Album review: FIVE HORSE JOHNSON – The Taking of Black Heart

Small Stone Records www.smallstone.com

The band have been going since 1995 and this album is their first since 2006 as they return from a hiatus. If you like your blues hard rock with a little stoner rock vibe this album will tick all your boxes. Their secret weapon is the harp playing of vocalist Eric Oblander. It complements the guitar and driving rhythm section perfectly as can be heard on ‘The Job’ or the superb ‘Mexico’. The band have also toured with Clucth and you can hear a little of that band in certain songs, most notably ‘Black Heart Baby’.

There is a little surprise on ‘You’re My Girl’ where Robin Zander of Cheap Trick fame guests and it sounds like a Black Crowes tune. Zander sounds perfect for this type of blues/hard rock tune.

The whole album is like a soundtrack to an imaginary western and titles like ‘Quick On The Trigger’ and ‘Shoot My Way Out’ only emphasize this more. Crank it up and enjoy!

News: Three ELO/JEFF LYNNE releases in April 2013

Just as the third quarter of 2012 brought three exciting works from JEFF LYNNE – his second solo album Long Wave, the freshly recorded Mr. Blue Sky – The Very Best Of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and the illuminating documentary Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne and ELO – 2013 will be marked by more treats from the creative force of ELO and one of rock’s most iconic figures.

On April 19th in Europe (April 22nd in the UK) and April 23rd in North America, Frontiers Records will release three albums: Electric Light Orchestra Live and two reissues, ELO’s Zoom (remastered and including a brand new track) and his debut solo album Armchair Theatre (also remastered, with two new brand new tracks). It’s all part of the 40th anniversary of ELO, who’ve sold 50 million-plus records worldwide. These releases will all feature new packaging and the Live CD will come in a special ecolbook edition.

* Electric Light Orchestra Live hasn’t been issued as an album until now. Taken from a 2001 performance for a PBS television special in Los Angeles at CBS Television City, the music was released as a DVD that year. The new hits-packed CD offers fans four tracks that weren’t on the DVD (‘Secret Messages’, ‘Sweet Talkin’ Woman’, ‘Twilight’, and ‘Confusion’) as well as two new, unreleased studio tracks, ‘Out of Luck’ (recorded in 2010) and ‘Cold Feet’ (recorded in 1992). Although the singularly accomplished British singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer has always preferred the creative experience of the recording studio, he is a compelling performer who’s always figured out ways to bring his distinctive widescreen musical universe to life onstage when he needed to.

* ELO’s Zoom – unavailable for over 10 years – has been remastered and features a brand new track, ‘One Day’ (recorded in 2004) as an added bonus, along with a live version of ‘Turn To Stone’ from 2001’s Zoom special on PBS. At the time of its original release in 2001, Lynne hadn’t issued an ELO album since 1986’s Balance Of Power. He called upon notable friends for a little help, enlisting contributions from longtime ELO member Richard Tandy as well as good friends GEORGE HARRISON and RINGO STARR. The result is an album rich in that distinct ELO sound – classic Lynne melodies and songwriting, foot-stomping rock anthems and sweet, sexy strings.

* Lynne’s first solo album, 1990’s Armchair Theatre, is a melting pot of different styles and influences featuring unexpected collaborations with Lynne’s heroes and close friends, including TOM PETTY, RICHARD TANDY and George Harrison. This reissue, unavailable for the last decade, includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks, ‘Borderline’ and ‘Forecast’ (both recorded in 1989). Interestingly, the album also features a few notable covers – ‘Don’t Let Go’, ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘September Song’ – that demonstrated Lynne’s flair for covers two decades before the release of 2012’s acclaimed Long Wave. Suitably, the core of the album is Lynne himself, though he also left room for the contributions of a few friends and fellow travelers. Harrison contributed guitars and vocals on a number of tracks. Petty co-wrote ‘Blown Away’, a gorgeously romantic ballad. Longtime ELO band member Richard Tandy also contributed on keyboards and other instruments. Armchair Theatre captures the musical genius of Jeff Lynne when – perhaps more than ever before – the world was his stage.

Outside of the success of ELO, Lynne has led a remarkable career producing and collaborating with many of the greatest musical artists of all time. They include a number of Lynne’s all-time heroes like ROY ORBISON, DEL SHANNON, George Harrison, PAUL MCCARTNEY, Ringo Starr, and remarkably, even THE BEATLES themselves, as well as contemporaries like Tom Petty and JOE WALSH, whose new album Analog Man, Lynne recently produced some tracks for. Together with Harrison, Orbison, Petty and BOB DYLAN, Lynne was, of course, a member of the Grammy award-winning TRAVELING WILBURYS – a super group like no other.

“I’ve been in love with music since I was probably just five years old,” says Lynne. I was mad for music then – and I still am today.”

News: New film ‘VINYL’ hits cinemas on 15th March 2013

VINYL’ hits cinemas on 15th March 2013

Starring Phil Daniels, Keith Allen, Perry Benson and Jamie Blackley

Leicester Square Premier 12th March 2013

PHIL DANIELS AND KEITH ALLEN TO STAR IN NEW FILM BASED ON THE ALARM’S MUSIC INDUSTRY SCAM

Released in cinemas across the UK from 15th March, Phil Daniels and Keith Allen star in ‘Vinyl’, a new film inspired by the true story of The Alarm, who in 2004 fooled the music industry to have their first hit in over a decade.

Starring much-loved British icons Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia) and Keith Allen (Trainspotting), with Perry Benson (This Is England) and charismatic newcomer Jamie Blackley (London Boulevard), ‘Vinyl’ is loosely based on Welsh punk-rock band The Alarm’s 2004 scam, when the punk-rockers scored their first hit in over a decade by releasing their single ’45 RPM’ under the cover of a fictitious teenage group called The Poppy Fields.

Written and directed by Sara Sugarman (Confessions of A Teenage Drama Queen), and produced by John H. Williams (Shrek) and Preston Clay Reed, ‘Vinyl’ echoes  The Alarm’s story, when they correctly assumed the media would ignore the single if they knew who was behind it. Setting out to prove that ageism was alive and well with the British music industry, The Poppy Fields’ ‘debut single release’ subsequently gained significant airplay and charted in the UK Top 30. With the industry successfully duped, Mike Peters revealed the scam live on-air during Radio 1’s chart countdown, causing an international news sensation that grabbed headlines across the world. The band then edited the singles video, which had until then only featured The Poppy Fields, to also include The Alarm

Click here to watch the 45 RPM video: http://youtu.be/xMnbHbmMD6k

In the film, after a booze-fuelled reunion jam session, Johnny Jones (Phil Daniels) and his old band-mates from the once-famous ‘The Weapons of Happiness’ come up with a gem of a pop-punk single. The problem is that no one is interested in re-signing a bunch of ageing rock stars. But Johnny’s not one to quit easily and, along with his band-mates, assemble a talentless bunch of teenagers to be the face of their new single and set about hoodwinking top record labels, radio DJs and the entire rock music world by releasing a single under a fictitious teenage band’s name. Holed-up in a house in North Wales, The Weapons of Happiness then teach these young upstarts how to talk the talk and walk the walk, before unleashing them and their single upon the nation.

The film’s soundtrack album, released on 11th March, features a collection of new songs by The Alarm, such as the movie’s thematic anthem ‘Free Rock And Roll’ (which features Phil Daniels sharing lead vocals with The Alarm’s Mike Peters. Click here to see the video: http://youtu.be/ginqS1x88Sg and a clutch of vibrant sub-three minute power-pop-punk songs.

To coincide with both the film and the soundtrack’s release, The Alarm will be touring the UK from 28th February and, in conjunction with ReverbNation, are giving independent and un-signed artists the chance to open for The Alarm. Mike Peters explains what you need to do here: http://www.reverbnation.com/thealarm

Apart from playing on the tour, one of the chosen artists/bands will have the chance to play at the official premiere screening of ‘Vinyl’ on 12th March at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square, London.

Mike Peters says,  “On August 18th 1979, I travelled to London to see Phil Daniels star in ‘Quadrophenia’ at a cinema on Oxford Street, and then took the tube to Wembley to see The Who perform the soundtrack live. ‘Vinyl’ provides The Alarm and film fans with a similar opportunity to see the movie and then hear the soundtrack at the same time. It’s going to be an amazing, one-off experience that will hopefully unite fans of cinema and rock ‘n’ roll in a unique way.”

The Alarm’s ‘Vinyl’ tour dates are as follows:

Album Review: THE FIRE – Supernova

Valery Records (Release date – out now)

Supernova is the third album from Italian AOR outfit The Fire. The band have been together for seven years and have toured with some big names including Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Fall Out Boy amongst others. The band are led by Olly Riva, former frontman of Shandon, Italian SKA punks of some note. This latest album though is about as far removed from SKA punk as you can get.

The Fire produce polished, melodic, pop rock with hints of Queen, ELO and U2 in parts. The U2 influence is most evident in the guitar sound with good use being made of the delay pedal and multi layered riffs.

