Album review: M.I.C. – 5th Avenue

Self release via Two Side Moon [Release date January 2013]

M.I.C. is the brainchild of Canadian vocalist, guitarist and song-writer Yvon Serre, who over the last 8 years has carved out an AOR niche in China and Japan.

During that period the band underwent several line-up changes, but the music has remained steadfast to the kind of riff driven, harmony laden Classic rock. It’s music that will always find a market somewhere, if not back home in their native Canada or North America.

In embracing the global potential of their derivative rock – think Lizzy and AC/DC licks, Tubes and Cheap Trick style harmonies –  M.I.C. have successfully tried to be all things to all people, both demographically and historically. The end result is ten mid -tempo tracks that at times veer too close to elevator music.

The melodic songs with booming hooks offer a wide appeal, though Yvon’s nasal vocal style restricts the arrangements to a familiar verse, chorus formula with strangely subdued guitar parts.

‘5th Avenue’ never really catches fire because of a circumspect production in which everything is mixed back. It’s as if the band is hedging its best. The result is a surfeit of mid-tempo songs that make the album sound claustrophobic, and no amount of whoops in the studio can generate any real excitement.

Listen for example to the guitar work on ‘What You Mean To Me’ on which the uplifting chorus is scuppered by some cotton wool sounding guitars, when the song demands an up in the mix solo.

The best moments come on the unison guitar sweep and strong hook of ‘Miracle Of Life’ and the riff driven pop-rock of ‘Sweet Christeen’. There are also some obvious triggers on the album like the catchy hook of ‘Serial Killers’ and the good time Quo style ‘Rockin’ Rollin’ It’, but most of the material is simply too generic with a familiar feel of recycled licks and telegraphed hooks.

Still, when you have made major inroads into the developing global rock market you can sense the appeal. *** (3/5)

Single reviews: THE TRADE, ORDINARYSON, VALENTIINE

Valentiine – Love Like

Valentiine – Vanessa (guitars / vocals), Erica (bass/vocals) and Shelly (drums/vocals) are a 3-piece all girl garage rock outfit from Melbourne, Australia.

Their debut UK single – Love Like- is reminiscent of the Shirley Manson / Garbage sound of the 1990’s – a dark moody groove, blistered overdosed vocals and a heavily laden hook.

Intentionally, or otherwise, the production is particularly lo-fi.  Some will see that as attitude and realism, others will view it as inexcusable in this day and age.  But I suspect the angst ridden teens Valentiine are aiming for simply won’t give a —-. ***

THE TRADE – Fight Club
CDS released March 18th 2013 www.the-trade.co.uk

A new single from this Dundee based band, although the album this is released off came out back in 2011. They have toured with some name artists including the Buzzcocks, the Undertones and a sold out gig in their native Dundee. This song is not too bad, standard guitar led rock number but nothing to make you sit up and take note, then have you wanting to track down their album.

ORDINARYSON – Sorted Out
CDS www.ordinaryson.co.uk

Founded around Ian S Thompson, the band has been around for some time and this current line-up has been around since 2007. A gentle little number, allowing Ian Thompson’s vocal to take the limelight and rightly so. Tried to think of a comparison but couldn’t really. It does leave the listener though wanting to hear more.

Album review: BLUE TO BROWN – Blue To Brown

Remedy-records [Release date 18.02.13]

Blue To Brown features the father and son duo of former Gets/z Loose vocalist and voice over artist Rob Brown and the multi instrumentalist and occasional vocals of Duran Duran guitarist and song writer Dom Brown.

Ostensibly a straight ahead blues album, the nine tracks mine a much deeper vein than the usual blues fare. ‘Blue To Brown’ feels like a coherent body of work rather than a bunch of songs stretched to fill out the extra space offered by a cd. It’s an engaging album that draws on Dom’s beautifully crafted solos and Rob’s considerable vocal presence.

Brown senior has a deep, earthy and expressive baritone that on the close to the mic phrasing of ‘Bad Boy’ veers towards to the darker, edgier style of Nick Cave. Dom’s thoughtful production gives several songs an extra colour, as on Anna Ross’s gospel tinged bv’s on ‘Bad Boy’, and Dom own introductory dobro part on ‘Bad Boy’.

The cross generational input also gives the material a distinctive light and shade. The repeated sax motif and funky guitar lines of ‘Going Down But Not Slow’ for example, neatly underpins the opening lyrical couplet of; ‘I’m too old to die young, I’m in the barrel of a gun’. A tale of mid-life crisis, Dom’s subtle use of different tones, and Darrin Mooney’s incisive percussion glues the whole thing together perfectly.

There’s also a subtle tension in the songs, born of Rob’s emotional intensity and Dom’s ability to mirror moods and feels in his solos.

The stripped down ‘Sweet Mercy’ – all handclaps, slide and effects – is a prime example of the darker side of Rob’s lyrics, while the equally narrative driven ‘Talking Blues’ is one part Rob’s low-down growl and one part Dom’s emotive solo. The emphasis on the album’s flow and coherent sequencing is highlighted by the light relief offered by the 50’s style melodic ballad ‘Please Please Please’, on which the vocal duet is underpinned by Dom’s lovely unison guitar lines.

Dom’s playing is inventive throughout and when his SRV influences bubble up to the surface on the muscular ‘I Get Loaded’ – alongside Rob’s caustic Beefheart phrasing – he switches from volume swells to a searing vibrato on a tension busting solo. His sweet tone on ‘The Heat Has Gone’ adds an extra dimension to the contrasting brusque/smooth duet between Rob and Kat Pearson. Martin Winning swaps his sax for a Hammond and Dom adds an eloquent opening solo that draws the listener into the song and all the way through to his eloquent wrap.

The slide/voice end-piece of ‘Love Another Day’ is as succinct as it is perfunctory. It puts the lid on nine conversations between voice and guitar that bring a refreshingly different take to narrative driven blues.**** (4/5)

Album Review: THE LIDOCAINE – On The Road To Miero

Inverse Records  (Release Date – Out now)

When your first thoughts on listening to a record are ‘sounds like Roger Chapman of Family fronting System Of A Down’ you know you are in for an interesting ride. This is the second album from Finnish rockers, The Lidocaine, their first being released back in 2009.

Unhinged metal is probably the best description I can give of what the band produce, could be a whole new sub-genre there. I would suspect that SOAD have had an influence but The Lidocaine offset their quirkiness with some solid riffs which underpin each track and hold things together as ably demonstrated on ‘Personally Sick Skin’ and the excellent ‘The Tail’ which is a cracker of a track.

