Frontiers
Sonic Station is the brainchild of Swedish guitarist/composer Alexander Kronbrink who describes his project as West Coast AOR, and while this may not be the greatest album I have heard so far this year, it is far from the worst.
Featuring four guest vocalists, the style of the album switches in sound between 80’s pop rock, jazz rock and ballads. The opening instrumental track has an almost soundtrack like quality to it, whilst stand out track “Never Let The Sunshine Die” features the best guitar work on the album and a solid vocal performance from Kristoffer Fogelmark. “Hold On To Me” and “My Last Refrain” are jazz infused – in particular the vocal on the latter, and track “You Have To Let Me Go” features a sprinkling of ‘80’s pop keyboards and some fine Stevie Nicks style vocals from Tove Lo.
There is also a light and easy duet from Marika Willstedt and Kristoffer Fogelmark in “Love You More” and Marika also features on the album’s ‘80’s pop style ballad “Reasons” and the other stand out track “Running Through The Night”.
Produced by Kronbrink, “Sonic Station” features some accomplished musicianship and some good songs- however, in 2012 he may find he needs a bit more than this to compete in the current musical landscape.