The album starts out well with the opening three tracks proving to be catchy, poppy songs. You can though get too much of a good thing and as the album progresses the tracks all become very similar and you are soon craving something a bit more ballsy. One track, ‘Mr Pain’, just about hits the mark but falls short whilst ‘Waltzin’ Monnalisa’ gets too close to Panic At The Disco for comfort.

There are things to like here and the odd track in isolation would be fine but to sit through a whole album takes a bit of stamina.

News: BIG COUNTRY new album ‘The Journey’

BIG COUNTRY

BRUCE WATSON (GUITAR) • JAMIE WATSON (GUITAR) • MIKE PETERS (VOCALS) • DEREK FORBES (BASS) • MARK BRZEZICKI (DRUMS)

THE JOURNEY

NEW STUDIO ALBUM & UK TOUR

APRIL 2013

Big Country will release their brand new studio album, The Journey as they embark on a 14-date tour of the UK this April.  Released on Cherry Red Records, this is Big Country’s ninth studio album and their first since the sad and untimely death of lead singer and songwriter, Stuart Adamson in December 2001.

Recorded on the Welsh border town of Wrexham in an old cold war nuclear bunker, with 8-feet thick walls and no phone or internet signal, group members found themselves isolated and disconnected from the outside world, allowing for an interesting and productive time in the studio.

Aptly titled, The Journey is released some two years after Big Country embarked on a new era, when guitarist and founder member Bruce Watson officially invited Mike Peters (The Alarm) to join them as lead vocalist for two concerts to celebrate 30 years since the group’s formation. Two years of intense and emotional touring followed and as diehard followers and critics alike responded positively and a whole new generation of fans were created, the group, imbued with new energy and passion, performed at many of the UK and Europe’s most prestigious festivals, including Isle of Wight, V, T In The Park and Oxygen.

More recently, Big Country has been joined by another long-standing friend of the group, Derek Forbes (Simple Minds), who took over bass guitar duties from original bassist Tony Butler who retired gracefully in 2012. Derek was recently voted Best Scottish Bass Player of all time and, in the words of Tony Butler himself “plays a mean D”.

Mike Peters has had a long and heartfelt association with Big Country. He first met Stuart Adamson in 1983 and was with him at his last ever Big Country show at Glasgow’s Barrowlands in 2000. Mike, who has fought and won two very public battles with cancer, also credits the words of In A Big Country as literally inspiring him to “Stay Alive” during his illnesses.

Mike wrote 99% of the lyrics for The Journey, a challenge he accepted in the knowledge that it would mean having to look into the soul of the band’s original lyricist, Stuart Adamson, whose words revealed someone who was at once both positive and pessimistic.  Moreover, Mike realised the importance of following the formula for all of the great Big Country songs, which started life as instrumentals; a guitar phrase from founder member Bruce Watson or a drum break and piano melody by Mark Brzezicki, with lyrics and vocal melody coming after the music had been created by the band as a unit.

“There are themes of redemption and of coming to terms with a life lived all through this record, and the process has brought us together as a family united and ready to stand proud for what and who we are…..Big Country.”  (Mike Peters)

“I am looking forward to the next Big Country chapter…. it feels right and fitting that Big Country continue the journey… and as Stuart always said, “When taking a journey, it’s not about the getting there, it’s enjoying the view on the way””  (Mark Brzezicki)

Album review: DAN REED – Signal Fire

Dan Reed - Signal Fire

Zero One Music [Release date 18.02.13]

Let’s get one thing clear.  Don’t expect another ‘Tiger In A Dress’ and start thinking semi-acoustically.  Dan Reed’s previous album, 2010′s ‘Coming Up For Air’, dispensed with the funk metal of his late-eighties big hair days and reflected where he had travelled – musically and spiritually- over a two decade period.

Like ‘Air’, ‘Signal Fire’ is full of super tunes and continues its themes of love and seeking a better world through positive actions.  If times were better, the album would be all over the daytime radio schedules: easy on the ear, highly accessible, and lyrically uplifting.  US AOR written all over it.

I interviewed Dan Reed several years back when he was embarking on a comeback UK tour with only an acoustic guitar in hand, but I was impressed the way his earlier band-based songs – and heavy ones at that – easily transformed to a pared-back treatment:  the true sign of great songwriting and an inner confidence.

Having dispensed with any ‘Tiger In A Dress’ fixation (and you won’t be alone) this album is awash with good stuff from the urgent opener ‘Signal Fire’, via the early single ‘All I Need Is You’ and ‘Only Love’ to the environmentally/politically-aware ‘Last Leaf’,  ‘Soul Warrior’ and ‘Drive On’.

‘Avalanche’ and ‘Indestructible’ provide contrasting standouts, the former more upbeat whilst the latter is darker but provides no less of an impact.

Stylistically the album reminded me a little of the last Mike & The Mechanics album but the songs are better.

‘Signal Fire’ is only a tad more rocky than its predecessor and deploys modern production effects which when grafted to essentially anthemic songs – and a gracious lack of autotune – puts this right out there as one of the best pop/rock albums of its kind, from a true craftsman.  *****

Gig Review: THE BRONX – The Garage, Glasgow, 16 February 2013

Saturday night in Glasgow, what better thing to do than nip along to The Garage to see possibly the finest hardcore band on the planet ? On entering the hall just after the doors opened though I was beginning to think perhaps I was alone in this thought as the hall was decidedly empty. I needn’t have worried though as by the time first band of the night, Axis Of, kicked off, the crowd had begun to gather.

The incomers were met by the sound of three Irishmen rocking hard and giving their all. Axis of have been around for a couple of years and have just released a new album, ‘Finding St Kilda’, which provided the basis for tonight’s set.

The three guys, Niall, Ewan and Ethan, really let rip on stage and created a glorious, melodic, hardcore racket which went down well with the gathering crowds. The band put in a very physical performance onstage and were a hoot to watch. Their 30 minute slot went quickly and they walked off to well deserved cheers, a band to catch again I think.

Next up were Canadian rockers, Single Mothers. The five piece from London, Ontario, wandered onstage  all dressed in black jeans and black t-shirts and launched into their opening track. Again hardcore punk was the order of the day but two things became apparent very quickly, the first was that the band take themselves very seriously and the second was that frontman Drew Thomson had had a few. Single Mothers brand of hardcore is a fairly tuneless affair which after Axis Of was a bit of an anti-climax, the band’s stage persona also seems a bit false and forced. I never really warmed to the guys and the reaction at the end of the set suggested I was not alone in this thought.

The night before this gig I sat and watched the footage on the news of the devastation that had been wrought on a Russian town from the sonic boom of a passing meteor. After The Bronx set tonight The Garage was in a similar state. The band live are an unstoppable, natural force that everyone should witness at least once. There are no airs or graces with these guys, they all set up their own gear just before the show and take to the stage with little fuss.

The set kicked off with ‘The Unholy Hand’, the opening track from the band’s new album, ‘The Bronx IV’, and the crowd went suitably mental. ‘White Tar’ followed with frontman Matt Caughthran whipping up the crowd, bouncing around the stage like a kangaroo on speed. Matt is not one for sticking to the stage for long though and jumped the barrier into the crowd for the next number, ‘Shitty Future’. It never ceases to amaze me how he can bark out the vocals to a song whilst in the middle of the pit or being passed bodily overhead to the front of the stage by the crowd, never missing a beat.

The rest of the band were on fire on stage. The twin guitar work of Joby and Ken was intense and melodic in equal measure whilst the rhythm section of Brad and Jorma provided a solid, driving bassline. The stage though belonged to Matt who held court and preached to the faithful between songs. By the time we reached the song ‘Six Days A Week’ the crowd were rabid and were further pushed to surf and stage dive when Matt declared himself ‘Head of Security’ and joined The Garage bouncers at the barrier helping to pull guys and girls over, again he never missed a beat, who says that guys can’t multi-task!

The set was a good balance of old and new with the 1,2 ,3 of ‘White Guilt’, ‘Ribcage’ and ‘They Will Kill Us All (Without Mercy)’ proving particularly spectacular. Matt  then announced that they had two tracks left, the band don’t do encores as such they just keep the pace and momentum going, and rounded off the set with ‘Heart Attack America’ and the brutal ‘History’s Stranglers’.

The Bronx once again proved themselves to be one of the best live bands on the planet and the exiting sweaty masses were testament to that fact. This was a stunning display of hardcore at its finest with a soundtrack that is both socially aware and hard hitting, but that will have you humming the hooky choruses all the way home. Live music doesn’t get much better than this!

Set List

The Unholy Hand, White Tar, Shitty Future, Under The Rabbit, Rape Zombie, Too Many Devils, Six Days A Week, Youth Wasted, Knifeman, False Alarm, White Guilt, Ribcage, They Will Kill Us All (Without Mercy), Heart Attack America, History’s Stranglers

Album review: RAGE OF ANGELS – Dreamworld

Escape Music

Rage Of Angels is the brainchild of original Ten keyboards player Ged Rylands and he has also worked with Danny Danzi and more recently guested on the enjoyable Love Under Cover album also on Escape. The band features Martin Kronlud (guitars), Pera Johanssen (drums) and Michael Carlsson (bass) who are joined by guest vocalists and guitarists who include Tommy Denander, Danny Vaughn and former Bad Company vocalist Robert Hart, plus another former Ten member guitarist Neil Fraser plays lead guitar on most songs.