Going back to the ‘Family’ reference made earlier, as well the vocal similarities there is also a prog edge to some of the tracks which adds to the mix. Over the course of the 11 tracks the band prove themselves to be good musicians and songwriters with many twists and turns packed into each track. There is a twelfth track on the album which goes uncredited and would appear to be called ‘I’m A Closet Gay’ which brings a bit of humour to round off the album.

The Lidocaine won’t be for everyone, but there are moments of greatness here. If you like a bit of a musical challenge then The Lidocaine may just provide the hit you’re after.

Album Review: SKADIKA – Frozen Legends

Self Release  (Release date – out now)

According to the accompanying blurb with this album, Skadika sound like they have been constantly changing and evolving since their inception back in 2005. The only constant across the 7 years has been frontwoman Jule who appears to be the driving force here.

This album was recorded on the back of three members leaving the band in 2012, but Jule has managed to gather together a fine group of musicians to provide her with a fitting symphonic metal backing. The band prove to be a tight, hard rocking unit with great guitar work from Base and Chris. Symphonic metal is indeed the band’s weapon of choice along with a strong pagan metal undercurrent, think Amon Amarth and you are in the right area.

Ironically the weakest spot of the band is the very cement that holds it together, namely Jule. She likens herself to Leann Rimes and Bonnie Tyler and is most definitely your usual Symphonic metal siren.

The music though tends to swamp her and at times she disappears behind a wall of heavy riffs and an ultra-heavy backline. At first I blamed the mix but I’m not so sure,I think the live experience would be much the same. Things work best on the tracks ‘The Hero Way’ and ‘Dark Circus’ with quieter passages which let Jule’s vocal seep through but musically these are probably two of the weaker tracks.

Musically then this album is well worth a listen as there are some great tracks here but overall the package doesn’t stack up. The blurb states that the band tried different styles before settling on symphonic metal, can’t help wondering if Jule wouldn’t be better suited in another softer and more laidback genre.

EP Review – HELLBOUND HEARTS – Outside

Self Release  (Release Date – 29/04/13)

This is the debut EP by Hellbound Hearts, a group formed in mid 2011 by ex Terrorvision bassist Danny Lambert. Danny has moved from bass to guitar and vocals. He has also brought in Andy Black on drums and Jase Brooks on bass to complete the trio.

After a few false starts the band have settled on a punked up rock sound with a Wildhearts like melodic  streak running through it. The first two tracks, ‘Outside’ and ‘Mr Cynical’, conform to the description perfectly and are good if uninspiring tracks. Things get more interesting though on the other two tracks, ‘Sinking Ships’ and ‘Hold Steady’, which are heavier, driving tracks that I think suit the band well and would go down a storm live.

This is a good debut that shows a lot of promise, especially in the latter half of the disc. The band will be touring through April to promote the EP and could well be worth catching live.

Album review: MIKE TRAMP – Cobblestone Street

Mike Tramp - Cobblestone Street

Target Records [Release date 08.04.13]

First up, if you are expecting something along the lines of White Lion, the harder rocking Freak Of Nature or something lighter in the melodic rock field be warned as this is an album Mike Tramp has wanted to make for many years. That said if you are a fan of his vocals like me and love folk/acoustic music and storytelling in songs you will LOVE this album.

The songs have sparse musical arrangements, although little additions here and there really add to the song’s atmosphere. Take ‘Once’ where Mike’s vocal is set to a crackly background bringing to mind an old movie and you can hear the reel of the imaginary film spooling out at the song’s end. The harmonica and acoustic strumming on ‘Ain’t The Life I Asked For’ recall the Alarm’s Mike Peters. Hey now there is a dream tour, the two Mikes :)

The title track sets the scene nicely being about his childhood and where he grew up. His knack of penning a potential chart topper show through on the pop rock of ‘New Day’. Throughout the album Soren Andersen adds in just the right musical backing, be it the subdued keys on the title track or the electric guitar solo on ‘Revolution’.

The nearest he gets to one of his previous bands is on ‘We’ll Be Alright’, which could be an acoustic White Lion number.

I rarely award five stars but this album deserves full marks, not a duff moment from start to finish. He may have taken thirty years to reach this point and make this album, but it has been worth the wait.

Quick plays: GENERATIONALS, LUKE GIRVAN, DINNERSTEIN & MERRITT, BRETT WALKER, VAMP

GENERATIONALS – Heza
Polyvinyl Records (Released April 8th)

A two-piece band consisting of Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer and they are assisted on percussion by the producer Daniel Black. I am not sure what they used to sound like as the press release says they have had ‘a subtle but significant sonic shift’. They traverse many musical areas from the US indie rock feel of opener ‘Spinoza’ and then there is a world music feel to the catchy ‘Say When’.

‘I Never Know’ mixes the guitar sound of Chris Rea with an indie rock beat, whilst ‘You Got Me’ cleverly adds in electronica and sampling, an album highlight for me.
Their wide range of music may mean they don’t play in arenas anytime soon but then that’s not what this band are about.

LUKE GIRVAN – Take Me To The Doctor
www.lukegirvan.com

A young and fresh faced singer and songwriter who cites a fair few rock acts as his influence and there is some rock on this album, albeit more of the kind your mum would like!

Highlight would be ‘I Just Need One Shot’, a highly addictive chorus on this one and like the rest of the album horns are used to good effect to round out the songs. In fact the whole album reminds me of the mini-big band feel Colin James does so well, although he is more blues based whilst Luke has his eye firmly on a pop song.

Hint of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on ‘Where You Are’ and ‘Enough Is Enough’, whilst ‘Break My Heart Again’ has a reggae lilt to the sound. Surprisingly there is only one ballad, ‘This Time Around’ which Luke just about pulls off as his slightly nasal vocal is better suited to the uptempo numbers.

It is not a bad little album (it only lasts just under forty minutes) and given a little exposure on Radio 2 and the like he could get some deserved success.

SIMONE DINNERSTEIN & TIFT MERRITT – Night

Sony Classical (Released 18th March)

This is a collaboration between pianist Simone Dinnerstein and singer/songwriter Tift Merritt and they explore many musical areas during the course of the album. Merritt’s vocals are very gentle and almost lullaby like to the listener, with their version of ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ a real tour de force. Another good cover is the Billie Holiday song ‘Don’t Explain’, although it is not all covers as Merritt pens four songs on the album. Dinnerstein shows her undoubted talent as a leading classical pianist on not only the aforementioned songs but a few classical pieces including Bach’s ‘Prelude In B Minor’.

The musicianship you can not fault, nor the performances however it may not be to everyone’s liking and the real market will be the classical audience.

DEAN ALLEN FOYD – Road To Atlas (EP)

Crusher Records (released on 10″ red vinyl)

Dean Allen Foyd hail from Sweden and have already released their debut album last year. They play psychedelic rock and they take the music to the extreme. ‘Sadness Of Mankind’ is a groovy rocker and the best on the EP by far. The other four songs tend to see the band indulge in over extended psychedelic wig outs, a song like ‘Insects’ is most probably great if you’re under the influence.

