Gig review: GLENN HUGHES – Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

In Glenn Hughes’ distinguished and chequered career, his time in Deep Purple is a gift that keeps giving. Songs from his tenure with them have always formed a big part of his solo shows and indeed for many years (until Whitesnake’s controversial ‘The Purple Album’) that was the only opportunity to hear those Mark 3 and 4 songs interpreted by one of their creators.

Five years ago he then he undertook a ‘Classic Purple’ tour which I saw at this very venue: unfortunately a further tour fell victim to illness, and by the time we emerged from the pandemic he was back in a band camp with the Dead Daisies, not an obvious fit for either party.

Finally he has reverted to another Purple tour, billed as marking the 50th anniversary of the ‘Burn’ album, narrowly technically true I guess as while released in 1974, it was recorded the year before. Another packed house at the Electric Ballroom proved that the Purple name shifts more tickets than a purely solo show, even if hearing the likes of Trapeze and Black Country Communion over the PA was a reminder quite how much more he has achieved in that career.

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

First up was another welcome return visit to the venue for The Damn Truth, who I saw supporting King King over 18 months ago. The same ingredients were all present and correct: the powerhouse howl and winning smile of petite singer Lee-La Baum, a musical and fashion style inspired by the late sixties and early seventies glory years, and a dynamic stage show full of taut power and energy.

However as they opened with the anthemic ‘This Is Who We Are Now’ it was clear that their assurance and ability to own the stage had taken a step forward from that initial visit to the UK. Although Grace Slick is a natural comparison (not least as they come onstage to Jefferson Airplane) Lee-La’s soaring but clear vocals reminded me at times of Ann Wilson.
GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

On ’Lonely’ she got a crowd clapalong going, while ‘Only Love’ was more melodic and ‘Look Innocent’ was only the best example of the major contribution by the prominent bass lines of PY Letellier complementing some concise but aggressive riffs and solos from guitarist Tom Shemer, who I couldn’t help thinking had the looks of a young Marty Feldman crossed with a Hawkins brother from the Darkness.

By the time they ended with ‘Get With You’ and ‘Tomorrow’, an audience of Hughes and Purple fanatics that might have been hard to please responded very enthusiastically. Provided their songwriting develops and gains a more distinct identity of its own, I suspect this dynamic show will be a headlining one before too long.

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

Taking the stage to a psychedelic looking backdrop and an image of his seventies self, Glenn Hughes looked ever the rock star with his shades, luxuriant curly mane and a flamboyant velvet-like suit. He opened in fine style with ‘Stormbringer’ and though I thought I heard the odd flat note, I wrote it off to early sound problems and reassuringly that unique voice with its striking falsetto was on top form for the rest of the night.

There was a new musical accomplice in the ponytailed Bob Fridzema who opened with a few bursts on a miniature synthesiser, but the rest of the song was classic Purple, from the solo from longtime sideman Soren Andersen on a Stratocaster even Rory Gallagher would have rejected as being too battered, to a Hammond organ solo.

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

‘Might Just Take Your Life’ saw plenty of people punching the air to the chorus while there was another splendid Hammond solo from Bob. He has been a constant sight in the current blues rock scene as the go-to keyboard player but I’ve never seen him look as if he was enjoying himself quite as much as he was on this occasion, interpreting the work of the late great Jon Lord.

‘Sail Away’ saw Glenn on top form – and we mustn’t underestimate the ease with which he handled the ‘Coverdale’ vocals side by side with his own, aided by some good backing vocal support, while Bob dabbled at greater length on that synthesiser, adding to the comparisons with Stevie Wonder’s early 70s funk glory period.

It wasn’t just these songs that were being revived but the lost art of the jam, as the next three songs in the set extended to nearly an hour in total! ‘You Fool No One’ featured various solos including an extended one from drummer Ash Sheehan, a powerhouse full of manic energy with a big grin on his face, and an all too brief snatch of ‘High Ball Shooter’. ‘Mistreated’ saw Soren and Bob show off their bluesier chops and near the end Glenn’s falsetto screams were little short of breathtaking.

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

After a tribute to Tommy Bolin came that classic riff that kicks in ‘Getting Tighter’, the best proof that the funk-tinged ‘Come Taste The Band’ was an album before its time. Initially I was dismayed it went off into another jam but the sheer quality of the musicianship won me over – indeed this is surely the best of the many fine bands Glenn has assembled. As things belatedly became more concise and the jams were reined in, the main set finished in style with ‘You Keep On Moving’, possibly the finest moment of the Hughes-era Purple.

The first encore of ‘Highway Star’ did not feature the Joe Bonamassa guest appearance we were treated to last time, but a guest player on bass released Glenn to concentrate on singing the only song from outside his Purple era and a very good job he did too amidst the sterling musicianship you would expect to do the song justice. The inevitable finale had to be a slightly raw but equally storming version of ‘Burn’.

GLENN HUGHES- Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023

Though the jams and anecdotes had taken the set to nearly 2 hours and some way over curfew, no one could complain, especially as the generosity of spirit Glenn showed both in paying tribute to former and current bandmates and thanking the fans was quite touching.

Among his revelations were that this tour will continue for another year after which he promises to make a new album with this line up. After an evening which confirmed his status as one of rock’s most legendary survivors, those are both appetising prospects.

Album review: DORO – Conqueress – Forever Strong and Proud

DORO - Conqueress – Forever Strong and Proud

Nuclear Blast [Release date 27.10.23]

Doro Pesch is one of metal’s most consistent performers, both on stage and in the studio, having lost none of her vocal range and power, as opener ‘Children Of The Dawn’ ably illustrates.

The Queen of Metal gets to duet with the Metal God Rob Halford on two songs. The Judas Priest classic ‘Living After Midnight’ is a fun listen with plenty of metal vocals from both legends.

The other Halford guest spot is on the Bonnie Tyler classic ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ (penned by another legend of all things musically OTT, Jim Steinman). Possibly panto season coming early yet this is done with lots of enthusiasm and plenty of musical bombast. The other guest vocal comes Sammy Amara of the Broilers on ‘Bond Unending’, which has a modern feel, almost pop rock/punk!

As with most Doro album’s this reviewer did find a few clunkers like ‘Lean Mean Rock Machine’, although the guitars are the saving grace on this one. However, the metal class of ‘I Will Prevail’ and ‘Time For Justice’ keep the album’s standard high overall.

The expected ballad ‘Fels in der Brandung’ allows Doro to show the softer side of her singing. With the soaring strings, drums and choral backing it makes for an impressive listening experience. ‘Best In Me’ is the other ballad but somehow it doesn’t quite reach the same epic standards.

If the fifteen songs on the regular edition aren’t enough metal for you, the limited edition digibook adds five bonus songs including a cover of Metallica’s ‘The Four Horsemen’.

Doubtful if it will win Doro any new fans as she is as well known and respected in the metal world as she will get. However, her legion of fans will love this album and with the added bonus of Rob Halford, it makes for one the year’s better metal offerings. ***1/2

Gig review: SAMANTHA FISH & JESSE DAYTON – Junction, Cambridge, 25 October 2023

Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton

The fact that the Junction is wall to wall with people is testament to not just the rise of Samantha Fish but also how the revival of blues has never been stronger. With its blue-collar honesty and everyman appeal, this is music that crosses boundaries of gender, age and social standing, its themes universal.

Beyond the undeniable glamour that the singer/guitarist brings, it’s without doubt her playing that draws the most attention, her style a perfect blend of blues, rock and country and her voice with an irresistible Southern flavour. This time, Fish has teamed with Jesse Dayton, their ‘Death Wish Blues’ joint album a thing of molten beauty and the accompanying tour a chance to experience the two talents together.

The evening opened with Canadian rockers The Commoners bringing their own dose of high octane, chicken scratch Southern Soul. Embracing the opportunity of the tour and playing to packed rooms, the quintet were all out to impress, their infectious and gloriously rough edged material played with commitment and flair.

From the rattling boogie of ‘Shake You Off’, swaggering and harmony-filled ‘Devil Teasin’ Me’ and onto soaring closer ‘Find a Better Way’ it all slotted in perfectly, their warmth and impressive playing utterly compelling. With it impossible to not have a good time with them and critically acclaimed albums under their belt, this Toronto outfit are surely set for even bigger things.

Opening your set with MC5’s scorching proto punk ‘Kick Out the Jams’ is a big statement but Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton are all about shaking things up and the primal reaction to loud guitars.

Spiky single ‘Deathwish’ bristles even more in the live setting, a raging fire that charges along propelled by the dirty riff, the dual vocals of Fish and Dayton a perfect combination of sugar and spice. The set mixes originals and a finely chosen selection of covers given the pair’s blues rock magic, the two playing off each other to superb effect on numbers like Junior Parker’s kicking ‘Feels So Good’.

