ACCEPT – Stalingrad

If you’re a metal fan there’s likely no doubt that you know the name Accept. Most people know them for the song “Balls To the Wall” and the fact that the band was typically decked out in camouflage. True fans will know that there is far more to this legendary German band. There have been three different singers and a few line-up changes otherwise over the years, but at the heart of the music was always terribly underrated guitarist Wolf Hoffman and bassist Peter Baltes.

Some people gave up on the band years ago when Udo Dirkschneider left to pursue a solo career. He was briefly replaced by David Reece who actually was an excellent replacement. However problems arose and Udo returned for a few albums and then parted ways again. In 2009, Hoffman and Baltes decided to get the band going again, this time with Mark Tornillo, former TT Quick singer. With this line-up the band has released two albums, one of which is the brand new album Stalingrad. As with the previous one, Blood Of The Nations, the band has had a rebirth and are better and stronger than ever. Though there are times Tornillo emulates Udo, for the most part he’s just himself, which kicks major ass.

Musically the band is heavier and tighter than ever. With songs like “Hung, Drawn, and Quartered,” “Shadow Soldiers,” and “Against the World” they prove they can be just as current as any newer bands playing this brand of metal, while maintaining the true sound of Accept. Any of these tracks would fit easily into a setlist of any classic Accept song in a live setting. Though some will lament their desire to have Udo back, I see it as a win win situation: instead of one legendary German metal band, there are now two, both putting out incredible and fresh material. So just kick back and let Stalingrad kick in your head!