Maybe for some but good, long lasting psychedelic rock needs some melodies and sadly bar the opening song Dean Allen Foyd don’t really hit the mark…

BRETT WALKER – Nevertheless

Divebomb Records

Originally released in 1994, and on a small Swedish independent label, Brett Walker’s “Nevertheless” album has been re-mastered, re-packaged and reborn. Of late I have come to realise that if you liked this sort of album back in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, odds are you are still going to like it now in 2013 – as music fans above a certain age tend to stay loyal to bands and albums.

“Nevertheless” features co-writing credits from the likes of Jonathan Cain (Journey), Jim Peterik (Survivor) and Stan Bush and will appeal to fans of bands such as Def Leppard, Journey, Bryan Adams and Richard Marx- it is big, solid and dependable polished melodic rock.  Rockier tracks like album opener “Hard To Find An Easy Way”, “Lecia”, “More Than A Memory” and bonus track “Midnight Angel”, the latter a 2012 remix, sit nicely alongside tracks like the acoustic “Never Gave Roses”, “Bad Time For A Goodbye” , “No Fire Without You” and the excellent “Take Me Home” and “Bring Back The Night”.

The album packaging also contains a brand new interview with Walker and photos from the original recording sessions.

VAMP – The Rich Don’t Rock

(2 CD Deluxe Edition) (Divebomb Records)

German band Vamp released their debut album “The Rich Don’t Rock” on Atlantic records in 1989, and what is worth bearing in mind is that at the time, major labels signed as many talented long haired bands as they could in the hope that they would all return the same kind of financial rewards as the likes of Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and the biggest rock band at the time, Guns N Roses. Many of the bands they signed weren’t the massive commercial success that the labels craved and as a result very few of them went on to release a second major label release.

Vamp were one such band, however “The Rich Don’t Rock” has now been re-mastered and re-packaged to include the original album, three 12” remixes and a second disc containing seven demos for the album (four of which were never included on the actual album) and eight more for what would have been the band’s sophomore release.

“The Rich Don’t Rock” opens with “Heartbreak, Heartache”- a track that, along with “Why” is reminiscent of the late ‘80’s output of W.A.S.P, there are touches of Europe to “Lonely Nights” and “Stand By Me”, AC/DC to “Talk Is Cheap” and Poison have clearly influenced “Like I Want”. Whilst all these tracks are good you get the feeling that the label had a hand in choice of producer Tony Platt (AC/DC, Foreigner) and the overall feel of the final mixes as the demos on the second disc have a better energy and feel to them that would have given the album a more original feel. Other highlights are “Shout”, “Renegade” and “All Nite”, bonus tracks are the 12” EP remixes of “Why”, “Shout” and “The Rich Don’t Rock”.

So to disc two where the eight “One Smack Killer” demos find the band sounding bigger and more confident and signs are that the second album would probably have fared better than its processor had Atlantic taken that chance, just listen to “Dead In The Backseat”, “Junkyard D.O.G”, “The Big Mess” and ballad “I Don’t Know”. The “Rich Don’t Rock” demos have a feel that I have already mentioned and it’s good to see the songs that never made the final studio sessions see the light of day.

New interviews with all the band members, plus archive photos complete this worthwhile deluxe package.

Quick Plays: JOSH ROUSE, JOHN SMITH, THE LEISURE SOCIETY, JACKIE OATES

JACKIE OATES Lullabies

Jackie Oates is a traditional folk singer songwriter who’s won countless awards since emerging on the scene in 2003.  She’s also toured with Seth Lakeman and is a member of the folk ‘super group’ Imagined Village alongside Eliza Carthy, Chris Wood, Martin Carthy and other luminaries of the genre.

For her 5th studio album she’s decided to explore the very niche avenue (some may call it a cul de sac) of children’s lullabies, sleep songs and associated material designed to relax and sooth.  But that’s a broader palette than you might imagine covering everything from a 12th century Wexford carol to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and from McCartney’s Junk (written in 1968, but appearing on his first post Beatles release) to AA Milne (Alexander Beetle).

A sparsely instrumented and mostly acoustic set, it’s exquisitely delivered and recorded.  Whether you’d manage to fully absorb all 15 tracks without drifting into the land of nod is open to debate.  What isn’t, is that Lullabies is a dreamy collection that will surely cement Jackie Oates position as a leading light in the growing folk scene.  ***1/2

JOSH ROUSE  The Happiness Waltz

A singer / songwriter who combines folk and pop, Josh Rouse is probably a name that, in this country, few beyond our buzzing metropolitan capital will know.  But he’s had nine previous album releases so is by no means a new kid on the block.

That said, with a huge interest in the male singer/ songwriter genre, the timing could just be right for his latest release.  Canadian by birth, brought up in the American mid-west and now resident in Spain, on The Happiness Waltz, Rouse manages to capture the ambiance of the 1970s (Paul Simon, and CS&N in particular) and successfully marry it to the laid back pop sensibilities of Jack Johnson.

The result is a rather enjoyable road trip that brings a joyful feeling of sunny days and summer breezes.  One for top down days.  ***

JOHN SMITH Great Lakes

Not the no stranger to a fish supper ‘two Jags’ politician, or any relation to a Tetley’s Cream Flow, this John Smith is a West Country singer songwriter who supported Richard Hawley on his December 2012 tour, and who is often found as the guitarist in Lisa Hannigan’s band.

Listening to Great Lakes – his 3rd studio album, the Lisa Hannigan connection makes perfect sense, there’s the same gentle and thoughtful approach.  Restrained finger picking and warm smoky vocals are the order of the day.  Hard to believe he honed his skills unpicking the likes of Zeppelin’s Kashmir.

The male acoustic guitar wielding genre Is in vogue like no time since the sixties at present, but John Smith bears greater comparison with the more ‘thoughtful’ artists of the genre – like, Ray La Montagne, than he does with the likes of Ed Sheeran.  Intricate and soulful.  ***

THE LEISURE SOCIETY Alone Aboard The Ark

Recorded at Ray Davies’ Konk Studios, double Ivor Novello nominees The Leisure Society have been dubbed Britain’s answer to the likes of Fleet Foxes.

For those unfamiliar with band’s previous two home studio recorded albums – The Sleeper (2009) and Into The Murky Water (2011) they deliver an intelligent blend of indie folk / pop / rock.  Alone Aboard The Ark see the band expand their Arcadian, Baroque pop sound with an ambitious array of sounds and inventive orchestration.

