Atomhenge
Hard to believe but we are only a handful of years shy of Hawkwind’s half century and battle-scarred though she may be, his mother ship has been fine-tuned over the years by chief helmsman Brock. “Memos and Demos” evidences the process with solo performances of work-in-progress, notably for the band’s 1997 release ‘Distant Horizons’. It gets beaten-up by critics for this reason and Brock himself suggests its legitimacy hinges on providing the die-hard fan with insight into ‘creative process’. They all need to get out more: for what of newcomers? Brock’s dipping in and out of what are often sprawling compositions affords greater accessibility for the hesitant and all the genre trademarks are in place, from hissing and thrumming space rock to a tribal 80’s reggae-root bopping and on to a contemplative World-influenced patina, all held together with his stylised monotone vocal. Whether shrugging off middle-age mid-life crises or just dashing to dump Bieber, newbies of all ages could do a lot worse than start here to discover the evergreen allure of Ladbroke Grove.