This isn’t all pedal to the metal stuff, the sublime soulful swing of Barbara Lewis’s ‘Hello Stranger’ a thing of jazzy beauty and ‘No Apology’ dripping with lush sensuality. With the duo’s aim of pushing the boundaries of the blues, the night certainly covered as many bases as possible, the many facets shining like diamonds in the hands of two master jewellers.

With the titanic cigar box blast of ‘Bulletproof’ that rattled the rafters and a wonderful acoustic cover of Townes Van Zandt’s ‘I’ll Be Here in the Morning’ perfectly displaying this range it was a night to satisfy everyone.

It’s a testament to Fish, Dayton and the band that the mammoth twenty-two song set never flagged, its constantly shifting nature always gripping and the musicianship nothing less than breath taking.

With an EP and album already completed, this tour emphasised just how well the partnership between the two musicians work and hopefully this won’t be the last time the two share both a stage and recording studio.

It could be argued that blues has been with us since time began and with Fish and Dayton breathing pulsating new life into it, there’s no reason to think it’ll die anytime soon. Thrilling and powerful, these two live and breathe blues and it’s a glorious thing to see.

Album review: THUNDERSTICK – Lockdown

THUNDERSTICK - Lockdown

Roulette [Release date 20.10.23]

Renowned Samson (and former Iron Maiden) drummer is not one to rest on his laurels, and since resurrecting his eponymous band in 2017, he’s kept rocking and entertaining. And this new album has kept the standards up.

While with Samson, Thunderstick became the theatrical face of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, and upon leaving, he released an excellent EP and LP (later reissued as Echoes Of The Analog Asylum on CD in 2011), and work again with Samson on and off; I first met Thunders at a Samson show at the London Astoria in 2000 (check out the live release), and there we have a wonderful guy with a story or two, and his imposing and at times scary performance help make a show as much as his drumming. Cage or no cage.

2017 saw the release of Something Wicked This Way Comes, followed by the excellent live Something Wicked This Way Came. Now 2023 sees Lockdown. The title would suggest work undertake during the lockdown, but equally applies to anyone in the asylum. And retaining bassist Rex Thunderbolt, the band now features guitarists Peter J Pinto and Dave Buffers, and replacing Vixen we have the wonderful (and beautiful) Raven Blackwing. Her vocals are, from the outset, solid, rich, powerful, and she can scream like she’s telling you who’s in charge.

The album opens with Cortege Of The Dark Princess, drumrolls reminiscent of Thunderburst. Then it’s into Torn ’n’ Twisted, a full on sonic assault. While the guitars could be a little higher in the mix, the emphasis is on the vocals and rhythm section. When the guitars do come through there’s some cracking riffs, great solo too, and the bassline rocks. Thunderstick himself shines throughout, and the operatic range of the vocals is stunning.

Snakebite and there’s a 70s bluesy influence to the metal, gives just a hint of sleaze (think a nod to Dogs D’Amour, Stones or Black Crowes turned up to 11), and again vocals that’ll straighten you out. I’m A Rockstar (In My Head) is musically a well thought star song, some interesting rhythms and guitar lines. Then Who The Devil Are You has a great and catchy groove. If this one doesn’t get you nodding, you’re still strapped to the wall in the asylum.

Warhead (the first of three songs running over 8 minutes, this one just shy of 10) has a very thoughtful feel. A gentler start, marching band style drumming. It does pick up, showing versatility in the vocals. Similarly the structure in writing and of the bassline in Snowfall In Space shows intelligence and intrigue. Then there’s Thunder Thunder 23, a real blast and a lovely contrast.

Dawn Of The Crystal Night (another eight minute track) features some good vocal layering, and the mid pace contrasts nicely some of the previous songs.

14 songs, 78 minutes, you get your money’s worth here. The whole band are to be praised, not just in performance, but song writing and structure. There is some great work here, and may this line-up release another album soon.

Classic rock is quality and lives on, here’s the proof. ****

Album review : VENOM – Live From The Hammersmith Odeon (CD/DVD Deluxe Digipak)

Cherry Red [Release date : 27.10.23]

Formed in England’s industrial North East in 1979, there was none heavier, none more extreme and indeed none more influential in the heavy metal genre than Venom.

The band’s reputation was born out of the brutality and intensity of their visceral sound, released from its cage on the debut album, Welcome To Hell, in 1981.

The volatility of the music’s punk/metal chemistry fast filtered out into the worlds of Metallica, Motorhead and others, simultaneously funnelling a thousand hardcore bands into the world of Death Metal and Thrash Metal.

Four albums on, the band, Abaddon, Cronos and Mantas lived out the musical nightmare of their anti establishment, anti mainstream message on stage at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1985.

It’s captured here on CD and DVD (in a Deluxe Digipak) by Cherry Red’s expert team of archivists , who might just have opened the gates to hell and let out the thrash and death metal hordes with this explosive setlist.

It’s drawn from the band’s 1981 debut, 1982’s Black Metal and 1985’s Possessed. Plus a handful of the early singles, most notably ‘Seven Gates Of Hell’ and ‘Warhead’.

‘Buried Alive’ and ‘Don’t Bury The Witch’ are key tracks. Guitar and bass fuse together in an inelegant chainsaw ballet. The drums sound like cardboard boxes, but really huge cardboard boxes, built to take a pummelling. It’s a primitive sound, but that’s the point.

In the live forum, these tightly structured songs, packed with electrifying dynamic shifts, (plus perhaps ‘Witching Hour’ and ‘Nightmare’), are perfectly pitched to spread the Death Metal Gospel.

Maybe the devil has all the best songs, after all. ****

Album review: PATTERN-SEEKING ANIMALS – Spooky Action At A Distance

PSA - Spooky Action at a Distance

InsideOut Music [Release date 27.10.23]

Fourth album from Pattern-Seeking Animals who comprise of multi-instrumentalist John Boegehold, Spock’s Beard duo Ted Leonard (vocals, guitars) and Dave Meros (bass, vocals), and former Spock’s Beard drummer Jimmy Keegan.

What makes Pattern-Seeking Animals rather special is that they do progress their music on each album. This time around we have the groove filled rhythm on ‘Window to the World’, with shades of the Police and the bass of Dave Meros taking a lead with wonderful results.

‘He Once Was’ is their epic track that starts out gently with a melodious vocal from Ted Leonard and plenty of musical delights, which reveal themselves on repeated plays. Do listen to this one, and indeed the whole album, on headphones and giving it your full attention as it is a fully immersive listen. Like the first time you hear Vangelis (there are plenty of synths and orchestrations to enjoy on this album) or Queensryche’s ‘Empire’, music that demands repeated listens.

They also know how to pen a catchy tune as ‘Bulletproof’ proves. You’ll be singing this one after just one listen. ‘Love Is Still the Light’ is the other instant ‘hit’ on the album. Loving the backing vocals arrangement on here.

The CD is worth getting as you get an extra live track recorded at last year’s ProgStock festival, namely ‘Time Has A Way’.

If you like prog and/or melodic rock, then Pattern-Seeking Animals will be perfect for your collection, unless you are already a fan in which case you will already be loving it. One of the finest bands around at the moment. ****

Album review: SKINNY KNOWLEDGE – Twenty Two

Skinny Knowledge - Twenty Two

Facebook [Release date 27.10.23]

Skinny Knowledge release ‘TwentyTwo’ as the notoriously tricky second album, following on from their debut in 2021 with ‘Don’t Turn Out the Lights’.

On producing Andy Smooth states, “The overall sound of the album has taken a slightly heavier turn, but nothing too drastic. The thing I’m excited about is that we’ve formed our own ‘sound’ now as the debut (‘Don’t Turn Out the Lights’) was all me and recorded during lockdown.”

This album is truly no follow on, this is an album that grabs you from the off and makes you listen up, no fillers on here, every track delivers with bigger hooks, heavier sound, fast pace and clever story telling lyrics that are delivered completely on point, with the bonus of complimentary harmonies from other members of the band, this album is packed full of talent – don’t take my word for it, give it a listen!

The Skinny Knowledge lads, “We’re super excited for everyone to hear ‘twentytwo.’ as it’s for all, for everyone to enjoy. If you’ve ever been through a break-up, had any hard, difficult times and are feeling lots of mixed emotions, there will definitely be something on this album for you!”

Guitars/bass and backing vocals come from Max Harris, Rab McGowan, mixed by Andy and Harrison Perks (Frank Turner, The Answer), additional engineering by Joe Burgess at The Ranch Production House and mastered by Grant Berry of Fader Mastering (Boston Manor, Cold Years).