It does sound like Ten at times with epic soundscapes and big keyboards, none more so than on the title track where Matti Alfonzetti (Impera/Red, White & Blues) sings. Some songs sound like their vocalists bands, for instance ‘See You Walking’ features Harry Hess and the tune could easily slot onto his solo work or a latter day Harem Scarem album.

Danny Vaughn is superb on ‘Over and Over’, a song that is a melodic rock gem and has lovely backing vocals on the choruses. His other song on here ‘Spinnin’ Wheel’ is the weakest on the album though and it is is his vocal that saves the day.

Great to hear Robert Hart singing again and ‘Through It All’ has a little Bad Company feel in the playing of Neil Fraser. He also does a good vocal turn on ‘We Live, We Breathe,  We Die’ and listen out for Ten/Asia guitarist Vinny Burns on the solos. Primal Fear’s Ralf Scheepers injects a little metal into the proceedings on ‘Falling’ – he sounds so much like Rob Halford at times!

The instrumental with voiced over news samples ‘Requiem for the Forgotten Soldier’ is a veritable guitar fest featuring Vinny Burns and Ralph Santolla (Millennium/Iced Earth) dueling all over the place. The song as you’d expect features the heaviest riff on the album.

This album has had some hype behind it and I am pleased to report it is justified. Enjoyable and varied epic melodic rock with a little metal here and there. Great stuff and be great to see these songs performed live and there is already talk of a second album.

Album reviews: KILL DEVIL HILL, HINDER, NITROGODS, KINGCROW

KILL DEVIL HILL  – S/T
SPV www.spv.de

Where have I been?  Kill Devil Hill is a new project instigated by Vinnie Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio, Rainbow) and Rex Brown (Pantera) and this work was released at the end of May 2012.

Two lesser-known individuals in Mark Zavon (guitar) and Dewey Bragg (vocals) form the remainder of the band, but they prove to play a strong role in this project.  The sound on this work has heavy Black Sabbath influences within a modern rock sound a la Alice in Chains/Soundgarden – with some groove-laden guitar hooks tossed into the mix.  Brown excels in this work with his bass work, adding an extra dimension to Appice’s thunderous drumming and Zavon’s strong guitar work.  The songs are constructed such that the listener does not get bored…

This is a monster album that deserves a hard rocker’s attention!  Superb.

HINDER – Welcome to the Freakshow

It’s a tough life being a rock star.  The fourth album from Canadian rockers Hinder begins to showcase the hardships of relentless touring and recording…

As ever, the band produces their own sound of melodic modern rock: some great driving tunes, some soft and marshmallowy ballads, with topics ranging from rocking, partying, grabbing a few one night stands, relationship heartbreak etc.  Nothing different from their previous offerings, but the album sounds as if they’ve lost their edge – there isn’t a song that jumps out at you and slaps you in the face.

Still one of the best modern rock bands out there, but “Welcome to the freakshow” is not their best work.  Still a good listen, though…

NITROGODS – S/T
SPV www.spv.de

Nitrogods is a rocking trio hailing from Germany.  This self-titled work is their debut release.

This album is relentless in the way it rocks your socks off!  With more than a slight doff of the cap to Motorhead in terms of musical influence, this release smacks of driving blues rock, heavy smoke and lots of whisky (try “Wasted in Berlin” for size).

While not necessarily original, the music and attitude will have you nodding your head and tapping your feet (or burying the throttle if you’re driving!).  A superb album if you like your rawk a little dirty.

ØL – Cortello Morello
Art Development Productions

A German band on the go since 1996, Øl has produced a sizeable number of EP’s and albums (over twenty) over the years.

The band produces melodic, yet melancholic, pop rock with touches of Big Country and Red Hot Chili Peppers (without the funk).  The vocalist (couldn’t find his name) has strains of Blaze Bayley to his voice and is well supported with harmonizing vocals where necessary.  The introductory track is a little unnecessary (recordings of radio reports), but the band can be forgiven for this, as the rest of the album flows smoothly and effortlessly.
Easy listening pop rock (more rock than pop) with haunting, melodic tunes.  For those who don’t necessarily like a hard edge to their rock music, this comes highly recommended.

GOLDEN RERSURRECTION – One Voice for the Kingdom
Liljegren Records

Christian Liljegren and Tommy ReinXeed are of the hardest working Scandinavian musicians as of late, as they pound out album after album, some with great success.  This work is Golden Resurrection’s third release since they formed in 2009…
The aim was to produce a more in-your-face metal album than the neo-classical rock they are more renowned for.  While they managed to succeed in their endeavour, it has come with a few disadvantages.  Liljegren has one of the most powerful voices in metal, yet his voice has not been mixed to sound that way – it sounds more subdued.  The same can be said for ReinXeed’s wailing solos…it needed to be brought to the fore.  As a result, the songs come across as not much better than average.  The lack of variation in song tempo eventually makes this work a bit tiresome to listen to.

The talent is there, but I believe if more time was spent bringing out the artists’ strengths there would have been more to be enthusiastic about.  For fans only.

KINGCROW – In Crescendo
Sensory

Kingcrow is an Italian progressive band specialising in incorporating the elements of metal in their work.  “In Crescendo” is their fourth album and with it comes a change in ideas…
The album is a change in that there is a heavy element of progressive rock added to the mix.  This results in a melodic rock album with various changes in tempo, soaring vocals, frenetic guitar solos and solid, heavy rhythm guitar.  It makes for a very pleasant listen, with the longer tracks (such as the title track) remaining interesting to listen to.

A fine progressive rock release worthy of your attention.  If you enjoy Dream Theater, you’re going to love this.

STARFIRE – The Way I Am

Dynasty Records www.starfiremusic.com

Starfire is the project of vocalist Dairenn Lombard and this CD was released last autumn, although the songs may pre-date that. Mind you he could do with updating his website as the last updates were back in 2011.

Sorry to report that this album is amongst the worst I have heard for awhile. The production is poor quality and the songs have some so-so melodies but the lyrics on say  ‘Lip Service’ would even make Gene Simmons cringe…

Avoid big time.

MOTHER OF GOD – Anthropos

Small Stone Records www.smallstone.com

Swedish band who have released a couple of EP’s to date before this their debut album on Small Stone Records, a label fast becoming a leading light for stoner/classic 70′s groove rock albums. Mother Of God look set to carry on the high standards as they have a varied and enjoyable musical array on this album.

Definite highlight is the foot stomping ’230′, classy groovy hard rock. They show their stoner/space rock side on songs like ‘Aim For The Sun’ and the wonderfully trippy ‘Adrift’. Mind you listen ‘To Live’ and they rock out like Pearl Jam jamming with Sabbath and the added organ makes the song heavier. The extended jam of ‘Lucy’ takes the listener from frantic riffs through to more mellower moments, impressive stuff.

There is much to enjoy on here – an album to chill out to and savour.

Album review: KROKUS – Dirty Dynamite

This is an unapologetic celebration of all that is right with blues hard rock. ‘Dirty Dynamite’ is the follow up to 2010’s  ‘Hoodoo’ and pretty much picks up where that album left off. The core of the classic Krokus line up is retained here – Storace (vocals), Von Arb (guitar), Kohler (guitar) and Von Rohr (bass), but previous member Mandy Meyer rejoins as third guitarist.

The great Swiss survivors have served up a swaggering dollop of gimmick free, good time music. From the moment the mut growls on the opening to ‘Hallelujah Rock n Roll’ and the low-fi “Come and get me, rock n roll” snarls out of the speakers, you know what you are in for. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The album opener has Storace rasping ‘can you feel it’, over the anthemic chorus, so comfortable in his Johnson/Scott retrofit skin. ‘Go Baby Go’ is an honest to goodness boogie ripping by on a three guitar riff and nodding respect to any number of pimped up Chuck Berry standards on the way through. The excellent title track is proper bar room stuff, with a low down (if time-worn) blues hook.

The tag of AC/DC imitators won’t go away, of course. But now in their 40th year, I guess the band doesn’t care much about that anymore.  Airborne have managed to win some respectability for their accadacca cloning and in many ways its good to see Krokus returning to what they do best. This album isn’t the high water mark of the metal-influenced ‘Headhunters’, but neither is it the radio airplay-chasing syrup of ‘Change of Address’.

Bassist Chris Von Rohr doubles as producer here and twiddles the illustrious knobs of the Abbey Road studio to come up with a lean, tight sound without an ounce of flab or waste. The feel is a maybe a little too polished and lacks some of the grit and spit of ‘Hoodoo’.

