JEFF SCOTT SOTO – Damage Control (Frontiers 2012)

Jeff Scott Soto is back with a straight ahead melodic hard rock album after his last solo album, ‘Beautiful Mess’ with its more funky/soul vibe, alienated much of his fan base (a damn shame in my book as it is one fine album). Joining him on this album are a number of musical guests including Jamie Borger (Talisman), Casey Grillo (KAMELOT), Joel Hoekstra (NIGHT RANGER) and legendary Y&T’s Dave Meniketti.
‘Die A Little’ is one of those instant melodic rock songs JSS does so well, complete with the big harmony vocals on the choruses and little touches of keyboards – glorious stuff. The sort of song you could see W.E.T. doing. ‘Tears That I Cry’ has a great riff and again some blissful vocal harmonies. ‘KrazyWorld’ is a funky little number with a sterling guitar solo, whilst the title track features one of the heaviest riffs on the album.
‘NeverEnding War’ takes a political theme lyrically and builds from a subdues intro into another monster rocker.
‘Bonafide’ is the only ballad on the album and hints back at his ‘Prism’ album, giving him a chance to show his mellower vocal style.
There is a fourteen song deluxe edition which the man himself suggests you buy to appreciate the album fully – my review is based on the standard eleven song edition. Either way this album is another fine melodic rock release from one of the most consistent performers in the genre and a ‘must have’.