‘Twenty Two’ has 11 tracks, some of which were co-written with Matt Bigland of Dinosaur Pile-Up. Andy opens up on some of the inspiration, “This is a journal of my life through 2022. I’ve always written songs that are honest, and come from real experiences, no fictional writing. Every word I sing is a true story, and real feelings that I’ve been through. This album is no exception.”

1.‘I Wanna (Rock N’ Roll)’, the sing-along opening upbeat track, Frontman and guitarist Andy L Smooth sets the scene, “It is what it says on the tin! Instead of sitting and dwelling, it’s about wanting to go out and party, let loose, and forget about it all – “I’m just here because I want to party, I’m just here because I’m broken-hearted”. It’s that simple!” The track sets the tone for the rest of the album with what I think is a fair reflection on no matter what hard times we’ve experienced, when it comes down to the heart of it, we just want to get over it and enjoy ourselves again!

2. ‘Disobey’ love this from the opening immense heavy bass line which is swiftly complimented by fast paced punchy vocals and call to arms.

3. ‘Strike Out!’ reiterating the rhetoric that we are all here for a good time. This is a very upbeat, high-energy track.

4. ‘Going up in Smoke’ I absolutely love the guitar structures of this, it really emphasises the lyrics and encapsulates all the angst in a relationship break up “I lit a fire for you and I…. I wish I could forget what you said”.

5. Devil Lives Within’ tackles the demons we all face when whilst we might envisage ourselves as heroes, we all have those devils sitting on our shoulders, whispering in our ears and encouraging us to be a little less good!

6. ‘Goes Around, Comes Around’ the perfect karma for any relationship breakdown.

7. ‘A Song about Lunch’ this is a tongue in cheek, joyful track, again the guitar structure and technicality of the delivery belies the subject matter.

8. ‘Home’ is all about taking those chances and opportunities, “put your life on the line things might be different this time” . This showcases Andy’s vocal range and the harmonies from Max and Rab take it to a different level. This is the absolute standout track of the album for me, and I loved them all!

9. Is the hard hitting and lyrically poignant, ‘Too Scared to Live’, you could be forgiven for thinking this is actually Green Day – the sound and vocals are so reminiscent of that band, and it just goes to show how accomplished Skinny Knowledge are. I love it.

10. ‘I Hate That I Miss You’ now there’s a title that anyone who’s had their heart broken can relate to! This song is poignant and from the heart, again the harmonies totally lift it to a new level – superb.

11. I was pleased to see Heavy Metal Inter2de included – suspect this may become the signature way to close off an album. A pure masterclass that showcases the skills of the band.

To be clear, the ball of energy that has been unleashed on my ears and the stomping pace is just as palatable if you see them live, make no mistake, you will be in one for hell of a night!

This album may seem to some a rather cathartic outpouring, but it is personal and a highly impactful insight into changing circumstances, what truly stands out is the absolute high quality of this band and indeed how representative they are of the newer regeneration of rock bands, all of which are clamouring for the attention they so richly deserve. I hope Skinny Knowledge’s latest album gets all the air play and media attention it should – this is absolute class!

Five stars – album of the year contender.  *****

Album review: BERNIE TORME – Lightning Strikes 1982-83 (4 CD boxset)

BernieTorme

Cherry Red [Release date: 27.10.23]

Four CD Boxset of some of Irish guitar wunderkind, Bernie Torme’s best stuff, remastered:

Turn Out The Lights (1982)
Electric Gypsies (1982)
Live 1983
Live In Sheffield (1983)

When Torme decamped to London, in 1974, aged 21, he quickly discovered that it’s what goes on “behind the camera” rather than in front that dictates success or failure in rock’n’roll.

He emerged from the seventies punk scene with shorter hair than he went in, but with a renewed desire to nail down the hard rock sound that had energised him in his youth.

Talent spotted by Ian Gillan, Torme joined Gillan, the band, in 1979 and enjoyed the fame (but not the fortune) that goes with 4 best selling albums.

Pissed off at his slice of the financial cake, Torme jumped ship and dallied briefly with, in turn, Ozzy, Atomic Rooster and Dee Snider.

None of these relationships lasted. In 1980, Torme formed his own band and went on to release two studio albums, Turn Out The Lights (1981) and Electric Gypsies (1982).

Cherry Red Label has repackaged these as cutting edge remasters, with a dozen bonus tracks between them.

Torme’s love of quality sixties pop shows its face with covers of the Creation’s fabulous art/rock song, ‘Painter Man’ and The (Wild Thing) Troggs’ ‘I Can’t Control Myself’, a song banned on US Radio for its “blatantly suggestive lyrics”.

That said, his own material predominates in both albums. Look no further than ‘Lightning Strikes’ and ‘New World’ to hear Torme’s bluesy squalls burning down the house.

It’s a sound we can hear too in the raw, down to the bone axework on the live bonus tracks, esp ‘Search & Destroy’ and ‘Star’.

One of the reasons Torme gave for quitting Gillan (apart from the money) was the lack of opportunity to improvise during the live gigs.

He took maximum opportunity on tour to right that wrong. The two live albums, Live 1983 and Live In Sheffield (1983) are jampacked with Torme’s controlled guitar freewheeling, as he wrings out  maximum mileage from every melody, every riff, and every axe solo.

Naturally, the bulk of the setlists are taken from the studio albums. The comparison in treatments, track on track, are a joy to behold. In the studio or on stage with classy musicians, like Phil Spalding and Everton Williams, Torme knew when to damp down the guitar histrionics and when to catch fire.

He died of Double Pneumonia in 2019, and is sadly missed.

RIP Bernie. ****

Album review: GYPSY PISTOLEROS – Duende A Go Go….Loco

Gypsy Pistoleros – Duende A Go Go….Loco

Earache Records [Release date 03.11.23]

Gypsy Pistoleros are a 4-piece, hailing from Worcester, that have exploded as a ball of energy onto the Rock scene, bringing Flamenco Punk Glam Rock n Roll to the masses. They are now serving up their latest offering in the form of their new album ‘Duende a Go Go Loco!’ which shows an edgier, heavier side of Gypsy Pistoleros, whilst retaining the Flamenco heartbeat, passion and gritty glam punk rock ‘n’ roll.

The Gypsy Pistoleros have always had a reputation for playing live and have toured extensively over the years, with serious rock pedigree they have appeared alongside Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Poison, ZZ Top, Twisted Sister, Faster Pussycat, Vain, Papa Roach, Whitesnake, Skid Row, Black Label Society.

So with this sort of backstory and reputation what is the album going to deliver? In an nutshell, the songs span styles and decades in the best rock ‘n’ roll tradition with big hooks, attitude, and sleaze. This album will liven up your listening pleasure no end!

Track Review:

1 Duende A Go Go Loco! The impact of the opening track is instantaneous and electric

2 I Got it all – I think this band have – presence, energy, great lyrics and delivery

3 Revolution – this is more than a band, this is a call for a revolution and much needed it is too; shaking up the music world and challenging the status quo.

4 What’s it like to be a Girl? 1970’s inspired glam rock at its very finest!

5 The Ballad of Tommy Shelby For all those Peaky Blinder’s fans, this is a fabulous ode to all the good, the bad and the beautiful, with an obligatory sway and raise your arms section, this is perfect!

6 Like Tears in the Rain – the reinvention of the Blade Runner song is sublime, absolute belter, I LOVE IT!

7 Thrill Kill Killer Club – high energy, high pace, how do they do it?

8 Maybe Tomorrow – I love the heavy rhythm section on this and the harmonies are off the scale.

9 I’ll Remember You – the lead guitar on this is fantastic and the poignancy resonates.

10 Come on Eileen – well lets end and show the less brave out there how to finish an album off… yep it’s a cover of the classic Dexys Midnight Runners track, what a rapturous rendition, takes you straight back to the 1980’s, whilst it captures the essence of that time, it has an invariable Gypsy’s twist and stylish reinvention that really works.

The album has been recorded, mixed and produced by Dave Draper (The Wildhearts, Nickelback, Kerbdog, Terrorvision, The Professionals) at The Old Cider Press Studios, Pershore.

Stand out tracks: This was tough as I loved the whole album but for sheer variety, the title track ‘Duende A Go Go Loco’, ‘Revolution’, ‘What’s it like to be a Girl?’, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ and personal absolute favourite ‘Like Tears in the Rain’.

So they self-decree that the GYPSY PISTOLEROS are “The World’s Greatest Flamenco Punk Glam Rock band Ever!” and do you know what, I think they are right! Gypsy Pistoleros are unique, completely unique.