But there is so much to like here. ‘Rattlesnake Rumble’ has a great drum track  (courtesty of guest tub-thumper Kosta Zafirou) snapping under well-worked solos and power plays and ‘Better Than Sex’ has a killer riff nicked straight from Triumph’s ‘I Can Survive’, I swear!

Krokus are fond of their covers and clearly Von Rohr was influenced by the Abbey Road surroundings. A stab at ‘Help’ is brave. The Beatles standard gets the full force metal ballad workover with emotive guitars, gospel vocal touches and a few kitchen sinks. I can’t decide whether I love it or hate it.

I’ll forgive the odd filler too (‘Doeg Song’ isn’t their finest moment) and instead wallow in an album chock full of potent riffs, blues barbed guitar licks and rasping vocal hooks. Here’s to the next 40 years.

Album Review: CLIMAX BLUES BAND – Reissues

Repertoire

‘Shine On’ (REP 5202) finds the Climax Blues Band on an upward commercial curve. Their previous album had delivered a big hit ‘Couldn’t Get It Right’ on both sides of the Atlantic and featured the enduring funk of ‘Chasing Change’.  By the time of ‘Shine On’ the band’s quest for a follow up hit gave them a number one album stateside, even if they couldn’t quite ‘get it right’ again on the singles front.

Climax had signed to Warner Brothers and wrote most of their material while on the road in the States. The results are polished and commercial, but a sharp shift away from their blues roots. No matter, there are plenty of quality songs here, albeit they sometimes veer towards middle of the road territory. This is especially so on the radio friendly ‘Makin Love’ with its uplifting chorus and The Eagles influenced ‘When Talking Is Too Much Trouble’. Colin’s baritone covers ‘The Gospel Singer’ with a sticky treacle vocal, but together with some potent choral bv’s it works in a crossover way. By the time of the dance floor friendly funk of ‘Whatcha Feel’ the band are in Average White Band mode and close to more radio success. ‘Like A Movie’ meanwhile,  is a distant cousin of ‘Couldn’t Get It Right’ and they add a belated slice of rock and roll on the aptly titled ‘Champagne& Rock ‘n’Roll’ as if to reference their blues roots. (****)

1979’s ‘Real To Reel’ (REP 5212) was recorded at George Martin’s Air studios in the Caribbean – a million miles away from the punk infested UK scene – and it’s a sophisticated affair with well crafted songs, glistening harmonies and a polished production that explores sumptuous grooves. For an English band from Stoke onTrent, Climax now sounded more American than several of theirUScounterparts. Indeed ‘Summer Rain’ almost approached the sophistication and laid back feel of Steely Dan, but this is in sharp contrast to the Johnny Guitar Watson vocal phrasing of the dance friendly ‘Money In Your Pocket’.

The double lead vocals on ‘Children of the Night Time’, is a near forgotten gem and Colin adds another great vocal on the funky ‘Lovin’ Wheel’, a number that is only dated by the use of synth guitar. Pete Haycock also indulges in some opening BB King licks on ‘Fallen In Love (For The Very Last Time)’ before an Eagles style vocal.

And just when you think the band are slipping dangerously into MOR territory they redress the balance with the scintillating rocker ‘Fat City’, on an album that crosses over funk into MOR radio territory but with just enough kick (****)

If 1980’s ‘Flying the Flag’ (REP5211) was a statement of their British origins, the music doesn’t bear it out. The album opens with a catchy disco pop cover ‘Gotta Have More Love’. The song is well suited to Colin’s earthy baritone and is counter balanced by banks of synth lines and a dance floor groove worthy of hit status as a follow up to ‘Couldn’t Get It Right’.

As it is, they achieved a follow up hit with Derek Holt’s insipid ballad ‘I Love You’ which sounds like a Leo Sayer cast off. The following Cooper/Holt composition ‘Hold On To Your Heart’ sounds like a thinly veiled reprise. Unfortunately, their attempts at commerciality also tended to middle of the road pap, as evidenced by the forgettable ‘Dance The Night Away’. Only the tough retro rocking of ‘Blackjack And Me’ makes any attempt at redressing the balance (***)

As with ‘Flying the Flag’, the songs on 1981’s ‘Lucky For Some’ (REP 5209) are individually credited rather than band compositions, a worrying trend for a band lost in their commercial tinged MOR style. Haycock’s ‘Victim’ comes with a big harmony chorus, while the tick-toc rhythm of the Cuffley/Holt ‘Cuttin’ Up Rough’- a tale of revenge – is surprisingly good, with its funky, electric piano led groove and double vocal lines. But there’s far too much stodge and a lack of real inspiration on the rest of the album, with hammy mid-tempo ballads and the calamitous white boy reggae of ‘This Time You’re the Singer’, albeit sung with a Steve Miller style vocal.

And just when all seems lost, the band belatedly comes up with a group composition, ‘Last Chance Saloon’ which has a wonderful wistful feel and brilliant vocal from Colin Cooper. Unsurprisingly it became a belated band staple when they reformed in ‘86. But with only one real highlight it’s hard to recommend this album (**)

‘Sample And Hold’ (REP5203) marked new territory for Climax, as they signed with Virgin while desperately trying to make sense of a fast changing musical scene.

They start off confidently with the excellent Haycock penned ‘Friends in High Places’ which features all the Climax trademarks of a husky Cooper vocal, a funky rhythm track, a snappy arrangement and a good verse. The Haycock/Cooper penned ‘Sign of the Times is equally good, being a mellifluous rocker with a lovely descending hook, while Haycock’s ‘Walking On Sunset’ has an eye on radio plays again. But you have to overlook the Missing Persons style, synth led, new wave pop of ‘Shine’ before you come to another gem, Cooper’s ‘Movie Queen’.  He delivers a perfect vocal with great phrasing on a well crafted song and a great hook, that was resurrected by the reformed band in the mid 80’s.

Sadly the rest of the cd is a case of slowly diminishing returns, with Haycock’s ‘Doin’ Alright’ being another Eagles pastiche, and Frankie Miller’s ‘I’m Ready’ is ill suited to a band more used to exploring laid back horizons.(***)

It would be five long years before the band returned without Haycock but with the surprisingly good ‘Drastic Steps’

Album Review: DAVID MIGDEN & THE DIRTY WORDS – Killing It

Promo

Every once in a while you stumble something a little different and an album that reaffirms your belief in the potency of the independent release.  In David Midgen case it’s not so much the wide array of musical genres – spanning, jazz, blues, Americana and soul – as the way he bring his arresting baritone and effortless vocal range to bear on a range of eclectic lyrics and rootsy self penned songs. The result is a surprisingly cogent and accessible album that ebbs and flows as it delivers moments of musical excellence and emotional clarity.

David Migden is based in the UK, but hails from Little Rock,Arkansas and you suspect the imagery of his narratives harks back to his formative years in the south. There’s a troubled undertow to some of his reflective songs, but refreshingly, David is adventurous enough to showcase his Lou Rawls meets Gill Scott Heron style vocals into non traditional musical outlets. And it’s that sense of adventure that makes this record such a triumph.

The band album is credited to David Midgen and the Dirty Words, a word play that reflects some of his lascivious lyrics and the fact that the magnificent musical arrangements and their faultless execution are very much a band effort. He opens with an arresting funky title track, slipping into falsetto mode to deliver the definitive line ‘I’m killing it by degrees’, as a stylish confirmation of his excellence.

You would imagine such a song and the following staccato funk of ‘Blues’ – a title more germane to the lyrical meaning that genre – being on a Bootsy Collins or Mudbone record. He then veers into a mariachi trumpet opening for the bass heavy shuffle meets New Orleans jazz of ‘Old Joe’, and dips into the acoustic ‘Shel’, a narrative led ode to the late American poet/cartoonist Shel Silverstein.

Migden has a talent for eclectic couplets even if the full meaning of the song sometimes evades the listener. But it all generally works well on the back of some subtly interwoven words and snappy arrangements.

In the space of the first 4 tracks he shifts from industrial funk to Harry Chapin mode. And he doesn’t stop there, slipping into a scat intro on ‘D.A.W.T.P.W.M?’ suggesting he’s an overworked muso looking to get his rocks off.

‘Killing It’ is a multi faceted album, but it’s on the more restrained pieces like the piano led ‘Heaven’ and the meditative quasi spiritual ‘The Line’, that David best reveals himself as a magnificent singer with something to say.

The excellent production captures both Migden’s eloquent phrasing and clever word plays and is only a couple of songs short of being truly outstanding. Well worth seeking out. **** (4/5)

Album Review: LORDI – To Beast Or Not To Beast

AFM Records [Release date 04.03.13]

Lordi came to many people’s attention after winning the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ and of course their eye catching onstage costumes.  This is their sixth studio album and the band have two new members, drummer Mana (replacing Tonmi ‘Otus’ Lillman who passed away last year) and keyboards player Hella but fear not the unmistakable vocals of Mr Lordi still front the band!  The striking cover artwork and the album’s title have a Shakespearean flavour, although don’t go expecting a concept album based on the Bard and his play ‘Hamlet’.

