Cooking Vinyl 2012
Multi platinum alternative rock and Counting Crows have released their first independent label studio album and it is a 15 track set of covers, many highlighting the band’s influences (surprisingly no REM here).
Kicking off is Romany Rye’s “Untitled (Love Song)”, which is a little angular, the piano taking some of the jangle off of the guitar. Teenage Fanclub’s “Start Again” is more acoustic, and it has a more alternative Americana here. Coby Brown’s “Hospital” kicks off in more singer / songwriter fashion before moving to the more mainstream alternative rock/pop that Crows fans will recognise.
Songs by Fairport Convention and Travis get a run through, (the former actually a rather enjoyable tune with some decent guitar work). The Face’s “Ooh La La” is a good listen, one you could sing along too. The rich organ gives an easy listening feel to blues/country. The Gram Parsons track is more uptempo, slightly country, but enjoyable.
The band’s alternative take blends angular rock with mainstream MOR, but few of the tracks really sound distinctive.
An easy listen, one for mainstream alternative fans, but I wasn’t overly gripped.