Never have I heard such a blend of styles merge so successfully that you’d struggle to label it (don’t bother trying) but the album is absolute killer, high energy, high octane, pedal to the metal all the way. You’re in for one hell of a ride and an absolute blast. An album to lift your spirits and heart rate – give it a spin, there’s nothing out there that resembles this band, it’s the way to go, go!

Having had the privilege of seeing the Gypsy Pistoleros live a few times, that energy is matched by larger-than-life personality and a party you’ll be talking about way after the set has ended – catch them on the road soon too. *****

Gig review: DOM MARTIN – Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

DOM MARTIN- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

Any blues rock guitarist emerging from Ireland will face invariable and daunting comparisons with the very best in Rory Gallagher (and that’s before we even get started on Gary Moore). One such, Dom Martin, has been receiving rave reviews and a perfect place to see him for the first time was at one of my regular local haunts, the Eel Pie Club at Twickenham.

While the long running club naturally plays tribute to those with musical links to the pioneering Eel Pie Island scene of the sixties, encouragingly in recent years they are booking an increasing number of the rising blues talent including Connor Selby, the Cinelli Brothers and now the Belfast-based artist. The house was packed with a mixture of his own fans and curious club regulars, making it difficult at times to see the stage, where the usual club backdrop was replaced by Dom’s own Celtic themed logo.

DOM MARTIN- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

After an engaging acoustic set from Alex Lleo who was a late stand in, Dom Martin also initially took the stage with just an acoustic guitar, albeit fully amped. Sporting saturnine good looks, and showing a quirky and laconic sense of humour as he bantered with audience members, he opened with the instrumental ‘Hello In There’ segueing into ‘The Fall’. The guitar work was intricate and delicate while his dark gravelly voice reminded me a little of Chris Rea. ‘Government’ meantime revived the art of the protest folk song with lyrics such as ‘you make me stick to my stomach’.

After bringing on two able bandmates in bassist Ben Graham and drummer Aaron McLoughlin, he successfully tackled those inevitable Gallagher comparisons head on with a blistering version of ‘Messing With The Kid’, though some jamming in which he and the band regularly took the pace down and back up again stretched the song well over 10 minutes.

DOM MARTIN- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

The night though was primarily a showcase for his new album ‘Buried In The Hail’ and the title track offered a different take on the blues, dark and with a Vedder-esque deep growl in his vocal delivery. ‘Daylight I Will Find’ and ‘Belfast Blues’ were more conventional but equally enjoyable, notably in some aggressive slide guitar playing.

The film noir-style darkness in his writing showed on  ‘Lefty 2 Guns’ which turned into a nine minute epic complete with some very twangy sounding guitar while ‘Howling’ began with some very CCR- like riffing but it provided the foundation for Dom to go into a  lengthy solo with particularly solid bass support from Ben.

DOM MARTIN- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

After more retro style blues rock in ‘Unhinged’, a main set that had flown by ended with a cover, not one of the usual suspects but ‘Crazy’ popularised by Patsy Cline, though as Dom emphasised a Willie Nelson song. By the end he had put his own musical stamp on it.

There was one encore which was ‘Maxwell Shuffle’, an instrumental which turned into a lengthy medley of other songs with only the occasional lyrics. His speed and fluency were impressive, though arguably covering the same crowded ground as a number of contemporaries and therefore not as interesting as some of those darker and more individual earlier songs.

DOM MARTIN- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 19 October 2023

Nevertheless my first impression was still of a compelling performer and a very significant talent who can rise above those inevitable comparisons and who I look forward to hearing much more from in future.

News: SAXON are the latest entrants in The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness (November 2023)

Saxon - Nottingham Rock City, 20 April 2013

Heavy metallers Saxon are the latest entrants to “The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness” a year long promotion to tie in with rock website Get Ready to ROCK!’s 20th anniversary.

The band’s more recent ascendancy parallels the lifetime of the classic rock website Get Ready to ROCK!

Each month the website has selected an artist or band who have received regular coverage and who have shown consistency and quality over two decades.

As News and Reviews Editor Jason Ritchie says: “Once again the choice of Saxon reflects the band’s popularity amongst our review team.  Time and time again the band are praised for their consistently good live shows when they are not averse to featuring a lot of  new material along with their classics.

Saxon formed in 1979 and by 2003, when the Get Ready to ROCK! website was officially launched, they were coming out of a chequered period  with a new line-up and a resolved legal battle over the use of the band name.

Their exposure on a reality TV show in 2007 led to renewed interest and chart success but the momentum was already building as they were frequently playing some of the major European festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Sweden Rock.

Long time fan and band advocate Joe Geesin adds: ”During the millennium the band have embraced their new-found power metal heaviness with the band’s roots, and in places symphonic, blues, rock’n’roll and prog metal. Then we get to their most recent album Carpe Diem (the covers albums aside), which is by far their heaviest yet.”

Joe is a major contributor to the band retrospective to be published on 1 November.  This will also reflect the large number of reissues during the period, along with well received studio and live albums.

Jason continues: “We have just one artist to announce in this promotion (for December) but throughout the year the selected artists very much represent the popularity amongst our review team in general or their championing by specific reviewers.”

EDITOR NOTE

The equivalent of the “Hall of Fame” the Grotto honours selected artists who have been covered consistently at rock website Get Ready to ROCK! over a period of 20 years. The promotion is part of the website’s 20th anniversary celebrations and will feature a different artist or band each month in 2023.

The GRTR!@20 promotion celebrates 20 years of the popular rock website Get Ready to ROCK! The website’s archive of reviews and interviews will be highlighted as well as new features celebrating 20 years of activity.

So far this year “The Grotto” has welcomed The Darkness (January), Chantel McGregor (February) , Eleanor McEvoy (March), Joe Bonamassa (April), Walter Trout (May), FM (June 2023), Marillion (July 2023),  Cats In Space (August 2023), Steve Hackett (September 2023), Thunder (October 2023).

Gig review: EUROPE – Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, 18 October 2023

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

I recently interviewed Tommy Johannson of the Swedish band Sabaton. As an aside at the end of the interview I asked him, given the band’s love of all things historic, if he could go back to any point in time when would it be and why? Without hesitation he replied “to the early 80′s so I could write The Final Countdown before Joey Tempest!”

Given the success of that song and the fact that it made Europe a household name in Europe and far beyond, many people are unaware of the rest of the band’s back catalogue or the fact that it has been 40 years since the release of their first album. However, those in the know were out in force in Glasgow to celebrate Europe reaching a career milestone with a set chock full of classics and deeper cuts.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

The evening kicked off with a five minute video introduction from the band taking us through their early days as Force, before Joey announced the name change to Europe, a change that was not universally well received by the band at the time, but after a few more beers were had, all was good and the name stayed.

Things got off to a rocking start with ‘On Broken Wings’ before we were transported back the full 40 years for the excellent ‘ Seven Doors Hotel’. Joey was in great voice and had a wide smile firmly plastered across his face throughout the set, he looked in his element as he led the Glasgow crowd on the ‘woo-oh-woo’ parts mid-song.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

Things really got going though when John Norum played the opening riff to ‘Rock The Night’ which made an early appearance in the set and got the audience on their feet. As crowd pleasers go, they don’t get much better and again the everyone was in full voice throughout.

The setlist for the evening brought in all eras of the band’s career and ‘Start From The Dark’ kept things rocking along nicely with its quite wonderful down-tuned groove.

The stage set was fairly sparse, barring the drum and keyboard rise, but the lightshow more than made up for any shortcomings and was used to great effect. A taped intro then lead into the majestic ‘Walk The Earth’ before new single ‘Hold Your Head Up’ brought things bang up to date.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

Mic Michaeli then led Joey in a piano based version of ‘Dreamer’ which brought the pace down momentarily, before ‘War Of Kings’ reminded everyone how hard Europe can rock when they are in full on attack mode!

John Norum took the spotlight for the instrumental ‘Vasastan’, which showed off his fretboard dexterity perfectly, perhaps channeling the spirit of Gary Moore. I never feel that Norum gets the credit he deserves as a guitarist, again because of people’s misunderstanding of Europe’s rock credentials. Having ‘that’ song in your repertoire can be a blessing and a curse!

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

‘Varastan’ led into ‘Girl From Lebanon’ before another of the night’s big numbers ‘Carrie’ had arms swaying and voices raised once more. The first half ended with a return to the early days as the guys launched into ‘Stormwind’, much to the delight of two girls in front of me who were word perfect throughout. Ian Haugland popped up to say they would be back soon and everyone headed to the bar to recharge for round two.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

The second half again kicked off with a short intro video, this time picking up on the band’s return to the stage in Sweden in 2004 after their 13 year break. ‘Always The Pretenders’ followed which then ran into a fast and furious version of ‘Ninja’.