‘The Riff’ is the lead single and it recalls the instantly catchy ‘Blood Red Sandman’. Great lyric as well with the devil listening to too much  of that ‘hip hop s***’ and the Grim Reaper hands over to Mr Lordi to keep the riffs going. Lordi are very good at penning catchy hard rock tunes that recall bands like Kiss and Twisted Sister. ‘Happy New Fear’ is just so damn catchy as the band utilise heavy riffs and keyboard runs to good effect.’I Luv Ugly’ could vie with ‘Happy New Fear’ as the next possible single release, although any song of here could make rock radio airplay, well rock radio that veers of the staple classic rock playlists.

They also raise a smile with the lyrics to ‘Schizo Doll’ – like the lyrics of Alice Cooper meets a Kiss riff and ‘Candy For The Cannibal’ keeps the riffs coming along nicely.

Not so sure on the slightly dodgy lyrics of ‘We’re Not Bad For The Kids (We’re Worse)’ and ‘Sincerely With Love’ is not as the song title might suggest a gushing ballad, but rather a f-word strewn tune. They also pay tribute to their late drummer Otus on ‘SCG06 Otus Butcher  Clinic’, a recording of his  live drum solos.

Lordi are still pumping out hard rock anthems and with their new label’s backing they are bound to have another hit on their hands.

Album review: OCTOBER TREE – The Fairy’s Wing

(Canvas Productions, 2012)

If there’s one thing in life that really gets up my nose it’s indulgence. Self indulgence is bad enough, but pandering to somebody else’s indulgence is just plain wrong.

And this is what has happened here. Greg Lounsberry, erstwhile leader of prog-lite October Tree decided to include his wife Tammy in the decision making process for the new album. “I want to make an album about fairies” was the apparent reply.

Now, rather than just giving her a bitch-slap and telling her not to be so stupid as no-one, anywhere is going to be interested, he indulged her and went off and wrote an allegorical novella about said fantasy creatures and ‘The Fairy’s Wing’ is the musical result.

What is really unfortunate is that the album is actually quite good with good song structures and excellent playing throughout – think Marillion with a female vocalist.

However, it doesn’t matter how good the music is, you just cannot escape the subject matter of the lyrics which are simultaneously both fatuous and risible. Track titles such as ‘The Ogre’, ‘Into The Glade’ and ‘Cult Of The White Witch’ give a flavour of the nonsense within and unless you have a real connection with mystical dwarves, witches, fairies and other such drivel, the album quickly becomes tiresome.

Like I said, it is a real shame as there is much to admire about the music – perhaps next time they could write about war, peace, politics, sport, love, poverty, anything other than fairies, and perhaps next time it might be worth a listen.

Incidentally the novella is available on Kindle if you really have both time and money to burn.

*** (for the music)

No stars (for the subject matter)

Album review: SAILOR FREE – Spiritual Revolution

(Tide Records, 2012)

This is definitely an album of ‘despites’. Despite not having English as their first language, despite this being a concept album and despite having a band name like a John Inman sit-com – this is actually a rather good record.

Hailing from Italy but not really slotting into the Rock Progressivo Italiano model, Sailor Free have been around for a few years now and certainly know their way around a tune.

‘Spiritual Revolution’, despite (again!) my initial fears that it may be some sort of God-bothering nonsense, is a concept album inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Silmarillion’. The press blurb goes on in some detail about mankind, osmosis, a better world and mind and spirit, which usually has punters running for the hills, but the music, despite (again!) all this bollocks, is worth persevering with.

Sounding to these ears like a prog/Goth band fronted by a an ‘80s indie band singer, the fourteen tracks on offer deliver the whole diversity of how good progressive rock music should be played.

Swinging from crunching guitar rifferama to delicate keyboard and acoustic passages in an instant, the album maintains a high quality level throughout.

While no awards will be won for pushing the boundaries of music onto another level, Sailor Free have delivered an album of considerable merit well worthy of a listen by all those tired of the general pap on offer these days.

Album review: X11 ALFONSO – Charles Darwin

(Self-release, 2012)

Every so often an album like this appears, that is so left-field, so out of kilter with the way things are, that it is extremely difficult to listen to and be totally objective.

Not that it is totally unlistenable – heaven forfend – but merely the fact that it’s such a colossal piece of work with more facets than the Koh I Noor diamond which makes it so perplexing.

X11 Alfonso are a genre-busting, but essentially progressive rock band from France who have embarked on what is a paean to the life and work of Charles Darwin – a musical homage to one of history’s greatest scientists.

In order to achieve this the band have enlisted the help of a cast of thousands including prog luminaries such as Tim Renwick, John Helliwell, John Hackett, Iain Bairnson, Robin Boult and Maggie Reilly.

They have also spared no expense in the execution of this task either as this is a sumptuous triple CD set beautifully packaged in a 76 page hardback book wherein lie fifty two tracks: thirty instrumentals and twenty two songs telling the story of Darwin’s life, concepts and work.

That they are massive acolytes of Darwin is beyond question as evidenced by the amount of work that has gone into this and the sheer diversity of the music – swinging from jazz to folk to world to rock and all stations east.

And a lot of it is very good. There’s some wonderful acoustic guitar, some, at times, mesmerizing keyboards and plaintive piano and generally exemplary musicianship throughout  which would be a shoo-in anyway given the talent assembled.

There are two aspects unfortunately where the whole thing falls down.

Firstly, clocking in at over three hours, it is far too long. Attention drifts while listening to just one of the discs, never mind all three and by the end real fatigue has set in, not just with the music but also with the subject matter.

Second – and this is the real killer – is the libretto. Basically they have taken Darwin’s words from ‘The Origin Of Species’ and just tried to force them to fit the music – so basically what you have is prose sung to music with no rhyming and no pattern or structure, meaning one line might have five words, the next twenty seven.

This is really unfortunate as it makes the whole work sound both disjointed and, in all honesty, amateurish.

One can appreciate what is being attempted here and the effort put in by all the combatants, but whilst the album certainly has its moments (exclusively on the instrumentals) sadly, the end result fails to live up to the sum of its parts.

I wonder what Darwin would have thought about how this album evolved?

Gig review: PAIN – Borderline, London – 13 February 2013

Support Acts: Neosis

Review by Yiannis (John) Stefanis

Even though I consider myself to be fairly open-minded when it comes to music these days that was not so much the case in the mid 90s – the time when Death Metal maestro Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy fame decided to bring his Electro-Industrial Metal project Pain to life. Part of growing up, however, is expanding one’s horizons and tastes and it was not long before I finally managed to understand that what this Swedish musician/producer was trying to achieve was not only inspiring but also enjoyable.

Seven studio albums later, Pain have decided to celebrate eighteen years of existence through the release of a pretty comprehensive live CD/DVD/Blue Ray album entitled “We Come In Piece” – an album whose promotional tour began at the end of last year and whose second leg finds the band visiting the UK for a five day mini tour.

Having secured, with the kind assistance of local Nuclear Blast London, an interview slot with Peter on the 13th of February, I headed towards central London and the fairly “dimensionally challenged” Borderline in the backstage area of which I had a short but  very interesting chat with the man himself. After a short break for dinner, I made my way back to the venue to find a sea of people occupying every square inch of the dance floor. Settling for a place by the stage (no photo pit here), I chose the best place for a clear view of the stage.

My short break after the interview meant that I lost the performance of the first opening act so it was left up to the Geneva-based djent quartet Neosis to kick start things for me. Two songs after the band first hit the stage, I started to question whoever had decided to add this band on the bill: I did not appear to be the only one in the crowd who found it difficult to warm to the unnecessary complexity of their offerings.

Nevertheless, these four lads seemed quite happy to be in London and they did offer a dynamic and physical performance whose purpose was to promote the band’s debut release “Neosis”. Songs like “Unwilling Fate” and “Supremacy Design” were received well by the audience and, following the latter, band leader Tom provided the quote of the evening by saying “if you buy our CD after the show our bass player will give you a private lap dance” – an incentive not every member of the crowd might equally appreciate.

Since the stage was too small to host a full-on Pain show, it only really took fifteen minutes for the band’s roadies to prepare the stage for the band’s first ever headline show on UK soil. From young Gothsters and mature Metalheads to old-school Rockers, the  motley crowd was seething with anticipation, as suggested by the loud roar that followed the pre-recorded intro of “Let Me Out”.

This fast and heavy-riffed song set the right pace and energy early on and, from then onwards, all Peter and his hired guns needed to do was to keep the momentum going – which is what they did. Peter’s command of the crowd was uncanny, getting everyone to shout at the top of their lungs during “Walking On Glass” and helping create pit havoc during the performance of “I’m Going In”.

The Swede seemed content with the crowd’s reaction, judging by his “I think I am having an erection here”, prior to introducing the band’s hit “Dirty Woman”. Appreciative gestures continued to be exchanged between the band and the audience throughout the remainder of the show. Amongst the highlights of the show would be the performance of “The Great Pretender”, a song that was introduced by Peter pointing towards his head, the quite catchy “On & On”, as well as the duet “Same Old Song”/“Shut Your Mouth” which formed part of the band’s three track encore and which ensured that the last few drops of energy were squeezed out of the lucky few who had managed to get tickets to this sold out show.