Recorded on 2 inch tape and a 1970s mixing desk, Alone Aboard The Ark is both eclectic and ebullient, and a natural progression.  Dedicated followers will be more than impressed.  ***

Album review: ANNIE KEATING – For Keeps

Annie Keating - For Keeps

While Bob Harris listeners may be acquainted with the name, New York based Americana singer songwriter Annie Keating will be unfamiliar to most.  But her self-released fifth album, For Keeps, should go some way to redressing that balance.

For the most part, the album sits firmly in Shelby Lynne / Shawn Colvin territory and more than holds its own in that regard.  But it’s when Keating takes an unexpected side road that things really get interesting and ‘For Keeps’ really shows its spurs.

The opener, ‘Storm Warning’, a southern swamp boogie that ZZ Top would be proud of, featuring Tony Joe White style guitar/harmonica that underpin Keating’s earthy vocals is a marvellous highlight.  ‘Let It Come’ somehow manages to combine elements of Madonna’s Vogue and Isacc Hayes’ Shaft, while the album closer is a heart melting cover of Neil Young’s ‘Cowgirl In the Sand ‘.

Beautifully crafted songs with sultry vocals abound and it looks like Annie Keating’s reputation could be on the rise. ***1/2

Album review: FRANKA DE MILLE – Bridge The Roads

Franka De Mille - Bridge The Roads

London based singer songwriter Franka De Mille has the distinction of being the only independent artist to be selected for the British Phonographic Industry’s Why Music Matters campaign alongside icons such as Nina Simone, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Louie Armstrong and the like.

Her classy debut Bridge The Roads – in which she exudes the same effortless cool as say, Rumour, explains why.  There’s a similar easy listening pleasure exhibited, in De Mille’s case inhabiting Vaya Con Dios territory – an stylish blend of Americana, jazz, classics, folk and blues delivered by a largely acoustic line up that relies heavily on restrained, but intelligent use of guitar, piano, violin and cello playing.

It’s a fairly unique blend, and topped by De Mille’s powerful vocals is one the with a little exposure (a spot on the next Jools Holland series must be inevitable) will surely see her reach iconic status.  Just sit back and listen to the epic centrepiece – Gare Du Nord – and tell me you’re not moved.  A future Brits nominee, for sure.  ****

Album review: W.E.T.- Rise Up

W.E.T.- Rise Up

Frontiers Records [Release date 22.02.13]

In a genre whose natural tendency is to look backwards, few new melodic rock acts have been as eagerly anticipated as W.E.T. Their 2009 debut, fusing the talents of prolific and versatile ex Malmsteen, Talisman and Journey singer Jeff Scott Soto with rising Swedish songwriters Robert Sall from Work of Art and Eclipse’s Eric Martensson, was an instant classic, and their stock has risen even further since.

A 2011 Firefest appearance was jaw-droppingly good, and Work of Art’s second album outstanding while Martensson has established himself as melodic rock’s go-to songwriter for the new generation. So  it is fair to say that expectations were high for this sophomore release.

This is an album that goes against the stereotype of a band establishing themselves with their debut,  then taking chances and broadening their approach on the follow-up (with mixed results, hence the difficult second album syndrome). In this instance, W.E.T. – now a full band with Eclipse’s Magnus Henriksson and Robban Bäck in tow – have unashamedly gone for the most mainstream, commercial sound possible, complete with ‘who-oah’ choruses and layered backing vocals, notably on The Moment and Bad Boy,  possibly delighting those Soto fans frustrated by his relentless genre hopping.

The results are stunning, openers Walk Away (with a nod to Journey’s never Walk Away) and Learn to Live Again, on which Martensson shares vocals,  having massive hooks and choruses whose updated production values are the only clue we have not stumbled across an undiscovered  gem from the late eighties. The title track is as stirring as its title suggests and Love Heals is a lush ballad with a slight hint of Def Leppard’s Love Bites: one of only two on the album alongside Still Believe in Us, which with its piano intro and crashing chords as the chorus kicks in ticks all the power ballad boxes.

After a slight dip in quality for a couple of songs the last third is uniformly excellent. Broken Wings has a Celtic feel reminding me of Dare’s The Raindance , Shot fuses big hooks  with the modern feel of a Shinedown or Halestrom and closer Still Unbroken combined another anthemic chorus with one of the best guitar solos on the album. JSS’s vocals are strong throughout and fit the material perfectly.

And yet, and yet- given that the first album had its ambitious, grandiose moments  I cannot help feel that they have sold themselves short by less adventurously going for the lowest common denominator.

This stuff would have filled stadia in the eighties, but as it is us melodic rock lovers can look forward to appearances on either side of the pond at Melodicrock Fest 3 and Firefest.  If you are not worried about the lack of chances taken , this is a stunningly crafted template for what a melodic hard rock album can sound like for the modern age.

Gig review: Uriah Heep, Islington Assembly Hall, 27 February 2013

Uriah Heep, 21 February 2013

Nearly 45 years into their career, Uriah Heep are seemingly indestructible, still treading the boards with an enthusiasm that puts younger bands to shame.

Sadly bassist Trevor Bolder was absent recovering from a major operation (which oddly went unmentioned from the stage), but the shaven headed  John Jowit made an admirable stand-in for what is one of the more difficult assignments with the bass very prominent in Heep’s material. However I noticed how Trevor’s absence, on top of Lee Kerslake’s departure a few years back, has reduced the impact of the harmony vocals that used to be a big part of the Heep sound, for all Phil Lanzon’s efforts to plug the gap.

Their previous tour 15 months ago had heavily promoted the last album ‘Into the Wild’: three numbers (the title track, I’m Ready, and the rather tedious Nail On The Head) still feature mid-set, but no longer needing to plug it so heavily, the first half of the set was an interesting choice of songs.

In particular, the earlier Bernie Shaw-era albums were dipped into, with Against the Odds a surprise opener, followed by Overload from their penultimate album Wake the Sleeper, with Mick Box letting rip and a spectacular Hammond organ solo from Phil  as it built to a climax.

Uriah Heep, 21 February 2013

A pair of the less well known cuts from ‘Demons and Wizards’ were also played in Traveller in Time and All My Life, the latter one of the few Heep songs closer in spirit to Zeppelin than Purple, either side of Sunrise where the crowd reaction caused a big smile to come over Bernie’s face.

He may be one of my less  favourite of Heep’s singers, but after nearly 30 years in the band he is a fixture and his enthusiasm does much to make the gig feel so enjoyable  and renders  his quirkiness endearing rather than irritating. After another return to the nineties in Between Two Worlds, with a great solo from Mick, he led the crowd participation to the evergreen Stealin’.

Great though it was to see them cover more recent times, the ageing- but healthily sized audience-  had of course come primarily for the old classics and were delighted by the seminal Gypsy, Phil playing the original keyboard intro, which segued straight into Look at Yourself which rattled on at a fair pace  until Mick stretched out on a solo slot.

