vocals (that is, duetting on each track) doesn’t really work when one is evidently stronger than the other (Melissa?).  Maybe to compensate – depending on your viewpoint – several male vocalists have been retained for this album including Goran Edman and Paul Sabu.

There is an almighty holler at the start of ‘A Shot In The Dark’ as if to tell the world that the girls can do rawk but it soon becomes the same old lightweight ear candy.  And a song like ‘Silent Victory’ re-purposes the opener’s hackneyed rhythm track whilst reprising the spirit of ‘You’re My Obsession’ on the girls’ debut album.  This is very lazy songwriting.  Oh and by the way, ‘Silent Victory’ was on Slama’s LA Temptation album so the recycling goes on.

The song ‘Jade Hearts’ – the title track dammit – sums up everything that is wrong with this album, it really does sound like the girls are down their local wine bar with some cod-Journey backing tracks on the karaoke machine.

Part of the problem is, again, the songwriting and the soft production values.  If the girls wanted to make this sound rockier surely they would have asked Slama to beef up those guitars and toughen up another limp, stereotypical, AOR mix?  My guess is that they are in awe of their mentor and not a bad word is spoken.

But, if you want to really understand what I am on about just take a listen to the 7 minute (yes 7-minute) ‘The Scarlet Nymph’.   I rest my case.

Naturally, the press handout trumpets: ‘Jade Hearts is the perfect illustration of what pure AOR is all about’.  Er, right.  The sad truth is – like the debut – I am sure this album will be greeted with open arms amongst the AOR fraternity (and probably with open trousers when some males view the album cover), but not even a seasoned, AOR veteran like the redoubtable Tommy Denander can rescue this one.  **

Album review: CTHULHU RISE – 42

Cthulhu Rise

Musea Records

This incredible heavy but inventive album may sometimes border on the cacophonous as it blasts away the cobwebs of complacency with monumental fractured riffs, but the underlying fast changing time signatures, unrelenting metal dirge (sludge metal anybody?) and adventurous free-form jazz lines are very familiar.

Kiev’s Cthulhu Rise presumably takes the first part of its name from HP Hovercraft’s mythical metal armoured dragon slayers. If so, it explains the incredible barrage of sound, fractured guitar lines and stabbing riffs interwoven with piano and moog lines.

The opening ‘Opus 24’- an arresting mixture of mathcore with proggy jazz elements – sets the standard for the rest of an relentless album. ‘42’ is music with a 4 and half decade time span. Sometimes a piece starts with a contemporary bite and then suddenly we’re back in the early 70’s world of jazz rock. There’s even a short fusion synth solo, but for the most part all ten opuses (24- 29, but not strictly chronologically numbered) are a mish-mash of stop-start, bone crunching machine gun riffs.

The feverish piano lines fight to find the space to rise above the metallic drone that sometimes dwarfs the arrangements. I say arrangements, but in fairness there are moments when the band appear to be in truly improv mode, as one line is abruptly abandoned while another takes over, as the rhythm section lay downs a stuttering rhythmic backdrop to what the band call alternative metal.

Whatever the label, metal fans will enjoy the intense riffs, the incredible percussive drive and the in the moment bluster that for the most part makes you forget its instrumental music.

If Dillinger Escape Plan formulated the blueprint for mathcore then this motley crew have added disguised proggy elements – the darker side of Robert Fripp – and are unafraid to see where their jazzy soloing takes them.

It’s challenging stuff and once the band has gripped you with their incredible barrage of sound, they lead you on a musical joy ride. The constant interwoven battles, the sudden spiralling solos, little tension building moments and their resolution all demand your attention. ‘42’ is thunderous space filling supercharged music

Different influences abound, from Zappa guitar motifs and his manic time signatures to the organ led ELP influence on ‘Opus 23’, before it suddenly drops down to a piano-led jazz groove over a tic-tic rhythm.

At times the band’s dynamic interplay is breathtaking as guitarist Ivan Serdyuk and pianist Stanislav Bobritskiy trade bristling licks over Andy Pristchenko aggressive cymbal barrage. On other occasions such as the ‘Opus 26’ and ‘27’ the band are in danger of suffocating under the weight of their own heavy creation. On ‘Opus 27’ the organ and guitar interplay is again impressive, but the relentless machine gun guitar lines become a bit wearing.

