LYRIEL ‘Leverage’

Folk metal band Lyriel returns with their new album a follow-up to the highly enjoyable ‘Paranoid Circus’ and it also marks the band’s debut on AFM Records. Overall the band has added a commercial sheen to their sound, sure to appeal to fans of bands like Within Temptation and Epica. But fear not as the cello and violin still hold their own as the most folk rock song on the album ‘Aus Der Tiefe’ proves. Thomas Linder (Schandmaul) duets on ‘Wenn Die Engel Fallen’, a beautiful ballad and all the more haunting for being sung in German.

Vocalist JessicaThierjung can handle the quieter songs and the more metal moments like ‘White Lilly’ with aplomb and is ably helped out by cellist Linda Laukamp who adds some additional vocals. Sadly though the album only lasts just over half an hour but then bar a throwaway intro there are no fillers.

Having taken a more commercial route and toned down the folk influences (although hopefully these won’t disappear all together in future releases) let’s hope the band get the success they deserve.