July Morning’s epic 10 minutes flew by, before Mick strapped on his acoustic and told the story of Lady in Black as Bernie led the crowd piped piper like in a singalong.

For the first encore, before cranking out one of his heaviest riffs in Free and Easy, Mick reprised the tradition started on the last tour of inviting on stage the women in the audience (who were considerably outnumbered!) and the band’s families, and a frantic Easy Living inevitably brought an hour and 40 minute show to an end.

Aside from the enduring quality of the material from one of the pioneers of heavy rock, the most striking feature of this gig was the way the band, like their Dickensian namesakes, remain ever ‘Umble, with Bernie and Mick in particular, taking childlike joy in playing to an appreciative audience. In the words of Mick’s catchphrase, it’s ‘Appy Days’ in the Heep camp.

Album review: SNAKEROOT – Downtown To Ghetto

http://www.facebook.com/snakeroottheband

Formed back in 2008 in Istanbul Snakeroot have released this, their debut album digitally and after playing this one for a few times I am surprised a label hasn’t picked them up. They quote lots of musical influences, although overall they have a melodic hard rock sound that has wide appeal, none more so than ‘Generation Lost’ which has an insanely catchy chorus and a nice guitar solo. Like Motley Crue and Poison teamed up with Cheap Trick! ‘Another Day Without End’ mixes 80′s hard rock with a little rap, not unlike say Crown Of Thorns.

After the insipid corporate cack rock Bon Jovi have served up lately Snakeroot show them how to pen a decent ballad on ‘Sleepless Nights’. ‘Roses Whisper Your Name’ is another Bon Jovi meets Alice Cooper circa ‘Poison’. This band have a great knack of penning memorable choruses and there are plenty of tasty guitar solos throughout the album.

Check them out via their Facebook page or on Reverbnation if you fancy some well played and enjoyable melodic hard rock that successfully captures the classic 80′s sound and adds in a modern touch.

Album review: MIGHTY MOJOS – Hook Line And Sinker

Mighty Mojos self release [Release date 21.01.13]

The Mighty Mojos certainly live up to their name. The band’s old school approach to high octane rhythm and blues (aka r&b) is a welcome breath of fresh air in a musical landscape dominated by the formulaic and the mundane.

Of course you could argue that an r&b album with an apparent mission to emulate the style and class of say Nine Below Zero is hardly breaking the mould.  But The Mighty Mojos offer the complete package of well rafted songs, played with vim and vigour and nailed by a snappy production.

Guitarist and producer David McClean contributes 6 songs and a co-write and it’s a testament to his abilities that his writing effortlessly stands up alongside 3 standards and a Keb Mo cover. Mighty Mojos manage to fuse an abrasive playing style with strong generic material. The 11 eleven tracks are all fired up by the excellent rhythm section of Ali Mckenzie on bass and drummer David Kennedy, who know when to stick or twist – or rather, when to shuffle, swing or rock out.

David adds some imperious slide figures and Alan Ward adds several bursts of tasty harp to compliment a lived in growl. He evokes Los Lobos vocalist David Hidalgo on ‘I Want It All’ and sounds like Canned Heat’s Bob Hite on ‘Cindylou’, as if to suggest that if you are going to borrow, you might as well borrow from the best.

David Mclean slides all over the place to great effect on the title track and he adds a cutting edge to a sparkling cover of ‘Come On In My Kitchen’.  The self penned ‘Devil In Disguise’ is another highlight and features a crisp rhythm track, a caustic vocal growl, and an uplifting slide break, while ‘Back To You’ suggests the band are as adept on a pedal steel led American piece, as they are on hard driving r&b.

A brace of live tracks – including the ripping intensity of ‘Don’t You Lie To Me’- also gives us a flavour of how the Mighty Mojos must regularly light up their native Ballymena music scene.

If this cd had been recorded by an American band, it would be suitably marketed as a heritage blues album. As it is, the Mighty Mojos’ thoughtfully conceived, but hi-energy brand of r&b should win them plenty of new converts in the pubs, clubs and festivals of the land.  ‘Hook Line And Sinker’ is a glorious retro snapshot of the true meaning of r&b. **** (4/5)  www.mightymojos.com

Gig review: THRESHOLD + ENOCHIAN THEORY + CRYPTEX

Camden Underworld Friday March 1st 2013

Threshold were kicking off their latest tour on home soil, although sadly their only UK day bar the upcoming prog festival Celebr8.2 in May in Kingston. A brave promoter needs to back them as I am sure they’d do well in the metal heartlands of the midlands, the north east and Glasgow.

First up we had Cryptex, who were playing in acoustic mode and had an impressive merchandise stall that would put some arena sized bands to shame. Sadly though the music was shall we say niche as the vocalist/keyboards player was very enthusiastic but vocally he was okay and the songs were nothing special even despite throwing in a newly composed song, an ode to Camden town. Maybe for some but not for me I am afraid.

Enochian Theory played a varied set, although my one gripe was the over reliance on backing tapes. It was a pity they couldn’t take on a keyboard player for the live dates. That said you can’t fault the three pieces musical abilities and they played some corkers of their recent album ‘Life…And All It Entails’, including set opener ‘This Aching Isolation’ and ‘Hz’. Ben Harris Hayes has a vocal that suits the mellower moments and he can certainly rock it out on the band’s more metal musical passages. An entertaining set and a band that I am sure will be become more widely known in prog rock circles over the coming year given the amount of live dates they have planned.

By the time Threshold took to the stage the Underworld was rammed and the biggest crowd I have seen at the Underworld for the band. Kicking off with ‘Mission Profile’ certainly put a smile on my face as it is one of my personal favourites. Damian Wilson, sporting a thick bushy beard, gives the band that extra dimension as he is a natural frontman as well as a quite phenomenal singer. He is equally at home on the heavier songs like ‘Don’t Look Down’ or on the epic ‘Pilot In The Sky Of Dream’s and an awesome version of ‘Angels’. Listening to this trio of songs it confirms all that I love about this band, the riffs, passionate vocals and classy musicianship that few other progressive metal bands can match.

The sound at times made it hard to pick out the keyboards of Richard West and poor old Pete Morten had a torrid time with his guitars, although he took it in his stride and Damian Wilson gave some onstage encouragement. Pete Morten’s playing compliments perfectly that of Karl Groom, often seen as ‘Mr. Threshold’ and certainly referred to as the boss by Damian Wilson during his onstage introductions.

An encore and audience sing-a-long of ‘Slipstream’ rounded off one of the best gigs I have seen by this band and by my reckoning this was the fifth time I have seen them! A great start to their tour and if you missed them this time get yourselves along to the excellent Celebr8.2 prog festival in May to see them headline.