‘Opus 28’ could have been an outtake from Beefheart’s ‘Trout Mask Replica’ as it has the same sort of intensity, while the rapid bass intro of ‘Opus 29’ has more of a jazzy feel in spite of the growling fractured guitar riffs.

There’s a gorgeous descending piano line that shapes the piece before the band jam with Stanislaw repeating the same line almost as signal for another layer of repeated guitar riffs.  He swaps to moog synthesizer to wrack up some King Crimson style tension before an unexpected mini bass solo from Yury Demirskiy, on a track that fairly explodes with ideas and free-form improvisation.

Cthulhu Rise pull the joker from the pack with the jazzy bonus track ‘Opus 31’ which suggest that having undertaken several exhilarating musical excursions they are happy enough to sign off with a surprisingly mellow bass-led ending to a raucous, committed and very inventive record. **** (4/5)

News: SCHEMATA THEORY’s new album ‘Dry Lung Rhetoric’ out in June

‘Dry Lung Rhetoric’

ABAF Records, June 3.

‘A beautiful blend of progressive textures and soaring vocal arrangements.’ – TheNewReview

‘Purely sensational music and experimentation.’- Throwing Shapes Media & Reviews

“Dry Lung Rhetoric is a calling card from a band destined for great things, combining melody, aggression, attitude and ambition to an exhilarating effect.” – OneMetal.com

Bursting onto the UK metal/prog-metal scene all guns blazing, energetic new Reading-based six-piece Schemata Theory prepare to unleash their explosive debut album ‘Dry Lung Rhetoric’ on June 3.

The album, which was recorded at the renowned Stakeout Studios and produced by Jason Wilcock (FightstarWe Are The OceanThe Ghost of A Thousand), features 11 tracks and includes a guest appearance from Mutiny Within’s Chris Clancy on concluding final trackThe Final Breath’.

Combining many aspects of the metal genre, Dry Lung Rhetoric fuses classic thrash riffing, progressive technical instrumental passages, melodic hooks and soaring choruses, creating a set of songs that are accessible, original and thought provoking.

From the groove-metal orientated Perish or Prevail’ to the piano driven ballad Your Belief’, through to the more commercially melodic ‘Drones’ and catchy lead single ‘A Complex Slate’, the album is an experimental mix of eclectic metal infusions with the influence of bands such as Dream Theater and Metallica being prominent in the complex song structures, technical riffs and prominent guitar solos.

The message behind the album is an interesting one.  “The album’s themes communicate acknowledgement of a sleeping world needing to wake up,” explains psychology graduate and vocalist Myles Dyer.  “With so much evidently in crisis on this planet, the question that must be asked is ‘How much longer can we go on turning a blind eye?’”

The band has released an impressive and eye-catching video for lead single ‘A Complex Slate’, which has already gained in excess of 45,000 views.

View the video here: http://youtu.be/0gLG_KCY_D0

The single is available to download now on iTunes.

Ahead of the release the Schemata Theory will play a special London showcase event at Camden Barfly on May 17 alongside fellow new up-and-comers Hybris + Deadly Circus Fire.

Album review: I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. – Mystery Drug

I See Hawks In L.A.

Blue Rose Records [Release date: 01.05.13]

Alt-country outfit I See Hawks In L.A. are “dabblers” says their guitarist Paul Lacques. “There really are about 20 different ways to chop up country roots music”, he adds, while singer Rob Waller summarizes the band as “A country fruit salad”

On ‘Mystery Drug’ The Hawks explore the hyphen separating Alt. and Country, often lazily described as Americana. Their ability to anchor themselves in traditional musical forms while simultaneously exploring unexpected territories makes them different from the norm.

The L.A. based band make every lyric and nuance count, mainly via Rob Waller’s trad-  country baritone which often disguises perceptive and humorous lyrics to make them sound like a cowboy song. Conversely MOR country songs find new layers of substance and meaning via rich harmonies and delicate instrumentation.

The band’s restless musical landscape matches its lyrical diversity. They shift from the eco-political and the spurious to the lovelorn and the poetic, played out over intricate sounds, layered harmonies and occasional hooks. On the sparkling finish to ‘Oklahoma’s Going Dry’, there’s even an ascending psychedelic wash with a Jerry Garcia style guitar line.

