Gig Review: SAINT VITUS/MOS GENERATOR – The Cathouse, Glasgow, 14 March 2013

…soundcheck into an intro of sorts which built up a buzz within the crowd. By the time frontman / guitarist Tony Reed launched into the first number they already had the crowd on their side and success was ensured. I don’t know if it was planned or not but it worked! Playing a couple of older numbers and tracks from their latest album ‘Nomads’, released on the excellent Ripple Records, the band went down a storm. Heavy stoner rock with a groove th… Continue reading

News: New film ‘VINYL’ hits cinemas on 15th March 2013

…Sara Sugarman (Confessions of A Teenage Drama Queen), and produced by John H. Williams (Shrek) and Preston Clay Reed, ‘Vinyl’ echoes  The Alarm’s story, when they correctly assumed the media would ignore the single if they knew who was behind it. Setting out to prove that ageism was alive and well with the British music industry, The Poppy Fields’ ‘debut single release’ subsequently gained significant airplay and charted in the UK Top 30. With th… Continue reading

Album review: KOMPENDIUM – Beneath The Waves

…Waves’ is surely destined to acquire the mantle. Kompendium is the brainchild of progressive rock luminary Rob Reed (Magenta, Chimpan-A) who has called in all his favours at once to assemble a collection of musicians that reads like a Who’s Who of progressive rock. The likes of Steve Hackett, Francis Dunnery, John Mitchell, Nick Barrett and Gavin Harrison all add their redoubtable skills and Reed has pushed the envelope still further to acquire… Continue reading

CHRIS SINGLETON & THE DISTRACTIONS gig review

…e may have to change this slightly when he plays the bigger stages! ‘Twisted City’, ‘Worry Number One’ and ‘Lou Reed’ are other set highlights and for a band that hasn’t played live in two years they are extremely tight and fluid. Pop rock bliss and a good time is guaranteed at a Chris Singleton gig and even better is the prospect of a new album. Jason Ritchie Featured Artist: JOSH TAERK Since early 2020 Josh has been entertaining us with exclusi… Continue reading

DOWN, WARBEAST gig review

…lled into one. Totally a classic sound, but their presentation sonically was fabulous. Singer/guitarist Matthew Reed was the centerpiece of the band though they were such a cohesive unit. His voice is so full of soul and passion. It literally made my nipples tingle and sent chills down my spine, something that hasn’t happened for my in regards to music since Ray Gillen of Badlands when I first heard their debut s/t album. Top that with his equall… Continue reading

If You Like Metallica… by Mike McPadden

…ch on a pun can wear thin at times. Interesting box out where the author gives ten reasons why working with Lou Reed (including ostrich guitar tuning!) on the frankly dire album ‘Lulu’ was a good idea. Even after reading this I am not convinced! Of course these selections are based on the author linking them to what Metallica have said has influenced them plus a few modern bands who take Metallica as a starting point in their sound. A… Continue reading

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY – Corrosion Of Conformity

Metal Church - The Present Wasteland

…ntelligence to realise that the band’s original trio of Woody Weatherman (guitar/vocals), Mike Dean (bass), and Reed Mullin (drums) would look towards the early 80s for inspiration when creating the eleven new compositions that are on offer here. What they also did, however, and which I am personally quite appreciative of, is that they did not forsake the mid-90s period of their career in the process – a time when slow groovy riffs were as integr… Continue reading

The Lady: A Homage to Sandy Denny

The song was voted “Favourite Folk Track of All Time” by listeners of BBC Radio 2 and is also played at the close of Jez Butterworth’s Award Winning play Jerusalem. The comprehensive re-issue of all Denny’s recordings in recent years, has seen her reputation continue to grow, at a time when more and more of today’s rising stars are acknowledging… Continue reading

STONE AXE – Stone Axe II

…of ‘seventies rock preservation’ and in the studio the band consist of Dru Brinkerhoff on vocal duties and Tony Reed, formally of Mos Generator, covering all instruments, so do they manage to keep the 70’s flame alive ? They most certainly do. This release contains two discs, one newly recorded and the other bringing together odds and sods previously released. The first disc is for me the better of the two with each track paying homage to an icon… Continue reading

DC4 – “ELECTRIC MINISTRY”

Metal Church - The Present Wasteland

…s Dio record his fifth studio album “Lock Up The Wolves”. Now if you add to that partial contributions by Dizzy Reed (keys: ex Guns N Roses), Gonzo (drums: Armored Saint) and production duties by no other than Mr. Bill Metoyer (Fates Warning, W.A.S.P., Slayer), then you expect something truly magnificent, right? When I begun listening to “Electric Ministry”, the band’s third studio album, I did so without any expectations whatsoever. Actually, I… Continue reading