EP review: FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS – Exposition: The Five Before The Flames

Goremount Records (Released 11th March 2013)

Exposition: The Five Before The Flames. Five songs written by each individual band member, giving a better insight to their personal characteristics within the dystopian world of Grandomina – a prequel to their debut album ‘Militia Of The Lost’. The tracklist is as follows;
The Pilot: P-train
The Thief: Merchants of Decay
The Mechanist: Handlung (Stargazer)
The Vigilante: Death or Disgrace
The Prince: Diamond Dust and Crimson Reign

Exposition gives quite a different feel than the usual FVK material. Each track has its own atmosphere and sound; a time capsule in which a particular band member has mixed his personal music taste with a streak of creativity and wild ambition into a piece that reflects them and their unique abilities as an individual.

P-Train is opens the EP, a heavy guitar number cleverly combined with acoustic elements, quite different from Merchants of Decay; a slightly slower song, with a more laid-back attitude. Only two tracks in and already, ‘Exposition’ is looking very promising. Next is Handlung which has a pop-like twist to it with a crashing drum beat blended with harmonic vocals. It’s a good halfway mark, and gives a positive momentum towards the next tracks. Death or Disgrace gives a more macabre atmosphere to Exposition, containing a more traditional FVK approach with a killer chorus (if you’ll pardon the pun…) and a fast beat that’s sure to get your foot tapping. To round it all off is Diamond Dust and Crimson Reign which is the icing on the cake – a song packed with great vocal and music contrast, feeling, and a good beat which draws the curtains on Exposition very nicely.

As I mentioned earlier, each track was written by a different member of Fearless Vampire Killers; so here’s my guess:
Drew Woolnough (bass) wrote – The Pilot: P-Train
Luke Illingworth (drums) wrote – The Thief: Merchants of Decay
Shane/Cyrus Barrone (guitar) wrote – The Mechanist: Handlung (Stargazer)
Kier Kemp (vocals/guitar) wrote – The Vigilante: Death or Disgrace
Laurence Beveridge (vocals/guitar) wrote – The Prince: Diamond Dust and Crimson Reign

To summarise, Exposition: The Five before the Flames is a collage of various sounds and enthusiasm. Each track offers a great melody, catchy riffs and an example of FVKs immense hard work. What can I say? They’ve pulled it off again!

Album review: JIMI HENDRIX – People, Hell & Angels

Jimi Hendrix - People,Hell & Angels

Experience Hendrix/Sony [Release date 04.03.13]

Can there be any more Hendrix wine to tease from an ageing vine?  It seems that with each new distribution deal (now with Sony Legacy) the opportunity is used to recycle and repackage material for a new generation.  Whilst there is intrinsically nothing wrong with this it does beg the question why definitive versions of certain tracks are not uncovered sooner and released?

Why for example have we never had the longer version of ‘Easy Blues’ which appeared truncated on the long-deleted ‘Message To The Universe’.  Collectors of course will have the ‘proper’ version on a bootleg.  It does beg the question, though, about this constant reinvention.

Either it’s fed by capitalist zeal or just incompetence: that the definitive versions couldn’t have been sourced at the outset.  Arguably it is those very versions that will appeal to the Hendrix die-hards.  There is evidently some cherry-picking going on and it is clear that the ‘best’ versions are not always chosen by the Hendrix triumvirate of Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott (see my earlier review, link below).

This release is best considered a lower-key companion to the 2010 ‘Valleys Of the Neptune’ which in launching the new ‘deal’ cleverly mixed live Hendrix footage to make a new video for the track ‘Bleeding Heart’.  That has now garnered over 800,000 views, evidence enough of the cross-generational marketing push.

In summation, ‘People, Hell & Angels’ is a collection of songs that in some shape or form have mostly been available previously although all these versions are previously unreleased.  As Hendrix was a master of the umpteenth take, only die-hards will be able to decipher the subtle nuances.

Therefore mere mortals may be quite happy with previous versions of tracks like ‘Earth Blues’, ‘Bleeding Heart’ and ‘Isabella’ (all here in more measured form) and the well-worn ‘Hear My Train A Coming’ (a definitive version appearing on the ‘Jimi Plays Berkeley’ album, albeit live).

‘Let Me Love You’ is a rare gem in the sense that it evokes Hendrix when on the chitlin’ circuit before his late-sixties rise to fame.  A straightforward soul revue blow-out with saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood recorded in 1969 whilst ‘Mojo Man’ features The Ghetto Fighters with whom Hendrix worked on later studio sessions.

‘Crash Landing’ first appeared on that fated 1975 release where producer Alan Douglas substituted a modern rhythm section, whilst not the strongest of Hendrix’s songs at least this 1969 version hasn’t been doctored.  ‘Inside Out’ is really insight to a song creation process, essentially an early workout for the song ‘Ezy Ryder’ so it’s very much work in progress.  Ditto ‘Hey Gypsy Baby which is one of Hendrix’s more attractive melodies.  And again, ‘Villanova Junction Blues’ which he featured at Woodstock is here in early form but very much a historical fragment.

With this release, die-hards will no doubt ponder on what could still be released from the archive that might be justified as truly ‘new’.   My guess is that the vine is now starting to wither and this constant reinvention and repackaging is something we’re all going to have to live with.  Those intrigued newcomers are still best directed to the ‘purple’ box set (2000) which includes most of the songs on this release albeit in marginally different form. ***

Album review: TRIGGERFINGER – All This Dancin’ Around

Dramatico Records [Release date 15.04.13] www.triggerfinger.net/

What’s in a name? Triggerfinger is a condition related to the forefinger, but transferred to a musical context, the concept might explain the Flemish combo’s jerky and restless style. They think nothing of sudden shifts from power riff-driven, pulsating rock to Grunge, Garage Punk with hints of psychedelia, all anchored by a bluesy undertow.

“All This Dancin’ Around” is an enjoyable bundle of contradictions.  The Belgium bad is influenced by stoner rock, think Queens of the Stone Age meets grunge era Neil Young.  They momentarily explore fleeting Brit influences such as Muse and even Radiohead, and the unrelenting riffs and spirally bass lines generate the same sort of  power and energy to be found in latter career Rush – albeit bluster in search of a decent song.

Triggerfinger are clearly the sum of their unique parts, ranging from the startling vocals of Rubem Block, who thinks nothing of using his voice as an extra layered instrument, to the virtuosic bass playing of Paul Van Bruystegem. Mario Goossens’ percussive versatility nicely shapes everything, from the portentous press rolls on ‘Feed Me’ to the thundering propulsive rhythms of the up tempo ‘Tuxedo’.

“All This Dancin’ Around” is an exhilarating ride, full of big production values, tensions busting solos, dramatic vocal swoops and an adventurous music spirit that won’t be sated until every stylistic potential has been explored.