As befits their left field focus, the band is signed to a German label as the latest in a never ending trail of odd ball So-Co bands all too happy to transpose their psyche-country imagery to a receptive mainland European audience.

Truth be told, you do have to have a feel for roots music if not country, to get the best out of this album. Rob’s baritone, several sonorous pedal steel lines and glistening harmonies are the stuff of country music, even if the subject matter would be unrecognizable to die-hard Nashville fans.

Curious then, that amidst some beautiful sculptured songs the title track is relatively unremarkable but for the brooding harmonies and lyrical intent. Similarly ‘Yesterday’s Coffee’ is a familiar country tinged love song but with sudden uplifting harmonies.

The slide-led ‘The Beauty Of The Better States’ is different again, being structurally influenced by Dylan. It mixes part alliteration with an exclamatory Zen like delineation of the interconnectedness of all things: “The burning fucking tickle fickle finger in the fire, The higher things and the lower things, It’s a moral case, For existence”.

The subject matter changes as quickly and unexpectedly as some of the music. ‘Mystery Drug’ is an album that doesn’t so much redefine alt-country and simply let it breathe with unfettered expectation. The result is an album that constantly surprises and rarely disappoints in between moments of real revelation.

The wistful irony of ‘We Could All Be In Laughlin Tonight’ (Nevada’s third biggest gambling city) brings a wry smile, while the tic-toc country rock of ‘Sky Island’ is aligned to some vivid geographic imagery in which the words hover, evoke and interweave with melodic harmonies.

Waller’s wearisome vocal has echoes of Dead Can Dance, as he voices universal feelings on an album highlight. The poignant ‘If You Remind Me’ is no less impressive and the humorous ‘My Local Merchants’ comes embedded with the killer couplet: “On a cold bitter night that found me drifting from reality, They saved me with their market driven conviviality”.

The album smolders, shines, sparkles and ultimately stays with you over time. The memorable melodies and chiming tones offset Waller’s unwavering baritone. It’s a tightly wrapped package but delivered with an unhurried sense of purpose, time and meaning. Contrasting songs and diverse subject matter are glued together by Waller’s emotive phrasing and the band’s musical spark.

‘Mystery Drug’ feels like an evocative musical journey. It’s a linear progression through different times, places, landscapes, moods and feelings that leads to the closing ‘The River Knows’. The mesmerizing melody is part pedal steel and part acoustic rhythm as Waller adds a cowboy ‘ooooh’ refrain on the perfect finish to a rewarding album.

‘Mystery Drug’ isn’t so much an addiction as a quiet soothing pleasure that we should all regularly return to enjoy guilt free. **** (4/5)

Gig review: AUDREY HORNE, Camden Underworld, 2 May 2013

You often wonder why some bands are not bigger names than expected, when talking music with fellow fans.  Threshold and their modest following in their native UK are often one that crops up and I’d add Audrey Horne who played the gig of the year so far to a modest sized crowd.

They have released a seriously catchy album ‘Youngblood’ earlier this year, which owes more to bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC and Kiss than their previous two albums. All the more surprising given that some of the band members ply their trade in stoner rockers Sahg and extreme metal band Enslaved.

First we have two support bands and Sahg, whose guitarist Thomas Tofthagen would be on later as part of the headliners. They played a riff-tastic stoner rock meets classic metal set and although due to sound issues (a bugbear throughout the evening)  I was unable to really pick out the vocals at times. They were a very tight sounding unit and went down well with the crowd. A band I will definitely be delving into more musically.

Young up and coming UK band The Mercy House were up next and they too were beset by sound issues at times. Their vocalist has a mighty scream/high pitched vocal on him and his stage swagger and vocals reminded me of a youthful Axl Rose. The band’s sound has a distinct modern metal feel and the mighty bottom end of say Faith No More.

They had boundless energy, a mass of flailing hair and headbanging and the bassist played his bass so low it looked like it was ready for grass cutting duties! They tended to be a bit too loose sound wise at times, although they have something about them and with a few more shows under their belt they should start to make some serious headway.