Joey donned an electric guitar for the epic ‘Prisoners In Paradise’ which went down a storm. A blast through ‘Sign Of The Times’ was followed by Joey and John playing an immaculate acoustic version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ as they had done right back in the early days when they first got together.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

We were soon back in full on rock mode with a very heavy and brilliantly orchestrated version of ‘Last Look At Eden’ and a bit of pop rock pomp with ‘Open Your Heart’. We then returned to the very first album with ‘Memories’ which gave bassist John Leven a chance to chat and show off his bass skills and gave, Ian Haugland a real workout behind the kit.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

Mr Haugland was to get another workout soon after when following ‘More Than Meets The Eye, he took to the mic to ask if the crowd liked a drum solo. After a unanimous ‘yes’ vote, he stated he didn’t and rattled into something completely different, his interpretation of the ‘William Tell Overture’, it was certainly different!

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

‘Ready Or Not’ got things back on track before one of my set highlights ‘Superstitious’ made a welcome appearance. During the mid section of ‘Superstitious’ the band went into Whitesnake’s ‘Here I Go Again’ with the crowd on vocals which was a magical moment and a perfect way to round off the main set.

EUROPE - The Lowry, Manchester, 22 October 2023

The guys were soon back though with ‘Cherokee’ before the keyboard intro to ‘The Final Countdown’ almost brought the house down. The crowd bounced and sang their way though the track with whatever energy reserves they had left and it proved to be the crowning glory of an excellent night.

Europe proved once more why they have had such a long and successful career. This set had something for everyone from the casual listener who only knows the hits, to the die hard fans that have been with the band for the last 40 odd years.

Not sure the band have another 40 years in them, but hopefully they will continue to Rock The Night for many years to come and, at very least, for their 50th anniversary!

Album review : ROBBY VALENTINE – Embrace The Unknown

Independent [Release date : 21.10.23]

Robby Valentine’s new release, Embrace The Unknown, is his 13th studio album.

Something of enigma, he’s worked with Kristoffer (Pain of Salvation) Gildenlow, Jeff Scott Soto, and Arjen (Ayreon) Lucassen, to name but three, and has released several very well received Queen tribute albums. He’s Big In Japan, and yet he’s relatively unknown in the UK.

Embrace The unknown might just change that. Several of the songs add to the growing number of voices speaking out against what they perceive as government “expansive rulemaking” and “control of the narrative”.

These “protests” may not suit all his fans, but you can enjoy his music without supporting his political views.

Let’s get to the “protest songs” first.

‘Break The Chain’ is obviously a child of the Pandemic. Valentine takes aim and fires a fusillade of broadsides at “Government (lockdown) Control”.

‘Never Fall In Line’ sets his sights on Big Pharma and the Corona virus vaccine, “the power of the lie”. It’s hard hitting stuff, and Valentine pulls no punches. His vocal melancholy, brooding, pulsing, provides the angst that fuels the song’s message.
Message aside, it’s a huge slice of high pitched operatic rock, punchy, powerful, guided by Valentine’s spine tingling orchestration.

Then there’s the others stuff. ‘Don’t Give Up On A Miracle’ creates a bit of background messaging. It’s a humorous tale that cruises along in a bouncy little groove. As an alternative, he uses an element of dark humour to relieve the seriousness of his album’s “protest” messaging with one of his music hall ditties, ‘Life Is A Lesson’.

There’s some very personal stuff here too. Feelings run deep on the epic ‘Friend’, “all these times that I thought you were on my side”. And ‘Show The Way’, a heart rendingly sincere “believe in yourself” ballad.

We’ve come to expect at least a couple of huge production numbers from Valentine and he doesn’t disappoint us.

The medium is the message with ‘Take It To The Light’, a fabulous, symphonically inclined melodic pop number, like Jellyfish had stumbled into a Queen soundalike contest. And won.

The album’s title track is the magnificently apposite closer. A dramatic insight into the man’s growing blindness, “clouds obscure my sun”. It climaxes appropriately in a crescendo of celestial choirs.

Clearly, despite his health problems, Valentine is alive and well, and firing on all six. ****

Album/EP Review: HELD BY TREES – Eventide

HELD BY TREES - EVENTIDE  HELD BY TREES - EVENTIDE/SOLACE

Sound Canyon Records  [Release date: 11.08.23]

Following on from Held By Trees’ excellent ‘Solace’ in 2022, the band assembled once more at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios to realise two projects.

The first was a sparkling, live re-recording of ‘Solace’ which I recently reviewed and compared favourably to the original, remarking that the remake had a real ‘bite’ about it that lifted it above the original by its sheer immediacy engendered by the live setting.

The second is ‘Eventide’ – a new suite of five pieces themed on the transition from daylight to darkness.

‘Eventide’ was recorded live in the studio, but my shoulders slumped a little when I read that additional layers were added by other musicians in America and Canada – apparently old friends of project leader David Joseph.

The question must be asked – why?

Hard to believe they weren’t confident enough in their own abilities given how good the live version of ‘Solace’ is, and, as a result, they’ve sort of crept back into their shell, which is a pity.

Don’t get me wrong, ‘Eventide’ is still a beautiful collection of songs – entirely instrumental – which paint aural pictures suggestive of many aspects of the passage of a day.

From the almost Hawaiian at times ‘Pure Sunlight’ creating an image of a deserted beach on a summer’s day (if such a thing exists) to closer ‘Grow Dark’ – sounding exactly as you would  expect a song about twilight to sound, with mournful sax and nicely picked electric guitar – the songs wrap the listener in a cocoon of cotton wool.

However, the band appear to have switched back into ‘safe mode’ again and, despite the quality of the songs, find themselves occasionally lapsing into ‘lounge jazz’ territory.

This is a shame, because it’s all beautifully played, sounds great on headphones, and nobody expected a clutch of party bangers – but it’s probably best suited to mood music for TV documentaries about dolphins.

‘Eventide’ is issued as an EP as it only clocks in at a tad over 22 minutes, but the vinyl release is an LP which includes three tracks from ‘Solace: Live’ – ‘In The Trees’, ‘The Tree Of Life’ and ‘The New Earth’.

If you compare the three live tracks with the rest you’ll get my drift.    ***1/2

Gig review: THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

This show had a lovely sense of symmetry for me. Just over five years ago my first sighting of Those Damn Crows was here at the Forum, opening a four band bill headlined by the Quireboys. I remember being struck by how loyal a following a new band had swiftly picked up, and five years on they have grown to the extent that they returned as headliners on their tour of biggest venues yet, riding high on a top 3 album earlier this year in ‘Inhale/Exhale’.

There is something heartwarming in being present when a homegrown band that has built their name the hard way progresses to headline a prestigious 2000-plus capacity venue such as this, and there was a healthy crowd, though pleasantly full rather than jam packed.

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

Support came from The Cruel Knives, including former Heavens Basement guitarist Sid Glover, who I was surprised to find out have been around for quite a few years. Some rather  industrial sounding taped beats heralded opener ‘The Life That We Made’ with lively singer Tom Harris swiftly discarding the jacket of his dapper striped suit. They certainly didn’t lack in confidence, breaking down second number ‘Overdose’ mid-song to a near standstill, and regularly getting the audience to clap along.

‘If This Is the End’ (I’ve Been a Fool From the Start)’ was easily my favourite song. Others including the current single ‘All Your Heroes Hate You’ didn’t make the same impact on me, purely as they were a little alternative for my tastes. (In fairness, I originally felt the same way about Those Damn Crows all those years ago!) Nevertheless I was impressed with their stage presence and ability to get the audience involved which is a good omen.

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

Those Damn Crows came on with their biggest stage set yet, but opened in relatively familiar fashion with a tasty bass intro from Lloyd Wood heralding ‘Who Did It’, plenty of fists  punching to the chorus, before ‘Man On Fire’ was the first but not the last example of how the new songs have been stripped down in simpler fashion, yet sound huge.

After ‘Send the Reaper’ Shane Greenhall mentioned this was the ‘Takedown’ tour before playing the eponymous song, and that they would feature the new album heavily. It was one of unusually few pieces of chat from the charismatic singer, but he was still prowling the stage in complete command.

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

One short and punchy anthem after another flew by – ‘I Am’ and ‘Find a Way’ with its ‘who-oahs’, the pace rendered even quicker as the well-drilled guitar pair David Winchurch and Ian ‘Shiner’ Thomas avoid solos of any significance. Indeed after a brief return to their grungier and more alternative origins on the verses to ‘Wake Up’, the chorus still had big commercial hooks and ‘Lay It All On Me’ was another arena worthy song though concluding the new songs, for now, ‘Waiting For Me’ felt less cohesive than the other songs.