So while the album opens with a ripping brace of stadium rockers and moves into the sharply contrasting heavy grunge and starling falsetto of ‘I’m Coming For You’, the big tremolo guitar motif and close to the mic vocal of ‘Love Lost in Love’ suggests there’s more to their material than mere bombast.

Indeed by the time of the vocal piece of ‘All Night Long’  - a post Radiohead bluesy take on the old Ray Charles song – Triggerfinger explore the kind of  eclectic arrangement and unfettered vocal style that will largely determine whether you like them or not.

The 8 minute opus ‘My Baby’s Got A Gun’ further wracks up the tension, before exploding into a grungy drone. It’s got the kind of troubled poetic lyrics that Jim Morrison might have brought to life, but here it’s in danger of merely testing your patience.

And while the band further explore a heavier Muse style drone on ‘Cherry’ – all rumbling bass and angst filled vocals – they retain their ability to surprise with the dreamy ‘Without A Sound’. The song evokes New Order and the deliberately plucked bass line would surely make Peter Hook smile.

They save their best for last on ‘It Hasn’t Gone Away’, as a grungy Neil Young arrangement collides with a Lennon vocal, in a triumph of a psychedelic swirl over meaning.

It is no real surprise to learn that the band’s commercial breakthrough came with a cover of Lykke Li’sI Follow Rivers’. The relaxed, whistled melody swaps minimalism for bombast and breathes enough to effectively showcase Block’s yearning vocals. The same can be said of the bonus acoustic version of ‘Love Lost In Love’, proof if needed that the band are just as good without a wall of sound.

At times Triggerfinger flatter to deceive. They press the right buttons, mine a few familiar riffs and Ruben’s vocal swoops successfully unlocks different moods and feels as the band reaches for something epic. You sense their ambitions are limitless, but what’s missing is a memorable song.  **** (4/5)

Gig review: VIRGIL & THE ACCELERATORS – RNCM,Manchester,23 February 2013

Virgil & The Accelerators - Manchester, 23 February 2013

RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music) was rather a strange venue for what could potentially be a lively gig.

While the sound was excellent and the lighting was perfectly acceptable the layout was for a theatre and an all seated gig.  Indeed Bernie Shaw (Uriah Heep vocalist) made reference to “who booked us into a seated gig?”

Tonight we had the pleasure of watching Virgil and the Accelerators, an amazing blues rock trio formed in 2009. Fronted on guitar by Virgil McMahon who even at his young age manages to combine the flamboyance and touch of the likes of Hendrix with the feel of SRV and Bonamassa to produce a sound that is definitely The Accelerators.

Virgil & The Accelerators - Manchester, 23 February 2013

Gabriel McMahon takes care of skins who along with Jack Timmis on bass provide the steady guts and power that completes the hard hitting Riff laden blues rock that the band is getting known for.  They have been out there touring for the past years playing material from the debut album Radium and a few select covers from Hendrix.  After the release of the DVD from last years appearance at Marshall Amplification in Milton Keynes they are beginning three support tours.

Virgil & The Accelerators - Manchester, 23 February 2013

Kicking off with Uriah Heep then onto Michael Schenker and Johnny Winter. This will get them great exposure but as they are only support you only get a short set giving a small insight into what the band are capable off and leaving you wanting more.  Checkout their website for more dates.

Tonight’s set kicked off with Working Man a powerful track showing the tightness of this trio at its best, this was followed by Refuse to Believe, Bad Girl and Backstabber and finishing off with a classic Hendrix cover Are you Experienced.  A great set but more needed.

Album review: MIND THE GAEP – Get Ready For Tonight

Leo Skull  [Release date 23.03.13]

Mind The Gaep is a powerful hard rock band with metal pretension, but it’s their softer underbelly that more accurately reflects their true calling. Scratch below the stunt guitar parts and brusque vocals and you’ll find a band that is a progress in work.

Mind The Gaep wear their hearts on their sleeves, from their uncompromising mission statement; ‘Beers up, Balls Out, Rock ‘n’ Roll – Motherfucker!’ to vocalist Matt Diener’s Axl rose machinations, Stephan Ebert’s moments of intense shredding  and Vjeran Wertag’s unremitting rumbling bass.

This is a band with a strong musical foundation whose front line players and vocalist have all been nominated for their respective categories at the German Rock & Pop Awards 2012

But while they do enjoy a few intense frenzied moments, too much of the material flatters to deceive. The opening title track is topped and tailed by an impressive scream from Matt Diener, either side of some impressive shredding by guitarist Ebert.

The band also rock with venom on ‘Reckless Driver’ before a clumsy tempo change that is never fully resolved. ‘Sister Sister’ mines a few AC/DC riffs , but the band don’t seem to know whether to stick or twist – to rock or to rumble – as the vocals struggle to rise above a very busy backing track.

The problem isn’t so much a bad mix as a loose arrangement. The band’s own PR mentions the old school, live in the studio approach, but this track leaves the listener uncertain of what producer Marc Bugnard and the band actually had in mind.

The following ‘Out of Reach’ is much better, and features some well crafted harmonies and a stronger melody. Backing vocalist Florencia Giorgi’s duet with Matt adds an extra dimension on the electric ‘Miss J’, though it’s still a song in search of meaningful lyrics. The band further obscures it’s musical direction by heading for the bluesy boogie of ‘Bourbon Blues’, before a return to their heavier roots on the metal drone of ‘Cum On Babe’.

Ironically, it’s Mind The Gaep’s own sense of adventure and stylistic variety that highlights their shortcomings.  The unexpected ballad ‘What Does Love Mean’ cruelly exposes Matt’s phrasing, as he over sings in an attempt to bring emotion to the song.

Just when you think they have given it their best shot and failed, they finish with an unexpected sax break from Alexander Hanke on ‘Midnight Dance’. The resulting groove might have better suited the album earlier on, though there is  also a pregnant pause leading to an acoustic coda, that finds vocalist Diener and the band exploring an acoustic, Axl Rose /Guns N’ Roses type ballad.

The end-piece nearly works and suggests that with a bit more attention to their song writing and with better lyrics, Mind The Gaep might eventually find enough substance to fill their enthusiastic bluster. ***(3/5)

Album review: THE PETER ULRICH COLLABORATION – The Painted Caravan

The Peter Ulrich Collaboration - The Painted Caravan

Market Square Records [Release date 11.03.13] www.marketsquarerecords.co.uk

There is a certain ethereal quality in this album, an eclectic mix for sure from the percussionist Peter Ulrich who featured in cult bands Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil.