Onto the main event Audrey Horne and starting with ‘Redemption Blues’ soon had the crowd going wild. The way they skilfully mix killer riffs, instant melodies and the vocals of Toschie they are onto a winner. Toschie is a real bundle of energy and throughout the set kept imploring those at the back on the raised level to join the majority of the crowd ‘in the pit’. He did finally get his way by the final two songs J

They played most of their impressive new album ‘Youngblood’ with a few older numbers like ‘Bridges And Anchors’. I must admit the older songs do sound heavier and have less of a commercial edge to them. Still damn find tunes though. The two guitarists solo with ease off each other and bassist Espen Lien adds a more fun element to their guitar heroics.

Sadly the headliners weren’t immune from the sound gremlins and Toschie had to tell a joke in the period whilst the techie guys did their stuff. He pulled off a Scottish accent very well indeed when telling his joke. When he’s not doing stand up Toschie can be found singing his heart out in the crowd. The whole band put their all into the show and it pays off as the crowd love them for it.

A song like ‘This Ends Hear’ has one of the best choruses I have heard in a long time and live the song was immense. Nicely introduced as a pirate tune or in their case a Viking song. The set closer was ‘Straight Into Your Grave’, a big hard rock beats of a tune and a good way to end the set. Hopefully they will be back again soon and with a bigger crowd as Audrey Horne are simply superb live and I really do hope they get the success they so richly deserve.

Album review: RUBEN HOEKE BAND – Loaded

Ruben Hoeke Band

Dimensions records [Release date: 23.03.13]

Dutch Guitarist Ruben Hoeke is firmly established as both a guitarist in his own right as well as a high profile interviewer, radio presenter and festival booker. His guitar chops are certainly evidence on ‘Loaded’, an album full of fiery guitar work in search of a decent song.

The best two moments are to be found on ‘Love And Emotion’ and ‘End of The Line’ both of which feature the aching Devon Allman style baritone of vocalist Frank van Pardo. ‘Love And Emotion’ also works well because it’s of the best arrangements on the album with strong vocals,  beefy guitar tones and a big slide figure, while the radio friendly ‘End of the Line’ is built round a strong melody.

For the rest of the CD, a clichéd lyrical landscape is populated by ‘Southern Comfort people’, ‘crazy momma’s’ and ‘bitches’, ‘fire burning in the brain’, or just plain lame couplets as on ‘Mississippi BBQ’: “No need to worry, I will explain; In my backyard we’ve got no rain; I feel so good, I feel like star; When Jesus picks me up in his electric car”.

And that’s a shame because in their best moments you can tell the Ruben Hoeke Band would give any self respecting rock band a good run for their money. ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ is a southern tinged rock ballad with chiming guitars and features great bv’s from Vicky van Zijl, while Ruben nails some fiery licks as the band thunder into AC/DC territory on ‘Give It Up, despite more lyrical short comings.

Given the Ruben Hoeke Band’s ability to rock, it is ironic that the closing slide led, smoldering blues of ‘Soul Of A Man’, doesn’t really deliver the big finale you might expect, though Frank van Pardo does sound far happier bringing meaning to his phrasing on this song than on much of what has gone before. *** (3/5)

Gig review: DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT – The Garage, Glasgow, 30 April 2013

Devin Townsend

There is a fine line between genius and madness and it is one that Devin Townsend has been balancing on precariously for many years. I recall seeing him for the first time fronting Vai when they supported Aerosmith on their British tour. To say the crowd were confused by Devin’s performance that night is an understatement. They were expecting radio friendly hits but instead got a bald Devin stalking the edge of the stage and singing like a man possessed whilst Steve Vai played up a storm. The hall emptied rapidly but I was enthralled by the performance.

In the intervening years Devin has become an unstoppable, one man record industry producing some of the most enjoyable and challenging metal you will find. Tonight’s gig was the first on his latest Euro jaunt and started well with an eclectic set by For The Imperium.  Touring in support of their excellent new album, ‘Hail The Monsters’, the Finnish rockers put in an energetic set full of blast beats, time changes and a lot of energy. I only managed to catch the last couple of numbers by the band but it was enough to demonstrate how good they are live and proved that they can reproduce their complex metal in a live setting.

