SILVERDOLLAR – Morte

$ilverdollar formed in Sweden back in 1996 as a covers/ tribute band to all things metal, releasing a CD of covers in 2002. In 2006 the band took the plunge for their 10th anniversary and wrote their debut album entitled ‘ Evil Never Sleeps’ and this new album ‘Morte’ is their first release on Massacre Records with whom the band have recently signed a worldwide deal, and on this hearing not a minute too soon.

As I said the band have been treading the boards for years playing metal covers and I can only assume that their live shows are a must see, after 16 odd years these guys really know how to play. Opener ‘ Damage Done’ is a good representation of the band’s sound, imagine Steve Harris getting together with Yngwie Malmsteen for a writing session and the two of them being watched over by the spirit of Ronnie James Dio, this is well crafted metal of the first degree.

The guitar work of Ola Berg is fantastic throughout, I was actually surprised to find there is only one guitarist in the band. The vocals of Esa Englund are like a slightly gruff Bruce Dickinson and the rhythm section of Mats Hjarp and Fredrik Kall pummel the living daylights out of their poor instruments at a furious pace, this is Swedish metal at it’s best.

All the tracks on the album are first class, but special mention must go to two tracks ‘ Raging Eyes’ and the amazing ‘HF’ both of which are prime slabs of fast paced metal, if you only listen to one track from this album, make sure its ‘HF’ !

$ilverdollar’s influences are clear over the 12 tracks on offer here, but to be honest if Maiden were writing shorter, punchier metal tracks as these on show here then I would be a very happy man, in the meantime though ’Morte’ will do just nicely.