Pain are of the type of band whose straight forward heavy riffs sound absolutely amazing in a live environment so it is really difficult to go to one of their shows and leave disappointed. Having said that, I believe it was pretty evident to all of us who attended the show that the Borderline, while being an intimate and…picturesque…. venue, was certainly not the right place to host such a show!

With every new album, Pain’s popularity is both undoubtedly and justifiably increased so I truly hope and expect that next time they come to the capital of the UK for a live show it will be in a venue that is fitting to both their status and sheer entertainment value!

Album reviews: HEXVESSEL – No Holier Temple

Svart Records – Out Now.

A year or so ago I remember coming across a review from a fellow journalist which was pretty complementary of “Dawnbearer”, the debut release by the Finnish Folk Metal outfit Hexvessel and even though I was initially quite intrigued to find out for myself what these guys were all about, I end up missing out  on that particular album.

Forward a year, the name Hexvessel has come up again, this time in an e-mail promoting the release of the band’s second studio album “No Holier Duty” and a sense of duty combined with instant access to the band’s latest material led me to write the review you are now reading.

Most young Finnish bands see Folk Metal as a vehicle for gloomy and atmospheric melodies/themes as those performed by Amorphis. Either that, or it’s up-tempo and…happy, Korpiklaani-style. Luckily, for me, Hexvessel’s musical journey has more things in common with the former, being similarly influenced by the early 70s in both sound and style, but they often steer away from the classical path by indulging in colourful psychedelia and heavy riffs which look towards bands like Pentagram and Witchcraft for inspiration. Sound good? You bet!

The first half of the album is quite moody and musically introvert, as demonstrated by slow acoustic pieces like “Heaven And Earth” and the piano led “Wilderness Is” and slow-paced vocally led themes reminiscent of latter-day Opeth, such as in “Woods To Conjure”. The scent of the Mediterranean is evoked through the accordion and mandolin tunes of “A Letter In Birch Bark” and by the time the short moody narrative of “Elegy To Goyahkla” is performed you will probably be thinking you have heard all there is to hear from this album. This is not the case, however.

Combining distorted riffs with clever flute melodies, “His Portal Tomb” is an ode to Pink Floyd and Witchcraft and paves the way towards heavier formulae. “Sacred Marriage” is one of the stand out tracks of the album, with 70s Manzarek-style (The Doors) keys creating in the process a wonderful trance-like mood for the listener.

Meanwhile,  the equally varied and melodically impressive “Unseen Sun” portrays the members of the band as technically intelligent musicians – further proof of which can be found in a killer cover of “Your Head Is Reeling”, originally performed by the 70s Psychedelic rockers Ultimate Spinach.

Even if Folk Rock or Metal are genres that you do not normally associate yourself with, I would still suggest you check out “No Holier Temple”. The cleverness with which this band mixes its various musical influences, together with their ability to create a good tune and sensational moody and atmospheric passages might just interest you.

I, for one, am pretty pleased to see young bands like Hexvessel breaking the mould by offering something different from their currently more commercially successful countrymen, especially when the music created is as impressive as what’s on offer here. A splendid album.

Interview with BIFF BYFORD (Saxon)

I have been in the presence of many fellow music journalists, all of whom had at least one disappointing tale to tell of meeting with a music idol who failed to meet their expectations.

Though I dreaded the same, I decided to put my fears aside and arrange a face to face interview with Saxon’s frontman Biff Byford. Luckily for me, the man who is responsible for the creation of some of the most amazing Heavy Metal tunes ever recorded, many included in the band’s latest studio album “Sacrifice”, also happened to be quite an accommodating and respectful interviewee – a proper gentleman indeed.

In an amazingly comfy room of a central London hotel Biff spoke to me about all things Saxon, how the band’s twentieth studio album came to life and the possibility of seeing these NWOBHM legends go…acoustic.

By Yiannis (John) Stefanis

Hi, Biff. It is an absolute pleasure talking to you in person. It is something that I have been thinking of doing many years now but I always ended up stopping myself thinking “maybe it’s better not to meet your heroes” just in case you end up becoming disappointed with them.

Biff: (laughs) OK, I see (laughs). So what changed your mind then?

Well, a couple of years ago I ended up talking to Doug (Scarratt: guitars) at a Dean Guitar exhibition and he was super friendly and accommodating, so that gave me the courage to aim for the ‘big guns’.

On top of that, there is an amazing new album entitled “Sacrifice” out soon, so this is as much the right time as any! Actually, my colleague who wrote our website’s review for the album has called it potential “album of the year”, even though we are still in early February!

Biff: (laughs) Thank you. Now, that is a good start indeed!

It is, but I cannot really blame him for describing it like that as it is a phenomenal album! I have been listening to this music enough years now to understand how important it is for a band that has been around as long as you guys to be still capable of recording such amazing music.

The album is absolutely sensational! You can really feel that it is a product of a labour of love and that there has been plenty of passion involved behind its creation. What is the secret of your success?

Biff: Well, with this album I wanted to step back a bit as I have produced it myself. I wanted to step back and right straight from the heart rather than the brain and, you know, everybody in Saxon are excellent musicians and I happen to play well also, so we are capable of doing quite intricate songs.

I wanted this album to be more of a mixture of our live power and of our song writing, so I just stepped back a bit and sort of thought of what it was that made us great in the 80s…; what did people like as well as what it is that makes us great now and what people like about us today. These are songs that, as I said, we just wrote naturally without thinking too much things like “is this bit too hard” or “is that bit right” but generally wrote songs that we can play live.

In my humble opinion, “Unleash The Beast” (1997) was a pivotal album in the sense that it brought Saxon firmly to the forefront of modern Metal as well as to the attention of a younger and hungry-for-Metal audience.

I always felt that, since the release of that album, there has been a constant struggle to bring the Rock n’Roll elements of your glorious past into some sort of harmony with the modern Heavy Metal riffs in your later material and I feel that “Sacrifice” is the first album where this harmony has finally been achieved

Biff: Yes, you are probably right.  It’s a great mixture of different elements. Some songs are quite modern, songs like “Sacrifice” and “Made In Belfast” with the latter incorporating elements of Celtic origin, but we also went back and we re-visited the 80s with songs like “Warriors Of The Road” and “Stand Up And Fight”.

Some of the remaining material contains some pretty intricate songs and I am referring here to “Guardians Of The Tomb” which is a Prog-y type of song but we also wrote some simple stuff like “Standing In The Queue” and “Wheels Of Terror” – the latter containing a very modern-sounding riff which makes it sound like a modern-day “Wheels Of Steel”. This song reminded me a lot of stuff by bands like Machine Head, you know what I mean? It is modern and heavy but we tried to make it sound more like “Wheels Of Steel”.

This is a very difficult balance to achieve and people are bound to react to it in a variety of ways. I bet you that you will have some people say “wow, this is too modern for me” while others will say “why did they go all classic  on us now”? You can never please everyone, right?

Biff: (laughs) You are right, you cannot win this battle. I am sure that the same kind of problem will be found in the Iron Maiden camp, the Motorhead camp and the Judas Priest camp so what you have to do is to simply write music which excites you first and then you see if other people like it. “Metalhead” (1999) was an album that was before its time but it is an album that is very much liked by Rock bands, but I believe that we were quite right in creating it as it brought us gracefully into the next millennium.

I remember wanting to write a dark album just because we fu*king wanted to and simply because we could – it’s as simple as that really! I mean, why should everybody else write albums like that and not us? I think we made a great job even on melodic moments on the album like “Conquistador” – a song which I believe would have fitted excellently in an album like “Denim And Leather” (1981). It has a great melody and a great riff and the guys blended the Mexican/Spanish influence into a Rock/Metal song which is a very hard thing to do.

I believe that for the  band’s successful musical evolution a lot of credit ought to be given to you as you have a great eye and ear when it comes to choosing bandmates. Nibbs (Carter: bass), for instance: what a great signing, if it is OK to  use a football term, was that back in 1988-89? I mean, he is an  uncontrollable force of energy!

Biff: That he is (laughs).

He brings an amazing  energy into the band and Doug, he is what I call ‘silent but deadly’. He is quite a humble person to meet but such a powerhouse on stage – exactly what this band needs!

Biff: Doug is a monster of a guitar player.

So what we have in the era 2013 is a band that is fresh and invigorated, which is able to compete with anyone and which, most importantly, always manage to sound like Saxon should.

Biff: Thanks for that. I think that Doug did a great job assimilating into this band. His first album with us really was “Unleash The Beast” and it is evident what he brought into the band. He brought a lot of top musicianship which is something that Paul (Quinn: guitars) was always responsible of supplying since the early days, with Graham Oliver (ex-guitarist and co-founding member) supplying the more ‘charismatic’ moments so to speak, burning guitars and basically taking his clothes off a lot. So, we kind of lost that Spinal Tap element a little bit when Graham left and Doug replaced him as a superb guitarist and eventually he also became a great song writer.