Returning to old favourites, ‘Blink Of An Eye’ has always had an epic feel to it, but this arrangement was stadium-worthy with Shane taking to piano for some almost Journey- esque melancholic melodies, allied to power chords and even a rare snatch of harmony guitar.

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

The big chorus hooks of ‘Go Get It’ warmed up a crowd who were fairly bouncing to ‘Sin On Skin’, then almost from its first chord a chant of ‘who says rock and roll is dead’ rang out to their anthem ‘Rock and Roll Ain’t Dead’, as Shane (of whom I once heard it said ‘this man loves a balcony’) went on one of his trademark sorties into the seated ranks of the vertiginous upper tier.

THOSE DAMN CROWS- The Forum, London, 17 October 2023

Once upon a time that would have been the end of the set but the effect of the new album is that the Welshmen have a whole host of further crowd pleasing anthems to draw on. ‘This Time I’m Ready’, which took on a power ballad feel as Shane switched between keyboard and guitar, posing line astern with the other guitarists, and ‘See You Again’, with the ‘oh-oh-oh’s ringing around the crowd and a little of the widescreen sound of U2, both showed a great understanding of the dynamics of a large-scale presentation.

Indeed not only did this show prove they can successfully step up, but even this larger venue was not enough to hold in a massive sound: it was almost at times a dry run for shows at the arena level. The rise of Those Damn Crows seems unstoppable at the moment.

Album review: DISTRICT 97 – Stay For The Ending

DISTRICT 97 - Stay For The Ending

Spirit Of Unicorn Music/Cherry Red [Release date 20.10.23]

Now here’s something a little different. A prog metal band fronted by a female vocalist, an American Idol finalist to boot! I have been aware of District 97, not least when they collaborated with the late John Wetton, but in Leslie Hunt they have their USP.

This album is sophisticated fusion, whether it be jazz rock, prog or metal. The opener, and title track, is a case in point.

District 97 modus operandi aligns them with bands such as Dream Theater but also those with a jazzier hue such as King Crimson. It seems that the latest offering consolidates the promise the band have shown since their debut in 2010.

There’s meaty guitar (Jim Tashjian), buzzing synth (Andrew Lawrence) and intricate rhythm, perhaps not surprising as the main writer is drummer (and co-founder) Tim Seisser.

Hunt’s vocal melodies are excellent (occasionally in duet with Tashjian) and an earlier comparison might be Sonja Kristina coping admirably with the bombast that was Curved Air.

The album pivots on ‘Life Cycle’ which reminds a little of Jeff Beck’s ‘Diamond Dust’ in its quieter passages.  The filmic ‘X’ morphs into ‘X-Faded’ which is closest the band get to a radio-friendly tune and even then it’s a bit too extreme for daytime. Half a star gets docked for a drum solo in ‘Deck Is Stacked’.

Whilst in the main this music is cerebral it is more creative than most in the genre and Hunt’s vocals provide the real intrigue.  ***1/2

Album review: UNIFONY – Unifony III

UNIFONY - Unifony III

Volkoren [Release date 03.11.23]

The great thing about GRTR! is our eclecticism over 20 years, very much reflecting the taste and preferences of our solid review team. We’re not bound by classic rock but the music has to move us.

And as if to illustrate this, it gives us great pleasure to review an album like ‘Unifony III’. It features prominently Moya Brennan (Clannad) on harp and ambient vocals adding an ethereal quality.

If you’ve ever listened to the likes of saxophonist Jan Gabarek there is a cool Nordic vibe permeating these grooves. I always thought it was something to do with the lack of daylight but the link is also to one-time Gabarek labelmate, and fellow countryman, trumpeter Nils Petier Moivaer.

The main movers and shakers are Minco Eggersman and Theodoor Borger who established the Unifony project in 2016 with the albums recorded organically using Borger’s vintage and high-end studio gear.  It’s all beautifully realised.

This is essentially jazz noir far more accessible than the average ECM release and Brennan’s contribution makes it something special along with the fluttering guitar and piano figures.

File this with Held By Trees and it’s perhaps no coincidence that the album artist James Marsh designed all the Talk Talk album covers.

Music for a darkened room. *****

Album review: STEVIE JONES AND THE WILDFIRES – Clarity In Dusk

STEVIE JONES AND THE WILDFIRES - Clarity In The Dusk

Wildfire Sessions Productions www.steviejones.com [Release date 13.10.23]

This album was born out of solitary walks late in the day in the local countryside during Lockdown. That locality includes Helpston in East Northants where the artist Stevie Jones is a regular on the local music scene.

Lockdown has produced some good stuff in terms of music as the world became more introspective. And ‘Clarity In Dusk’ is no exception.

This is a lovely album, with strong songwriting throughout (and great playing). The vibe is soft rock/alt-folk/Americana.  There’s a nice dose of melancholy and reflection but it’s also uplifting too.

The only thing lacking is a lyric sheet (although available on the website) for thoughtful tunesmithery which covers a range of topics from the romantic (the excellent ‘Violet Lane’ and early single ‘Carmen’) to personal improvement (‘Do Or Die’), the environment (‘False Gods’), and the title track’s seeking solace in nature. Elsewhere the jaunty ‘Come In From The Rain’ is a real standout.

Four tracks appeared on Jones’ solo effort during Lockdown, a mini-album called ‘Come In From The Rain’.

The album – the Wildfires’ third – reminds me of the sort of quality songwriting and musicianship you find on albums by artists like Mike Grogan, Paul Menel, or Mike Armstrong who all sadly sit outside the mainstream. It must be very frustrating.

This is a compulsive and really good listen. ****1/2

Album review: HELD BY TREES – Solace – Live At Real World Studios

HELD BY TREES - SOLACE LIVE AT REAL WORLD STUDIOS

Sound Canyon Records [Release date: 11.0.23]

Held By Trees is a collective of outstanding musicians, three of whom had connections to and played with the band Talk Talk.

Back in the day, Talk Talk, under the eclectic leadership of the sadly late Mark Hollis, released a number of rather fine, if somewhat diverse albums in the ‘80s and early 90’s.

Re-assembling in 2022, Held By Trees produced the excellent ‘Solace’, featuring ace session guitarists Robbie McIntosh and Tim Renwick plus guest pop-up contributions from talents such as the wonderful Eric Bibb and David Knopfler.

David Randall, in his usual inimitable style, described it in his review as “reflective and absorbing music” and made the observation that “nothing moves too quickly in this world”.

I thought the album was excellent too but with the caveat (that many instrumental albums carry) that it was all just a bit ‘safe’ – alright if you’re having a seaweed wrap on a spa-break, but nothing to set the pulses racing.

However, under project leader David Joseph (a great guitar player in his own right by the way), HBT have re-re-convened and recorded live versions of five of the finest tracks from the original album.

Now this is more like it.

It’s still a beautiful album, but the live sound has injected just the right amount of ‘bite’ to the proceedings, with the guitars being far more up-front and the whole shebang feeling much more like the band are pouring their heart and soul into it.

Dave’s review tells you all you need to know so no need for duplication – but, from my perspective, the live re-make is the better of the two, although you do miss out on three very good tracks from the original – ‘Next To Silence’, ‘Wave Upon Wave’ and ‘An Approach’ which kind of makes it an EP – but no matter, it’s so much better than most of the dross around at the moment.

Probably best buy both, just to be on the safe side and play the first when you’re neck-deep in a Radox bath.    ****

Review by Alan Jones

By the way – the cover art-work on both albums is superb and very redolent of those Talk Talk albums.

Albany Down - Born In The Ashes

ALBANY DOWN Born In The Ashes (indie)

Seven years is surely too long between releases, but whatever the reasons, this excellent album deserves to build some momentum and push Albany Down towards enduring and wide-spread success. ****

TEMPT

TEMPT Tempt (Better Noise Music)

Listening to this album puts the listener in such a good mood and here’s hoping they can gain a foothold in the listening habits of the younger folk (folks my age will easily be won over as they relive their 80s musical past).

Tempt do live up to their claim of rock music for the modern age and these songs are made for blasting out live in arenas around the world. For once the hype is well deserved. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

DBA - Celestial Songs

DBA (Downes Braide Association) Celestial Songs (Cherry Red)

Each and every song is dressed in evocative, sophisticated arrangements. And each has an hypnotic quality. ****1/2

STRAY - About Time

STRAY About Time (Talking Elephant)

The result is an album of melodic hard rock with occasional prog and symphonic influences.