As soon as For The Imperium finished their set a screen at the back of the stage burst into life and we were treated to 30 minutes of ‘ZTV’ hosted by Ziltoid and showing some strange and very funny videos accompanied by a pounding backbeat, never has a stage change been so entertaining! This led nicely to the main event of the evening and as Devin and crew took to the stage the cheers were deafening.

You don’t really buy a ticket to a Devin Townsend Project gig, it is more like getting an invitation into Devin’s world, a strange alternative universe inhabited by weird beings and where the music is loud, epic and intense.

The band opened with ‘More’ from their latest album, ‘Epicloud’, which then led into ‘Kingdom’, a huge soundscape of a track which is intense and mesmerising in equal measure. Devin was in fine form with a grin plastered across his face throughout the whole set.

His chat in between songs was rapid and very amusing. Being the first night of the tour and having new computer driven images projected on to the rear screen throughout, the set was not without the odd technical hitch. These hitches though provided Devin with the opportunity to spout forth, joking that Glasgow was added to the tour schedule so that the crew could sort out the technical issues before they played in London!

Once the IT crew got things back on track Ziltoid appeared back on screen for ‘ZTO/ By Your Command’. The set proved to be a good mix of new and old with an emphasis on the ‘Epicloud’ album. Other set highlights included a super heavy ‘War’, an upbeat ‘Supercrush’ and a face melting ‘Juular’, complete with the promo video playing on the screen behind the band for added effect. The main set was rounded off with ‘Grace’ which was epic in the extreme.

Devin then asked the crowd to pretend the band had done the traditional thing of leaving the stage and being called back on when in fact he had a quick drink and was straight back to the mic. He then announced that they were going to play two songs they hadn’t played live before, the first being ‘Divine’, which featured a great vocal performance by Devin, and ‘Angel’ where again the band shone. The night was rounded off on a high with a rocking version of ‘Bad Devil’ which had the crowd dancing along for all they were worth.

Once again the Devin Townsend Project had provided a top night’s entertainment with fantastic musicianship, first class metal and laughs aplenty.  There may have been the odd glitch but it all added to the performance and in Devin’s world the odd bizarre moment is never far away. I am hoping to book a return trip in the very near future!

Album review: STATUS QUO – Bula Quo

Status Quo - Bula Quo

Fourth Chord Records/Warners (2CD) [Release date 10.06.13]

Status Quo have gone silver screen in Kiss fashion with a film Bula Quo, shot in Fiji, with the band playing themselves. The film’s soundtrack (disc 1) features 9 new tracks and kicks off with “Looking Out For Caroline” which, in a middle of the road fashion, nods back to the Caroline of old.  “GoGoGo” is more uptempo boogie, very polished, but nods to the moodiness of IV era Toto. Not what you’d expect from Quo at all, but a decent guitar solo.

“Run And Hide (The Gun Song)” is a good hard rock number, but it is not Status Quo – there’s probably no more than half a dozen Quo chords in the entire song. “Running Inside My Head” is a little more Quo but still off the beaten track. Plenty of vocal harmonies and solid guitar work but not classic.

“Mystery Island” sees the band don their grass skirts and play something very Fijian. I don’t know who’s singing on this one, but this is the less like Quo than ever imaginable.

“All That Money” is another solid hard rock number that, again, is unrecognisable. “Never Leave A Friend Behind” likewise, some banging piano aside it is only barely recognisable. A nice melody and plenty of strumming. “Fiji Time” is another one to skip through – it has its party moments but there’s more Bad Manners in here. The title track closes, kicking off very Samoan, and it sees the band in sun soaked party mood. Hawaiian sunstroke ahoy.

A very mixed bag, some good rock tracks and some party nonsense. Barely three chords of Quo, never mind the fourth.

Disc two’s 10 tracks sees some reworkings and live takes on classics. Kicking off with Fiji styled Living On An Island, followed by Frozen Hero (a rocker and the best track so far). The Bula Edit of Rockin’ All Over The World is bluesy and interesting. Amongst the live tracks are Caroline and Down Down, which are as solid and classic as you can get.

I’m sure the band had fun doing this, the musicianship can’t be faulted, but the angle is questionable; a holiday project. Many of the tracks are more what you’d expect on a solo album or single b-side.  **1/2