Earlier on you mentioned that you handled production duties for “Sacrifice”. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but was that not a job assigned to Andy Sneap?

Biff: No, we never intended to do that. Andy was actually busy so he couldn’t do the production but, you know, I was always going to produce this album myself – I just didn’t know who was going to mix it. The guy that mixes the last album (note: “Call To Arms”) was called Mike Plontikoff from Los Angeles who did a great job for us but I wanted this one to be more British…there isn’t such a thing as British-sounding but I wanted it to be ‘Gibsons and Marshalls’, you know what I mean? Now, because the Killswitch Engage album was delayed he got an opening so we already talked to some festivals in Czech Republic about working together and so I asked him (note: Andy Sneap) to mix it, basically.

So, he came down into the studio a couple of times to check on what we were doing and I told him my plan of making this album a little bit more organic-sounding and, yeah, he was into that. So it worked out pretty well; it was a great combination of things. My job was to take the album into a state that it would not be bogged down with too many choirs as it is in “Guardian Of The Tomb” with these huge keyboard parts…it is very easy these days to go too far with such tricks in your music so we made sure that we did not go down that road. We did not use many samples, only a few keyboard themes in the more atmospheric bits but generally this album is pretty much a representation of how Saxon play live, really.

To be honest with you  Biff, if I was the singer of a band like Saxon I would have made sure to stay as far away from the main console as possible – I would be scared to death of even attempting getting involved in the recording duties.

Biff: Well, the thing is that I have done this a lot as I have co-produced every album since…probably since “Dogs Of War” (1995) so I have a lot of experience in the studio and the rest of the members in the band do as well, you know. I think that…I felt as if this whole album had to be more connected to Saxon rather than being connected to somebody else’s idea of what Saxon are all about and I really wanted that to be clear.

I mean, we worked with Charlie Bauerfeind who has done some fantastic jobs for other Metal bands (note: Angra, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Rage) and I have co-produced many albums with him but he always comes up with that ‘slick sound’ which Charlie is known to bring – a perfectionist, Charlie, who is a fantastic person to work with.

This, however, is not what I wanted for this album especially as we made the album as we went along – nothing was really planned. I was playing bass guitar on a lot of the writing sessions and so I was not really able to do a lot of the vocal melodies and the lyrics until late into the process when Nibbs came, so everything was very spontaneously done. I had this idea, the chorus of “Warriors Of The Road” which I wrote down and which we kind of stuck in. It was all just done into the studio – a lot of it anyway.

 Old-school style?

Biff: Yes! We had some original ideas from Nibbs, Paul and Nigel (Glockler: drums) but also from myself as I did write one song but it is pretty much a team effort really when it came to putting the bits together. I suppose I was in charge of the arrangements so it was me who put in the twin guitar parts and thought, “we should bring back the twin guitars again”, as I felt that we lost a bit the twin guitars with all the Metal. I mean, sometimes you can be too Metal and lose something important.

The rhythm, for instance, becomes chromatic with no bent notes and it is very hard not to go down that road these days because it is considered modern not to bent notes. I wanted, however, to bring that back as twin guitar parts are part of the 80s sound and reminiscent of bands like Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy. I mean, Iron Maiden based their early career on twin guitars and they brought that stuff back on their latest album so yes, it is cool to have such guitar parts back in the fold again.

When recording these  ten new songs in the studio, which would you say was the one that gave you the most nightmares, so to speak?

Biff: Hmm… “Guardians Of The Tomb” is quite hard. We kept changing our minds. We had this stupid sort of synth-y thing in a pentatonic Chinese scale, you know, the oriental scale (note: at this point Biff recreates it for me in a rather amusing manner) which we really liked but it wouldn’t fit with anything (laughs).

I had the title “Guardians Of  The Tomb” and we knew that the song would be all about the Terracotta Warriors so we wanted the song to have an oriental feel. We had this oriental sequence that Nigel played on the Roland drum kit, an electronic drum kit that he has, and which we used to write the songs at my house in France. This theme sort of stuck with us and later on we changed it to real instruments…it was very difficult that song, to get in and out of the parts and to keep to an oriental flavour.

The promo disc we were given included some amazing acoustic versions of Saxon classics such as “Frozen Rainbow” and I was truly amazed how, after all these years being a fan of the band, I managed to discover a side of your musical character that I didn’t know existed.

On stage Saxon is the most dynamic band, so to have such songs performed in an acoustic setting is quite interesting indeed. I am surprised how you didn’t attempt something like that earlier on in your career.

Biff: Well, we wanted to be able to create something interesting to offer to our fans who plan on purchasing the album’s limited edition and I think that they will be pleased with what we have prepared for them.

Would you guys ever  consider doing an acoustic tour of sorts? You have never attempted such a thing so far in your long career but I, for one, would be more than happy to attend such a show.

Biff: Such a thing has not been discussed but I am not against the idea of doing a handful of special shows in an acoustic setting. Our guitarists, on the other hand, who love to play hard may have a few issues with that (laughs) but who knows – maybe I would be able to convince them.

Talking of shows, your website already advertises a very extensive tour which starts from the Caribbean and South America and finds you visiting some prestigious Summer Metal festivals, such as Graspop and Bang Your Head. Are you not tired of touring?

Biff: No we are not – we love playing live as this is really the right environment for Saxon. In addition to that, with record and CD sales reaching an all-time low, it is at live shows where the money is and if you want to be able to survive as a band you will need to be on the road as long as you possibly can. We are going to do a pretty extensive UK tour in April so check out the dates and come to see us play.

I am really looking  forward to the band’s London show, that’s for sure! Biff, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to meet you and to do this interview with you. I  am not going to wish you luck, as this will sound almost insulting to a band of your capabilities and experience. I only hope that you enjoy playing live for us and that you will continue to do so in the years to come.

Biff: (laughs) Thanks a lot. Check out our website (www.saxon747.com) for more information regarding the upcoming tour and a few more surprises which are under way.

The album Sacrifice is released via UDR on 4 March 2013

Album review: REBECCA PRONSKY – Only Daughter

Rebecca Pronsky - Only Daughter

Rebecca Pronsky is a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York whose previous outings have combined folk, jazz and country elements.  ‘Only Daughter’ signals a slight shift in direction with a more adventurous Americana crossover sound.

Produced by her husband and guitarist Richard Bennett, it’s an album that is ‘gritty and dark, layered and dreamy’.  But it’s Rebecca’s vocals that take centre stage and hold the listener like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

The Americana genre has been flooded with new artists in recent years, but ‘Only Daughter’ navigates a course that charts the mainstream in the same way the Fleetwood Mac were invigorated by the arrival of Buckingham and Nicks in the mid-1970s.  ‘Honesty’ is a number that would have sat comfortably on ‘Rumours’, and ‘Another’ is another song that guarantees country/folk infused soft rock will continue to thrive.

Elsewhere there’s a smorgasboard of styles from the ‘The Garden’ – a dark and broody slab of southern swamp rock to the ragtime style closer ‘Please Forget M’e.  And a word for Richard Bennett’s fret work, which throughout, is the perfect accompaniment.  Engaging.  ****

Album review: ACELSIA – Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow

Acelsia - Don't Go Where I Can't Follow

The debut from Norwegian three piece Acelsia, has a sound far bigger than its component parts.  With all songs written by vocalist / pianist Marlene Markussen and guitar, bass and synth player Odd Henning, and with Bjorn Tore Erlendsen (of Aspherium) behind the drum kit, they serve up a heady brew of female fronted melodic hard rock.

It’s hardly a unique formula, in truth never deviating hugely far from the Amy Lee / Cranberries template of arena friendly female fronted rock – quiet passages where the vocals take centre stage, supplemented by stirring melodies and crunching riffs.

It’s a winning recipe, and in vocalist Marlene Markussen they have a secret weapon – distinctive vocals are hard to come by, but hers – a youthful combination of Cyndi Lauper and Bjork, or perhaps, Avril Lavigne, are fairly unique and suit the genre to perfection.

Let’s face it, Amy Lee and co. don’t play locally very often, so why not enjoy homegrown talent?  Good luck to them, I say.  But it’s a massively competitive genre, so wider success abroad may be hard to achieve.  ***1/2

Album review: LARKIN POE & THOM HELL – The Sound Of The Ocean Sound

Larkin Poe & Thom Hell - The Sound Of The Ocean Sound

Edvins Records [Release date 04.03.13]

5 extended EPs and a live DVD over their two year career to date, and sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell have elected to share their first long playing outing with Norwegian songwriter Thom Hell.

The result – recorded over a 2 week period in Norway, and with Jamiroquai percussionist Sola Akingbola also contributing – is very much a collaborative effort with lead vocals being shared fairly evenly between Hell and the girls.  For the most part his warm vocals provide a neat counterpoint, although whether the demonstration of his falsetto on P.S. I Love You was really necessary is a moot point.