At its best the album pushes Bromham’s meaningful song narratives into a new bombastic musical environment which helps amplify lyrical meaning and gives the band plenty of room to stretch out. ****

Review by Pete Feenstra

STREETLIGHT - Ignition

STREETLIGHT Ignition (Frontiers)

Streetlight’s debut album is filled to the brim with heart and soul AOR.

Few bands have the skill and ability to make it sound this honest. Just unpretentious songs of unerring simplicity and (mostly) uncomplicated sentiment, built on strands of soaring melody and cleanly crafted musicianship. ****1/2

SOUTHERN EMPIRE - Another World

SOUTHERN EMPIRE Another World (Giant Electric Pea)

In summary, a wonderful album – chock full of everything that makes progressive rock so good – great songs, a thoughtful libretto and musicianship from all concerned that’s just off the scale. *****

Album review : VITALINES – Wheels Within Wheels

Frontiers [Release date: 20.10.23]

Vitalines is Tommy Denander and Robbie LaBlanc. Two musicians who need little or no introduction to the Melodic Rock fraternity.

You might immediately be intrigued by the song titles. Several catch your eye: ‘Cards From Another Game’, ‘You Never Know With Magic’, and ‘Judgement Day Is Here’. There’s a sense of finality to this latter title, but perversely, this is the opening track.

It’s easy to fall into exaggeration when describing the music these two talented guys produce. But it’s hard to resist the notion that this might just be their best collection of songs yet.

It takes time to cultivate a musical palate to this level. The duo’s highly developed brand of sophisticated pop and rock on tracks such as ‘Life Waits For No One’ and ‘Nothing But Silence’ could quite easily be the payoff to a career of working hard and paying dues. Never mind talent and ability.

There are echoes of great genre bands all around us as we go through the “born again” AOR of this captivating album.

The richly textured and carefully harmonised ‘Love Not Fantasy’ and ‘Hello World We Need To Talk’ are genuine album highlights. They have the uncluttered, graceful feel of Mr Mister at their best.

Of all the songs here, ‘Love And Thunder’ is emblematic of a genre that peaked in the middle of the eighties, calling to mind Toto and their edgy, proto prog / melodic rock beginnings.

There are faint echoes too of Alias’s unsurpassed AOR mid paced ballad, ‘Waiting For Love’ on ‘When Spirits Fight’, mainly thanks to the mood music and LaBlanc’s yearning vocals.

‘Cards From Another Game’ could have been Survivor in a sublimely creative moment and ‘You Never Know With Magic’ could have fallen off the back of Chicago’s Stone Of Sisyphus album.

At times, maybe the production lacks oomph and depth, but they make up for that in arrangement and melody. And the songs, serpentine and sinuous, are pushed along by the music’s restless, driving rhythms.

Often electrifying, frequently exciting, this is one fine piece of music. ****1/2

Gig review: KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

The measure of a singer can be found in the offers they get to fill the boots of famous predecessors. Best known as the frontman for Burning Rain- whose guitarist Doug Aldrich should recognise a good singer having worked with the holy trinity of Coverdale, Dio and Hughes- Keith St. John was also asked to fill Sammy Hagar’s boots in latter day incarnations of Montrose, and more recently he was handpicked for the reformed Kingdom Come when  Lenny Wolf was not interested in continuing his Robert Plant impressions.

Unfortunately, not being a household name, his UK tour always seemed a bit optimistic especially with so many gigs around and did not wholly go to plan. Indeed this show, originally at the Black Heart, was downgraded to a free show at short notice and moved to ‘The Dev’, one of the venues that make Camden almost the last rock stronghold in London. The advantage of a pub gig was an intimate atmosphere and more scope for comings and goings.

KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

After what seemed like endless sound checking, his acoustic show opened with ‘Rock the Nation’, showcasing that strong and bluesy voice before one of a number of Burning Rain  tunes in ‘My Lust Your Fate’ and, appropriately enough a Zeppelin song in ‘Good Times Bad Times’ which had some younger visitors singing along lustily.

Recounting how he spent a time depping in Lynch Mob, he covered their ‘River of Love’ before a classy ‘Shelter’ from the Burning Rain back catalogue, and getting the crowd to sing along to the Whitesnake classic ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’. He was accompanied by a fellow American in Jack Frost, briefly guitarist in Savatage and various other bands. However, a lack of rehearsals together before undertaking the tour was betrayed by the way the latter appeared at times to be working out the right keys on the fly.

Keith outlined his career in engaging fashion, including how James Kottak had persuaded him to front the reformed Kingdom Come (before with irony departing himself). Now, back in the day I was a defender of KC against the ‘led clones’ insults but as I momentarily  confused the verses of ‘Get It On’ with ‘Kashmir’ as it merged seamlessly into a medley with ‘Black Dog’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’, complete with more singalongs, I began to think Gary Moore and other detractors had a point.

KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

There was a then a very special guest with Jack vacating the second stool for a rather self effacing Myke Gray. The Skin guitarist did however tell an amusing anecdote about how a career criminal left his Dad a box of tapes, and how one with Montrose and Van Halen on each side shifted his musical education from punk into heavy rock.

The level of professionalism increased dramatically as the two duetted on not one, not two but a trio of numbers from that classic Montrose debut in ‘Rock Candy’, ‘Bad Motor Scooter’ and best of all the relative obscurity in ‘Make it Last’. Myke even then tried to teach Keith ‘Tower of Strength’, assisted by vocals from the Skin fans present, before handing back.

KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

After a Burning Rain ballad in ‘Made For Your Heart’, and another Lynch Mob number in ‘Hell Child’, setting a Guinness World record for clichéd lyrics, Keith’s delivery of the KC ballad ‘What Love Can Be’ was a highlight of the set.

However as people began to drift away, understandably on a Monday night, the on stage fare became progressively more ragged. After a cover of ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’, half hearted attempts for the audience to lead ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Crying in the Rain’ rather fell flat before a final Burning Rain song in ‘Face the Music’, the title track from when he and Doug Aldrich last toured the UK.

KEITH ST.JOHN- Devonshire Arms, Camden, 9 October 2023

Full credit is due to Keith St. John for being one of the declining number of American acts determined to make it across the pond whatever the financial cost. The tour took place in challenging circumstances and technically this was far from a perfect gig but his classic blues rock voice and winning personality made for a fun evening. I’d love to see him back, maybe as part of a wider bill with better-known names.

Album review : EDGE OF FOREVER – Ritual

Frontiers [Release date : 13.10.23]

Alessandro Del Vecchio’s band, Edge Of Forever, have released some interesting albums over the last few years.

Native American culture has been a constant theme. It clearly inspired a quartet of tracks on last year’s album, Seminole. And indeed inspired several tracks on the band’s 2019 album, Native Soul… ‘Promised Land’, ‘Three Rivers’, ‘Dying Sun’, three elements of the tribe’s story.

This new album, Ritual, moves us forward. We are still focused on the Seminoles, not so much the tribe, but two individual members, one male, one female. Twins. Separated in their youth by the social mores of the day.

Ritual is the tale of their quest to find each other once again. A Melodic Rock Concept album, if you will.

It doesn’t work as well as it clearly thinks it should.

There are only a handful of songs here, if that, where those adrenalin fuelled verses and chest beating choruses we enjoyed from the last album grab us by the throat and won’t let go.

Openers, ‘Where Are You’ and ‘Water Be My Path’s richly melodic twists and ear-catching hooks pull us onto the edge of our seats, eager to hear more.

But nothing really matches up after that.

‘The Last One’ tries hard but doesn’t quite cut it, and Aldo Lonobile burns an entertainingly scorched path through ‘Freeing My Will’.

But the real problem is that across the album there’s a whole lot of surface but not a lot of depth, despite the subject matter.

Maybe something is lost in translation… the lyrics never truly take the subject matter beyond cliché… ‘Love Is The Only Answer’, ‘Ride The Wings Of Hope’ and ‘Baptised In Fire’ are cases in point.

As a consequence, Ritual never makes up in story what it lacks in Melodic Rock heft. **1/2

Album review: DANDELION CHARM – Scream Inside The Tear

DANDELION CHARM - Scream Inside The Tear

Bandcamp [Release date 20.10.23]

Dandelion Charm, the husband and wife team consisting of Clare Fowler (vocals) and John Fowler (vocals, acoustic drums, guitars, bass, keys & producer), have seemingly been quiet release wise since releasing their excellent ‘Maybe Dreamers’ back in 2o19. On this album Dandelion Charm have really upped the whole kit & caboodle, from the wonderfully clear production through to some stunning guitar solos and vocal arrangements.

Although confronting dark subject matter, ‘Scream Inside the Tear’ contains hope as well as acceptance; the joy of living in the moment and appreciating the life we have.

