LOTUS PEDAL – Pedal To The Metal

 Two Sides Moon/SLW 2012

According to the band’s blurb, the band’s name in sanskrit Sutra means ‘ the universal door of the enlightened ones who listen to the sounds of all the world’ try fitting that on the front of a t-shirt ! Rather than listening to all the world though, these guys have been living on a diet of space and stoner rock by the sound of things, Kyuss, early Sabbath, Queens Of The Stone Age, the influence is clear to hear.

The album opens with a bit of a plodding instrumental entitled ‘Evil Plague’ which takes a basic riff and does it to death. At one point you do get a spaced out guitar solo over the top, but as openers go , its not the best of starts. The repeated riff is a bit of a theme throughout and can quickly become tedious, you will the song to go somewhere but unfortunately it rarely does. The song ‘Dark Trance’ is a good example of this, the first three quarters of the song sounds like the disc has stuck, then for the last bit the vocals kick in and it is actually not too bad, had they just cut the extended intro it would have been a decent song. Best of the bunch is ‘ Rock Generation’ which is a punchy, straight forward rock ‘n’ roll number, now, an album more in that vein might be more interesting.

Pedal To The Metal is not that bad an album, but with a bit of selective editing, it could have been so much better.