While previous Larkin Poe release have been fairly broad in successfully covering a number of genres, The Sound Of The Ocean Sound is staked firmly in a the easy listening folk/country arena with the distinctive Larkin Poe vocal harmonies and signature mandolin and dobro sound all present and correct.

But to these ears, the material just doesn’t leave an enduring mark in the way that previous releases have, and in particular there’s an absence of mainstream crossover appeal.  It’s pleasant enough, but in charting new territory The Sound Of The Ocean Sound may actually have diluted Larkin Poe’s wider appeal.  ***

Album review: ROBERT PALMER – Heavy Nova,Don’t Explain,Ridin’ High,Honey – Reissues

Robert Palmer - Heavy Nova/Don't Explain

Edsel Deluxe Editions [Release date 14.01.13]

Edsel Records have done a neat job with these 2 in 1 packages, brigading together Palmer’s 1988 – 1994 output in slip case outers, extensive artwork and bonus tracks.  But never mind the packaging, what about the music?

It has to be said, Palmer never really built on his mid-eighties success around the world with the classic Addicted To Love – a single that boasted one of the most iconic music videos ever.  Instead, he continued to flit between rock, reggae, and rat pack crooning in a way that wasn’t entirely comfortable for those other than his most ardent of fans.

The first album here – 1988′s Heavy Nova – is a classic example, containing the Simply Irresistible single that aped Addicted To Love and the Power Station style of straight ahead rock, married with the bossa nova, South African township roots and even yodelling (a reference to his resettling from Nassau to Switzerland).

It’s packaged partner, Don’t Explain saw him diversify even further, over the generous 18 tracks (now supplemented by a further 3 bonus tracks) marrying some excellent rock (Light-Years), with gospel blues, jazz, a cleverly segued cover of Marvin Gaye’s Mercy Mercy Me and I Want You, and recruiting UB40 for the reggae reworking of Dylan’s I’ll be Your Baby Tonight, both of which made the UK top 10.  ***1/2

1990 saw him release Ridin’ High – his ‘lounge’ album and voted Best Dressed male.  It predates Buble and Robbie’s dalliance with the swing / Tin Pan Alley sound and is really only going to appeal to fans of the genre.

It was album that, perhaps not unsurprisingly, marginalised his rock fans and signalled a general downturn in his popularity.

In contrast, 1994′s Honey saw him back exploring an eclectic mix of World music, funk, jazz, rock / pop and dance.  It spawned several singles that tickled the lower reaches of the charts, but Palmer’s wider popularity was, by then, well on the wane.  But once again the constant switching of styles is somewhat unsettling.  ***

So, nice packages, and if you’re looking to replace old vinyl, then what are you waiting for?  But those unfamiliar with the man’s works would do better to be well advised to listen before they leap.

Quick Plays: The Val,Juruda,Chris While & Julie Matthews,Carrie Rodriguez,Annabelle Chvostek

The Val - Back

The Val – Back

The Val, named after vocalist Gabrielle de Val, are a truly European band.  De Val herself, is German, but writes in English (although I wonder whether lyrics that refer to Humpty Dumpty and petticoats has perhaps lost something in the translation), while the rest of the band are Spanish and the collective are based in Madrid.

The band’s AOR melodic rock debut album has been out for over 12 months now in Europe and has found popularity in both Spain and Germany, and while it’s an easy, and pleasant listen, I suspect it may be considered a little too saccharine for mainstream UK or American rock audiences.

From the off there’s a clear modus operandi – piano or acoustic intros that transcend into ‘big hair’ AOR style rock ballads.  It’s a formula that’s served many very well and a genre I’ve got something of a soft spot for.  And certainly de Val can more than hold her own in the vocal department.  But the problem is that it’s all a bit clichéd – the opener A Kiss In A  Dragon Night bears more than a passing resemblance to Heart’s Alone and the set never really deviates far from that template.

Which is fine, but there’s a cloying veneer of Eurovision, and sadly it’s one that only serves to emphasises the only missing component – balls.  It’s a bit like comparing Marvel Comic superheroes with the Power Rangers.  But that said, if I heard this on Spanish radio while sunning myself on the Costa del Sol while enjoying a San Miguel, I’d be quietly impressed.  ***

Juruda Music – Whispers Of Doom

A rather Teutonic keyboard sound gives the second album from Dutch pop rockers Juruda Music a rather 1980′s synth feel in the much the same manner as, say Depeche Mode.  In contrast to Dave Gahan, Juruda Music have the lush, sensual vocals of Juruda that culminate in a sound that combines the darker, moodier elements of the likes of early Eurythmics, Blondie (In Store For Him has strong elements of both) and Berlin.

With over 20 years in the business, it’s a tight set that has an almost ‘experimental’ feel at times with some excellent guitar and keyboard work.  But for large parts it’s an album that washes around you without ever really grabbing you firmly by the private parts.  It could be that it’s a grower, but to my mind there’s an absence of deep enough hooks, or even a particularly stand out track, to make a lasting impact.  ***

Chris While & Julie Matthews

Chris While and Julie Matthews – Infinite Sky

New names to me, but not to those with a knowledge of the folk scene, Chris While and Julie Matthews paths first crossed in the Albion Band in the early 1990s, with a side project Women of Albion marking their first excursion as a due on 1997.

Since then, they’ve won Best Duo at the 2009 BBC Folk awards and been nominated nine times altogether since 2001.  Infinite Sky is their 8th studio album and what surprised me was just how close it sails to the mainstream.

Excellent vocalists and musicians, the album is steeped in the classic late sixties / early seventies sub rock folk culture that spawned the likes Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King and James Taylor, and even the Wilson sisters (when Ann Isn’t giving it ‘loads’).  OK, it might not be destined to break any record sales, but it’s a classy album of the sort that the likes of The Pierces will be releasing 20 years hence.  ***1/2

Annabelle Chvostek – Rise

One time Wailin’ Jenny singer songwriter Annabelle Chvostek’s latest folk / roots offering is packed with social commentary as evidenced by numbers like G20 and a cover of Peter Tosh’s Equal Rights.  But it also comes ‘fully loaded’ with some intelligent songwriting and great playing.

Yes, this is ‘music for the mind’ in the same way as much of Paul Simon’s post Garfunkel output; exploring planetary social justice through musical activism.  If that sounds a bit ‘heavy’, then relax, Rise works on a number of levels – lyrically, and as a soothing brew of Chvostek’s mandolin, fiddle and sultry vocals.

Quirky, intriguing, and enticing.  ***1/2

Carrie Rodriguez – Give Me All You Got

Carrie Rodriguez’s fifth solo album is largely a country affair.  But when the Texan fiddler, singer and songwriter strays into more mainstream territory, as she does on the infectious Devil In Mind, and Lake Harriet, you can see the potential for attracting a wider audience.
Steeped in American and recorded ‘live’ in the studio with her band, it’s Carrie’s sweet and sexy Southern drawl, combined with her fiddle playing that gives her the potential for crossover.  But for the most part Give Me All You’ve Got is going to appeal to country fans.  ***

Album review: 10cc – Tenology

10cc - Tenology

Universal/Mercury [Release date 19.11.12]

It’s about time 10cc’s excellent back catalogue got a decent airing.  Up to now all we’ve really had is a set of distinctly average re-masters.  That is, with the exception of the release of their classic Sheet Music album on Repertoire Records where the sound quality was second to none.

Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their formation, and just in time for Christmas, we’ve got the obligatory box set, wrapped in Storm Studios (Hipgnosis) packaging.  Unfortunately due to the Scrooge like nature of the record company we’re unable to pass comment on the artwork, the 100 page hardback booklet, or indeed, the dvd that includes promo videos, TV and live performances.

But what you’ll get if you invest is two cds that chronologically chart the band’s 32 singles issued between 1972 and 1992, although all the ‘best’ stuff is on disc one that covers Donna (1972) to People in Love (1977), and everything in between.  It’s a treasure trove – Rubber Bullets. The Dean And I, The Worst Band In The World, Wall Street Shuffle, Life Is A Minestrone, I’m Not In Love, The Things We Do For Love and many, many, more indispensables.

Disc 3 again focuses on that glorious 1973 to 1976 period, bringing together huge chunks of the album tracks that made up the balance of Sheet Music, The Original Soundtrack, and How Dare You as well as a clutch of the better tracks off Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists – the albums that followed the departure of Godley and Crème, while disc 4 is probably the least essential, but one that will appeal to anoraks – the single B-sides from 1972 – 1978.  But frankly, it’s little surprise none made it onto their long playing parents.

Some will argue that it would have been better to include the complete albums from Sheet Music through to How Dare You, but then you can’t keep everybody happy all of the time.  Certainly, there’s enough marvellous material here to put a smile on the face of even the most ardent of fans.

The good news is that the re-mastering is as good as we’ve heard so far.  But’s what unclear (without sight of the finished product credits) is whether Tenology has been sourced from the original master tapes.  I have my doubts, and if that’s the case, then given the studio perfectionism of Messrs Godley, Crème, Stewart and Gouldman, it’s overdue.  But in the meantime, Tenology is as good as it gets.  Timeless, and quite wonderful.  *****