If Ulrich’s vocal delivery is somewhat limited in range it doesn’t actually matter because there are compensating delights in the use of Sara Wendt on backing and – on some pieces – lead vocals.  And Ulrich is also assisted by guitarist David Steele.  And anyway,  on ‘Starship (Golden Eye)’  and ‘Drug Of War’ there are echoes of Richard Hawley in Ulrich’s vocals – which may be a good thing or bad – but it’s certainly nothing to worry about and it certainly hasn’t done Hawley any harm.

At first glance, and because of its eclecticism, the album may seem somewhat formidable but after a few listens what emerges is a fine folksy journey and a great vibe that’s a little different.  The use of unusual instrumentation such as the ‘Chinese moon guitar’ and the ocarina add colour.  But I especially like the female backing vocals.

Only ‘Fanfare For The Lost Tribe’ sounds slightly out of kilter: it’s like David Munrow meets Afro Celt Sound System but without the synthesisers, whilst ‘The Desert’ sounds like Peter Gabriel meets George Harrison at a Hare Krishna meeting.  But it all adds to the quite unique-sounding proposition.  We must remember that Ulrich was a key feature in Dead Can Dance’s melding of folk and world influences with electronica.

The opener ‘In This Or Other Skin’ is stirring and infectious whilst ‘Pureland’ features Wendt on lead vocals and the song almost becomes a mantra with its eastern flavours.

‘The Secret Gardener’ and ‘Children Of The Rain’ are like something straight out of Haight-Ashbury,  wonderful sixties mid-tempo grooves with added brass on the former.

‘Dark Lover’ is more straight-forward folk but more accessible than anything the Incredible String Band have ever done.  And ‘Hanging Man’ continues the more typically folk theme of jealous love, with Catherine O’Grady’s suitably ringing uilleann pipes.

‘Love’s Skeleton’ has an almost ‘Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald’ lilt and is another standout along with the closing track ‘Tempest’.

I remember interviewing Kingsley Sage when he was in the excellent band Ammo,  and Sage has evidently collaborated on two tracks and helped with production.  Ammo seem to have disappeared but he is in good company with this musical troupe.

I am sure this album is best enjoyed on a warm summer’s day, imbibing anything that makes you feel happy.  In the middle of the winter this effect may be lost but ‘The Painted Caravan’ is no less fascinating for that. A bit hippy, maybe, a bit dippy, but quite wonderful in its own way.  ****

Album Review: TIR NA NOG – Strong In The Sun

a tear and smile

Esoteric Recordings

Kicking off with a rigorous, up-tempo take on Nick Drake’s ‘Free Ride’, Irish multi-instrumentalist duo, Leo O’Kelly and Sonny Condell (augmented by producer Procul Harum’s Matthew Fisher on keyboards amongst others) embark on their most ambitious work, segueing from balladry one moment to progressive fusion the next, via gentle rockers and even a spot of whimsy.

Recorded in 1973 for Chrysalis, an accomplished set comes by way of the previous year’s ‘A Tear And A Smile’ (***), produced by Terry Cox (Caravan, Family) and bolstered by Cat Stevens’ rhythm section of percussionist Barry de Souza and bassist Larry Steele, itself a step onto a more commercial footing from the campfire psych-folk of their witchy and exotic 1971 debut, ‘Tir Na Nog’ (****), both also reissued by Esoteric.

In fact, ‘Strong In The Sun’ constitutes such a jump forward within only two years it probably upset the sensibilities of folk purists even if the busy guitar and hypnotic percussive pattering already hinted at a broader canvas to come.

Compositionally their most rounded and mature outing to date, this album also benefits hugely from Fisher’s assured production and never falters in drive nor purpose, even in those moments when Tir Na Nog’s tendency to sentiment could otherwise cloy the palate.

No tricky third album for Tir Na Nog. As period folk rock goes, this is strong in any weather.

Album Review – THE KISS THAT TOOK A TRIP – How The Mighty Have Fallen

Cheap And Pretentious ( Release date – Out now)

Music comes in many forms and I like to think I have an open mind when listening to something new for the first time, hence the reason I got involved with reviewing in the first place. Most music has some merit to it, hell even One Direction can set your toe tapping, but occasionally you find something like this disc which disproves the rule.

The Kiss That Took A Trip is a one man project, the brainchild of Spaniard M.D.Trello, who has written, recorded and produced the whole album. What he has produced is minimalist, ambient pap that has little musical merit whatsoever.

The opening track ‘Xenia, Ohio’ is low-fi, ambient noise. If you placed a digital recorder between your fridge and central heating boiler you would achieve much the same effect. Things don’t get much better on track two either, it is basically the same as track one but with what sounds like a free form jazz band playing in the next room.

There are ten tracks on the album and not one of them has a tune or melody between them. It is quite a feat to produce so much that contains so little. There are jazzy interludes with random piano runs and the odd guitar flurry ( or guitar ambiances as M.D prefers to call them) mixed in with electronic bleeps and burps that make no sense. I do like a musical challenge, but a bit of form is a must.

Another surprising fact is that this is the third album by The Kiss…, I assume that the previous releases were also solo efforts as I find it hard to believe that anyone else would get involved in this project. This is the work of a man who produces and releases ‘music’ for himself, I could see him entering this album for the Turner Prize as I see it as more of an art project from someone with pretentions of grandeur.

To return to my opening paragraph, music takes many forms and you can’t please all the people all the time. With this however I can’t see anyone taking pleasure from giving ‘How The Mighty Have Fallen’ a spin.

No matter how bad an album is I always try to find a positive when reviewing and I did eventually with this one. The way the light caught the disc as it arced through the air and into the bin was quite stunning!

Star Rating – are you joking ?

Album review: TRIGGERFINGER – All This Dancin’ Around

Dramatico www.triggerfinger.net Released April 15th

Three piece band from Belgium featuring guitarist/vocalsit Ruben Block, drummer Mario Goossens and bass player Paul Van Bruystegem (aka Monsieur Paul). The album was produced by Greg Gordon in the famous Sound City studio, recently back in the limelight thanks to Dave Grohl’s upcoming film on the studio.

This is an album that has a few instant songs like the single and title track, that sounds like the Queens of the Stone Age (QUOTSA) and in fact the QUOTSA feel is back on the driving rocker ‘Cherry’. Other songs like ‘My Baby’s Got A Gun’ and ‘I’m Coming For You’ see vocalist Ruben Block hit the high notes to create a very eery effect. At the other of the scale they have a little country twang on ‘I Follow Rivers’ and one of the three bonus songs the acoustic ‘Soon’ carries on this theme. It is quite amazing the vocal dynamics that Ruben Block manages, all this and he is a pretty nifty guitarist as well.

Triggerfinger have already built a decent following and reputation and this album should see them step up a level. There is much to enjoy on here and whilst you wait for the upcoming QOTSA album this will keep you busy.