One of the strengths of the album is that it takes a few spins to really gel and when it does, you can’t stop playing it! Similar to the recent RPWL album (another one to check out if you haven’t already), this is a concept album as the lyrical themes follow a circular structure reflecting the cycles of life, death and rebirth in an ongoing loop.

Picking three highlights, first we have the folky ‘Find A Way’, with its Simon & Garfunkel approved joint harmonies, crystal clear sound, this really is a classic headphones listen. Beautifully produced and performed. Next up, ‘Shouting At The Sea’, again stands out due to its soundscapes and haunting lead vocal from Clare. The music gently rises to a crescendo before fading out on soft guitar strings.

Final one of the three is ‘The Benefit of Experience’, from the heavy intro through to the stellar guitar solos (hints of Gilmour and Rothery), the song also highlights how well Clare and John’s vocals combine.

Dandelion Charm have excelled themselves on this album, keeping their folk roots and adding a lot of prog rock into the mix. If you enjoy Mostly Autumn, classic 70s era Fleetwood Mac or can imagine a female fronted Marillion (that comparison will have the prog diehards spitting their teeth out!), Dandelion Charm have hit your musical bullseye. ****1/2

Gig review: Quarantune Rocks Weekender 2023 -The Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville, October 6 & 7 2023

Quarantune Rocks was created by friends Karen Clayton and Pamela Hinchliffe, during COVID-19 to support rock fans and live music in an online group. The not-for-profit festival is in its third year, run by music lovers and aims to support new music, bands, and local venues with profit going to the Music Venue Trust.

QRocks 2023

Across the weekend, Quarantune Rocks will showcase 10 bands that represent the best of the exciting UK rock scene, co-founder, Karen says “There’s a wealth of new talent in the rock world and we want to unleash some of it by supporting these amazing bands”.

“After the success of previous events, Quarantune Rocks 2023 promises to be bigger, better, and louder than ever” added Pamela.

The event takes place at the Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville, which has been putting on live music for almost 30 years. Co-Founder, Karen thinks it’s the perfect place for Quarantune Rocks, “Live music venues are dying across the UK, but the Victoria Bikers Pub provides a space for new bands and established acts to take to the stage.”

“For this year’s non-profit event, we made it a mission to source some of the best new music out there, with performances from ten bands over 2 days and headline appearances from Trident Waters and Gypsy Pistoleros, we were once again delighted with our line-up, and we were confident the event would rock but like always, it is the people that make the event.”

So firstly, a huge shout out to John, Dave and the super friendly team at The Victoria Biker’s Pub who hosted our event and gave us all the help we needed. Shane was amazing as our sound engineer, Quarantune Rocks rocked! This venue is quirky and legendary, we love it, thank you all so much.

An even bigger thank you to every single one of you who came along to support us, to Steve Russ for the amazing video work and of course, to all our amazing bands, without whom our event wouldn’t happen. We try to be diverse on our bill and showcase all the talent, so our bands offer something for everyone – we hope you loved them as much as we do.

Friday October 6

Opening for us are the rather fabulous, Naked Sunday who certain set the pace for our weekend, with an engaging and lively set, they rocked that stage with heavy bass lines, great rhythm on the drums and Martin on lead vocals and guitar, whose showman performance raises the roof. Initially he reminded me of Myles Kennedy, but his range is much broader – what a set, simply a great way to kick off what is surely going to be a good weekend packed of rock! As Naked Sunday head off to the recording studio, I am not alone in looking forward to hearing more of them.

Here Come The Crows are a 5 piece from Swindon, who have their own unique brand of dirty rock ‘n’ blues, Lee is a captivating frontman, and he spares no time at getting the crowd engaged for an energetic full on set. Classy, sassy, they liven us up nicely, lifting the performance to a new level.

Next up, Black Bear Kiss, this Shropshire 4 piece are just perfection and they certainly gained a new following tonight. With a packed set that included all of their classic tracks, from their self-titled debut album, this is a band with a huge heart and a tragic back story, ‘Begin Again’ is a tribute to former guitarist Rob Jones who sadly passed away suddenly in 2021 “This is really meaningful”, says singer Chris Leech, “many years of blood, sweat and tears have gone into making this … it was the last track we recorded with our late guitarist Rob Jones, so its very special to us.” They held their own and then some on that stage with the crowd eating out of their hands – this band are most definitely going places and we were so lucky to get them for our event.

Our Friday headliner was Trident Waters, a London based trio formed in 2015, this band play a funky bluesy rock, and when they take the stage, there’s a moment when the crowd look shell-shocked, and I see people getting closer to feel that beat, with the Devils Stomp and Who’s in Love? showcasing their range and hook laden style. The groove is on and we are enthralled in the moment. What a band, we have a great time and certainly good times are rollin’. This band are off the scale – we are all having a little band crush by the time they end their awesome set – what a master class in rock n blues!

Closing out day 1, what a line up, what performances, the QR family is having a ball, and we still have day 2 to look forward to….

Saturday October 8

Daylight Robbery kick off proceedings on Saturday, this was a set that cleared any cobwebs and set the scene for a great day/night of rock! Daylight Robbery are a 3-piece delivering highly accomplished musicianship and great tracks – the bass player provides vocal support, the drummer is immense and again, the lead vocalist is a showman who knows how to entertain. What a set, what a walk down memory lane with the rather awesome ‘Edwards no 8’ and ‘Samarah’ – a great opener for the day!

Bare Knuckle, a 5-piece hailing from Oxfordshire, share their heavier side opening with Dive Bomber, the pacey set shows their potential and the obvious camaraderie on stage. These guys are rock family with them supporting us from the very first event and leading a poignant tribute to much-loved members of the QR family who are very sadly no longer with us, Carlos stepped up to deliver AC/DC’s ‘Shoot to Thrill’ in all its glory – thank you so much for that. We know Steve Downes & Tina Sherwood (Forge Music) would have been rocking with us!

It’s no secret that I adore Skinny Knowledge – they’re the band I have seen from their infancy and indeed they had their inaugural gig at the first ever Quarantune Rocks, so I’m beyond excited that we have them on our bill again.

Excitement was met by pure rock star quality; how tight this band are and how far they have come in the last couple of years. With a packed set, the energy increases ten-fold and the whole of the Vic is bouncing along to this class act. I am sure this band will be going places and I suspect we won’t see them playing smaller venues for much longer particularly when the next album is released imminently.

BlitZ deliver a blistering 10 song classic rock set including their latest single ‘Freddie Said’ – they sound so familiar, yet it is all original, good old rock n roll and with impassioned pleas to carry on supporting live music, this band live and breathe rock ‘n’ roll. Skilled musicianship, lyrics that are reminiscent of their influences this is a quest for rock perfection, with many new fans won over and excited for their album release.

Topping the bill on Saturday night are The Gypsy Pistoleros. Described as “the world’s greatest flamenco punk glam rock band ever”, the band has recently received prime-time airplay with the single ‘Come on Eileen’. Lead singer Lee Mark Jones is excited to head up the Saturday night, “Gypsy Pistoleros cannot wait to play Quarantune Rocks, cracking people, cracking line up! Essentially, it’s gonna be a right cracker!”

Gypsy Pistoleros take to the stage with their unique style, bang on humour and crowd engagement, their stage presence draws people in and the party goes up a level, what a performance, what a set! This 4-piece, hailing from Worcester, with Lee at the helm, gel really well together and the impact on stage is instantaneous and electric.

There’s no hiding place, audience participation is required and eagerly delivered. They are unique, completely unique, never have I heard such a blend of styles merge so successfully that you’d struggle to label it (don’t bother trying) but the set is blistering, the tempo is high and the energy off the scale – think living la Vida loco on acid and you’re getting close!   We couldn’t have picked a better way to end our event, I’m definitely excited to hear their new album, ‘Duende A Go Go.. Loco’ when it’s released early November.

The Quarantune Rocks group is a close-knit family, we are always bowled over by the generosity of our group, times are tough out there and we all know that for many live music is a luxury item given the cost of living.

This year was no different, people gave their time, merchandise was donated to our charity raffle, let alone the many miles that were covered as bands and supporters travelled from all over the country, to showcase their support for the live music scene. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, it meant the world to us to see you all there, not only did we have an absolute blast, we raised £482.82 for the Music Venue Trust. THANK YOU!

The music industry and in particular small music venues really need our support and without grassroots venues, bands have nowhere to start their journeys, so here’s our Quarantune Rocks plea, if you are passionate about music, as are we, then please, please support it however you can, follow a band, buy the CD or merchandise, go to a small gig venue, check out bands you have never heard of  – you’ll make more of a difference than you’d realise to the live music scene and you may bump into a few of us too.

Here’s to next time…
